Some extreme face-licking on TNA Impact

Raven gave Tommy Dreamer a tongue lashing Thursday night on TNA Impact – literally.

After saving Dreamer from an attack by Abyss, Raven suddenly turned on his fellow ECW alum. While Dreamer was down, Raven talked some trash and then began licking Dreamer’s face.

I have no idea why Raven was slobbering on Dreamer’s mug, but believe it or not, it wasn’t even the most disgusting thing on the show. No, that would be Orlando Jordan spitting out his chewing gum and shoving it in SoCal Val’s mouth.

But I digress.

Raven’s disturbing public display of disaffection aside, the fact that he and Dreamer are adversaries again instead of allies means that all is right in the world of extreme. If you’re going to have an ECW nostalgia pay-per-view, you have to have these two longtime rivals facing each other.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

I know TNA has to promote the Aug. 8 Hardcore Justice pay-per-view, but an Impact main event involving Dreamer just doesn’t do much for me. The match between Dreamer and Abyss (which Abyss won) wasn’t great, but to be fair, Dreamer was working with a torn medial collateral ligament. …

Eric Bischoff announced that the Aug. 12 episode of Impact – the first show after Hardcore Justice – will feature “pay-per-view quality matches.” That sounds good and all, but doesn’t Impact routinely have marquee match-ups and gimmick matches? …

Speaking of which, The Motor City Machine Guns and Beer Money stole the show again. The third meeting in their best-of-five series was a steel cage match, which the Guns won. The result was predictable since Beer Money was up 2-0, and the match was a bit rushed (it went about eight minutes), but it still was very good. It was nice not to see a ref bump this time and have only one Hebner officiating. …

Since the ECW name and intellectual property is owned by WWE, the crew of former ECW stars is now being referred to as EV2.0 (as in Extreme Version 2). EV2.0 doesn’t sound very extreme to me. …

Hulk Hogan standing in the ring with the likes of Dreamer, Raven and Stevie Richards and endorsing ECW was weird to say the least. …

When Dreamer was trying to convince Brother Ray to participate in Hardcore Justice, he compared the ECW reunion to the original members of Kiss getting back together and putting the makeup on. As a longtime member of the Kiss Army, I take offense at EV2.0 being mentioned in the same breath with the reunion of the greatest rock group of all-time. …

Before Brother Ray agreed to do Hardcore Justice, he asked Devon if they would get to light someone on fire, and Devon said that they would. My guess is that Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney’s night is going up in flames. …

I thought the angle with Matt Morgan, Mr. Anderson, Jeff Hardy and the two security members named Murphy and Gunner was booked completely backwards. First we have Anderson hitting Morgan low and showboating (heel moves). Then Morgan makes a super-fast recovery from the low blow and takes advantage of Anderson’s showboating to seize the advantage (babyface moves). From there, Hardy enters the ring and we have two babyfaces beating up one heel. And lastly, two security guards intervene and proceed to manhandle two of the company’s top babyfaces. By the way, the segment began with Morgan imitating Anderson’s shtick. Not to put myself over, but I think my Anderson impression was better than Morgan’s. …

Ric Flair announced that Beer Money got the final two spots in Fortune. Kazarian then got on the mic and said that Fortune was “not a silly gang of angry rookies,” an obvious shot at The Nexus. I wish the people in TNA would realize that the company just looks minor league when they say stuff like that. What made it worse was that Kazarian went on to lose to Rob Terry in a 30-second squash and Beer Money also got beat. Meanwhile, the “silly gang of angry rookies” is coming off a dominant performance on Raw and is main-eventing SummerSlam. …

Why TNA would book Kazarian to look so weak when it’s trying to get Fortune over is beyond me. I don’t recall The Four Horsemen’s Arn Anderson ever doing 30-second jobs to Lex Luger or Nikita Koloff back in the day. …

I was glad to hear Jay Lethal’s name mentioned this week, but, unfortunately, it was when Flair said that he was wrestling Lethal in a street fight on next week’s show. TNA has really dropped the ball on Lethal’s push. After his big win over Flair at the Victory Road pay-per-view on July 11, Lethal lost clean to Hardy on the very next Impact and then was not even on Impact for two straight weeks. Now he is wrestling Flair again. I thought that issue was already settled. I get it that Flair’s never going to retire, but he should only be wrestling a few times a year on big shows so that his appearances actually mean something. …

A.J. Styles said that the Global title, which was formerly the Legends title, will now be known as the TNA TV title. Good lord, just pick a name for the championship and stick with it. …

The Angelina Love-Sarita match (which Love won) wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. …

Poor Eric Young. After proving that he has the ability to portray a serious character both as a babyface and a heel, he is back to playing a simpleton. As Jim Ross would say, “Please, stop the pain.” …

With Young bringing a mannequin to the ring on this show and Al Snow being involved in the ECW reunion, perhaps Young and Snow are “headed” for a showdown.

"Then Morgan makes a super-fast recovery from the low blow and takes advantage of Morgan’s showboating to seize the advantage (babyface moves)"

Shouldn't that be Anderson's showboating? otherwise it makes no sense, otherwise another top quality blog... aside from the whole Kiss thing, not a fan. EV2.0's little PPV should be a crazy, crazy night though... Sorry couldn't help myself.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks for the catch on Morgan/Anderson. It's fixed.

I am so disinterested in this ECW reunion show. If you've been watching TNA for the last few years then you've seen most of the ECW guys in action. I won't be buying the PPV.

Also, I thought this weeks Impact was really bad. Going into Victory Road, I thought TNA had it really going. I was excited to see the direction of Fourtune, Jay Lethal was great, Samoa Joe was gaining momentum, Hernandez and Morgan were having a great rivalry, Angle versus Pope was good, and the 4 way match had potential to leave us with a great fallout. I was hoping Anderson would go heel on Hardy and that would lead to a good set of matches. This ECW show has taken all of that momentum away.

On a side Note, Gunner and Murphy have wrestled for NWA Anarchy as Phil Shatter and Mikal Judas. I was very impressed with both in that promotion. Neither have great mic skills, but both did a good job in the ring. This is a group that would be great with an old school manager or a valet.

I've never said this before but I think TNA usually puts up an amazing show. Everyone should try doing what TNA does and you'll see it's not that easy. They have really stepped it up from the days of AJ styles vs Samoa Joe being the biggest thing they had to offer. If you want to see athletes then watch MMA. This is entertainment. I think the guys that really call themselves wrestlers and take their in ring craft too seriously are a JOKE, that's right the guys like Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels. Those guys don't have the looks to be in this business. If those guys want to be tough then they should take it to MMA. I'll take Kevin Nash over Samoa Joe anyday of the week. That's reallity to me yet you online writers don't agree and instead you worship these jokes like gods. This isn't the circus either, I'm looking at you MOTOR CITY!

I still think the backlash that Hogan is getting is the most unfair part of all. When you look at the fact that Jeff Hardy is on this roster, RVD, Ric Flair, Sting, Kurt Angle, and countless others all doing thier thing, wrestling and performing being in the main events and ratings haven't grown, yet nobody questions whether any of these guys still have it. The lack of ratings growth all falls in the shoulders of Hulk Hogan "He's killing TNA." "Fire him Dixie Carter!" The double standard here is just amazing man.

RVD and Sting were just featured in a Pay per View a month ago and nobody bought it. That of course was Hogan's fault also.

"TNA use to be godly before Hogan came!"

Yeah that's why ratings were tiny compared to WWE even back then? And blame Hogan and all of the TNA managers for thinking that bringing in some known names was a good idea in achieving growth.

One thing I will say is that I agree that the writing needs work. I've been saying for a while that TNA needs to look into making changes to the writing or creative team. Stories breakdown too often. The author of this blog pointed out a bunch of mistakes in this weeks episode alone and I totally agree with most of them. No disrespect to them either, I mean TNA has gotten so many new wrestlers so fast and the pressure to showcase everything in 2 hours can't be easy. That's what is working against TNA also, they need to chillout, the pressure they are putting on themselves to grow is a problem.

And they need to reduce that roster, it's getting out of hand, it's getting scary, it's turning into the biggest thing in this world.

Real solid wrestling again. This ECDub angle or one-time show isn't going to do it for me. Heyman needs to come in to save it, and take control.

Robert Roode and James Storm should go solo. Roode is definitely World Champ material. I can see them losing to the Guns and then being full-time with Fortune for some undetermined angle in the future.

I can see Eck/Schmuck going extreme if there is a rematch.

I'd say the EV2.0/KISS comparison is apt. both are past their prime, overrated in their prime, have a loyal following, and rely on gimmicks to cover for their lack of talents

"With Young bringing a mannequin to the ring on this show and Al Snow being involved in the ECW reunion, perhaps Young and Snow are “headed” for a showdown."

What does everybody want?!
What does everybody need?!

What that show needed was a "Shoot" beat down of Hogan. I, too, was disappointed with the Sarita/Love match. It wasn't very smooth. I think that Sarita can pull off the heel act but I'm not believing Love as a face, or even a tweener. MCMG was fabulous, but the beer bottle was in the cage? The dive off of the top was insane. Next week's Ultimate X tag match has got real possibilities to be MOY caliber, IF they let it run 12+ minutes. I missed Bischoff's big announcement. Oh, don't get me wrong, I watched every second of the show, I just thought that the big announcement would be so much more. In the PPV, do you think Taz gets involved?

and next week the knockouts title will be renamed the western states heritage championship.

EV2.0! EV2.0! EV2.0! EV2.0!

No, it doesn't quite roll off the tongue as well. Then again, neither does referring to TNA's version of the nWo as "The Band." It sure does hurt to not have those copyrighted names. What in the world would TNA do if WWE had a complete copyright on all things Hulk Hogan?

As a longtime fan of the ECW, I find it insulting to hear that sellout rock band mentioned in the same breath as the hardcore originals

When Hogan got into the ring with the ECW, sorry, EV2.0 guys, I had this vision of Hogan being put through a flaming table. Sadly, it was not to be. A man can dream, can't he?

EV2.0 was mentioned in the same breath with the reunion of the greatest rock group of all-time? Hmm, I don't recall them mentioning Led Zeppelin!

TNA seemed so close to hitting full stride, but now it appears they have hit the creativity wall with a full splat. The ECW angle is a dud without Paul Heyman.

TNA also dropped the ball big time on Fortune. And, Flair to wrestle again? Please. That has less appeal than Raven licking Tommy Dreamer.

If it gets to a fifth and deciding match, the Motor City Machine Guns v Beer Money contest should be given at least thirty minutes of air time. Surely, no one will be broken hearted if Rob Terry and Orlando Jordan's screen time suffer...except for maybe Rob & Orlando.

Is it true Kaz called the TNA fans the "TNA Galaxy"?

Oh my, Abyss has Bischoff cornered and is about to use Janice... RVD's music plays. Oh my, Abyss has Dreamer down and is about to use Janice... Raven's music plays. Oh my, Dreamer has Janice... commercial... Janice is gone. Hmm... Janice needs to retire and join Samoa Joe's Rambo knife.

Hogan, the king of hyperbole, said that Bischoff had big news. Please tell me that Abyss interrupted him before he finished. A PPV quality Impact (whatever that means), that's all?

Ya the whole Hardy/Anderson/Morgan angle was a disaster.

Flair describing Lethal as his "smallest black brother" was kinda an odd thing to say. Maybe not rascist, but unnecessarily racial and kinda made for an akward moment.

From what I've heard, the card for the August 12th special is what was supposed to be the card for Hard Justice before it became the ECW reunion show Hardcore Justice. All the matches that will be announced this week (don't worry, no spoilers) will be matches you'd expect them to put on PPV.
Also, Kevin, what do you think about Consequences Creed debuting in FCW this past week?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Creed is young and definitely has potential.

I don't know about you Kevin, But I can't keep up with the face/heel changes every week. Eric Young is heel, then face, back to heel, etc. Same thing with Bubba, Sarita, A.J. , Angelina - insert ANY TNA name here... Looks like they had a fued starting between Team 3D, but the EV2.0 storyline jumped in between storylines. These former hardcore wrestlers aren't what they used to be 10 years ago and should remeber the time they had & quit trying to relive them again. No matter what company they're in. TNA is still diggin for old relics when their own rising stars are getting old as I type. They'll never gain a following that veteran wrestlers have. What a shame...

I'm hoping that they explain what that face licking thing is. Everything else about the segment made sense.

OK. Here's what I got outta the facelicking thing: Raven telling Dreamer, "I own you." Like that car commercial not that long ago. Which make? Couldn't tell ya. Shows ya how good that commerical was.

Also who can't afford a new car.

as much as I can't stand WWE booking & writing, TNA still manages to come off as inferior even with better matches on a weekly basis. Is there even a major TNA story line right now? It was Hogan/Bischoff against Sting, then that turned into Nash against Hogan/Bischoff which was then for some reason turned into Nash versus Jarrett. Then the ECW guys started showing up and the main story line in TNA is a reunion show featuring a bunch of guys who have spent the past 10 years jobbing (some even IN TNA) while the World Title feud has almost been relegated to 2 minutes per show.

Also the Abyss "They" thing doesn't even make me think because TNA does this kind of crap all the time. Whether its the guys that kidnapped Samoa Joe or Sting's super-super-super-super-super-secret-ulterior motives for his heel turn (which we were also supposed to act shocked over like we hadn't seen him join a heel faction the previous year already) TNA I think just likes to have "something up their sleeve" in case what they're doing doesn't work out. Like they just tease these huge angles that they actually have nothing in mind for. I'll bet once it even gets time for Abyss to reveal who THEY are Sting will emerge from the back and say "Hold on Abyss, they don't need to worry about THEM as much as they need to worry about US!" and then shift to teasing for 8 weeks who "us" are and then rinse & repeat.

Beer Money vs MCMGs was a definite five star match. Hopefully this is the quality of match Bischoff is talking about.

So where's Sting?.......he's disappeared from TV again?

Sorry, but the greatest rock group of all time is Led Zeppelin.

I don't know what it is, but something's up...

I just found that whole ECW guys/Hogan segment to be really uncomfortable and awkward. Why did Hogan say "If I knew about this, I would have had a few more surprises for you guys."

Between that and the overacting (even for them) Hogan and Bischoff have portrayed when either talking to or about Dixie.

If this leads to a Hogan/Bischoff heel turn, I'm not sure where this could go. I feel like week to week, they continue to just make things up as they go along and see what sticks. No consistency, no follow-through. Such is TNA.

Oh, and KISS seriously is one of the biggest disgraces in music history. Glad you don't write a music blog.

Kevin Please,

KISS...."greatest rock group of all time"

Reserve your opinions for the wrestling realm......obviously, your taste in rock music blows.....

otherwise, I love your blogs

MCMG and BM should have a best of 50. The best thing going in wrestling today.

KISS can't lace the Ramones sneakers.

From what I heard, this show had the highest rating that TNA has had since February; either 1.2 or 1.3, i forget. That has to be a thorn into the side of Hogan that after all these ideas that he and Bischoff have come up with, an ECW angle finally brings the ratings up, hopefully not just for one week.
