Smackdown: Undertaker put down; Kane steps up

On Smackdown Friday night, WWE answered the question of who was going to take the place of the injured Undertaker in the world heavyweight title match at the Fatal Fourway pay-per-view two weeks from Sunday.

But while that question was answered – it’s Rey Mysterio – another one with greater long-ranging impact was raised. Rather than revealing the true nature of The Undertaker’s injuries – he reportedly suffered a broken orbital bone, a concussion and a broken nose during his match against Mysterio on last week’s Smackdown – WWE devised a story line to explain his absence from television.

A somber Smackdown general manager Teddy Long opened the show by announcing that Kane had found The Undertaker in a “vegetative state,” the result of a brutal attack by an unknown assailant. An emotional Kane vowed to find the responsible party and exact revenge, as he confronted various members of the locker room throughout the show.

I give WWE credit for trying to turn a negative (the injury to a top star) into a positive (a compelling new story line). The biggest beneficiary of the “Who attacked The Undertaker” angle appears to be Kane, who clearly was the star of Friday’s episode.

The show began with druids pushing a casket down the aisle in the dimly lit arena as Gregorian chants played. Kane then came out, revealed that the casket was empty, and delivered what began as a eulogy for his “brother” and ended with a raging threat of vengeance. Even though the subject matter and dialogue was hokey – “The Undertaker no longer walks among us” – Kane gave a fantastic performance here.

I haven’t had a lot of interest in the Kane character for a while, but I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out. If WWE does it right, this could be a hot angle that leads to a money match at the SummerSlam pay-per-view in August. It would rejuvenate Kane as a top-level babyface and put massive heel heat on The Undertaker’s attacker.

My biggest fear is that the “shocking” reveal will be that it was Kane himself who attacked The Undertaker. That would be predictable, boring and a big letdown. For one thing, it’s already been done in WWE – in 2002, Triple H vowed to find the person who attacked his BFF Shawn Michaels and it turned out that it was Triple H – and on top of that, I don’t think we need to see yet another chapter in the on-again, off-gain feud between The Brothers of Destruction.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Long booked a 16-man battle royal to determine who would fill The Undertaker’s spot in the fatal fourway. It came down to the two favorites – Kane and Mysterio. Considering the story line, I was a little surprised that Kane didn’t win. As for Mysterio, his supposed planned vacation appears to have been derailed by The Undertaker’s injuries…

There were two really good singles matches on the show. In one, world heavyweight champion Jack Swagger defeated MVP in a non-title contest. The booking benefited both men, as Swagger picked up a clean victory and MVP got in a lot of offense against the champ. In the other match, Kofi Kingston successfully defended the Intercontinental title against Drew McIntyre. Matt Hardy, who was suspended on last week’s show, sat in the front row, and his distraction caused McIntyre to lose. Hardy also attacked McIntyre after the match. My guess is that McIntyre will demand that Hardy be reinstated so that he can settle the score with him in the ring. …

My favorite wrestler to watch these days – CM Punk – was barely on the show, but he made what little screen time he had count. When Kane barged into his locker room and asked if he had anything to do with the attack on The Undertaker, a cowering Punk began stammering that he was not involved. Then he offered the services of the Straight Edge Society to help find the assailant and aid “a fallen brother.” That was great. …

By the way, did Kane really expect anyone to come out and admit that they were responsible just because he asked the question? …

I know if you’re a wrestling pundit you’re pretty much required to pan every Divas match, especially one involving the likes of Kelly Kelly and Rosa Mendes, but I’m not going to do it. I didn’t think their match was bad at all. In fact, I liked it. They may not be master ring technicians (nor are they trying to be), but WWE Divas such as Kelly Kelly and Rosa are a lot more athletic than many of the “real” women wrestlers that I grew up watching in the ’70s and ’80s. I just don’t understand all the hate. I’d love to see some of the smart-aleck guys on the Internet who make light of these women get in the ring and attempt to do even half of what they do. …

Swagger’s intentionally lame attempt at singing the Oklahoma fight song was pretty funny. I loved the bouncing ball – which had Swagger’s face on it – over the words to the song, which consisted solely of “Boomer Sooner” repeated over and over. …

Todd Grisham said: “Some may say that Swagger got himself intentionally disqualified [against The Big Show at the Over the Limit pay-per-view].” Some may say? Swagger walked out of the ring, grabbed the championship belt, got back in the ring and nailed Big Show with it right in front of the referee. Who wouldn’t say? …

Before Long addressed how The Undertaker’s absence would affect the fatal fourway, Matt Striker wondered if the match might end up becoming a triple threat. Keep in mind that the name of the pay-per-view is Fatal Fourway. And this guy was a teacher? …

Striker did redeem himself, however, by dropping in a reference to Neil Peart, the brilliant lyricist and drummer of Rush.

Great promo by Kane, it's good to see his character get a boost. I thought he was going to hit a spinarooni when he dropped to one knee and looked at his palm.

Kevin you're such a Rush mark! sorry had to say it! love that band though as well...saw them live in Raleigh in 2006.

BTW if Kane was so involved in the main storyline why couldn't he be in the main event at fatal fourway? Mysterio does want to take time off and the crowd response to Kane was big and he performed really well throughout the night. I liked the tension between him and Big Show as well, good stuff!

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm sure WWE booked it that way for a reason. We'll see.

You caught the Neal Peart reference too. Amazing how many people wouldn't get it though. BTW I'm sitting 5th row when they come to Jiffy Lube Live on Sept.18th. Cant wait

Kane was awesome. His scene with Punk was one of the best of the nights!

I feel you on the Kelly/Rosa match, it wasn't horrible. I never ever run down the women's matches because they do what they can with the time they are given. And they're not always bad at all, some people just condition themselves to say they're matches suck even when they don't.

Another Striker goof: During the Swagger-MVP match, he was talking about Swagger's OU football background and mentioned the Heisman Trophy winners the school has had, including Billy Sims, who won two (?). Um, Matt that was Archie Griffin who won two Heismans, and he went to Ohio State.

RESPONSE FROM KE: That one went right past me, but you are obviously right.

so you think the undertaker wil be back you dont think theres a chance he might be dead and how do you get your info

Hey Kevin, did you notice that not all the Smackdown wrestlers were in the Battle Royal? Cody Rhodes and Shad were missing. Very Strange.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I did notice Shad. Cody I actually forgot about.

Wow! Rey Mysterio as the fourth star of the Fatal Fourway? That's so new, unexpected and refreshingly innovatizzzzzzz....

Kevin, As for you comments at the end about Matt Striker and his being a former teacher......I would like to add that during the Swagger vs MVP match Striker complimented Swagger for "... going after an appendage of MVP in particular the knee..."
Okay I admit that I haven't been in school for quite a few years but a knee is a joint not an appendage right? Part of an appendage yes but not an appendage by itself.
Nir picking I know but the little things mean something also.

I just don't buy that a fat 40 year old who's career peaked over 10 years ago, and who last weak jobbed to a guy about 100lbs lighter, is scary enough.

I know it's Kane, but if wrestling was real, and I were CM Punk, I would have laughed in his face.

I thought the empty casket was a bit stupid

So Kane tried to kill his brother twice, and now he's sad that he's brother is dead...oh, I'm sorry, the Undertaker doesn't die. He's sad that his brother is in a "vegatative state." As much as I love the Undertaker as a wrestler, I love the Undertaker gimmick less. It was cool in 1994 when he was floating out of caskets because WWE was still a family oriented show. It's trying to be family oriented today but we're in the post-Attitude WWE, which means that the characters and stories are a lot more real and more of the business has been exposed right on WWE programming. I wish they would do some segment where Undertaker addresses the fact that he's not superhuman but he can't stop being the Deadman either because it is a part of who he is as a person. I'm just getting tired of all the spooky stuff.

is the undertaker coming back

I was at that show. Swagger got massive heel heat that night: between wearing an OU football jersey and singing the OU fight song, the Texas crowd was just about ready to rip him apart.

"I’d love to see some of the smart-aleck guys on the Internet who make light of these women get in the ring and attempt to do even half of what they do. …"

Their match wasn't AWFUL, but it wasn't great. And it's eerie that you said that, because at one point when one of the girls (I forget which) partially botched a move (it might have been a monkey flip), I thought to myself that I'd probably botch it even worse.

Having said that, I'm not a trained wrestler, and I expect trained wrestlers to be able to do wrestling moves well, be they male or be they female. I'm pretty sure that you've talked about how unimpressive David Otunga is in the ring, Kev; if somebody who liked Otunga were to say "I'd like to see you try to do half of what Otunga does," or "I'd like to see you try to do half of what Khali does," what would your response be? I've been critical of Otunga's in-ring skill myself, so I'll tell you what my response would be. "No, I can't wrestle as well as David Otunga. But two things. First, I haven't trained for it, so even though I would suck, I would have an excuse. He HAS trained for it. What's his excuse? Second, it's not my job to wrestle well in a ring in front of thousands of fans, so I don't need to be able to do it well. It IS Otunga's job, so he ought to be able to do it well. If he can't, he should find another line of work." Likewise, the Divas ought to be able to wrestle well. They should be held to the same standard as the male wrestlers.

I don't have any specific complaints about Kelly or Rosa, but Eve is another story. One problem I have with Eve is that she can't do a dropkick to save her life. A dropkick means that you hit your opponent with BOTH FEET. Eve kicks out with one foot while the other just kind of flails around, and as a result it looks weak. Just like Otunga, she has had training. She ought to be able to do this well by now, and for whatever reason she just can't. She should just stop using that move and replace it with somebody that she CAN execute in a way that looks good, possibly something like a superkick. Eve's got legit jiu-jitsu training and she's a blue belt or something, so she must certainly know how to do one of those.

Anyway, enough about the divas. Something I noticed about the battle royal was that there was no sign of Cody Rhodes. That was surprising, and disappointing. I keep hoping he'll get a singles push like DiBiase.

Matt Stryker has shown what is wrong with the education system. Enough said.

Rey Mysterio! You just sent one of the top stars in the company back to the injured list at a time when the company needs all the healthy stars it can get. Bob, tell him what he's won!

You get to take his spot at the main event at the next PPV! Congratulations! Try to not injure anyone else with your knee brace, tho!

Definitely, Kane stepped up on Smackdown! and quite frankly, I immediately remembered the HHH-HBK 2002 angle.

1.You're right that Kane might indeed be the one who 'attacked' his brother. I'd also like to point out the Hardy brothers feud which also began, after quoting that it was Matt who attacked Jeff before No Mercy 2008. WWE creative members actually appreciate these 'storys'. Like you, I am not really hoping a BrotherofD feud, especially if that is going to lead again to Wrestlemania match between these two. And the winner would be....everybody knows the answer.

2. That is something very very unlikely storyline but as it is something you like to joke about since Wrestlemania. So... Shawn Michaels has not accepted his WM defeat and he attacked the Deadman. It's more of a joke but who knows?

Even if very few believed in that story that Taker is in a 'vegetative state', it is sure to be the catalyst to one of the biggest push of 2010. You all mentionned about Cody being absent, so...is he the ONE?
But eventually, this might also finally not be a push up for any young superstar and ends up being the 'heat' factor for the Undertaker match at Wrestlemania 27.

So Mysterio gets rewarded for injuring 2 different WWE suprerstars in the last month, real nice.
I thought the 1st 'rule' was to protect your fellow competitor in the ring. There's been plenty of people who lost their position for not doing that but the shrimp gets rewarded? Foolish

IS UNDERTAKER COMING BACK TO WWE OR NOT?

VICTOR FROM SOUTH AFRICA

I really liked Smackdown this week..great to see Kane get his push back..but shouldn't he have won the battle royal?..Where's Cody?C'mon enuff already with Rey..he cant win because he scheduled to take some time off.I am hoping that it was Wade Barrett who "got" the 'Taker..would make for a nice program between him and Kane and start his push..thanks Kevin and as always God Bless.

Hey Kevin why did swagger lie about starting at Oklahoma when he was second string.
Also is MVP ever going to be a main event star.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Swagger lied because he is a heel and this is wrestling, where just about everything is exaggerated.

I was wondering, why was Finlay in the battle royal? I thought he was too old to wrestle. He faired pretty well and lasted pretty long in it too.

i think the time is right for undertaker to be moved to raw with the other veterans. considering raw's more "variety show" format (still keeping it's roots to "prime time wrestling"), the shorter matches will do him good and raise ratings for the flagship broadcast. besides, the only person for cena to really feud with really is undertaker. better to get that money match in now before it's too late...side note: hoe awesome would it be if cena did it! lol

I for one love women's wrestling, not because of eye candy (but that's part), but because strong women, both physically and mentally, are needed to be seen by young women instead of sex objects like most women portrayed in pop culture.

I think the complaint by people is more about particular Divas that are on the roster for their looks. They get more screen time than the wrestlers with exceptional mat skills. Serena and Natalya need to be in the ring. OK Beth is gone for a while, so others like Gail and Jillian can go. Some of the models-turned-wresters are improving, but my other complaint is that no one cares because the booking for Divas is awful. Set up rivalries, even involve men for more heat. The Beautiful People, er, LayCool should be ruthless instead of comic relief. WWE can have a monopoly on women's wrestling with the Knockouts dismantling by TNA. Just give the fans something to be engaged with.

Gee, no one noticed that Hornswoggle wasn't part of the battle royal.

I adgree with Rob brown, if your trained and paid to do something, you should be allowed to bag that person out,

This is a good opportunity to build short-term interest in Kane. Hopefully, WWE will do the right thing and use it to build some heat for one of the younger guys in taking out Taker........please don't let us have another Kane/Taker feud.

Rob -

Just because you've been trained for something and it's your job doesn't mean you're going to be automatically good at it.

who knows who's attack the undertaker,
maybe kane himself or debut superstar.

It just my opinion !!!

Hey Kev,
Smackdown this week was awesome! defintley better than the last couple of weeks.
Great to see Kane to get a push, but was disappointed that he lost the Battle Royal so he could go to the Fatal 4 Way in a couple weeks and win the World Title in honour of whatever happened to Taker....
It was awesome to see Finlay back in the ring after a while and when Teddy Long said "the whole Smackdown Roster was going to compete" where was Cody Rhodes, and Shad Gaspard arent both men suspose to get a push?
and do you think its possible that Shad Gaspard attacked Taker? for his new 'MY TIME' storyline....

Adrian Seminara
btw GO MYSTERIO
and do you think Fin;ay and Hornswoggle should be a team again?

Dave:

That's true, but if you aren't any good then you should expect to be criticized, if not fired. And you don't need to be able to do somebody's job as well as they can, or half as well, to know if they suck at it or not.

i think wrestling is great.i would love to see more evenly matched matches.height and weight size.lets see what they are made of.on nxt do less talking and more matches.

Two thoughts, why not put Hardy in a mask let him wrestle and attack Drew and drive Drew crazy for a while, similar to what Dusty Rhodes (midnight rider) did to the 4 horsemen.

Also the 'attack' should be Punk and company and have it be that "Kane" was brought in by Punk, did the attack but it will be Undertaker facing off against the whole society, with Kane included for a while till brother can pull him away.

When teddy long said the whole roster, wheres Shad,Cody rhodes, tyler reks and hornswoggle btw finlay is semi-retired so if the had him wheres the rest of the roster(listed above)

I'd guess that the attacker of the Undertaker will be Triple H in "payback" for Taker forcing Shawn Michaels into retirement. He'll get the Wrestlemania match that will make the streak 19 straight, then Cena gets to be the victim for 20-0.

Cody Rhodes was not in the Battle Royale... but the SES masked man was at ringside. I'm just sayin...

I think NXT Rookies from Season 1 Attacked Undertaker at the airport

During the end of the Battle Royal when it was Kane, Mysterio, and Gallows I almost thought Gallows would win for a second. And they would set up a split in the SES with both Punk and Gallows fighting it out for the championship. But maybe that was just me!

what about HHH?

I am thinking along the lines of Terrance Williams -- the NXT rookies made the attack. Having 8 of them do it serves to keep Undertaker from looking week.

Have you ever thought his most hated rival did it Shawn Michials

Am I the only person who's really bored with another title match for Rey, someone fresh would have been good.

i like the way you guys are updating us but you know it is very difficult to find the real truth about what happen to Undertaker is he alive of its just a drama part of of it. keep us with all updates here in Africa we can only see the WWE after almost 3 weeks we are behind. so help us get on time.

thanks

I think it was kane hes attempted to kill him twice. he did it because cm punk bbeat him. he wanted 2 win at fatal 4. he was 2 tired of being inside the undertakers shadow as a younger brother kane never liked undertaker thats why hes attempted 2 kill him twice b4 the memorial day weekend. i want to see another bod feud. they have 3 matches in revenge.
1st( Hell in a Cell)
2nd(Inferno Match)
3rd(Casket Match)
i bet during summerslam 2010 kanes gona get mysterio on ground and then we hear the dong and distract kane then rey does a rollup Rey Mysterio gets his World Heavyweight Championship back. then the following Smackdown! undertaker tells every1 that kane attacked him. then he vows vengeance. then teddy long announces theyll have 3 matches at the following 3 ppvs then we see another kick-a** bod feud

Im still waiting for the Undertaker to come back, im already missing his style of destruction, '' tombstone''.
