TNA Impact: Is Eric Bischoff up to his old tricks?
Eric Bischoff has had a lot less camera time since he turned babyface, but after watching Thursday night’s TNA Impact, I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing a lot more of the old “Easy E” in the near future.
On this episode, Bischoff and Hulk Hogan convinced TNA president Dixie Carter to suspend Sting for 30 days without pay. When Carter confronted Sting and informed him of the suspension, he told her that she was being conned. She asked him to stop speaking cryptically, and he said that he would explain it “in childlike terms” for her. Before Sting could say another word, however, Bischoff appeared out of nowhere and had security remove him from the building. The no-so-subtle implication was that Bischoff has something to hide.
My hunch is that Bischoff not only is conning Carter, as Sting contests, but that he is part of the mysterious “they” that Abyss keeps speaking about.
During the opening segment of the show, Bischoff came out to stop Hogan from going at it with Abyss. Bischoff slapped Abyss and called him an “ungrateful [expletive].” Instead of attacking Bischoff, however, Abyss went after the security guys in the ring. Hogan then hit Abyss with a chair and Jeff Hardy also got involved, so Abyss never did get his hands on Bischoff.
I'm guessing that Bischoff is turning heel but that Sting is actually wrong about Hogan, who will remain a babyface and join forces with Sting against Bischoff, Abyss and the rest of “they.”
Then again, I could be completely wrong about all of it.
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
One of the highlights of the show was a promo by “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero, who returned to TV after being out for a couple months with a shoulder injury. Dinero received a great reaction from the crowd and he seemed to legitimately get choked up. I’m glad that he mentioned that he had not forgotten that it was Mr. Anderson who injured him, even though Anderson has seemingly turned babyface. …
The Hardy-Abyss main event (with TNA world champion Rob Van Dam as guest referee) was OK. Hardy won clean but Abyss got his heat back after the match by laying out Hardy, RVD and Anderson – his three opponents in the fourway main event at the Victory Road pay-per-view on July 11. During the post-match, Anderson “accidentally” hit Hardy with a chair, so the doubts about Anderson’s sincerity as a babyface remain. …
Despite the heinous things that Sting has done as of late, the crowd at the Impact Zone booed when Carter suspended him and when Bischoff had security take him away. …
Taz questioned whether the ECW faction – which now consists of Tommy Dreamer, Stevie Richards, Raven and Rhino – could be Abyss’ “they.” The fact that Taz raised the question probably means the answer is no, which I hope is the case. …
I liked the opening of the show with Abyss on the loose, throwing chairs and scaring the heck out of SoCal Val and some kids at ringside. …
If Hogan and Bischoff really want Abyss gone from TNA so bad, why don’t they just fire him? I suppose it’s the same reason that Chelsea doesn’t just leave Desmond Wolfe. …
Speaking of Wolfe, it pained me to see him tap out to Brian Kendrick. No disrespect to Kendrick, but Wolfe should be in the TNA world title picture, not jobbing to the No. 1 contender for the TNA X Division title. …
The Samoa Joe-A.J. Styles match was good while it lasted. Styles tapping out was a little surprising, but it does play into Styles’ story line with Ric Flair and Kazarian. …
The Jay Lethal-Matt Morgan match was entertaining. The finish – Hernandez’s interference allowed Lethal to get the win – was predictable but logical. Before the match, Morgan said that Flair offered to make him the first member of Fortune. Back in February I wrote a post on the speculation that TNA was starting a Four Horsemen-type faction led by Flair, and I said that the ideal group would be Styles (who was a given at the time), Morgan, Wolfe and Robert Roode. …
Sarita turned heel and attacked her former tag team partner Taylor Wilde after Wilde lost to Madison Rayne. That seemed to come out of nowhere, but apparently there has been dissension between Sarita and Wilde on the TNA Xplosion syndicated show. …
I enjoyed The Motor City Machine Guns-Ink Inc. match, which was won by TMCMG. It would be fun to see what these two teams could do if they were given more than five minutes. …
So a TNA camera guy followed Dreamer all the way to Yonkers, N.Y., just to get blown off when he asked about Dreamer’s presence at the Impact Zone? Wouldn’t it have been easier to confront Dreamer while he was at the Impact Zone?

Interesting thing about your review of the show, Kevin, was there was not much criticism. I felt the same way. There were just a few minor things with which to take issue. Makes me wonder if Vince Russo is still writing the script. If so, I'll give him credit. This was a pretty decent show.
Glad you pointed out the crowd reaction to Sting. I really believe the crowd has never really taken to Bischoff/Hogan as faces and still prefer to cheer for Sting. Your idea for a Bischoff turn makes sense...which worries me, because TNA has a track record of swerving just when things begin to fall into place.
My biggest complaint about the show was the Sarita-Wilde angle, which has very little heat, ate up too much time which would have been better utilized by longer matches for Motor City Machine Guns v Ink, Inc and/or Somoa Joe v Styles.
By the way, I thought the way they put over Kendrick was fine, since Wolfe was obviously distracted by Chelsea...even if their relationship makes absolutely no sense.
I like Kendrick, but would prefer to see him as part of a tag team, maybe with Brian Danielson...just a thought. What is Lash LeRoux doing these days? Always thought he and Kendrick might potentially have good chemistry as a team.

Yes it wasn't a flawless episode, but wow I thought the last 3 weeks have been quite an improvement. Unlike RAW, there was lots of actual wrestling on the show. I'm not a TNA maniac, but I thought ever since the Lethal Flair wooo showdown TNA has been solid. Wonder what Kevin Nash wanted from Hulk and Eric...

Did it really surprise anyone that Bischoff showed up once Sting was ready to seemingly "spill the beans?" This is classic Russo style booking.

I'm glad to see D'Angelo Dinero back. Hopefully he will be used better than Desmond Wolfe is now.
Speaking of Wolfe, I'm really getting annoyed with the whole Chelsea angle. I can see Wolfe getting mad at her for not following directions or maybe messing up a distraction, but she just stands there, doing nothing. Why take your eyes off your opponent so many times to yell at her for seemingly no reason? It's annoying and it makes the match outcome obvious.
I remember a time where Taylor Wilde conquered Awesome Kong for the title and Madison Rayne never won a match...
I think Jay Lethal is entertaining and solid in the ring, however, I don't think he should be in the TNA top 10 for two reasons.
1) As good as he is, he is far from being the TNA champion any time soon and we all know it.
2) He can bring interest back into the X division.

It was a solid enough showing this week. I actually find myself confused about where TNA is going with all this. Hogan vs Abyss, obviously Hogan looks like a total face from this angle but then both Hogan and Bischoff came off kind of heel like to me pressuring Dixie to suspend Sting, the whole thing came off as Sting being a rebel with a cause. But you mention something I didn't catch, about how Bischoff might be turning heel without Hogan and that makes alot of sense. But who knows, there just seems to be a weird undertone with TNA right now. I don't really agree with the wiseguy remarks about why don't they just fire Abyss and why is Chelsea still with wolfe. Maybe because it's wrestling. They could fire Abyss but then there wouldn't be a big monster creating havok and they wouldn't have a show. I mean If we take this attitude, why even watch wrestling?

Hey Kevin, I gave you a hard time last week when I asked you if you'd prefer Katie Vick style storylines. Therefore I have to apologize about that boss. But I appreciate your passion as a wrestling fan, and even though I'm a Hulkamaniac from days bygone, I cringe at the notion of an eventual Abyss vs Hulk Hogan match unless Hogan gets put down like he did against Brock Lesnar years back. My question for you then is, do you think Hogan will indeed do the J-O-B to Abyss?
Anyway, keep up the good writing and I look forward to your next postings!

Oh, God, just what we need: a heel Bischoff soaking up airtime with endless smirking promos. I think I'd rather see the return of ECW.
Did Kevin Nash get an appearance fee for his breif walk-in on the Hogan/Bischoff/Carter meeting? If so, it was a complete waste of money and a slap in the face to the actual athletes in the company. If not, then what the hell was the point of it?

I think AJ Styles will become a baby face and join up with Hogan& Sting agints Raven, Stevie Richards, and Ryno I think Tazz is apart of they to.

My hunch is that Bischoff not only is conning Carter...
I probably won't be the first to submit a comment like this, but if so that'll be a case of fiction imitating real life.
...but that he is part of the mysterious “they” that Abyss keeps speaking about.
It's possible. As you mentioned in your last TNA post, Joe also referred to "they" shortly before his return. Joe was kidnapped after Bischoff had become frustrated with him getting beaten not only by AJ, but Orlando Jordan the next night. And Bischoff and Hogan seemed to know exactly when Joe would be back; they certainly didn't seem surprised when he finally returned and he was booked in that tag match, and neither one of them asked him who had taken him or what had been done to him.
Of course, if they had revealed who the "they" Joe had been talking about was earlier, and if it actually turns out to be part of an interesting angle (I'm probably giving Russo too much credit, I know), then maybe people would have kept watching and they wouldn't have had to move back to Thursday nights. As it stands now, TNA has fallen so far that WWE doesn't even bother keeping track of them any more; they are no longer perceived as any sort of threat whatsoever.
Here's what might happen. Somebody will decide that Abyss needs to be taken out, and they will say to themselves "Hey, you know who's been looking really unbeatable lately? Samoa Joe! I bet he could deal with Abyss. I'll put them in a match." Only it will turn out that both Abyss and Joe are working for the same guys, and after they work together to beat up some poor schmuck who believes that Joe will side with him against Abyss, there will then be TWO seemingly unstoppable and fearless monsters for the babyfaces of TNA to deal with. An "Oh crap" situation if ever there was one. Despite it being another swerve courtesy of Russo, it's something I'd like to see.
Taz questioned whether the ECW faction – which now consists of Tommy Dreamer, Stevie Richards, Raven and Rhino – could be Abyss’ “they.” The fact that Taz raised the question probably means the answer is no, which I hope is the case. …
I agree with you that having all of the ECW guys get together for some kind of reunion, perhaps forming a stable that will try to take over TNA, will not be anything new or interesting. Raven and Stevie got the jobber entrance and treatment on the January 4th Impact and haven't done much of anything since. Rhino's been on television two times before this past Thursday, and they were both "blink and you missed him" moments. Tommy Dreamer doesn't yet seem like a credible threat either, both because of his long absence from tv and because although he wasn't quite jobbed out on WWECW, he still didn't win very much. Adding Team 3D to the mix wouldn't really do a whole lot. Adding RVD to the mix would help, since then the stable would possess the TNA World Title (if Van Dam retains it, of course), but probably still wouldn't be enough. As I see it, there are only two people who could get involved here as the leader of this stable that would make things interesting:
1. Paul Heyman. Obviously, if Heyman were to arrive in TNA, everybody would take notice. Not only because of Heyman's charisma, but because his very presence might mean that TNA would actually have somebody to book for them who knew his ass from his elbow. But getting Heyman to work for TNA if he weren't given total control would be a hard sell (and knowing Hogan and Bischoff, I doubt they'd be willing to relinquish the control they've got to Heyman), so the next best thing would be...
2. Mick Foley. Foley, of course, had a memorable run in ECW in between his stints with WCW and the WWF, so he would fit in. He's been gone for a while, he's got a reason to hold a grudge against TNA and Bischoff, and while I don't believe he's ever been the leader of a stable I think he would be good in that role.
No disrespect to Kendrick, but Wolfe should be in the TNA world title picture, not jobbing to the No. 1 contender for the TNA X Division title. …
You will get no argument from me. It's really sad how Nigel has been booked. However, the way I see it, if guys like Kendrick and Lethal can go from doing job after job under the Hogan/Bischoff regime to getting pushed to the moon, then there is hope for Wolfe.
So a TNA camera guy followed Dreamer all the way to Yonkers, N.Y., just to get blown off when he asked about Dreamer’s presence at the Impact Zone? Wouldn’t it have been easier to confront Dreamer while he was at the Impact Zone?
Yep, that's TNA for ya.

who is next to join they Mike Awesome what kind of name for a stable is they.
Posted by: ryan | July 3, 2010 6:55 PM
To me the most shocking part of the episode was that Taylor Wilde still works for the company, and that TNA thinks people might give a crap about a feud with her and Sarita. Don't get me wrong, those two are both well versed in the ring, but they have the combined charisma of a broomstick. Throw a match in there with only those two and people might walk out thinking it's intermission.

Don't think Mike Awesome is gonna join any stable anytime soon.

Here's who I think should come to TNA to join the ECW group:
Paul Heyman, Sinister Minister James MItchell, Brother Runt, Sabu, an d Sandman. Do you know if TNA has tried to contact those 2, they would be a good fit. Also, is there any chance Simon Diamond would be getting back in the ring? He wouldn't have to wrestle, but he's a former ECW superstar and I think he still is a TNA road agent.
Kev, what do you think about the rumors about Kevin Sullivan wanting to write for TNA?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm all for change as far as the writing goes.

If Bischoff is part of "they", then the angle doesn't work. Heyman has said repeatedly he's done with the wrestling business, and it's done fairly well without him the last 3 1/2 years.
No matter what, TNA will let us down, if only because their writers are worse than WWE's.

Decent show but two things really bothered me....
1. Desmond Wolfe jobbing to B Kendrick. What a joke. Has TNA forgotten about how Wolfe dominated Kurt Angle? This guy has the goods to deliver, take advantage!
2. AJ losing to Joe by tapout. All that superstar momentum AJ had is just about gone. Right after he lost the title to RVD AJ started delivering some intense promos along with some sharp in-ring work. Now his character is returning to the days of being Christian's sidekick.
