Raw: Bret Hart brings more gold to ‘Dynasty’

On the same episode of Raw in which octogenarian and former astronaut Buzz Aldrin moon-walked (as in Michael Jackson’s moon walk) in the ring, Bret Hart won the U.S. title. I don’t know which was more surreal Monday night.

I suppose it proves that anything really can happen in the WWF, er, WWE.

With Hart, 52, as the U.S. champ and The Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith) as the WWE unified tag team champions, the pink and black set hasn’t had this much gold since the early days of the Attitude Era. (I wonder if the recent release of WWE’s “Hart and Soul” DVD has anything to do with it.)

Hart, who hasn’t had a belt around his waist other than the one that holds up his jorts since 2000, defeated The Miz for the title Monday night in a match that predictably was short and loaded with outside interference.

I’m not usually a big fan of putting a belt on non-wrestlers – which “The Hitman” is at this point – because I think it makes the title look like a joke, but at least it wasn’t one of the world titles, and it did make for a feel-good moment.

I’m guessing that Hart relinquishes the title next week on Raw, delivering an emotional promo in which he says that he has lost his smile. Then Shawn Michaels will appear and accuse Hart of being a liar and trying to drop the title without doing a job. Just kidding. I think Hart will give up the title and there will be a tournament to crown a new champion.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hart ends up becoming Raw general manager, as it was announced Monday that Vickie Guerrero was no longer GM and that the position would be filled on next week’s show. Hart doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave WWE, so it makes sense.

Other thoughts on Monday’s commercial-free show:

Chris Jericho was tremendous on the mic during his exchange with Hart in the opening segment. I know we say that a lot about Jericho, but he was especially good here. Hart, by the way, said “WWF” once when he meant “WWE.” Old habits die hard. I thought Aldrin, Monday’s guest host, was going to make the same slip-up later when he said struggled to get out “WW… E.” …

Aldrin was a little out there at times on the mic, but it actually made him more entertaining. Unfortunately, a large segment of the crowd was disrespectful, booing Aldrin and saying “What?” every time he spoke. Show a little class, people. Perhaps it was a bad idea for WWE to have “an American hero” hosting the show in Canada. …

There were two surprise appearances on the show – by The Undertaker and Virgil. Yes, the real Virgil. Last month when Ted DiBiase Jr. began the search for “his Virgil,” I wrote: “Maybe DiBiase can get the real Virgil – unless TNA has already signed him, that is.” I can’t believe WWE actually did bring in “The Million Dollar Man’s” old bodyguard. I don’t think he’ll be around long. I’m predicting that Virgil turns on DiBiase during his match with R-Truth at the Over the Limit pay-per-view Sunday, and that will be the last we see of him. As for The Undertaker, he made a cameo as Randy Orton’s hand-picked opponent for Edge, but the match never took place. Edge had just wrestled a match against Christian, so he bailed on The Undertaker. …

The Edge-Christian match (won by Edge) was good, especially the last couple minutes. …

I like that Edge selected Jack Swagger to be Orton’s opponent. That gives Swagger credibility, as did Michael Cole referring to him as “the real deal.” I’m also pleased that Swagger didn’t get pinned (he lost by disqualification when Edge interfered). …

The John Cena-Sheamus main event didn’t do much for me, mostly because I don’t really care about Sheamus. I was just waiting for the part when Batista would do his inevitable run-in. I did like the post-match angle with Batista trapping Cena in the old Rings of Saturn submission hold. Cena screaming in pain and Batista telling him to quit was a strong image to end the final Raw before the pay-per-view. …

The clip of Aldrin punching the conspiracy theorist who believed the moon landing was staged was classic. That’s how pro wrestlers used to handle things in the old days when fans got in their faces about wrestling being fake. Wait, does that mean that the moon landing really was a hoax? …

I was happy when Layla won the WWE women’s title instead of Michelle McCool last week on Smackdown. My happiness subsided, however, when each member of LayCool showed up on Raw wearing a championship belt. So there’s one title but two people defending it, each with her own belt? I don’t think even TNA has pulled that one. …

Perhaps if The Miz would have selected better henchmen to watch his back than Vladimir Kozlov – who apparently is a heel after all – and William Regal, he would still be U.S. champion. …

After Hart beat The Miz, Cole suddenly turned into the heel announcer that he plays on WWE NXT. He was bad-mouthing Hart and saying that The Miz was ripped off. …

Jerry Lawler said that he never heard a complaint from Virgil when he was Ted DiBiase Sr.’s “manservant.” Really? I thought they ended up feuding, with Virgil even winning the Million Dollar belt. …

Zack Ryder has the best scam going in WWE. First he gets to hang out with Rosa Mendes, and now he’s paired with Alicia Fox. …

The spoof of the Dos Equis beer commercials (the most interesting man in the world) with Santino Marella was pretty funny. …

Jon Lovitz was announced as next week’s guest host. Ugh. Perhaps it really is time to consider ending the guest host format.

I thought The Great Khali car insurance spoof was hilarious.

How do you not mention the highlight of the night? The promo Miz cut while walking to the ring was classic, and different. That he can entertain like that is AWESOME.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I agree it was good, but it's not the first time that he has done it.

Thanks for all your hard work. Hopefully we can push you to #1 at the Sun!!

Readers: Please complete the sentence - I attended my first live wrestling event in . . . (fill in the date, city, main event, highlights, whatever).

Just wondering what type of cross section of readers we have if you'll allow. Thanks Kevin.

I've knocked TNA for doing what WWE did with having Hart win the US Title so I'll just say no matter what happens there its a bad move.

Also it was an ok show, but I was sold the second Virgil came out.

Kev, I love your shout for Hart as the new GM, that would be quality. Speaking of quality, I think we have just seen the best divas match in god knows how long. Layla was awesome I felt.... but then again I am English myself, so there's a slim chance I may be blinkered. I'm surprised that you gave so little attention to the Edge and Christian match, I felt that was a cracking match to watch. WWE do seem to be teasing us bit by bit with those two, who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and this will be a slow and very long build up to a feud at WM 27. anyway, good stuff as always Kev, and congrats on the 3 years of Ring Posts so far.
p.s. that wwf slip by hart was censored here in the UK despite us getting Raw 'live', i thought that was quite funny.

Thank goodness for the Edge and Christian match. The WWE is sometimes oblivious. This is a money feud. I realize that the crowd was hot because they were both from Toronto, but even the confrontation on Smackdown, a few weeks ago, had the crowd hot. You could show the old E & C promos from years ago for the kiddies who werent around then. Of course that was so much better than any "funny" promos we get now it would make the E look bad..Jericho and Hart had a good exchange. A U.S. Title tournament could be good, if they just let us have it..Orton and Swagger was decent..Cena and Sheamus swung and missed..Im pulling for J.R. as general manager. Any chance?

Nice job pointing out the "Rings of Saturn" hold Bats put John Cena in. Perry Saturn was an old fav of mine, it was nice to see the move again.

Kevin, I have to disagree with you about Bret Hart making the U.S. title "look like a joke." We're in a different era of pro wrestling; unlike the 90s, pro wrestling doesn't even give the pretense of being "real" anymore. Therefore, everyone knows that championship belts are meaningless nowadays. Really, how many more times is Triple H going to win the WWE championship just because he's married to the boss' daughter? If anything, giving the U.S. title to Bret Hart elevates its prestige. This isn't David Arquette we're talking about here, this is BRET "THE HITMAN" HART!

That was the first RAW I've really enjoyed in a long while. Good show all around last night.

That was the first RAW I've really enjoyed in a long while. Good show all around last night.

Could there be an Edge/Cristian feud for the future? After all, Randy Orton did say he didn't know what Cristian was doing out there, since that wasn't who he picked to face Edge. How did Cristian manage to score the match?

The whole Lay-Cool thing was a drag. Michael Cole mentioned they call themselves "Perfectly Flawless." Isn't that repeatedly redundant?

Finally, I have a small story to share about Virgil. I saw him at an autograph signing back in 2006, and we had decided to go over and talk to him, being that we knew him from childhood. After about 5 minutes of talking, we wanted to run away screaming. He had offered us his hotel room number and asked us if we wanted to party with him. Scary.

Hey man, don't talk rubbish about Regal!

Hey, if Bret Hart can win the U.S. title, why can't Virgil regain the Million Dollar title?

Two things.

First, this isn't the first time two wrestlers have held the same belt at the same time. In late December 1999 and into January 2000, Chris Jericho and Chyna simultaneously held the IC belt.

Two, I am sure you noticed Buzz Aldrin's effusive praise for President Obama. Since you did not comment on it let me ask you this question. Was it inappropriate for the setting?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Aldrin's delivery was so unintentionally funny that what he said didn't really register. But could we have done without the reference to the president supporting the space program? Probably. I have more of an issue with partisan comments on a show like this in which one side is insulting the other (and I don't care which side is doing the insulting). In this instance, Aldrin was praising the president for supporting something that he obviously is passionate about. It's not really much different than when Al Sharpton was putting over working with Newt Gingrich on education reform.

It seems to me that the draft doesn't have any more sense with Christian and Jack Swagger being here again, and with Laycool being almost each week in both shows.

I've been saying for months that Bret should be Raw's permanent GM. I sure hope it happens next week.

The Edge/Christian match was really good. It really benefited from not having any commercial breaks to interrupt it and got enough time to really make it ppv quality.

I enjoyed all of the commercial spoofs.

I could see Bret being named the next Raw GM, but I don't think that Bret brings a whole lot to the mic. He's one of the all-time great wrestlers, but he seems to say the same thing each time he is on the mic and it doesn't hold fans' attention........both of which would not make him a very entertaining GM.

On another note, Natalya looked like she was about to panic when Bret missed the rope during his championship celebration. Thankfully, he didn't get hurt.

That was a good episode of Raw overall. Christian vs. Edge, Swagger vs. Orton, Dibiase w/Virgil vs. Tatsu, and the US title situation was entertaining to me. Even the fake commercials were funny.

Hey Bradley. My first live wrestling event was at the first WCW Monday Nitro to take place at the Georgia Dome (I think it was in '98). I don't remember the main event, but I think Sting/Luger vs Hogan/Randy Savage was the dark match. I just remember Sting running out to save Luger, and later they had a match after the show finished against two NWO guys. The show was very fun.

Am I alone in thinking Bret hurt himself when he tried to climb up on the turnbuckle with the "championship." He looked horrendous and disjointed from there on out.

I loved Bret back in the day, but it's time to go.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I wasn't going to say anything about him slipping on the turnbuckle ,because even though I have taken issue with some of his remarks over the years, I really don't want to embarrass the guy. I agree that for his own good he should probably not being doing anything physical in the ring going forward

I thought Cole's heel commentary after Bret Hart won the belt was very strange. Considering all the other ways someone has won a match (duct tape, anyone?), that seemed pretty tame. He actually said "Miz didn't deserve this", didn't he? Considering that Miz chose the opponent and set the no DQ stip, and had three people in to help him, it seems pretty fair. I can only guess that we're going to see the title somehow passed to Bryan Danielson, and this was somehow foreshadowing that. But please, WWE, can we see Bret Hart put Michael Cole in the Sharpshooter? Pretty please?

Kevin

I'm surprised I haven't seen anything regarding the referee saying "five seconds" to Cena and Batista right before Raw went off the air. It was clear as a bell and one of those "curtain pulled way back" moments that really could have been avoided.

Any thoughts?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I heard it, but it happens, especially with mics all over the place.

I enjoyed the Edge & Christian match, but it seemed like the crowd was dead at points.

Also, am I the only one getting annoyed with this obscure "Freebird" rule that seems to be popping up now? The Beautiful People, The Band, and now Simply Flawless. Hall holding a piece of the belt is a slap in the face of TNA fans. LVE as a champion is pretty bad, although the women's tag team championship will probably fade into obscurity anyway. However, McCool and Layla are capable wrestlers, but without them turning on eachother (something I rather not see yet) this puts the title in a weird position.

Also, seeing duplicates of the chapionship belt makes it look cheap and less prestigious.

This show certainly seemed like it should have taken place at least twenty years ago, what with Bret Hart winning a title and the original Virgil making an appearance. Even though it seems like a pretty silly decision to put the U.S title on Hart, it did at least make for a nice feel-good moment, and I agree that they should have him relinquish it, with him saying that maybe he's just not up to defending it every night at his age; thus a tournament will take place, which are usually entertaining.

What with a sizeable portion of the WWE's fan base being under the age of 12, I started to wonder if the crowd would even know who the original Virgil was when he came out to accompany DiBiase to the ring. I really liked his inclusion though, as it brought back memories of the old WWF.

Speaking of the old WWF, it made for an awkward moment when Hart said "WWF" during his promo. Still, these things always have purpose, as they'll no doubt end up in a Botchamania in the near future.

I loved the Edge/Christian match at the top of the show; thought it was really good stuff. By the way, what happened to these two being on-screen brothers? I thought that that's how they were portrayed when they first came to company over ten years ago.

I think it's ridiculous how both McCool and Layla wear separate Women's title belts. It's just daft. WWE should just take the simple route and have Layla be the one and only champion, which I think she rightfully deserves to be, and have McCool eventually get jealous of her friend, thus leading the former friends into a feud with each other, which would then turn Layla face, and all would be right with the world. I've just realised, both those Smackdown girls were appearing on Raw with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. What's up with that?

No place for John Morrison on this week's show - not a good sign.

I actually think Jon Lovitz is pretty funny, so hopefully he'll do a good job next week as guest host.

Hey Eck, do you know why Raw was commercial free? Was there some secret sponsor or something footing the bill? I'm not complaining, I just didn't understand the rationale or the payoff.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I think it's pretty much an incentive to watch, sort of like when radio stations have commercial-free blocks of music.

So are you trying to hint that you think the moon landing was staged?

RESPONSE FROM KE: No, just a joke. Just saying how old-school wrestlers used to punch people out for saying what they do isn't real, just like Aldrin did. And, well, wrestling isn't real., so ...

This was an episode of RAW that I really enjoyed. I do have one quibble and that is with how DiBiase is being scripted.

I think cloning the Million Dollar Man is the wrong way to go. Today's DiBiase is probably more suited to being a face than a heel. So, if he was scripted as resenting and rejecting the Million Dollar lifestyle that he grew up in, and was more in his heart a "Regular Working Guy", then he could distance himself from his Dad's accomplishments and be his own character. However, it would allow him to turn heel every once in a while when he is getting the short end of the stick. You know, falling back into the lifestyle that one grew up on if it is necessary to get some payback. People can accept that. After being a heel for a while, he can redeem himself and go back to being a face. People can accept that also.

BTW. Jericho's mic work was excellent. He was doing enough to carry both himself and help carry The Hitman a bit. I was surprised, however, that Edge was cut so short when he was on the mic.

I'm sorry, but this Bret Hart crap needs to end...NOW.

Dude was the best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be. We all grew up on him!

And now, over a decade since we have last seen him wrestle, he can't even climb up the turnbuckle to celebrate a CHAMPIONSHIP????

Look - it was fun seeing him, but I think the "WWE Universe" knows about how he was barely able to walk from that stroke. It's time for him to get out of the ring because everyone knows he can't do much contractually.

Just go ahead and set up an 8 man tourney for the US Title with Evan Bourne (notice the huge push he's received...and the escort!) and Miz.

Let me compliment you first:
1. Many Congrats for the 3 Yrs of your blog.
2. Your joke of Shawn Michaels appearing made me jumped from my seat before you said you were joking. You cracked it up there.
Now real comments:
1. Edge and Christian match was great. I think the Undertaker angle was put to increase Smackdown ratings about his return. His time-off will perhaps be less longer than last year. It might lead to Taker taken the command of SD back again as top face because despite Big Show's good efforts, it is still awkward to see him as babyface.

2. After I saw Regal and Koslov in Hart-Miz match,I began thinking that with Jericho, Kidd and Smith will be outnumbered. I thought that Bryan Danielson will come in help of the Hart family but it was not convincing to see Natalya smacking a top star like Jericho. As for my childhood hero being the new US champ, I like it very much. I agree that he will resignates the title very soon but for him to be GM, remains to be seen. The US title was having no role in WWE anyway.

3. I think Virgil, unlike you, will remain loyal to Ted temporarily. This new storyline about Ted new money fund will continue only till Brett DiBiase doesn't recover from his injury to form The Multi-Million Dollar Stable.

Hahahaha...Everything has a price in WWF..oops no...WWE!!!

RESPONSE FROM KE: I wasn't going to say anything about him slipping on the turnbuckle ,because even though I have taken issue with some of his remarks over the years, I really don't want to embarrass the guy. I agree that for his own good he should probably not being doing anything physical in the ring going forward.

You did take a shot at the man's jorts. ;)

I've got to give props to Layla, her ring work has improved a ton. She used to be a botch machine but now she moves with confidence. She also likes to yell at her opponents while she's wrestling which I think adds to her character.

1984 - St Louis' Kiel Auditorium (no longer with us) - Main event, Hulk Hogan vs. King Kong Bundy in the steel cage.

To Aaron, I am sure Buzz's praise was tongue in cheek, as he has openly berated Obama for wanting to cut the space program and not pushing it forward. He is well known as anti-Obama, at least on the space program.

In regards to Raw, as soon as Hart accepted the match, it was obvious he would win, which cause me to turn the show off.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I know we're getting off topic, but I thought Aldrin supported Obama's plans for the space program.

I thought Raw was entertaining although predictable. Maybe I've been watching wrestling too long but I just don't get surprised very much these days. Oh well! What's happened to the fantastic John Morrison? The great superstar goes to Raw, his first week match was terrific. his secon was part of a novelty 6 man tag and this week - nothing. This guy could be huge but he seems to constantly be pushed and dropped .

I thought that this was an absolutely fantastic Raw. I thought Jericho was fantastic on the mike, his promo made the whole entire Hart-Miz match plausible. He simply can get any idea by the booking comittee over. He's easily the best talker in wrestling. (I also think Miz,Jarrett and Triple H are fantastic.)

I loved the Edge & Christian match, and Swagger & Orton, and Sheamus & Cena was very good. I know people dont like Sheamus, but once you get past his goofy hair and weird milky white complexion you'll see he works a stiff realistic style, and has an excellent motor. He'll never be Bryan Danielson, but he's already better than Batista, who I like a lot.

I will admit that I fast forwarded the diva segments and the Buzz Aldrin segements, but I've fast forwarded all guest host spots not involving Chris Jericho since the gimmick began, and I've been skipping diva segements for years.

Ps- I loved the ROH video you posted. Its a shame they're not on regular cable, I've seen them twice live in 3 years, and both times they've really impressed.

To Bradley: It was 85' or 86' Pittsburgh CIVIC Arena. Main event Hulk Hogan vs. Big John Studd.

Eck, now you got me thinking about Brett hart being permanent RAW G.M. My guess is he comes out next week after being anounced as the new G.M and says he can't defend the title and be G.M because that would be a conflict of intrest, but he has chosen a worthy successor and hands the title over to Brian Danielson saying he just signed him to the RAW brand. This doesn't do much for Danielson as far as being a legitamite champion (see C.M. Punk cashing in two Money in the Bank breifcases on helpless oppenents) but it would be a step in the right direction.(see again C.M. Punk)

Hey! Jon Lovitz is hilarious!

Curse you, Eck!!

I want more heel Cole! And no man over the age of 23 should be wearing jorts.
