A bizarre episode of Raw

I know there are a lot of fans who don’t care for the guest host concept on Raw, but I have always liked the idea of Raw being more of an entertainment show, while Smackdown focused more on wrestling. I can appreciate both formats.

Monday night’s episode of Raw, however, was just weird. It was fitting that guest host Flavor Flav, the flamboyant rapper/reality star, was there to promote his Twilight Zone-like TV series, because this show was out there. Singer Meat Loaf set the tone by showing up unannounced in the opening segment and getting an RKO from Randy Orton. WWE also showed a commercial promoting the appearance of next week’s guest host, 80-year-old former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who was in his astronaut suit and was whacked in the back with a chair by Mark Henry.

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear the WWE creative team got into Cheech and Chong’s Lucky Charms while writing this show.

The bizarre nature of the episode went beyond the eclectic group of celebrities, however. Vickie Guerrero was named Raw’s “permanent” general manager at the beginning of the show, and then she resigned at the end of it. She and “ex-husband” Edge, by the way, were friendly with each other even though their “marriage” ended with him cutting a nasty, degrading promo on her.

We also saw a match between The Miz and Tyson Kidd that had a totally illogical stipulation; an eight-on-four tag match featuring the odd team of John Morrison, Goldust, Yoshi Tatsu and Santino Marella; and, to top it all off, Daniel Bryan actually won a match.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, WWE tried to promote its Over the Limit pay-per-view, which is less than two weeks away.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

I’ll admit it: Meat Loaf is a guilty pleasure of mine. I’ve seen Mr. Loaf in concert several times and through a mutual friend actually attended an Orioles game with him at Camden Yards back in the ’90s. But I have to admit his segment with Orton went on too long before getting to the payoff. I don’t think his performance sold too many copies of his new CD either. …

Speaking of segments that overstayed their welcome, I didn’t think Flavor Flav was ever going to stop talking during his in-ring promo. I never need to hear, “Yeah, boyeeeee!” ever again. …

I was quite disappointed that Guerrero’s stint as Raw GM lasted all of one episode. By the way, when Orton was threatening to do physical harm to her at the end of the show, why didn’t she just fire him on the spot instead of resigning? And why did Edge want her to be seated at ringside, anyway? …

John Cena revealed that his match against Batista at Over the Limit will be an I Quit match. I don’t think there’s much mystery as to who is going to win that one. Didn’t Cena already beat Batista by submission at WrestleMania XXVI? Plus, everyone knows that Cena will never quit (not to mention the fact that Batista is reportedly leaving WWE after the match). …

The last person I expected to see make the save for Cena when he was being beaten down by Batista and Sheamus was Henry. It made sense later in the show when Batista brutalized Henry. I think WWE mentioned once in the past that Henry was one of Cena’s closest friends, but that hasn’t been established well enough to resonate. …

I liked the setup of Batista sitting nonchalantly on a chair in the ring before his match against Henry, and then suddenly attacking Henry with it and stretching him to get over the point that he has a submission move in his arsenal. …

Sheamus’ role at Over the Limit still has not been defined. His involvement in the build for the Cena-Batista match has been intrusive. …

I was looking forward to the Miz-Kidd match and was pretty disappointed that it ended in less than a minute with Kidd winning with a roll-up. Unless one of them went into the match with an injury, the quick finish was ridiculous. Even more absurd was the stipulation for the match, which was that if Kidd won, Miz would have to defend the U.S. title against a member of the Hart family on next week’s show. That’s fine, but the fact that Miz got to pick which Hart family member he would face rather than the Harts picking it made no sense at all. I mean, this was Russo-esque. Why does Miz, the loser of the match, get an advantage? If I were him, I would have chosen to face one of the Hart children. Anyway, he selected Bret Hart, which should be interesting, but why couldn’t WWE just have had the winners choose “The Hitman?” Their reason could have been that Bret has been dying to get his hands on Miz since he has treated him so disrespectfully. …

Also too short was the match in which Chris Jericho defeated David Hart Smith to earn Jericho and Miz a shot at WWE unified tag team champions The Hart Dynasty at Over the Limit. It was good for the few minutes that it lasted. …

Who did Morrison tick off that he had to be on a team that included comedy characters Goldust, Tatsu and Marella in the match that pitted the foursome against the eight NXT rookies? Bryan won the match for his team by pinning Marella, but even in victory – which was his first in WWE after going 0-10 – Bryan came off looking like a dork. Not only did he beat a guy who never wins, but the other rookies hoisted him up on their shoulders like he had just won the world title. …

When Ted DiBiase Jr. came out as Edge’s partner against Orton in a handicap match, it was obvious that he was out there to do the job. …

What happened to William Regal when the Colons did a run-in and attacked his opponent, R-Truth? He just seemed to vanish. …

I liked the video package of Eve doing MMA training as well as the taped segment of Maryse training with an MMA instructor in the ring before the show. It was nice to see WWE putting some effort into getting some of the Divas over. …

Speaking of which, the best that WWE can come up with for Gail Kim is to have her sit at ringside looking pretty during Zack Ryder’s matches? She does it very well, don’t get me wrong, but her talent as a wrestler is being wasted.

The reason Vicki didnt fire Randy was because Randy scared it our of her.IMO they made it loook like she was too scared to fire him because of what Randy may do to her if she did, which was why she couldnt get the words out.

And the reason Edge wanrted her ringside was he said in a backstage promo to her hhe wanted her there to see what hed do to Randy in the match.Im sure she was impressed.LOL.

Kev, good write-up, but no comment on Batista taking two steps backward and just jumping on his back after a weak shove from Henry? There's a reason WWE didn't show it again when they were highlighting Henry making the save. I guess Big Dave thought his vacation started a few weeks early.

I think I know exactly why she didn't 'just fire' Randy. He is suppose to be the Bad Guy who attacked the Mcmahons, you fire him he will just attack you anyway.
If wrestling was real and you were in her position, would you fire Rabdy then?

I liked RAW last night. The only thing I did'nt like was crackhead Flavor Flav hosting the show and yapping too much. Other than Flav RAW was good.

Raw was and is unwatchable.
It is like watching the Disney Channel.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I liked the part when randy did the RKO to edge outside the ring that was cool.

That's the second week in a row that Randy's almost killed someone with an RKO. If they are going to have a celebrity or someone else unexperienced take one, they might as well teach them how to take it properly.

No offense Kevin, but at this point I consider RAW to be like a remedial version of Saturday Night Live. You applaud them at this point for just showing up, even if the writing staff of RAW is basically the writing staff from the failed UPN sitcom "Shasta McNasty". (Not true.)

Meatloaf was fine randy orton angled the rko so that meatloaf landed on the soft part of his shoulder plus the rko looked slow and awkward so obviously he was fine

Good stuff. I agree tho..Raw was real bizarre...Very odd show, and Flavor Flav was jus there to say "Yea boy " and compare himself to the black Crypt Keeper. When Meatloaf came out to "talk" with Randy Orton, you knew the dude was gonna get it, especially when Orton pretended interested in hearing him out. The last way to sell CD's is by acting like the male version of Jillian Hall though.

Im surprised they didnt make Cena-Batista a stretcher match, where Sheamus interferes and sends both guys out on them. Cena returns but Batista is in worse shape, giving him the write off and Sheamus his shot at Cena for the title. Anyways, I think its gonna be Sheamus-Edge-Orton-Cena at Fatal 4Way.

I think we all know that if Orton does the RKO next week on Buzz Aldrin, the dude's dead, just like Raw.

I noticed the same thing as George did about Batista flopping after Henry's shove. And how much of a jerk does John Cena look like now? Mark Henry comes down to the ring and saves him, then later absorbs a beating from Batista because of it, and Cena's nowhere to be seen. They could have at least had the Pinheads say something about Cena having left or something like that. But Cena just looks like an ingrate that doesn't watch his friends' backs.

the E must want miz to drop the u.s. title, but he can't drop it to THD while feuding with them, and can't drop it to someone else because he won't be able to get his heat back. hitman makes some sense in that regard, but i can't really see him winning it outright, unless he just vacates it afterward.

WOW no mention of The Colons being paid off by The Million Dollar Baby .. wonder if this will turn into a weekly beat down of RTruth until he does become the next Virgil

Speaking of the US Title, when was the last time Miz actually defended it? Didn't there used to be a "30 day" clause in defending titles? Not that the WWE actually cares about it's own rules though.

Yea, Batista over-sold a move, reminded me of Curt Henning and Adrian Adonis who always over-sold moves in the ring.

I hope somehow, Bret Hart becomes the new GM of Raw. Rumor sites say he is really being back in the spotlight.

A really weird Raw for sure. That was a lousy looking RKO that Orton gave Meat Loaf. Reminded me of the way Vince would react when Stone Cold would hit him with the stunner.

Ken:

Someone (I think either Cole or Lawlor) announced that both Cena and Sheamus were barred from ringside during the Batista-Henry match.

Its time WWE starts getting some of these younger guys with talent over, id really like to see the Miz get into contention with the big boys- he has been legit on the mic..it looks like they may be giving ted a look, but maybe he is just going to be a gimick...and there is no way that Morrison with all his talent should be teaming with santino and golddust

Regal rapping was pretty much the highlight of the show

Great writeup ... lousy comedy show once again ...

Has WWE finally found that Gail Kim works better on RAW sitting down and being an escort? What a bunch of crap ... Evan and Gail ... how sweet. By next week WWE will have forgotten all about that storyline.

Well at least Ms. Kim is no longer jobbing to lesser talents in the ring ... what a pleasant break, and what a total waste of real wrestling talent.

Is her career over ... I'll bet it is.

This was a pretty strange episode of Raw. When it finished, I was left feeling confused more than anything. I was so happy and relieved when it was announced that Vickie Guerrero was going to be the GM of the show. Finally, I thought, the guest host format may be done, with a proper on-screen wrestling character taking control of things. Needless to say, I was very disappointed when she randomly resigned at the end of the show for absolutely no reason after only two hours in the job. It would be great if WWE ever finally puts an end to the guest host format so we could have her back on a proper permanent basis.

Strangely, that wasn't the most confusing thing to come out of the show this week. It's bad enough that the Miz/Kidd match only lasted about 30 seconds, but the stipulation at the end of it was just bizarre. It made no sense whatsoever having the Miz choose which member of the Hart family he would be defending his title against after he lost the match. The announcers even forgot to mention that bit. They kept saying that the Miz would defend the title against a member of the Hart family if he lost the match, but they never even mentioned that he would actually be the one to choose the person. It was so obvious that it was going to be Bret anyway, so they might as well have had Kidd or Smith announce it just to avoid all the confusion.

I think we saw the best and worst of the Divas on this week's show. I liked the little video packages with Eve and Maryse both training MMA style. This showed another side to the girls that we need to see more of on WWE television. However, I think we could do with less of the stuff that we saw Gail Kim and Alicia Fox in. If all WWE can book them to do is sit outside the ring during a match, then they might as well not be there.

Something else totally obvious that came out of this show was the stipulation that Cena chose for his title match against Batista at the pay-per-view. I mean, it's not like he could've picked a Hell in the Cell match, or even just a regular hardcore match, because WWE has specific pay-per-views dedicated to those kind of matches now. So it came as no surprise when he picked the I Quit match, but it still proves to an exciting one nonetheless.

I had no problem with RAW im really not into the cena program with Batista Edge vs Orton is ok but im most eager to see where the Dibiase RTruth story will go I hope Ezeikel Jackson comes back and be the hired help. WWE may have finally realized that The Colons should have never broken up.Looks like Mark Henry should have gotten arrested a long time ago it may not be a huge push but he is interacting with the main guys on a regular now.Santino's face when he got the tag was priceless.

Do you think they keep mentioning Batista as Dave Batista is so the public is more aware of him when he leaves and goes into movies? I finally started to like his character after 4+ years and now hes leaving.

I could see some interesting angles next week with Aldrin as host. Aldrin is a champion of achievement in science and engineering. He could do a nice bit where slacker Carlito comes out and calls him an old has been and then Mr. Never Give Up John Cena comes out and takes out Carlito for Aldrin.

Dude, dead on about Gail Kim. I sent a comment saying the same thing a few weeks ago but it didn't get posted. Perhaps because I use complete sentences and proper grammar structure, it didn't belong up with most of these comments...

RESPONSE FROM KE: I post just about every comment. If I overlooked it it was purely accidental.

But I have to admit his segment with Orton went on too long before getting to the payoff.

I'm kind of surprised that's your only critique of the Meatloaf segment. I know you've often been accused of marking for Shawn Michaels, and I have to admit, I wonder here whether you might be doing the same for Meatloaf. Because in my opinion (and I don't have anything against the guy; his music is okay, I think), that was one of the worst segments I have seen on a wrestling program in a long time. It was every bit as pointless and embarrassing as those "SuperShane" punches from last year.

The guy was raving. He made no sense. And it had nothing to do with wrestling. And then he began singing along with his album...which already had a (corrected and polished) vocal track on it! It was absurd. With Santino instead of Orton, the segment might have been funny—but for Orton, the supposed badas** it was just embarrassing to watch.

When I saw Vickie and Edge reunited, my first thought was "if my employer made it this clear that they have no use for me, and that my best days are behind me, then I'd quit!"

Hopefully, this Edge+Vickie reunion was one night only. They had more heat than any duo in wrestling two years ago, but WWE has done so many reunion/break-up's with them that they have as little credibility as Edge's title reigns nowadays.

Ok Kev,I'll keep this short and sweet...This week's Raw was in a word "WEAK".

Raw was indeed whacked. I did however like the fact, that 8 story lines came into play. The Miz picking Brett made no sense as you mentioned. Why would WWE extend Bretts contract passed Wrestlemania? And if Batista is leaving, why give him a title match to lose on his way out? I agree with the yeeeah buooooyy. but, the clock has got to go!
Buzz Aldrin??? come-on....I'm not sure he ever walked on the moon.

PS. on NXT, did Matt and Daniel Bryan cut a disaster promo of missed cues and lines?

Regal rapping is indeed amazing. Seeing that (and a remix of it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGt6XSpOG6s ) on Youtube has significantly improved my life.

think William Regal is way ahead of Gail Kim in the "criminally underused" category.

You disappoint me, Kev. No mention of the Regal Rap.

It was wicked gangster tripping. Yes, boy.

At least Star Wars Episode III was on Spike this week. It actually gave me something good to flip to when Raw was unwatchable.

The Miz's choice of Bret Hart was certainly not a surprise. However, something tells me, after seeing NXT, a certain someone might get involved in this match. Kev, what do you think?

It's a shame that Batista is (apparently) leaving WWE, because his character hasn't been this good in years. He's totally playing a jerk heel to a tee, and he is big time over in the role. WWE is really going to be short on "big name" stars if he leaves, along with HHH rumored to be taking time off and HBK retiring.

"I have always liked the idea of Raw being more of an entertainment show"

Too bad the entertainment part isn't entertaining.

Actually, now that I think about it, Edge being nice with Vickie makes sense and is in line with his character. He married her because she was in power and got rid of her once she no longer had any. Once she regained her GM status, it only made sense that The Ultimate Opportunist would take advantage of it.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Well, sure, but why would Vickie believe him and want to be his ally after the way he treated her?

Ok is it just me or can anyone else see Buzz allowing Bret to use a substitute in his match, and that sub being Bryan Danielson?? Also I think Tyson may be carrying a slight injury, the way he landed on his wrist last week was just ugly, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't broken. Also the Miz-Kidd match is one we all want to see and for a full match there are some of us who would pay good money to see it.

The rest of the show was ok but you can tell that the writers are in their post wrestlemania slump.

@Elevation, did you watch TNA when it was on opposite, or is Spike TV only getting your viewership now that TNA isn't on Monday night? Because the latter would be hysterical.

---------------------

@Loco, as I recall it was presented as though Edge *GOT* Vickie the role of RAW GM this week, so he didn't buddy-up after she rose to power. Which actually addresses Kevin's concern nicely, because his getting her the role would give her sufficient motivation to be his ally again.

Regardless, we've seen them do this twice already and it didn't click as well the second time as it did on their first run. I hope this was a one-night-only reunion.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Well, sure, but why would Vickie believe him and want to be his ally after the way he treated her?

Because Edge is hot and Vicky is a cow and even if she knows he's using her, she wants to be used by him. Simple Soap Opera logic.

That was the worst episode of Raw ever. I find it embarrassing that any has-been celebrity can come to Raw and promote their latest TV show/CD/Movie/Chocolate bar and the WWE will let them. It's insulting to the "WWE universe". I am sick of having to sit through 10 minutes of a near-unknown rambling on about how great their new TV show is. Or their movie.

If they had a Raw host who wasn't just promoting something then I could handle the Raw concept. But none of them seem to care about wrestling. It's just an advertisement really.

I'm sorry, but if Vickie Guerrero was to become part of Raw each week, I would stop watching it. I don't know what she's holding over Vince McMahon's head that he keeps her employed, but the money should have run out when Eddie died!
