« Notes on TNA Lockdown | Main | Things looking better for stranded Raw crew »

TNA Impact: Rob Van Dam truly is Mr. Monday Night

Rob Van Dam wasn’t the whole show on Monday’s exciting episode of TNA Impact, but he definitely was the star of it.

First, RVD defeated Jeff Hardy in a match to determine which of them would get a TNA world title shot later that night against A.J. Styles, and then RVD defeated Styles to win the championship.

Both of the matches were good and RVD scored clean wins in each. TNA has really put him over strong the past two nights, as he also won two matches at Sunday’s Lockdown pay-per-view. On that card, RVD was a member of the victorious Team Hogan in the Lethal Lockdown main event and he also defeated James Storm.

After Styles retained his title against “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero at Lockdown, I wrote that I agreed with that decision because there was no need to take the belt off of him yet. However, I do like the way things played out Monday night. The result definitely surprised me (in a good way).

On a night in which the cast of MacGruber was featured prominently on Raw and stars such as John Cena, Batista and Randy Orton were stranded in Ireland, TNA used the RVD matches to give channel-flipping viewers compelling reasons to stick with Impact.

TNA wisely started the RVD-Hardy match toward the end of the first hour and had it carry over into the second to ho head to head with the opening of Raw. It will be interesting to see how the competing segments did in the ratings and what percentage (if any) tuned out of Raw to watch the RVD-Styles match. At the very least, I expect Thursday’s replay of Impact do a higher-than-usual number.

With the title change, TNA also planted the idea in viewers’ heads that anything can happen on a given episode, even two top babyfaces wrestling each other and a world title change on the same night.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

I was expecting Hardy – who is a bigger star than RVD – to win the No. 1 contender’s match and challenge Styles, but in retrospect, RVD was the wise choice. It’s for the best to keep the belt off Hardy until his legal issues are resolved. …

The confetti celebration in the ring after RVD’s win was cool, but how did TNA know to have the confetti there, especially since the title match was booked on the fly at the beginning of the show? And why was the confetti red and yellow? …

RVD and Hardy were so chummy after their match that I was starting to think that Hardy was going to turn on him in the title match. It’s good to see that even Vince Russo knows better than to do that. …

If TNA would have held off RVD’s title win until tonight’s Impact taping, his reign would have begun on 4/20. …

The Lethal Lockdown rematch – which saw Abyss, Jeff Jarrett, Samoa Joe and Rob Terry defeat Sting, Desmond Wolfe and Beer Money – was good. Joe scored the winning pin and was put over strong in his unannounced return (yes, he’s getting another restart). However, when Eric Bischoff teased a big surprise as the fourth member of the babyface team, I think it was a bit of a letdown that it turned out to be Joe and not a debuting star. …

Styles got a lot of heel heat from the crowd and he cut a decent promo, but I still believe he would be more effective without doing the “Little Naitch” gimmick. …

It’s so strange seeing Bischoff and Jarrett suddenly on the same side with no explanation. When Abyss said, “I trust Eric Bischoff,” Jarrett was standing right next to him and didn’t bat an eye. …

It was announced that Ric Flair will wrestle Abyss next week with both Hall of Fame rings on the line. Good Lord. …

Taz said, “Abyss is not a Hall of Famer, but maybe he will be one day.” I seriously doubt Vince McMahon will ever induct Abyss. ...

Terry looked bad making the save after Sting, Wolfe and Beer Money jumped Abyss and Jarrett. He had a lot of difficulty getting Wolfe up for a press slam, and then he lost his balance and fell over when delivering a big boot to Sting. …

It looks as if Daffney is a babyface now, although in TNA you can never really be sure. …

I was glad that Shannon Moore turned down Matt Morgan’s offer to be his partner after seeing what Morgan did to Red last week.

i just can't get over the lack of noise from the crowd. small arenas don't give the atmosphere that title changing bouts need

No chance that Flair is getting in that ring next week to wreslte a match, surely just a set up for an angle to get the heel faction that is building some heat after the beatings they have taken the last couple fo weeks? Maybe 30 second in a Styles run to take out Abyss while Flair does something to ref. Could try and take Stlyes out of the title picture, have Wolfe feud with RVD, eventually put the belt on Wolfe and then the Pope could challenge? Would be a good way of putting they two over at maine event statue.

Finally, A Great Episode of IMPACT.....But i noticed that the heel to face ratio is not equal or even close...they have to turn any combination of Jarett,Abyss,Eric Young or Samoa Joe into heels....Do anyone else notice that Sting just isn't cut out to be a heel at all....Steve hasn't been a successful heel even in his brief stint in the Four Horsemen or World Class Championship Wrestling...Anyway Hogan's role in TNA is getting very boring...i say bring in Paul E Dangerously ASAP to give the show some much needed help to compete with Hogan...

I wonder if they had planned this title change, or hotshotted it knowing that Raw would be a weak show. I didn't watch much of the second hour, but I might check out the replay. RVD and Hardy both have terrible music, btw.

I hope TNA takes AJ off tv for a few weeks, then brings him back as a babyface. He can easily say that Flair let him down by worrying more about getting back at Hogan then about helping him retain the world title, and that he tried it Flair's way and it didn't work.

Thought the same thing about Rob Terry. Why are they giving him this push instead of the much more functional Matt Morgan? Terry has a look, I guess, but it's not a good one, and he doesn't bring anything else to the table.

Why are they still trying so hard to get Vince McMahon's vanity hall of fame over?

The confetti celebration in the ring after RVD's win was cool, but how did TNA know to have the confetti there, especially since the title match was booked on the fly at the beginning of the show? And why was the confetti red and yellow?

If you wanted answers instead of poking holes in the booking, then "clearly, the original layout for Impact! was to end with Team Hogan facing Team Flair, but when the impromptu TNA World title match was made, the decision makers obviously held off on the confetti celebrations until after the World title match.

Besides, having AJ and RVD wrestle in a ring full of confetti could be deemed as an unsafe working environment. Once again, TNA made the right call! And luckily, RVD won the title so the confetti could still be used."

The real question is how could RVD wrestle two matches at Lockdown and two matches on Impact! and still beat the champion clean? I've heard of a hot streak, but c'mon, AJ Styles should have bailed out of the ring and ran away if RVD were that unstoppable.

Impact was much better then Raw. It actually had PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING. That seems to be a dirty word in 2010 at least to WWE. I fast forwarded through Raw in 5 minutes. The SNL skit were horrible and having Koslov and Khali in the same ring is mind blowing. Huge win for TNA and great use of RVD. Now if only Jim Ross would come aboard...

Am I the only non-channel flipper out there? This is a perfect example of when I would rather watch TNA, but it completely slipped my mind that that was even an option.

I think I'm the kind of fan that TNA wants to attract - I'm a wrestling fan, not a "member of the WWE sports entertainment universe." But after twenty years it's a force of habit to turn to USA at nine on Mondays. TNA has yet to establish itself in my in the wrestling public's eye in the way that Raw already is, so (I believe) there are many fans out there like me who just plain forget there's an alternative on at the same time. When WCW took on WWF, they were already an established organization with a loyal following. In short, the switch to Mondays came too soon for TNA.

When AJ won the title to start his reign, there was also confetti. I would buy the kayfabe explanation that they always have it ready just in case. I like it because it makes title changes seem appropriately eventful.

TNA has really looked good over last couple days, with Lockdown and Impact delivering mostly good to great matches. It's hard to complain about a show that delivered on two dream matches (RVD vs. Hardy, RVD vs. Styles) but it feels like TNA needs another show. Guys like Kazarian, Lethal, and Pope have had momentum and fan interest in recent weeks but got little to no time. Kev, do you know what the latest is on the rumored second show for TNA?

It was great they put the belt on RVD. Hopefully Robert Roode feuds with him and takes the belt in a few months. He needs a push too.

Flair would be better served as a JJ Dillon type manager. He could be a real value there.

The RVD/Hardy match was PPV quality. I might be the only one disappointed that RVD was made the champ. The Knockouts match was a mess. I guess the BP are doing the Freebird thing where any two of the three can team up. Do you think ODB oversold her pin? She stayed in the pin position even after the BP left the ring. Samoa Joe as the "surprise" wasn't much of one. Two things I hated - Flair challenging Abyss and Hogan in the ring celebrating. I had flashbacks to the Lightning's Stanley Cup on ice celebration when he tried, no make that begged, for the hockey guys to let him raise the cup for the crowd. Thank goodness they didn't. Brooke was like Kate Smith when the Flyers won their cups, she sang the Anthem for every hom game in teh playoffs. The Lightning are gracious enough to let she and Hulk on the ice and typically, he tried to make it all about him! Dixie in the ring for the celebration was a bit much too.

Ok, so someone tipped me off about this but apparently we are getting the wrong message about the hall of fame rings. The rings are actually from the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame and not actually the WWE Hall of Fame. They are two separate entities.

Ric Flair was inducted into the PWHF in 06 and Hogan in 02. If you look at the ring we see on TV you will see that it matches the ones on the website. www.pwfh.org.

I DVR all of the Impacts. I went back and watched the episode where Hogan gave Abyss the ring. There was actually no mention of the WWE in the ceremony. Apparently, we have all drawn the wrong conclusion. TNA is not using the ring as a connection to WWE.

Fighting in TNA over WWE HALL OF FAME RINGS is one of the stupidest storylines in wrestling history, period. It's like free promotion to Vince's superior and more popular company. Just reflects really bad.

Is it just me, of did the celebration after the RVD win resemble the celebration after the Sting title win over Hogan at Starcade 97?

Kevin, did Rob Terry's slam of Desmond Wolfe look "off" to you? It sure looked like he dropped Wolfe right on his neck. I winced when I saw that. Sting makes as good a heel as Cena would. Sometimes you're just type-cast. AJ is pretty good as a heel, and Flair in the role of a "JJ Dillon" character would have been cool, but I think TNA ruined it by allowing Flair to overshadow the "superstar" that AJ is supposed to be.

TNA always has read and yellow confetti available on Impact. Didn't you know that the Hulkster likes to go out and pose to the crowd for thirty minutes at the end of every iMPACT! while "American Made" and "Real American" play in the background? The confetti falling is practically a nightly occurrence in the Impact Zone. Someone just dropped the ball big time by releasing the red and yellow confetti during RVD's celebration, but the Hulkster is said to have been really cool about it...this time.

Well, that's my guess anyways.

That was a good second hour of impact.

TNA is way solid this week, they are on to something..Raw has the stale GM gimmick..TNA gives us solid wrestling and work from it's STUD'S..For weeks I've watched TNA and dvd'd Raw..now TNA and the last hour of Raw..Great work from RVD,AJ,Hardy,Flair,Sting,Abyss,Moore and Joe.I agree that Big Rob is a work in progess but worth the push.Over all TNA gets a strong "A"...Thanks Kevin and as always GOD BLESS.

Kev i am glad to see that RVD won the Title and you are right where as Hardy is a bigger star right now but until his legal situation is clear it would be vetter to keep the belt off of him. i got a question for you though and this is just going with whatever story line is going i thought that Beer Money was EB henchmen and if that is the case then why are they hanging out with Flair who supposively hates EB i think me and you combined can do better booking than this. And finally madison is the knockouts champion you would atleast think they would put the belt on velvet since she is the leader of the group and probably the best worker of the 3. i don't know I hope vince has enough room on his shelf to stock this library in about a year but as corny as this company is becoming he might just burn the tapes after laughing so hard say they really thiought they can take me on with this crap.

RVD winning the title on 4/20 would have been too perfect!

TNA's biggest problem, aside from the fact that Taz is still employeed as a color commentator, is the sorry excuse for a fan base that enters the Impact Zone every week. I've seen crowds on WWE Superstars more into main events than the TNA crowd was into the RVD/Styles main event. Are Impact Zone regulars so lame that they can't be energetic when two of the three most exciting wrestlers in TNA (the other being Hardy) are going at it for the World TItle? It's too bad RVD and Hardy can't coexist with WWE management and for AJ its too bad his talent is wasted infront of such a pathetic fan base.

Wow, good wrestling on a wrestling show, what a thought! Best TV episode of wrestling in a long time. Good job, now follow it up well this time!

Raw wasn't as boring as usual, thank you Jericho.

Hey Kevin, how come you and everybody are always so quick to find anything to hate Hulk Hogan for? The confetti was orange, yellow, and black. The same colors that Rob was wearing the night he won... Why the hell would the confetti be Hogan's colors? That would make no sense.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I never mentioned Hogan's name. Anyway, the confetti looked red and yellow to me, with a few black ones thrown in. Perhaps the color on my TV needs adjusting and the red was really orange. Or not.

r v d u r so good at yo job
