Nexus slays ‘The Dragon’ on Raw
When the Raw writers were putting together Monday night’s show, I’m guessing the conversation went something like this:
“We need The Nexus [the new name for the NXT Season 1 gang] to lay out someone new this week.”
“Yeah, and we also need to have a segment promoting the new Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat DVD.”
“Bingo!”
Just as he had done throughout his Hall of Fame career, the 57-year-old Steamboat took a heck of a beating on the show to get heel heat on his adversaries.
It had been announced early on Raw that the Nexus guys would be terminated if they attacked a WWE wrestler, and the WWE wrestlers would be suspended if they initiated physical contact with The Nexus.
So when Jerry Lawler brought out Steamboat, Arn Anderson, Michael Hayes, Mike Rotunda and Dean Malenko to the ring to celebrate the release of the Steamboat DVD, it was pretty obvious that it wasn’t going to end well for the old-timers.
Sure enough, out came The Nexus (sans Wade Barrett – more on that later). The six upstarts circled their prey and methodically picked off the former stars one by one until Steamboat was left by himself.
Steamboat found himself on the receiving end of David Otunga’s slam, Skip Sheffield’s clothesline and Justin Gabriel’s 450 Splash, and then was taken from the ring on a stretcher and wearing a neck brace.
The angle got a lot of heat and really made The Nexus look like a bunch of disrespectful punks (and I mean that as a compliment).
The one flaw with the angle was that not one person in the WWE locker room came out to try and stop the attack. Even though Michael Cole and Josh Matthews (who sat in for Lawler after “The King” was laid out) stressed in commentary that the wrestlers would have been suspended if they had intervened, it still makes the babyfaces look bad for letting the threat of a suspension prevent them from saving a group of respected former stars from a severe beat-down.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
Conspicuous by his absence was Barrett. It was explained at the beginning of the show that the anonymous Raw general manager was allowing Barrett to tell The Nexus’ side of the story in regard to the attack on Vince McMahon last week, and that Barrett was in a meeting at WWE headquarters doing exactly that. According to a report on pwinsider.com, the real reason that Barrett wasn’t there is because his work visa has expired. The same report also stated that Drew McIntyre’s work visa has expired as well, so the story line explanation for his departure from Smackdown is actually a shoot. It’s unclear how long it will be until they can to return to WWE, but Barrett and McIntyre apparently are in England and Scotland, respectively, attempting to resolve the issues. Losing Barrett for a significant amount of time obviously would be a huge blow for The Nexus angle, which already took a hit when Daniel Bryan was fired. …
The eight participants in Raw’s Money in the Bank ladder match at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view on July 18 were announced: Evan Bourne, Ted DiBiase Jr., Edge, Chris Jericho, The Miz, John Morrison, Randy Orton and R-Truth. It also was announced that Sheamus would defend the WWE title against John Cena in a steel cage on that show. …
The eight-man tag team match involving the MITB competitors (the four heels versus the four babyfaces) was fun, and it gave the mid-card guys a chance to be in a main event with the top stars. The 15-minute match built to Orton getting the hot tag. He entered the ring, ducked a clothesline from DiBiase and then hit the RKO on him. Match over. …
I’m enjoying the gimmick of Cole reading the anonymous GM’s e-mail messages. Having Cole repeatedly stepping away from the announce table and onto a podium to read from a laptop was so corny that it was entertaining – at least to me. ...
I was disappointed that guest host Rob Zombie didn’t do more than just read off the names of the MITB participants and engage in a very brief verbal exchange with Edge that went nowhere. Being a Zombie fan, I was hoping for more interaction between him and the talent. …
I’ve never been a Cena basher, but I have to admit that he was incredibly annoying trying to be cute in the opening segment. …
It was interesting that when Anderson was talking about Steamboat being among the five greatest wrestlers of all time, the other names he mentioned were Triple H, The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. The crowd then began chanting “woooo!” …
The segment with the former stars coming out to pay tribute to Steamboat came off a little contrived since the only one who really had any kind of history at all with Steamboat was Anderson. Hayes, Rotunda and Malenko were only there because they – like Steamboat – are backstage producers. …
The angle with Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but the interaction between them is amusing nonetheless. Kozlov and William Regal seem to be allies and enemies on alternating weeks. …
I liked Alicia Fox’s aggressiveness during the women’s tag match in which she and Maryse defeated Eve Torres and Gail Kim. I also liked that Fox and Maryse didn’t automatically get along as partners just because they’re both heels. …
It appears that Ranjin Singh is going to turn heel on his “brother” The Great Khali. I can’t imagine that there is one person anywhere who will care about this.

Comments
I dunno a Singh/Khali feud would be useful in cutting wrestiling to about 10 mins for the entire show.
And why have another Uso beat down of the Hart's, i think the Dudebusters are more over then the Uso's right now.

Not sure how the work visa thing works but if you know it's going to expire wouldn"t you take steps to get it renewed in a timely fashion? Just sayin'

Kevin, maybe next time you can acknowledge the fact that Sheamus was on the show and believe it or not he is the WWE Champion. Also acknowledge the fact that he has come a long way since his first reign as Champ and Sheamus is now a star. There were a lot of fans who hated the idea of him being pushed so aggressively, including yourself but whether you want to admit it or not he's really clicking as a top heel and last night proved it.

When MC goes up to read the GM announcements he always starts "If I can have your attention for a moment." I get flashbacks of Lance Storm "If I can be serious for one minute."

A small point. Little bit disrespectful to not know that Scotland is and has been part of Great Britain since 1707 and is not a separate entity. It is Scotland and England that are separate country's but are united with Wales to form Great Britain. (Add Northern Ireland and you get the UK)
Keep up the column Kevin, brought me back me back from having no interest in wrestling to an avid watcher and reader of whats going on.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks for alerting me error. Believe it or not I do know that Scotland is part of Great Britain. I meant to change Great Britain to England as I was paraphrasing from the pwinsider report that said:
"In the case of Barrett, he has returned to Great Britain while he awaits a new visa to be cleared. McIntyre has returned to Scotland to begin the same process."

I kind of like Singh's work - It would be interesting to see what he can do without Khali. For example, he would make a good mouthpiece for Nexus - I've always thought that he cuts a good promo.
I was also disappointed that they didn't do more with Rob Zombie. Of all the guest hosts, he REALLY seemed into it, and he had the proper attitude for it.

What is up with Otunga's new haircut? He looks like Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber.
Am I the only one that thinks Fox is dangerous in the ring? It looks like she is legitimately screwing up moves and hurting people by over emphasizing her moves.

Keep up the good work! You keep me caught up on all things "Wrasaling"

I thought it was really hokey and stupid for them to fight to get the empty briefcase that meant nothing at the end of the show. Really? Come on.

BOLOGNA, FUDGE AND MUSTARD!
I hope we never hear those words come out of Cena's mouth again. I feel old...

I think it's about time we throw some compliments Sheamus' way. I thought he was fantastic on the mic (again). He's generating tons of legitimate heel heat (not go away heat like he was before). His work on the stick is really becoming very consistent and it's helping to put him over as a star heel.

Worst Raw I've ever seen. Boring, boring, boring. If I wanted to watch talking for 2 hours and reading e-mails out loud then I'll put on CNN.
Posted by: Joe | June 29, 2010 10:10 PM
Bad camera work when Cole was reading the e-mails. It seemed to me that everything was already written on the screen.
Guest hosting used to be an annoying part of Raw, now they seem almost pointless. They really should've planned more for Rob Zombie, oh well.
What's the point of the Great Khali? His matches are always meaningless. He can't wrestle. Some advice, have him lose clean and put people over, then end his contract. C'mon already.
Posted by: Phillip Reynolds | June 29, 2010 10:16 PM
Mike Rotunda's relevance was neatly summed up by Lawler repeatedly calling him "Mike Rotundo." (Does Lawler really not know the guy's name? Was that just an accent thing? ...?)
And having Michael Hayes shoot that he was only onstage because he hasn't gotten TV time in awhile, then do his strut...ugh.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Rotunda did go by Rotundo at times during his career.

If you hate professional wrestling, you probably loved the first 40 minutes of RAW...because there was no wrestling. None!
Cena and Sheamus, who are developing decent chemistry, had what should have been a five or six minute segment drag on for nearly 15 minutes.
Then the Hart Dynasty match never happened, as they were jumped before they entered the ring (okay, that might generate future heat, but now we are almost 30 minutes into the show and still no wrestling!).
I am glad I'm not the only one who thought the Kozlov/Santino/Regal thing made no sense. I hope I am misreading where they are going with this angle, because when I see Kozlov and Santino dancing and then Kozlov carrying Santino in his arms, I start wondering when Orlando Jordan is going to show up.
The Rob Zombie segment was a waste of his presence. I am already sick of the e-mail GM thing.
The women's tag match was surprisingly good, the Nexus beatdown was decent except that it dragged too long, and the 8-man tag was very enjoyable, although not enough to salvage what was overall a garbage show.
Posted by: LarryB | June 29, 2010 10:56 PM
I know I said that the anonymous GM gimmick would get old quick, but I never thought it would be this quick. Some resolution with it has to happen next week, either with the GM being revealed or stating when he'd be revealed (such as the next PPV). But on that note, how hated is Michael Cole?
The Nexus beatdown was already somewhat predictable, but made even more predictable by their promo earlier in the night. Those beatdown should've occurred first, with the promo explaining it afterward. Regardless, it made the babyfaces look like chumps for not coming out to help, especially Captain Do-Gooder himself John Cena. Nexus couldn't touch him either, all he had to do was come out and lay on top of Steamboat.
Posted by: Joe Barber | June 29, 2010 11:22 PM
I am glad, Kevin, that you caught the fact that not a one babyface "attempted" to even make the save of the Nexus beatdown. For all the talk babyfaces like Cena do - about fighting for the old, sick, weak, disenfrachised, (the usual Superman rhetoric), etc., its odd that all the talent was backstage watching ring veterans being beaten on through the monitors over the threat of a mere suspension.

Nexus will go down in history as a group that shouldnt have formed that disbanded before it could get stable as a stable
Season 2 has a cast that could be compelling as a stable. Season 1 has 3 people (skip, black john cena, beach guy) who should be sent back down to FCW. Then otunga and south african guy are just seeping of charisma.
Only tarver, danielson, and barrett look compelling as characters! I can look at each one of them and go "I see 'it'"
These people generally bore me, and that's not good

the whole nxt thing has gotten to the point that i actually turn it off now hence the drop in ratings

Not good, when by 10:35 EST, there had been only 3 real matches, with a total of about 8 to 9 minutes of in-ring time, consisting of 2 squashes, and a divas tag match before the main event....Also, did anyone else kind of catch or sense Lawler's trepidation leading into the legend beatdown segment? Pretty much saw what was coming. You have to laugh, that in a PG rated WWE, that tie-choking equals bad, but when you really need to get s@#! done, gang violence is the answer!! Just my 2 cents......

Wrestlecrap.com will have fun with the Nexus angle in a few years.
Posted by: Cliff | June 30, 2010 7:47 AM
Kudos to Joe Barber's previous post- the WWE writers absolutely should have scripted Cena to run out and shield Steamboat's body with his own. By the way, did anyone else feel that Skip Sheffield finally found his character during that beatdown? I never bought his yup-yup simpleton cowboy gimmick, but when he was jacked up screaming "old man" at Steamboat, he really looked more intimidating than all the other wrestlers in the ring combined.
Also Patrick makes an excellent point about work visas. I worked in independent baseball for several years, where so many of the players required visas. The good GM's were always on top of when they were expiring. When a team lost a player due to a visa lapse, it was usually (not always) because the GM dropped the ball. Work visa restrictions became tougher after 9/11 but for WWE to lose two wrestlers in such a short time makes me wonder if it was negligience on their part.

"If you hate professional wrestling, you probably loved the first 40 minutes of RAW...because there was no wrestling. None!"
I agree with LarryB. During the show I was thinking the WWE had turned into the NWA, as in "No Wrestling At All".

What i thought of show it was boring in the middle but the John Cena and Sheamus skit was funny. I think the Nexus skit with the legions was a little weak . the 8 man tag match was great. You know in Atlanta there is going to be a Super Show the Nexus will take on Raw & SmackDown superstars.
Posted by: ryan | June 30, 2010 2:59 PM
LOL @ Mike, I thought it was really hokey and stupid for them to fight to get the empty briefcase that meant nothing at the end of the show. Really? Come on.
Sadly, I watched that segment (the only seg I saw in its entirety) and I didn't think anything of it. Now I feel dumb for not catching its uselessness, but if only the wrestlers involved could read that comment, then I'd bet that they would feel pretty dumb after the segment too *well, except The Miz*.
Posted by: Mr. Sarcasm | June 30, 2010 3:45 PM
I can't stand this Nexus angle anymore. The first week when they all showed up out of the crowd, beat down Cena and destroyed the ringside area as well as many non-wrestlers such as the timekeeper, ring announcer etc. I was legitimately shocked and thought to myself, "Ok. this looks like it might be a decent storyline here." Now 4-5 weeks later, I keep praying they'll do something different already. First the gang up on Cena, then the attack on Bret Hart next week, the assault at Fatal 4 Way, then Vince. After those I was getting annoyed at the repetitiveness. When they came out to attack Steamboat and the others I at least liked that it looked like a 6 vs 6 fight. But of course what happened? Pick em off 1 at a time then gang up on Ricky. It's gotten to the point where as soon as I see those guys about to beat someone down I hit fast forward on my DVR. Although at this rate I'm just gonna fast forward any time I see them show up. I really hope this is just all in the name of generating a ton of heat for them all to watch them get squashed later on. But still, mix it up already and stop with the damn many vs 1 thing.

Still see that Gail Kim is not getting the chance to prove her worthiness to go after the Diva belt. One of these days WWE will forget how truly talented this TNA alumni is and let her show her stuff. I guess as Gail Kim herself said a year ago "Good things come to those who wait"
Posted by: John | June 30, 2010 7:32 PM
no scott and only people seemed to notice Eve even bfroe she had the belt, but they know there's others that are worse, namely Maryse and Alicia (she's, Alicia, a toss up giving that she isn't a horrible wrestler. Once again, a boring raw with the exception of NXT and that's starting to run its course. Oh and nice touch with Arn having to say that Steamboat's the best, and while I think so, he couldn't but have a look on his face when the crowd started woooooooooing when he said the top 5 best ever comment. (Triple H really?) They think no one will care given that alot of people respect Steamboat (esp. the IWC and including me) and how many don't respect Flair at this point so they guess we'll overlook that statement. Too petty and sad on the Vince and the writers part...

some thing that the WWE missed in the dragon beat down segment, the fact that wwe.com has jerry lawler listed amongst its Raw "superstars". by that logic nexus attacking lawler should have gotten them all fired.
Posted by: tom | June 30, 2010 10:08 PM
Hey K.E the SuperShow in Atlanta is going to have a mega main event first you have Raw & SmackDown superstars vs Nexus 2nd main even wil have triple threat match with Jack Swagger, Rey Rey, and Big Show . Your thoughts!

I didnt like the nexus segmant on raw at all, or the rest of raw for that matter. Why would you have a group of half trained wrestlers go to the ring and beat the crap out of HALL OF FAMERS? They didnt even make it look good, I understand the whole point was to get more heal heat on the nexus group, but to have wanna be's knock off five of the greatest of all time with little to no resistance was far fetched. Some one should have taken an ol fashioned AA DDT or something. So disapointed by WWE booking right now. There is so much they could do but they dont with Nexus and other characters it amazes me Vince let the company sink so low
Posted by: Edward | July 1, 2010 4:30 PM
I quite enjoyed the Nexus vs. Hall of Famers segment. By the end of it, I think the audience wanted to cleave all the members of Nexus, and it was also an elegant side-step to the "No fighting with WWE superstars" (except for Jerry Lawler, because the WWE apparently doesn't think that we read their website) restriction created by the anonymous GM.
