Quick hits on WWE NXT

• Husky Harris was in the bottom two of the voting by the pros and fans for the second consecutive poll, but he again managed to avoid elimination. On Tuesday night’s episode of WWE NXT, Eli Cottonwood became the second rookie to be sent home. Unlike when Titus O’Neil was eliminated in the first poll last month, I didn’t agree with the decision this time. I would have booted off Harris.

• Here are the results of the voting (my rankings are in parentheses): 1. Michael McGillicutty (4); 2. Kaval (1); 3. Alex Riley (2); 4. Percy Watson (3); 5. Lucky Cannon (6); 6. Harris (7); 7. Cottonwood (5).

• McGillicutty vaulting from No. 3 in the first poll to the top spot surprised me. Perhaps fans are taking the win-loss records seriously, as McGillicutty is 5-0, while Kaval – who was No. 1 in the initial poll – is 1-4.

• Cottonwood did not go quietly after he was eliminated, as he beat up several of the rookies and shoved his pro, John Morrison. With Cottonwood’s size (he’s around 7 foot) and odd facial expressions, I’m willing to bet that he’ll be on Raw or Smackdown in the near future and will end up making a bigger impact than most of his fellow rookies.

• It’s pretty obvious that WWE sees something in Harris, as it has put him over strong the past two shows in an effort to help him get votes. Last week he scored a pinfall victory over MVP in a tag team match, and Tuesday he defeated Kaval. Kaval losing to Harris is a joke, although he did have an “out,” as he was distracted by Lay-Cool being knocked off the ring apron.

• The pros were back on the apron for all of the matches this week. You knew someone was bound to get knocked down at some point.

• I thought Cottonwood’s power moves looked good during his match against McGillicutty, who pulled out the victory after Cottonwood has been on offense most of the way.

• Cottonwood tried to play off the horrible promo he cut three weeks ago (when he was given the word “moustache” to talk about) by wearing a t-shirt that just had “Mustache” written on the front. Morrison also wore one. It might have been better just to pretend that promo never happened.

• Speaking of promos, the rookies were all given an opportunity to speak for 60 seconds at the top of the show about any subject except why they shouldn’t be eliminated. Riley was by far the best. Cannon’s wasn’t that bad, but the fans booed him as soon as he started speaking. McGillicutty, in his promo, decided to confront The Miz about calling him “mediocre” last week. Bad decision. The Miz owned him. Cottonwood’s promo focused on the word “eyes,” and Michael Cole said, “He can look in my eyes and put me to sleep.”

• Watson got a big win over Zack Ryder. You could really see in this match that Watson is very athletic but still green. He throws a great dropkick and I love the standing splash that he does in which he changes direction in mid-air. His float-over DDT wasn’t the smoothest, though. It was said in commentary that Ryder wrestled despite having walking pneumonia.

• I like how the pros are out of character for the most part when evaluating the rookies in the video packages. Cody Rhodes said of Kaval: “If we lived in a fair world, Kaval would be the next breakout star.” Mark Henry said that “Kaval is probably the most polished of all the WWE rookies.” Probably?

• After Kaval cut a promo on Harris backstage, Michelle McCool punctuated it by saying, “That’s real talk.” I thought that worked well.

Husky Harris had his greatest showing on this show. While I still believe that he should've been the 'everyman' face to Cody Rhodes' self-absorbed heel, I'm starting to buy in to his character.

Next elimination I think Lucky "I'm a polite hansome guy with a good story" Cannon needs to go. His promo was good, but I feel like he's told it several times before. You came a long way, we get it. Now that you're here, show us what you got.

Being good on the mic can be seen as having two qualities. 1) Being smooth and getting your point across. 2) Showing charisma or personality. As much as I like Watson, he often lacks no. 1. Saying 'you know what I'm saying' and 'oh yeah' will only get him so far.

I usually agree with your observations kev. so im really surprised that you dont like husky harris.

first of all, he's great on the mic. even when he stumbled over some words a couple of weeks ago, he covered it up real well.

and his build is a throwback to the greats of generations ago. big, not well chiseled, but can really go in the ring.

you cant exactly say that about eli conttonwood. he looks very clumsy in the ring. but you think he's going to make a huge impact later?

so you like cottonwood's unique look but not husky's? even though husky is miles ahead of cottonwood wrestling-wise and promo-wise?

my guess is that harris continues to be second to the last up until the final weeks of competition. that means lucky cannon.... you're next to go.

Hey, Kev! You might want to edit the rankings up there. It starts off being the NXT show rankings with yours in parenthasis, but about position 5 morphs into your rankings with the show's in parenthasis.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks! I fixed it.

You prefer Cottonwood over Harris? For shame, Eck, for shame!

Harris is personally my favorite.
he offers something fresh and unique.
the lazy but dangerous slob.
i like.

I don't watch NXT, but the fix is in. "McGillicuddy's" bloodlines are going to get him the win. He was already scheduled to be in the E as a tag team with Brett DiBiase, until Brett got hurt, so this is just a showcase for young Mr. Hennig.

Kinda surprised you aren't down with Harris. I'm glad he avoided elimination, he's shown great progress, much more than Eli Khaliwood has. He may be 7 foot tall, but he hasn't shown me much inside of the ring.

I agree with the above commenter who said that Harris should be a face.

I like that they didn't edit out the bit where Kaval said that he worked in the indies for years under the name Low Ki.
Then again, Bryan Danielson did the same and that didn't help him any.

I like Husky Harris. Is that what John Belushi would have looked like as a wrestler? Not a bad package.

Kaval is a lot of fun to watch. Could be the heir to Rey Mysterio's niche as the overachieving little guy in the future.

Cottonwood has a unique presence and his size will help carry him to a higher level.

McGuillicuty has potential but does not stand out yet.

Watson is athletic and has charisma of some kind. I think he has a future.

Meh regarding Riley and Cannon. Nothing special there, though Riley's mike skills might convert me.

Kaval is certainly the most polished of the rookies and his moves look like they would absolutely hurt (his stiff style makes him look so dangerous)
But I have to say I like Husky Harris. Part of it is the throwback look he has (certainly not that lanky frame of his uncle Barry Wyndham) I also like his moveset and his stamina in the ring. And I love they describe his speed as "a ferrari engine in a tank body"

I'm still not seeing what the big deal is with McGillicutty. Your #4 ranking seems about right. His promos and matches are only average; I don't know why I should care. Definitely not #1.

But come on Kevin, how can you like the awkward, clumsy, badly spoken Cottonwood freak over Harris?

At least admit Harris' promo this week was excellent... the best from him yet, and one of the best this season.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I thought Harris' promo was serviceable at best. Looks like Tarzan, fights like Jane is such a cliche.
What I like about Cottonwood is that he is a "freak" as you said. I like his look and his presence, not to mention the fact that he is 7-feet tall. Being a WWE star isn't just about who is the smoothest in the ring. With that being said. does he need to get better in the ring and on the mic? Absolutely, but when I look at these "rookies," I'm looking at their potential upsides, not necessarily where they are right now.

Hey Kev, I think Husky had a strong showing tonight. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who feels this way, but I feel that he carries himself like a star, and there's something about him that reminds me of Stone Cold. That aside, I agree with you that Husky should've gone and not Eli. I was REALLY impressed to see Eli perform all those powermoves on McGuillicutty on NXT and it sure is a spectacle to see a man of his size wrestle like that.

People that don't believe Cottonwood will make a bigger impact than most of the rookies clearly don't know one Vincent Kennedy McMahon. I bet that a list of the former and future WWE Hall of Famers that have one less world title reign than The Great Khali would drive home the point.

I was suprised Kaval said that we was known as Low-Ki for the past 10 years, hopefully that doesnt mean WWE now owns the rights to the name Low-KI

Who cares if Cottonwood is 7 feet? I'm sick of seeing 7 foot guys who suck clog up the WWE roster and get pushes over guys who can - you know - wrestle. I can't believe you subscribe to the Vince McMahon philosophy of "If the guy is 7 foot and has a look - he's a budding star." Who buys tickets to see big oafs like that? Certainly not anyone I know.

Kev I have to admit I like Harris aswell, WWE needs to put on more entertaining matches on free TV. We get enough of the promos, Raw is roughly 80-20 in favour of promos and shenanigans!

Husky looks like he can go in the ring, he has a real old school feel about him and his mic skills certainly aren't the worst on the show by a long way.

The reason I think he's ranked so low is that generally his supporters will likely also be Kaval fans for the same reasons, work ethic, ring ability etc. Kaval will scalp a lot of Husky's potential supporters votes.

Cannon should have gone. Hard to believe he wasn't even on the chopping block. NXT must have a lot of female viewers.

He needs to adopt a heart throb persona or something to go with his name.

I'm p***ed that Cottonwood got eliminated, but I'm sure he'll be back. He looked pretty "polished" himself in the ring this week, keeping in mind that he's working with a "Big man," copy-paste moveset.

Looks like your in the minority about Husky Harris....i certainly don't think he should win, but he's defintely better then Cottonwood and Cannon.

Lucky needs to go next! He is so boring ad plain. Glad to see Cottonwood go, with that size he is not intimidating whatsoever.

I was gonna say something about Husky, but it seems as though most people have already said it. Kev, like eee said lol, you're in the minority I think about not liking Harris. He's got a good look, good charisma, and definitely can go in the ring.

I laughed at the end when Cottonwood shoved Morrison, and you could hear Zach Ryder tell Morrison "you got punked bro" haha hilarious! Did you hear that? That was hilarious!

how could you not like Husky. He has a different in ring style then anyone else, but it is entertaining unlike Cottonwoods in ring style. His gimmick is lame. What kind of gimmick is Mustache. I haven't seen somebody think hes better because of a mustache since Family Guy. Out of the 8 the one who stands out to me the most is Husky Harris. My ranking is this. 1: Alex Riley. 2: Kaval. 3:Michael Mcgillicutty. 4: Husky Harris. 5: Percy Watson, 6: Eli Cottonwood. 7: Lucky Cannon. By the way could Cottonwood be the attacker of the Undertaker. No way.

I think Husky stands out because in promos, it feels like he is speaking, not a character. It is like hearing big fat defensive lineman talking just after a game combined with a NASCAR driver ready to fight.

Apparently John Cena ripped Percy Watson on his twitter account.

I'm no fan of Watson, but if Cena is so frustrated with him and other rookies then why doesn't he be a pro on NXT....oh that's right b/c they all have more talent then him and would probably show him up.
(with obvious exceptions no names needed)

Great to hear from all the Husky fans. This kid has got it in the ring. What a worker. His wrestling style is something you cant teach--how to take a bump.

Riley is clearly the best with Harris right behind. I think by all the posts you can see your way off on Harris.
