Smackdown: Cody Rhodes gets to play with the big boys (and Rey Mysterio)

When Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes were first put together with Randy Orton to form Legacy, the popular opinion (and one that I shared) was that when it came time for the inevitable breakup of the group, DiBiase was going to become a superstar, while Rhodes was destined to be a solid mid-carder.

At this point, however, it is Rhodes who is higher on the card and is the more compelling character of the two.

On Friday night’s Smackdown, Rhodes appeared in three segments and wrestled in the main event, teaming with Jack Swagger against world champion Rey Mysterio and The Big Show.

I’m still not sure I like the “dashing” nickname, but Rhodes is playing the character well and he carries himself like a star in the ring. I loved the backstage segment in which he held up a comb like it was a microphone and interviewed himself in the bathroom mirror.

In all fairness to Raw’s DiBiase, it’s definitely easier to move up the card on Smackdown, where you don’t have to compete with the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, Chris Jericho and others at the top, but Rhodes still deserves credit for making the most of his opportunity.

At least DiBiase does have one perk that Rhodes doesn’t: he gets to work with Maryse.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Six of the eight slots have been filled for the Smackdown Money in the Bank ladder match at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view on July 18: Rhodes, The Big Show, Christian, Matt Hardy, Kane and Kofi Kingston. I have read where CM Punk and Drew McIntyre were originally supposed to be the other two participants, but Punk is out for four-to-eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his arm and McIntyre was written out of the story line because his work visa expired. Since McIntyre’s issues have been resolved, I wouldn’t be surprised if he still ended up in the match. Dolph Ziggler and MVP also are candidates. Unlike the Raw MITB match that is evenly divided (four babyfaces, four heels), the Smackdown match right now is babyface-heavy (although Kane hates everybody these days). …

“The Peep Show” segment with Christian and Hardy was strong. I liked the shoot aspect to the dialogue, as they both talked about being under-appreciated by WWE management and not being the “chosen ones.” I’ve never really been impressed with Hardy’s delivery on the mic but this was one of his better performances. …

I liked the angle with Serena being caught on video drinking alcohol in a bar and I’m interested to see where it leads, but I don’t get why Kane would so easily accept that as proof that the Straight Edge Society had nothing to do with the attack on The Undertaker. …

The action was good in the main event, and the finish – Swagger again was disqualified for refusing to release the ankle lock, this time on Mysterio – solidified the idea that Swagger is a dangerous threat to the world title. …

The Kingston-Ziggler match was solid but I was shocked that Ziggler didn’t win this non-title match with the Intercontinental champion to set up a title bout. One of these days Ziggler is going to be a champion. I’m really surprised that it hasn’t happened yet. …

Vickie Guerrero wasn’t very pleased with Ziggler losing, so that could be the end of them as a couple. I hope not. …

The Big Show said during his promo that no one wants Swagger to be world champion again. That’s not true. Let’s see, there’s me, Jack Swagger’s daddy, and, well, I’m sure a whole lot of other people. …

The Kelly Kelly-Michelle McCool match (won by KK) was entertaining for what it was, thanks in part to the stuff going on outside the ring with Tiffany and Layla. …

Before facing MVP, Chavo Guerrero said that after he wins the match, he deserves an Intercontinental title shot. MVP burst out laughing – as did I and probably everyone else in the “WWE Universe” who was watching. Of course MVP won clean in about two minutes. …

Matt Striker’s best line of the night occurred when he was discussing how good-looking Rhodes is: “He makes those ‘Twilight’ kids look like Sir Oliver Humperdink.” I’m such a mark for Striker’s references that only the old-school fans get. …

I got a kick out of the “This Week in WWE History” segment, which featured Lex Luger body-slamming then-WWF champion Yokozuna on the U.S.S. Intrepid on July 4, 1993. As the video package showed, Luger subsequently embarked on a cross-country bus tour known as “The Lex Express,” as WWE attempted to turn Luger into a Hulk Hogan-like babyface leading up to his match against Yokozuna for the championship at SummerSlam. The voiceover during the piece said that Luger was successful against Yokozuna, and the video showed Luger celebrating in the ring and balloons falling from the ceiling. In reality, Luger only won that match by count-out, and he never did capture the title. The “Lex Express” was a colossal flop.

"Ziggler is going to be a champion. I’m really surprised that it hasn’t happened yet."

u seem to be a fan of ziggler so im pretty sure u know this, but i was watching an old dvd with the spirit squad vs dx and recognized ziggler as squad member nicky. hilarious. but they were tag champs, so he has already been a champion. i know thats not what u meant but i couldnt pass up the chance to catch u in a technicality

The Lex Express ruined my summer vacation as a little kid. No Bret, no Shawn, no Undertaker, just that damn bus and Lex Luger on every single inch of WWF television for what seemed like years.

John Cena's God push has nothing on the Lex Express debacle.

The Straight Edge Society has been a frustrating faction for me over the past month or two. Are we ever going to learn the identity of the masked member of the SES? And is Punk ever going to take his mask off?

I liked the angle with Serena being caught on video drinking alcohol in a bar and I’m interested to see where it leads, but I don’t get why Kane would so easily accept that as proof that the Straight Edge Society had nothing to do with the attack on The Undertaker. …

I guess maybe they somehow knew exactly when Taker was attacked, and it happened to be during the minute or so that Punk was in the bar. I won't think too hard about the likelihood of those two things happening at the exact same time, nor whether it makes sense for the bar to give its security tape to a bald drunk girl whose friends caused a scene in the place and scared off a customer, presumably out of the goodness of their heart.

Yeah, Kev, 'Dashing Cody Rhodes' just doesn't roll off the tongue.
They need an alliterated name so start hitting that thesaurus.

I didn't like the whole 'Serena in a bar' footage.
It was twee, unbelievable, poorly acted and simply too convenient.

I notice Layla was using a fragrance/deodorant to spray 'ugly' people.
No doubt yet another remarkable coincidence.

I'm not a big fan of the Vickie/Dolph pairing right now but it is way too soon for it to end.. unless it leads to Dolph FINALLY getting a title opportunity. He always seems to get so close.

One of these days, Chavo will get a push. Then we'll see who's laughing! For real, maybe somehow something possibly will maybe come from him being the third wheel to Dolph & Vickie?? I can always hope!

Hey Kev, I agree with you on Rhodes' position on the card. I for one always thought Rhodes was stronger than Dibiase on the mic during their Legacy days, but Dibiase had the size and in ring work.
I think the Shawn Michaels/Marty Jannetty theory of tag teams (one becomes the superstar, one fades away) is sometimes misleading. Case in point, John Morrison was always thought of as the "main event waiting to happen" and he was thought to have been "stuck" with the Miz.....now look at where Morrison is and look at where the Miz is.
Now it looks like Rhodes has the stronger upside and star potential than the stale "fortunate son" Dibiase.

I was rooting for Lex to win the title that night (and I'm a Yoko fan), so the Lex Exxpress wasn't a TOTAL bust.

I think it was that bionic forearm of his. I was a kid at the time, so...

Used to hit hit people with that running forearm all the time in that Royal Rumble game. So much fun.

I'm really pleased for Cody. I often find myself disagreeing with the prevailing "smark" opinion, and this is a good example, as I've always thought Cody had TONS more charisma than DiBiase, and is perfectly great to watch in the ring. I suppose DiBiase has better aggression and is bigger, but the difference isn't close to making up for the gap in personality. DiBiase kind of drones on when he talks, whereas Cody is, for me, very entertaining.

The gimmick doesn't suit him though. He doesn't seem fussy and "pretty boy" enough. The condescending, entitled attitude in Legacy was fine as it was, they should just have tweaked that and let him make it his own. But he'll still make it entertaining as it is.

To be honest, I was never that big on Ted DiBiase Jr. I thought and I still do believe he was getting praise only because of who his father is. I mean really, T.D. Jr has no charisma.

I maybe wrong but the only notable matches I can think of that T.D. Jr looked solid were his ppv matches against dx.

Can the SES be booked to look even more like weak chumps than they already have in the past two months?

What did Punk do wrong to get relegated to a feud with Kane? He was the clear star of the feud with Mysterio, yet his entire faction is being taken down single handedly by Kane while the puny World sans-Heavyweight Champion Mysterio is clearing the ring of multiple heels.

I hope they do not do the story line where Rhodes is afraid to have someone punch him in his pretty face...which they might actually do if there is a Rhodes/Big Show program.

Dashing Cody Rhodes works for me. If you keep saying it many times it will eventually sink in. At least It's better than Ink Inc.

Memories...I got a t-shirt from the Lex Express when the buss rolled in to Winter's Run Inn. Of all places, but it doesn't suprise me the boys knew of good haunts on Philadelphia Road. I don't think they just stopped to give out swag. lol

To me, Cody Rhodes has always showed that he was the better of the two Legacy members. He just seems like a natural in the ring and on the mic.

Your reference to the Lex Express brings back some good memories or should I say bad memories. I was a huge Hogan fan and even at the tender age of 14 I carried alot of resentment toward Lugar and that bus. Even though it was Yokozuna who won the title from Hogan it was Lugar who I was bitter toward for trying to replace our beloved Hulk Hogan. Not to mention it was an awful awful gimmick. Never have I been so happy to see a heel retain his title as I was that saturday morning after sumerslam on Superstars when I saw Yokozuna holding his then WWF title. Yes I had to wait nearly a week for the results because I had no access to PPV or the internet. The internet whats that? That wont be comminly used for another 5 years. It is 1993 you know. Kevin your the man keep up the great blog. Only can a couple days can pass before I have to visit the Baltimore Sun page to get my wrestling Gossip fix.

Did you hear the guy in the crowd yelling excuse me as Vickie was walking away after the Ziggler match?

Regarding the bar footage: I thought it was funny how Joey Mercury had his mask on. It would have been even better if Punk was wearing his mask too. And it looked like Luke may have been wearing his wrestling gear.

Another good line from Striker: calling Dashing Cody Rhodes' new move the Dashiel Hammett.

Like the title of this entry, Kev, and happy for Cody Rhodes. But given the caliber of participants in this match (no Orton, HHH, Undertaker, or even Cena), it's not much to write home about. In fact, I would invoke the words Kevin Nash once uttered to Eric Bischoff, "Notice the adjective: 'play'."

They should keep Rhodes and Swagger as a tag team....Call them LipSync

I must agree with John that Dashing Cody Rhodes doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Dashing Dusty Runnels, maybe.
They could have tied in Layla's deodorant spraying and made him Compost Cody Rhodes.
Whatever the name, the guy has talent, as does DiBiase. I believe Rhodes is 25 and DiBiase is 27. Both have high ceilings in the business and are capable of headlining shows.

Chavo is way underrated. He really is an amazing wrestler.

Dashing Cody Rhodes isn't such a bad gimmick, considering neither his dad nor his brother are anything one would consider "dashing." The point of Legacy was proving they were better than their ancestry, so it seems logical that Cody would play up on the fact that he's in better shape and easier on the eyes, as opposed to the portliness of Dusty Rhodes or the oddity of Goldust. He truly has made every attempt to create his own persona like Randy Orton, instead of making the past an extension of his future, as T.D. Jr has.
