Extreme angle caps TNA Impact

At the end of Thursday night’s episode of TNA Impact, the Impact Zone in Orlando was looking a bit like the ECW Arena in South Philly.

The four former ECW stars who have been sitting in the crowd in recent weeks (Tommy Dreamer, Stevie Richards, Raven and Rhino) hopped the rail and attacked Abyss, who was about to take out Rob Van Dam with his board of nails.

That touched off a wild brawl between the ex-ECW guys and TNA wrestlers. How wild was it? So much so that Team 3D’s Brother Devon and TNA producers Al Snow and Pat Kenney (formerly Simon Diamond) – who all have ECW ties – fought against their TNA colleagues.

TNA president Dixie Carter eventually got on the mic and ordered everyone to stop fighting. She said that she was the one who invited the ex-ECW guys. Mick Foley also made his return to TV during the segment, as he appeared on the ramp right before the ex-ECW faction hit the ring.

As far as the execution of the angle, I thought it was a bitter of a cluster-mess. I get it that TNA was trying to create a chaotic situation, but I found the brawl too hard to follow. Unlike WWE’s Nexus invasion angle, the battle lines here were not clearly drawn. Instead of thinking, “Wow, the ex-ECW guys attacked the TNA guys,” I was distracted by the fact that Snow – someone a lot of fans probably didn’t even know worked for TNA – was punching Jay Lethal.

I’m guessing that TNA will make things clearer next week, but I’m still not sure about doing an ECW invasion angle in 2010.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

One thing you can’t say about this episode is that it was boring. In addition to the big angle at the end, there was a ladder match, a street fight and an “I quit match. There also were a couple other marquee matchups and some good promos. …

The new TNA Top 10 rankings were announced, and Abyss was the No. 1 contender, with Jeff Hardy at No. 2. Didn’t Hardy just beat Abyss a couple weeks ago? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Hardy did better than Abyss in the online fan voting as well. ...

Judging by the fact that Dreamer, Richards, Raven and Rhino attacked Abyss, the ex-ECW guys must not be Abyss’ “they.” …

When the ex-ECW guys hit the ring, Taz said, “They don’t even work here.” That line has been so over-used over the years. It’s especially silly in this instance. Rhino and Richards have been with TNA for quite a while, and Raven made his return to TV months ago. That’s one of the problems with this angle – three of the four invaders are guys that most TNA fans know have been on the roster all along. ...

After stealing the show at the Victory Road pay-per-view last Sunday, The Motor City Machine Guns and Beer Money did it again. This time it was a ladder match, and it was the first bout in a best-of-five series between the teams for the Guns’ TNA world tag team title. James Storm won it for Beer Money when he smashed Chris Sabin over the head with a beer bottle and took the contract (which stated that the winning team gets to pick the stipulation for Match 2) that had been hanging above the ring from him while referees Earl and Brian Hebner were incapacitated. I’m really looking forward to the next four matches (you know the series is going to go five). I just hope that the developing angle with the Hebners doesn’t get in the way. …

Abyss cut a decent promo in the opening segment. Chewing on the slab of raw meat was a great visual. Disgusting, but a great visual, and very effective in getting him over as a madman ala Abdullah The Butcher. Slicing a watermelon with his board of nails didn’t produce quite the same effect. That was more Gallagher than Abdullah. …

I was excited about the match between Lethal and Hardy going into it, but it did not live up to my expectations. And why TNA would kill Lethal’s momentum by having him lose clean to anyone – even a big star such as Hardy – in a four-minute match is beyond me. I’m not saying that I think Lethal should have beaten Hardy. I would have made it an inconclusive finish, perhaps even a 10-minute draw since TNA does time limits. …

Speaking of questionable booking, what’s up with Matt Morgan jobbing to “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero in a match that didn’t even go two minutes? I don’t care that Morgan got his heat back after the match; there’s no way he should lose that easily. He’s also been losing far too frequently as of late. …

I liked how Dinero gave a little nod to Mr. Anderson rather than shake his hand after Anderson saved Dinero from Morgan after the match. It would be unrealistic for Dinero to suddenly become buddy-buddy with the guy who put him on the shelf. …

Sarita and Taylor Wilde had an entertaining street fight that was pretty stiff. The problem is that there was no buildup to this feud. We have no idea why these two went from BFFs one day to trying to kill each other the next. …

The first thing I thought of when Sarita was choking Wilde with a purse was Bryan Danielson choking ring announcer Justin Roberts with Roberts’ tie during the Nexus angle in WWE. I wasn’t the only one thinking it, as Taz said, “You can get fired for that in some companies.” Now that was funny. Wilde was even making the “choke face” like Roberts did. …

One silly spot during the street fight was when Sarita threw water in Wilde’s face and Wilde sold it like the water hurt her. …

Velvet Sky was really good on the mic during the exchange with Madison Rayne and Angelina Love. How funny was it when Love of all people made a remark about Sky having “big fake boobs?” …

Ric Flair made it official that A.J. Styles and Kazarian are the first two members of Fortune. Nothing against Kazarian, because I think he is really talented, but it amazes me that TNA sees more in him than it does in Desmond Wolfe, who was blown off by Flair. Wolfe also continued to get the cold shoulder from Chelsea, and he did the job to Samoa Joe in a threeway match that involved Rob Terry. Who in the world did Wolfe tick off? …

I wonder if Styles becoming part of Fortune means that he will not be turning babyface any time soon. …

I can’t say I’m too excited about a program between Kevin Nash and Jeff Jarrett. Heck, I wasn’t excited about it 10 years ago in WCW. …

I bet a lot of people fell off their couches laughing when Nash said that he was the best worker in the business. Then he made it clear that he was talking about backstage politics not five-star matches. In that sense, he’s definitely one of the top five of all time. …

The “I quit” match between TNA X Division champion Douglas Williams and Brian Kendrick was fine, but there was little doubt that Kendrick would win since it was non-title. …

Magnus was pretty entertaining doing commentary during the Joe-Wolfe-Terry match. …

So now we know that there’s more to Miss Tessmacher than meets the eye. Apparently, she has her own agenda and is just pretending to be a bimbo.

Overall I thought it was a strong episode of Impact. And the main star was clearly Abyss, his extra intensity is making a difference and he even brought out a very good segment out of RVD who I usually find boring.

It seems TNA figured out that it's not against the law to have more than one Knockouts segment per show. Props there!

I'm not feeling the ECW thing either, basically at the end of the show I just saw a bunch of jerks charge the ring, for what reason I don't know. Why did the ECW guys attack Abyss? Are they "THEY"? And why did Abyss sell Foleys arrival so much? Who was fighting who? I just didn't know what the hell was going on. But that didn't make or break the show. It was a good show.

I hate how some people are already saying that the Hogan/Biscoff era is over and enter team extreme. I can't believe some people will go that route. I mean what changed? What is TNA doing other than using the guys that have joined TNA and have been pushed ever since Hogan arrived? Examples... Abyss, Lethal, RVD, Hardy, Anderson. I hate to say it but Hogan isn't the creative writing team. it's not Hogans fault you don't like how some guys have been used. Even worse, spreading rumors that Hogan is bitter and selling back injuries to avoid being on TNA and sending Dixie Carter a message. I mean that guy busted his crippled 60 year old a** in the ring, just to try to help TNA ratings.

Regarding the ECW Invasion, I can see Dixie Carter saying that she brought them in to be her personal "troubleshooters" in response to the behavior of wrestlers like Sting, Abyss etc. similar to what Vince McMahon did with the NWO years ago. If it's done right it could work but you are correct Kevin in that they haven't started thing angle off well.

If they want Abyss to really get over as a true monster they should let him completely destroy and bloody a mid-level popular babyface and not an X-Division type either.

Could it be that Miss Tessmacher is part of THEY?

I’m not saying that I think Lethal should have beaten Hardy.

I will, then. Hardy shouldn't be above putting guys like Lethal over.

Hey Kevin i think the mystery girl on the bike is Cristie Hemmie or Micky James what do think

They've built okay on Xplosion, of course, it's a program that no one on the United States can watch on TV. It is on youtube but that's a fan upload. TNA needs to get on that. Put some recaps next time instead of just cutting straight to them brawling.

Morgan jobbing was weird. Kaz has always looked like a douche so him playing one actually works for him. Magnus is a better talent than Rob Terry and he also cares about TNA more since he was one of the first to come out.

Jarrett needs to get out of everyone's business. Instead of TNA founder, he should be announced as the Guardian of Hogan and Bischoff's reputation.

The brawl was edited, removing Ink Inc saving RVD from Abyss and some other stuff as to why the agents started attacking TNA wrestlers. I'm not sure why TNA wrestlers decided to attack ECW. They attacked Abyss, someone who doesn't care about anyone and made that much clear. I guess they don't like ECW guys taking all the focus off their matches by showing up?

Kev, this is probably the first post in a while where I have 100% agreed with you on so many topics consecutively! Abyss smashing/eating the watermelon kind of devalued the opening of the show...as you said, very Gallagher.

I was wondering to myself as well if Nash made the comment about being "one of the greatest workers in the business" to get some cheap heat, or if he honestly believes that? I know the fans aren't buying it.

Lastly, the brawl that closed out the show was kind of corny. Not only was it hard to follow, but the way TNA's ramp is set up kind of set up a cheesy "assembly line" effect where people were coming down single file to enter on the same side of the ring and get pounded. I really wish they would modify that thing.

A very good show all and all. I think this ECW angle is a prelude for Heyman. I can see Dixie stating she made a mistake bringing in Hogan and needs Heyman to get the company straight. Hopefully Heyman does come in.

Very good matches on this show. TNA can really deliver the goods when they go this route.

I think TNA has failed with the whole babyface/heel concept in their knockout division. OK, Rayne is a heel, but that's all I really know for sure. I think Sarita is supposed to be a heel, but I kinda like watching her beat the crap out of Wilde. Are TBP splitting up, is this just a ruse like Love said, I am supposed to feel sorry for Sky and LVE?

I said before that Lethal needs to be in the X division. Thursday was finally an example of him running into a wall that he didn't need to run into. If he shifted to the x division he could've started a feud with Kaz who doesn't seem to have a rival at the moment. Perhaps put him in a program with Douglas and Kendrick and have Kaz cost Lethal the title to start their fued. Having him look like an enhancement guy for Hardy seemed like a total waste.

Who says *I QUIT* to the Cobra Clutch these days?

After the first 20 minutes of this show, I thought TNA had blown it. I'm not crazy about Abyss' weapon, mainly because it is so deadly you know he will never be able to use it. It is more effective to hide a pair of "brass knucks" in your trunks than to wield a board with nails. After the stupid thing snapped in half on the slab of beef, they should have just trashed it.
Then, as you were quick to observe Kevin, they gave viewers no reason to care about the Sarita-Taylor brawl. Out-of-the-ring brawls are tough enough to sell, but when you don't care who wins it is really tough. Obviously, the TNA writers missed Basic Story Telling 101.
The remainder of the show made up for the first 20 minutes, although I, too, was disappointed with Matt Morgan jobbing to Pope. Now he has no heat for joining Fortune, for which I thought he was a lock.

Motor City Machine Guns vs Beer Money is the best fued in wrestling today. The Beautiful People were beautiful! I liked Nash pointing out how odd it is that Jarrett is supporting Bischoff (it wouldn't surprise me if that was his ad-lib).
And I am digging the possibilities of the ECW angle, but it MUST have a Paul Heymen payoff or it will fall flat. By starting this angle before Heyman has signed a contract just increased his bargaining leverage ten-fold!

I've heard some people compare this invasion to the Nexus invasion, but I totally disagree. This invasion is more like the 2001 Alliance invasion, where guys from another company come in and invade and the superstars who used to wrestle for that company join in the invasion. I had barely rememberd that Al Snow worked for TNA, but I was kind of in shock when I saw D-Lo Brown come out. Someone help me out in this one, but I thought he worked for Ring of Honor. I might be the only one, but I would like to see if Simon Diamond has one last match left in him. I remember watching him wrestle years ago in TNA with his tag team Diamonds in the Rough. Just hope they don't make a tag match of D'lo and Terry Taylor vs. Al Snow and Simon Diamond at the next PPV

The happiest person in all of this must be Vince McMahon. After burying the 'ECW' brand over the better part of the last 10 years, I think Dixie isn't looking at the big picture here. ECW is dead. Long since dead. Vinny Mac made sure of that when he displayed his version of ECWWE. Even though TNA is attempting to go back to the original ECW days, the brand is so devalued now, that it's not worth all the hype. Throw that in with putting your ball in the hands of Tommy Dreamer. Correction - a pushing 40 Tommy Dreamer. And I'm not exactly doing jumping jacks over Stevie Richards and Rhyno either. This angle is becoming embarrassing before it really begins. Complete bust written all over it.

Unless they get Heyman.

The first problem is if Carter invited them then it's not an invasion. Second, why didn't she say so to begin with? Why wait to a fight broke out, then let them go at it for a few minutes? Or a when they first started show up in TNA? Other than RVD there isn't really much good former ECW talent left in wrestling. Most of them have been irrelevant for a while now. Even if they brought in Lance Storm, Jerry Lynn, Saturn, Justin Incredible and a few others who had real wrestling talent instead of these glorified stunt men whos best talent is bleeding or being put through a flaming table like Dreamer, Sandman, Sabu and many others, this storyline would still stink. The WWE did an ECW invasion storyline in the 90's. Anyone remember the RAW from Hammerstein Ballroom? Then there was the ECW/WCW invasion in 2001. Now they're also talking about an One Night Stand type of PPV in TNA. Who ever came up with this idea should be ashamed. I know that recycling wrestling storyline from other promotions is done all the time but this is rediculous. By the way Miss Tessmacher, wasn't that the name of Lex Luthor assistant in the original Superman movies? If so, once again very sad.

"Nothing against Kazarian, because I think he is really talented, but it amazes me that TNA sees more in him than it does in Desmond Wolfe, who was blown off by Flair."

You and me both. He had been positioned to be a really strong heel after his great feud with Kurt Angle, but this "new regime" has killed him dead. That might be my biggest complaint of the Hogan/Bischoff era.

Let's just hope Dixie doesn't feel a need to be a full-time onscreen character, she's just awful.

Say what you like about the TNA product, but time and again they manage to produce the best match of the week, this time it was MCMG vs. Beer Money.

It's a shame that the writing and storyline development is sketchy at best because TNA have some extraordinarily talented workers who continue putting on superb matches each week.

The Sarita/Taylor Wilde match was intense and it was good to see them get some real screen time but not only was it weird given they've not been seen in so long but it was also so unrealistic.
I know we have to suspend belief but it's going a bit far when we're to believe that these two, petite, if tough, women can brutalise each other like that yet get up and fight on seconds later, and do it all again and again.

As for the brawl at the end, i couldn't tell if the chaos was totally deliberate but either way i think it worked given that the aim was obviously to suggest that anarchy reigns when these ECW guys arrive.

The Dixie teaser at the end was a nice touch.

The combined time of his jobs to Neidhart and Tatanka didn't last 4 minutes.

Abyss clearly trying to scare the whole locker room. BUT>>>>> JEFF HARDY OWNS. WIETHER OR NOT HIS CHAMP.ok i think abyss got lucky that Hulk Hogan was his friend before he choked him. BUT THE NEXT no.1 is going to be Jeff Hardy or Kurt Angel. BUT i'm suprised of Aj Styles. His a hipocrite. But WHERE THE HELL IS SUEISIDE////\\\\\\\\\\ HE ROCKED. but BOTTOM LINE IS THAT AFTER THE ATTACK. Hulk Hogan is going to confront Dixie Carter and say wtf were you thinking

Awesome episode of Impact.

You know what else is awesome? My band (The Product) has a song which is going to be the theme song of Final Resolution, the TNA December event. I'm really stoked for that!
