LeBron James spectacle was right out of pro wrestling – and that’s a compliment

It’s no secret that LeBron James is a pro wrestling fan, and I’m convinced that he and his handlers took their cues from WWE when putting together the mega-hyped special on ESPN Thursday night in which James revealed that he was signing with the Miami Heat.

Was it a dog-and-pony show? Absolutely, but it's all anyone has been talking about, and if you’re even a casual sports fan, you couldn’t resist watching even if you loathed the idea of such a spectacle.

Personally, I found the whole thing more entertaining than any NBA game this past season except for Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. It was great theater and it stirred people’s emotions.

Vince McMahon couldn’t have done it any better himself.

This is all about team work and the willingness the sacrifice for a championship, nothing more real than that

In the words of Gorilla Monsoon - "Are you kidding?! What a despicable act that was!"

(Followed by the best Bobby Heenan line ever: "Did you see that? Jannetty tried to dive through the window to escape! What an act of cowardness!")

Not unlike Randy Savage revealing his choice for manager back in the day. Maybe LeBron should have had all of the GMs of the contending teams on the podium with him like Savage did.

I am proud to say I did not waste a second of my life on it. I think it is really sad that it is "all anyone has been talking about." And I'm disappointed that it made its way into this blog.

The Heat are aptly named seeing as Miami now boasts the best heel faction since the nWo. Now that they've signed their three "outsiders," all that needs to happen is for Pat Riley to fire his coach, return to the bench and fill the Bishoff role.

Lebron joining the Heat is like Hogan joining the NWO! Bosh (Hall) and Wade (Nash) are the Outsiders. Pat Riley is Eric Bischoff and Mickey Arison is Billionaire Ted.

disgraceful journalism...Stuart Scott and Jim Gray are such kiss @ss hacks.

Yes, “The Decision” has been made, but this is a hilarious article mocking the process
LeBron James announces that he will buy the Miami Heat, endorse the New York Knicks, marry two of the LA Clippers’ Spirit Dancers in a Utah ceremony in August, become Executive Vice President of Mining and Distribution for Polyus Gold (NJ Nets’ owner Mikhail Prokhorov’s gold empire) and play basketball part-time for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Read the FUNNY article here:

i loved lebron's heel turn! it was like austin joining with vince to win the title at wm17 in texas.
he stabbed his home team in the heart on national tv, but like a great heel, he did what he thought he had to in order to get what he wants.

My friends didn't understand how Cle fans could be hurt or even mad right now

I had to explain to them how the Browns were literally moved from their city at midnight in '95

Then how LeBron could have respectfully told them he was leaving anywhere from 2008-10.

Instead, he played with that city's heart, had all his suitors come to Ohio and drool over him, and then announce his decision on national TV without softening the blow for the fans back home!

It would be like if you knew your marriage might be on the rocks...and your wife played around like she might stay faithful to it...until this month when she invites future partners to your home and announces her intentions to you that she's divorcing you after she says she's choosing her new man.

Lawd LeBron....I can't respect this! I hope he wins a ring, but only after he gets bounced out the playoffs by the Cavs.

Greatest heel turn since Hulk Hogan at Bash at the Beach. LeBron v. Dan Gilbert is a prime candidate for feud of the year!

Being in Akron and a huge Cavaliers fan (notice I didn't say LeBron fan), I am extremely disappointed in everything that went on and I did see the "spectacle" as a heel tur. With a few words he became a villain or he could've become a hero. Dan Gilbert is the hero here and should be commended for showing emotion. We're all pretty p***ed off out here! Kev-thanks for bringing the situation up in your blog...

At the last minute in the conference Lebron should have stated that he was forming his own league and taking the free agents (Bosh Wade) with him. NOw that would have been a heel turn!

Was I the only one who thought he'd be surrounded by the Greenwich posse?

Next big news item: TNA announces that LeBron will face Dan Gilbert in Daytona at Bound for Glory! :D

It seems like LeBron must be a WWE fan. Is it a coincidence that his "special" came on Thursday night at 9 PM? Does anyone know of VKM's whereabouts at that time?

Was that the TNA announcer doing the voiceover at the beginning of "The Decision."

RESPONSE FROM KE: Sure sounded like him.

Yes, but this is real, damn real!

LJ showed no class or humility for real!

Sorry can't condone that despite loving prowrestling, where everyone knows what goes on is mostly part of a scripted storyline.

I made a point in a recent blog that the differences between real sports and pro wrestling is becoming less all the time with real sports becoming more and more like a contrived wrestling storyline but for real, which makes it a not so good thing. Different contexts, different value propositions.

I find teh whole Lebron thing to be mostly sad and indicative of much is wrong with this country these days.

Sorry, but that's DAMN REAL!

Damnit Big Nasty you beat me to the punch! This was just like Hulk Hogan's heel turn in WCW.

Not an American, so...who is LeBron James?

The LeBron James circus was as stupid and lame as any WWE storyline coming out of Stamford.

If you take it step-by-step, this IS Hogan joining the NWO:

Good for LeBron. He never had a full supporting cast to win a title in Cleveland. 2 year olds act better than Dan Gilbert did.

Why are people hating on LeBron James about the hoopla? The decision was LeBron's choice, so hating on him for leaving Cleveland or going to Miami is understandable. But hating on him for "The Decision" (i.e. the dog-and-pony TV special surrounding his announcement) was clearly NOT his idea! If it were, then he wouldn't have made the official annoucement mid-sentence with no dramatic pause or last-second suspense.

The last time 3 athletes were this feared in sports was Hogan, Hall, and Nash and we all know how many world championships they won! H.E.A.T. 4 lyfe

This sums it up right here and I love it!!!

Actually, Vince McMahon would have done it a whole lot better than LeBron. He would have built some drama into it, instead of leading up to the announcement with a flat, rambling interview. He wouldn't have let a putz like Jim Gray anywhere near the set. And he sure as hell would have gotten it done in less than 73 minutes.

Have you noticed that Dan Gilbert and Jesse Jackson managed to turn this single story into a more interesting feud than anything we've seen from pro wrestling in a long, long time?! ;)

I hope we see Heat/Cavs cross each other in the 2011 Playoffs (I have my doubts whether the Cavs can make the playoffs without LeBron).
