Mr. Anderson is the ‘hole’ show on TNA Impact

After watching Thursday night’s TNA Impact, I’m wondering if the company should change its name from Total Nonstop Action to Total Nonstop Attitude. Or perhaps even more fitting, Total Nonstop A**hole.

In TNA’s latest effort to go as far as possible in the opposite direction of WWE’s PG-rated programming, one of its top stars – Mr. Anderson – is now repeatedly using the word “a**hole” in his promos. On Thursday’s show, he said it 10 times (yes, I counted). Jeff Hardy also said it once, and the crowd chanted it several times. Anderson even refers to his fans as “Anderson’s A**holes.”

The gimmick started at the Sacrifice pay-per-view a couple weeks ago, but obviously it’s not just for pay-per-view anymore.

The use of profanity on Impact doesn’t offend me – I actually think Anderson’s shtick is pretty funny and was the most entertaining part of the show – and, as I have said in the past, I think TNA doing its version of the “Attitude Era” is a sound strategy as far as attracting wrestling fans looking for an edgier product than what WWE is currently putting out.

My only problem with Anderson using colorful language to help him get over is that his transformation from deplorable heel to cool babyface has happened way too fast. But, in TNA’s defense, perhaps the powers that be felt that, in light of Impact’s ratings woes, the trigger on a potential breakout character had to be pulled sooner than later.

Of course, I’m not fully convinced that Anderson’s babyface turn isn’t a ruse to get Hardy to let his guard down. Then when Anderson turns on him, he can say to Hardy: “Well, I did tell you that I was an a**hole, so what did you expect?”

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

With WWE losing several top stars due to retirement, hiatus or injury, the company has to be kicking itself for letting Anderson go. To be fair, however, WWE did have big plans for Anderson, but he did not help his cause by suffering untimely injuries and earning a suspension for violating the Wellness Policy. …

There were two star-studded matchups – Anderson vs. A.J. Styles, and Hardy vs. Desmond Wolfe – on the show. Neither match was anything special, as each one lasted approximately five minutes. Wolfe upset Hardy, and boy did Wolfe need a big win such as that. Hardy wasn’t hurt by losing since Wolf won with the aid of a foreign object. In the other match, Styles defeated Anderson by holding the tights. During the post-match, Styles and Beer Money attacked Anderson, and Hardy made the save. Anderson and Hardy shook hands. Hardy is going to look pretty silly for trusting Anderson if Anderson ends up stabbing him in the back. …

There were a couple quality control issues on the program. Anderson was wearing his wrestling trunks and a T-shirt in the opening segment, but when we saw him speaking to Hulk Hogan backstage later in the show, he was in a suit. That didn’t make sense considering that he had a match coming up. Also, Styles was all huffy backstage saying that he had been looking for Ric Flair all day. The problem was that he and Flair were on stage together two segments earlier. …

There was a hint of dissension between Flair and Styles. It’s too soon for that, but it’s TNA. …

Hogan appeared in just one segment on the show (backstage, not in front of the crowd), and Eric Bischoff wasn’t on at all. At first I thought Bischoff’s absence was because he was selling the knee injury he suffered last week at the hands of Sting, but Styles mentioned early in the show that he had talked to Bischoff backstage. …

Scott Hall continues to make a mockery of the business. During The Band’s three-way match with Team 3D and Ink Inc., Eric Young was the only member of the team to get in the ring, and it was unclear who his partner was because both Hall and Kevin Nash stood on the apron. Hall wore his tag team title belt the entire team and never took off his vest. …

Speaking of treating the business as a joke, Hogan told Anderson that he had heat with “the good guys, the bad guys, the babyfaces and the heels.” Those terms shouldn’t be used within the show. …

When things started to get heated between Brother Ray and Brother Devon, Mike Tenay said that he’s never seen a situation like that with Team 3D. And I think he actually said it was a straight face. …

Matt Morgan was great when he was talking down – both literally and figuratively – to Kurt Angle. I can’t believe the angle with Morgan being a one-man tag team is continuing. Get him in the world title picture, already. …

The Kazarian-Jay Lethal match (won by Kazarian) was nowhere near as good as I expected it to be. Kazarian, by the way, is now a heel and is aligned with Flair. …

I’m begging TNA to stop playing “American Made” for Abyss. It’s so absurd. …

It’s starting to look as if Chelsea is going to turn babyface by befriending Abyss and leaving Wolfe. If the story line does go in that direction, I bet she will ultimately turn on Abyss and go back to Wolfe. …

I’m glad that Roxxi was excited about getting a title shot against TNA Knockouts champion Madison Rayne, but I think she overdid it a bit by saying, “Oh my God!” four times (yes, I counted those, too). …

The segment with Puppet the Psycho Dwarf was beyond awful. First we had to listen to Puppet – who was there to promote a midget wrestling show that will be airing on Spike – on commentary with Tenay and Taz, and then we got to see the little guy (Puppet, not Taz) making out with Lacey Von Erich and rolling around the ring with her. I think at the end of the segment Taz said, “Get a rubber.” Better yet, get the hook. …

It looks as if it’s just a matter of time before Rayne and Velvet Sky kick LVE out of The Beautiful People. That’s going to be tricky because LVE is not much of a worker and she needs to be part of a team to keep from being totally exposed.

Wait a minute -- you have a problem with LVE being totally exposed?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Well, in one sense, yes; in another, certainly not.

I think you are jealous of Puppet.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Guilty as charged. But I wouldn't have liked the segment even if he was making out with Mae Young.

I'm really enjoying TNA. There's always at least one fantastic surreal moment. This week it was the TNA crowd proudly chanting "We're all a**holes!" and last week it was the babyface Abyss kidnapping Chelsea, to presumably rape her, while he does the "You!" Hogan shtick while Hogan's old music is playing.

You're not gonna get that level of weird anywhere else.

I also legitimately like the way they are shooting the backstage stuff. Almost hidden camera, documentary style.

Hey Kev,
Great work as always. I think Anderson is currently as white hot as CM Punk has been of late, who by the way, as of tonight HAS in fact upped the "creepy" factor by what? going masked in place of showing the bald head... Had you even considered that? He does look like a back alley serial rapist now.

For what its worth, I wish Sting were about 5 years younger and working with Jeff Hardy. I myself had a heel turn and missed a few years of wrestling back when Hardy had his first run in TNA, did he work with the Stinger at all then?

Matt Morgan is hilarious. Period. The guy IS a one-man band. How could VKM miss on him? He has great size and build, has it in the ring, and is good on the mic. Was he not as good on the mic back then? (That would also be during my hiatus)

I LOVED the Jay Lethal impression of Naitch and think the black machismo thing was funny, but it is good to see Lethal be able to use his full compliment of moves and show his talents as himself.

WWE is losing me. and it has little to nothing to do with "Anderson's A$$H***S". Its more about the talent and the larger, talented midcard up and down that can ascend to a World Title shot, than few rehashed 6, maybe 8 guys TOPS back and forth (WWE).

Microcosm of it all: Scott Hall spends the weekend in Jail for assaulting a guy, harrassing a female bartender, and resisting arrest whilest drunken. The following Thursday shows up on the ring apron with a tag-title belt grinning ear to ear. Then you have Carlito Colon, a solid worker, mostly a company guy over the years, falls on his back for a living taking bumps and takes pain pills as a result gets the axe on a first offense. That's life in the big city (Stamford, CT).

That Anderson is going to do a turn on Hardy, I have no doubt. It is a least an attempt to build something beyond a 15 min storyline.

The irony I do see is 6 months ago, TNA asked Impact! fans to tone it down as it was a family show.

Anderson A**holes? really?
what a rip off

"Speaking of treating the business as a joke, Hogan told Anderson that he had heat with “the good guys, the bad guys, the babyfaces and the heels.” Those terms shouldn’t be used within the show."

Not to mention redundant.

I think that, after this TNA episode, Russo will come up with the "next big thing" the tag team of Mr. Anderson and RVD. They will be known as "The A**hole F'n Show"

RESPONSE FROM KE: Now that's funny!

Kev, Hall not removing his title belt and vest were good things. No one wants to see whats underneath there!

I just finished watching iMPACT!, and it wasnt terrible. I cant get over what a great talent roster they have, and it boggles my mind that their shows arent better. Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, AJ, RVD, Wolfe, Sting,Beer Money, and Jarrett, the list goes on.

I did like the Hardy & Wolfe match a lot, they have great chemistry together, and AJ and Anderson was fine.

I do think that Flair has to be toned down,he's overshadowing AJ and Kaz, and "The Band" and the Dudleys have to go, along with Abyss and Orlando Jordan. TNA should save some money and release a few of those guys. I was grateful that most of those guys were paired together, so I could fast forward through both segments.

Oh, Big props to Samoa Joe getting noticebly trimmer. He looks 15 pounds lighter.

If this roster was being booked by Micheal Hayes (from Smackdown) or anybody with some patience and understanding of wrestling then this roster could draw some solid ratings and money. Dixie Carter has no idea how much cash she is leaving on the table.

Lastly, is anybody hotter than Lacey Von Erich? She is so gorgeous I was envious of a midget!

Everytime they get close to hitting on all cylinders, TNA screws something up. I've asked you before, Kevin, if Russo has respect in the business, and you said he did, but it seems that anyone who has followed pro wrestling for awhile can see that even a novice writer wouldn't fall into the traps he gets into. Maybe he is just doing what Hogan and/or Bischoff tells him. I don't know, but it is frustrating to watch.
I really believe the talent at their disposal can be nearly as entertaining, if not better, than what WWE is giving us. The problem is, TNA rarely seems to use anyone properly.
How in the world can you take a guy like Mr Anderson, who had truly become one of the top heels in the business with tons of heat, and turn him into a face. Anderson against Styles could have been so much better with Anderson as a heel and Styles as a face. Instead, I thought the match was a dud.
And Abyss as a face has never worked for me. I would cheer if he suddenly turned on Hogan and pummeled him and kicked off the simpleton superhero gimmick.

"I think you are jealous of Puppet.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Guilty as charged. But I wouldn't have liked the segment even if he was making out with Mae Young."

So you're saying Mae Young is hotter than LVE?

RESPONSE FROM KE: No, I'm saying the exact opposite.

I think TNA is trying to build a brand with with the WWE'ers you left, feeling they may have some name recognition to draw viewers. I have my doubts whether this will work or not. TNA really needs Heyman.

I also want to say that I hate the crowds at the iMPACT zone. They are so obnoxious chanting silly dumb things all night, and cheering for the heels. I hope TNA realizes that they arent getting "true" reactions from that crowd, which is full of smartened up fans who want to be part of the show.

I don't understand how TNA can call Hardy's fans the "creatures of the night". Isn't that fans of the Undertaker?? And if you watch the WWE Hardy Boyz DVD you know that he calls his home the Imagi-nation. Wouldn't that be a great name for Hardy's fans?? The Imagi-nation! it writes itself!

RESPONSE FROM KE: I said the same thing about Hardy ripping off The Undertaker. Then again, Kiss did an album called "Creatures of the Night" about seven or eight years before Undertake debuted in WWE.

Its kinda sad that TNA feels they have to resort to profanity to keep their fans. Just what I want my 10 year old doing. Watching his hero Jeff Hardy chanting a$$hole. No wonder we no longer give TNA the time of day.

I agree with everything you say. I did see the discrepency with aj/flair when he said he was looking for him, however, I think the talk between Hogan/Anderson was a flashback sort of. If anything they should have put it at the beginning. I thought that it was great when anderson first said he was an ahole but to harp on it over and over is tasteless. What they need to do with him is pull a "Rock". Rock was a heel and the crowd loved him and he just kept whatever he pulled as a heel and it turned into a face. Thats what they need to do. I totally agree with Nick Rini and Larry B this talent is too good and Russo writes things (approved by Bischoff no less) that blow my mind. They need to cut the band, they are doing whatever it takes to keep these men relevant and no one cares about them while mcmg is getting #1 contender spots taken away from them. I feel like im taking crazy pills. I can write so many better storylines.

Anderson is easily the most entertaining and fresh worker in the business right now.

His mic work is outstanding, his comic timing is second to none, his facial expressions are just brilliant and is actual in-ring work is excellent as well.

I'm glad to see him getting the spotlight, he deserves it, just a shame we never got to see him get such a deserved push in WWE.

TNA has lost some appeal for me by bringing in some of the talent they did. It was refreshing to see NEW faces and talent. Does anyone else see the old WCW? Hogan and Nash can barely walk to the ring anymore. Hall is just Hall, as usual. Dixie Carter didn't need to bring in these people. TNA's roster was great before she hired them. Beer Money, Jay Lethal, AJ Styles and the rest of the original TNA roster were doing a great job before this. And bring back the six sided ring!! That was what made TNA different from WWE. I DO like the addition of Ric Flair, Anderson, Hardy and Shannon Moore(sp?). I have always like Shannon's abilities and Ric should be put with Mike Tenay at the announcers table to see what would happen.
