Kurt Angle-Mr. Anderson ladder match highlights sub-par TNA Impact
Kurt Angle and Mr. Anderson put on a ladder match on Monday’s Impact that would have been pay-per-view quality had it gone a little longer (it was approximately 10 minutes).
As for the rest of the show, well, quality is not the word that immediately comes to mind. Except for a good match between Rob Van Dam and James Storm, there wasn’t a lot to like about this episode.
Angle and Anderson more than held up their end, however. Both men took hard bumps, including one by Angle that could have been tragic. Anderson pushed the ladder over while Angle was on top, and as Angle fell off the ladder, his foot caught the rope and he landed hard on the floor on his neck and back. Amazingly, he got up and finished the match, which Anderson won when he choked out Angle with his warrior medal while Angle was climbing the ladder.
The focus of the show was on the Lockbox Challenge, which was a variation of TNA’s Feast or Fired concept in which wrestlers vie for briefcases with various prizes inside. Only this time the briefcases were called lockboxes because it involved the TNA knockouts (it’s Vince Russo’s idea of humor – think about it).
In this convoluted mess, Tara, Angelina Love, ODB and Hamada faced Velvet Sky, Madison Rayne, Lacey Von Erich and Daffney in an elimination match. Whenever there was a pinfall, the winner and loser had to leave the match, with the winners each getting a lockbox. It ended up with Love getting the TNA Knockouts title, Sky getting an open contract to face anyone she wants, Tara getting her spider back and Daffney being forced to do a striptease.
So Tara lost her title to Love because she picked the wrong briefcase. That has to be the dumbest way for a title to change hands that I have ever seen. How about on next week’s show if we determine the TNA world champion by a flipping a coin?
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
With his victory in the ladder match, Anderson won the key to the cage that he and Angle will fight in at the Lockdown pay-per-view on April 18. I’m not sure why having the key is such a big advantage, but whatever. …
Jeff Jarrett asked Sting to explain why he has “gone over to the dark side,” but Sting remained silent. I don’t know whether TNA is dragging this out to build suspense (it’s not working, by the way) or because the creative team is still trying to figure out why they turned Sting. I’m only half-kidding. I’ve witnessed Russo book himself into a corner when I worked at WCW. …
When Sting attacked Jarrett while Hulk Hogan and Abyss were in the ring, why did Hogan and Abyss just stand there and let it happen? Shouldn’t someone on the creative team or one of the wrestlers involved in the segment have raised that question when it was laid out? …
Ric Flair’s promos are getting more nonsensical by the week. He said, “There’s more history between me and Sting than there is in the entire wrestling world.” Huh? …
The RVD-Storm match and post-match were well done. After RVD got the win, Storm smashed a beer bottle over his head and busted him open. Jeff Hardy then hit the ring and attacked Storm before Robert Roode entered the fray and laid out Hardy. …
After Eric Young hit a big elbow off the top of the cage in a six-man tag on last week’s show in which he, Hardy and RVD defeated The Band, Young did not even make a cameo appearance on Monday’s show. Way to follow up. …
I was enjoying the Team 3D-Motor City Machine Guns match until The Band showed up. Then Chubba began walking down the ramp and – FAST FORWARD. …
“The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero got his win back over Desmond Wolfe, which makes sense since Dinero has a world title match with A.J. Styles on the pay-per-view. What doesn’t make sense is the fact that the match only lasted two minutes. Wolfe should not be jobbing to anyone in two minutes. Remember when this guy was main-eventing pay-per-views with Angle? That seems like a long time ago. …
In response to the news that WWE is banning chair shots to the head, TNA has Homicide bash Rob Terry’s brains in with a chair shot that busted him open. I don’t even know what to say at this point. …
OK, so Terry destroyed X Division champion Doug Williams in about a minute recently. Then on this show, Williams beat both members of Generation Me in a gauntlet match without breaking a sweat. Well, now I know as a viewer that I don’t need to care at all about Generation Me. …
It was nice to see ODB back on TV for the first time in I don’t know how many weeks. I’ve always found her to be one of TNA’s most entertaining characters. …
I’m interested to see where the story line of Matt Morgan holding the tag team title by himself goes. …
What the heck was that with Orlando Jordan?

ok I dont get the lockbox joke....... please explain
oh u must of missed the band telling everyone how they are running tna now.... next week russlos debuting as the power roade behind the band and thier going to use the feevird rule to take the titles and such

Bubba has no personality on the camera and since the crowd hates him so much, I have a feeling he'll be around for a long time with the heel Nash group. WIthout Bubba in that group, they may be cheered like the NWO.
I couldn't believe that chair shot to the head. I noticed even Hogan took one back a few weeks ago without blocking. Doesn't make sense.

Vinny Ru is so down with the kids since he discovered the delights (or lack thereof|)of the whole Lady Gaga crap and of course thought it would make for a great wrestling character. 'That should put bums on seats'. Watch the Imapct ratings and PPV buyrates soar. At least before Hogan and Bischoff we had Desmond Wolfe and Chris Daniels given a chance to shine. I have officially given up on TNA, i despair really - Rock and Stone cold could headline the next PPV asnd it would still bomb! Dixie should sit down with her 'creative' and make them watch the main events of WM26 and RAW - That is wrestling

That was definitely a weird segment with Orlando Jordan doing whatever it is that he was doing, while Rob Terry stares at him with blood dripping down his face from the hellacious chair shot that Homicide gave him
So the big prize in a ladder match that almost killed Kurt Angle was the key to the lavatory from elementary school?
I never thought I'd say this ever, but Lacey ruined my night...once the four winners were determined, I immediately said out loud to myself "Daffney needs to win the dance"...and then she did, and Lacey ruined it...I liked Daffney's "little person hat" as Tazz called it...at least Russo and associates got it right giving Daffney a push, however long it lasts

TNA is so boring anymore. I mean this is a bad copy of WCW.

I agree Kev, been trying to give Impact a chance to show me something. That didn't happen this week. Seemed abit of a cluster...... No follow up on EY from last week much less lets take a week to talk about Morgan and Hernandez. I could care less about Moore, Jordan and that fat guy who shall go unnamed.
The whole Team Flair-Team Hogan deal started out good, then had me scratching me head going WTH? Thankfully Angle/Anderson and Storm/RVD made me feel less guilty about wasting 2 hours of my time. Watching that show is like trying to follow this comment. Almost impossible.

I feel sorry for you that you actually have to sit down and watch this crappy show just to write a blog for us.

"So Tara lost her title to Love because she picked the wrong briefcase. That has to be the dumbest way for a title to change hands that I have ever seen. How about on next week’s show if we determine the TNA world champion by a flipping a coin?"
Only if David Arquette flips the coin.

I watched more of TNA then usual this week, what with the earlier start time (and me forgetting 24 was two hours this week), which isn't really a good thing. There are so many little, maddening things on this show that don't come through in the recaps. For example, after Storm busted the beer bottle over RVD, they went to commercial. When they came back, everybody was still in the ring, and the announcers told us that Storm kept trying to get at RVD. Now Storm is finally being backed up the ramp by security... and THEN Jeff Hardy decides to attack? What was he waiting for? Did he decide to apply his ridiculous makeup before going down to help RVD?
I want to like TNA, but it's just a bad, nonsensical show.

I consider myself more of a fan of TNA than WWE because I record both and generally watch TNA first. But I have to say that this last TNA show was pitiful, simply painful to watch.
From week to week it is impossible to figure out who is hacked off at whom and why. This latest mishmash is nearly as mind-numbingly dumb as when Vince Russo put the WCW belt on David Arquette.
What always has been most effective in generating fan interest in wrestling is the slow build. TNA has so much talent to work with. Beer Money, the Machine Guns, the Young Bucks, even the Dudleys are awesome tag-team workers. A.J. Styles is so much fun to watch. As is Samoa Joe. Matt Morgan has amazing potential. Now Jeff Hardy and RVD are in the mix. Give Kurt Angle some time to heal up without taking ridiculous bumps and he, too, is a tremendous asset.
What initially attracted me to TNA was that it was a promotion that actually let wrestlers wrestle matches.
The way that TNA can retain and build an audience is for it to be different than the boring backstage reality show Vince McMahon foists upon the viewers. Let wrestlers who can work wrestle matches against other wrestlers who can work and allow the matches to play out without ridiculous overbooked finishes.
In other words, do exactly opposite of what Vince Russo believes wrestling fans want to see.
TNA cannot lure viewers away from WWE by copying Vinny Mac's formula. It has to be different. In a 2-hour show, have three-quarters wrestling and one-quarter backstage bad acting and at least TNA would have a shot at luring those fans who want to watching wrestling and not "sports entertainment."

The highlight of the Band and Chubba segment was Hall trying to teach Chubba how to do the Wolfpac symbol correctly. Good workers and performers are being buried or released while this group of losers are doing 15 year old schtick.

Rob Terry's three years younger than I am. But between the 'roids and the chair shots, he will probably be dead twenty years before I am.
As for the key, I don't see how having it is an advantage either since I assume Angle could just lay Anderson out and grab the thing.

Looks like it's time for me to stop watching this show and just read the reports here. There was very little I liked about the latest episode and I'm really not caring for some of their personnel choices lately, or most of their angles.

Perhaps this is sacrilege, but to me RVD looks to be a rather poor approximation of his former self -- much slower and less "elastic." Is it just me?
Also, I thought it was hilarious that RVD and Hardy had to manipulate their way past the two spectators coming down the stairway through the crowd. Good thing the boys didn't have the munchies!

While the Lockbox Challenge was stupid, Angelina Love winning the title from it is no more stupid than tag matches where a singles title has changed hands, or a triple threat match. Think about it. In a triple threat match, the champion doesn't have to be pinned to lose the title. So Love pinning Lacey Von Erich to get a key that opened a box to get the title, is just like Tara, Love, and Von Erich having a triple threat and Love pinning Von Erich to win the title.
RESPONSE FROM KE: But al least the champion is actually in those matches. They have a chance to keep their title. Here, the title was lost in a shell game.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 7, 2010 1:29 PM
Geez Kev, just because WWE has banned chair shots (and you agree because it's WWE not TNA) doesn't mean TNA HAS to do the same. I bet you weren't complaining in the 90s when WWE was allowing it. And if TNA did ban them, you would just be saying it's another way they are copying WWE.
RESPONSE FROM KE: You're 100 pct. wrong on that. With all that we now know about concussions, no wrestling promotion on any level should allow them. Why scramble your brain when a chair shot to the back is much safer and accomplishes the same thing?

Am I the only one who thought of Chris Berman when the "Leather and Lace" match was announced?

Hey Kev, not sure if you ever check out Lance Storm's website at www.stormwrestling.com but he has a good commentary regarding this week's Impact and the chairshot to Rob Terry.
Posted by: freezeout | April 7, 2010 1:45 PM
I completely agree that this was mostly a crappy show. I really liked the ladder match, and for a minute I thought I had just saw the end of Kurt Angle. Other than that though, it was pretty lame. The Knockout match made no sense at all.
I saw Dixie Carter Tweet that Impact will be repeated every Thursday now I guess I will start watching Raw again. I had actually only watched Impact since they went to head to head.
After Monday night's Impact I was thinking of switching back anyway after how awful the thing with Orlando Jordan was. Why was he creaming himself? He sucks. He has no personality, and he can't wrestle. Why must we see him?
Overall, I wanted my two hours back.
Posted by: Jeff | April 7, 2010 2:38 PM
Don't mean to be a hater but I thought there were too many pauses at the top of the ladder during the Angle/Anderson match. Granted, I can understand it that one time Angle took that really hard bump but Anderson was slow to respond as well. There was a lot of "OK, I'm at the top of the ladder... now how do I make it look like I can't unhook this damn briefcase without it being too obvious that I'm just killing time here?"

Well, this is a family blog, so I shall direct you to urbandictionary.com. Do a search on the word "box" and you'll find the answer.

TNA excelled WWE in two departments before the Hogan era tag and knockouts now they will have one be the tag champ by himself (even though "We" bit was just hilarious) for a few months in the expense of a entire division and the knockouts thing was just so Russo. That was the last time I watch that sh*t again, just like many others and I am sure the 0.9 will back down again.

Thanks freezeout for pointing out Lance Storm's latest commentary. I really found it powerful and also recommend it.
http://www.stormwrestling.com/040610.html
I have not watched TNA in weeks, so I don't have much to say except that Daffney getting a push is like the opposite of "collateral damage"... a positive outcome accidental to a major trainwreck

Five keys on this particular episode! If only Russo had applied himself he could have found a way to put those keys on poles.
The Lockbox Challenge made even less sense than you gave it credit for. Think about this: TNA management apparently recovered Tara's property, moreso her pet spider. Do they return her property to her? Of course not. She has to enter this stupid competition where she has a 75% chance of losing her title to get a 25% chance of regaining her pet. So idiotic.
I am in favor of the push for Douglas Williams as a heel champion of technical wrestling, but again Vince Russo proves he has no idea what he is doing. You noted the absolute burial of Generation Me but what about the psychology of the heel being the one who has to overcome the odds to win? This is an atrocious television program.
Actually, one small correction: Jeff Jarrett asked "Steve" why he went over to the dark side. Because here in 2010, using his real name means Jarrett must be shooting! I cannot fathom how Russo has maintained gainful employment as a booker.

Wow, what a step in the wrong direction. Kurt Angle's fall was very scary, I couldn't stand to see that and I hate the fact that TNA put him in that type of match. The lockbox bit was rediculous. I would really like to know who came up with that so I can start a protest to get that person fired. They made Tara seem like such a dope. When JB informed her that she would no longer be champ she just looked out in space like it didn't matter. Come on TNA, you can do better than that !!!!!!!

The chair shot to Rob Terry's head was a nice tribute to Chris Kanyon. You can't tell me that Kanyon's depression had nothing to do with all the head trauma he suffered during his career.
Morons.
TNA does not give a damn at all about the health of their performers. That was especially evidenced by having a ladder match between a guy who has broken his neck a million times and a guy who was fired from the WWE because he can't stay healthy.

Kevin, do you believe the people posting on your blogs are a true reflection of TNA's fans? If they are, how in the world is Dixie Carter ignoring the wishes of her fans and allowing Hogan and Company to run her business into the ground?
I would challenge her to invite you and a half-dozen of your favorite TNA bloggers to replace Hogan and Co. for just a couple of weeks and see if the ratings improve. So many of the posts on this blog make so much more sense than the garbage that the TNA Lack of Creativity Staff is churning out.
How sad is their attempt to push Abyss as a Short Bus Superhero when he could be getting so much more heat as The Biker from Hell?
Pushing Rob Terry ahead of a very talented group of high fliers? You're kidding me? Typical of Hogan. Does he believe WCW's demise was a fluke?
A worthwhile poll question might be if you had a choice tonight of watching (A) Hogan vs Flair or (B) The Motor City Machine Guns vs Generation Me, which would you watch? I'm betting Hogan believes the majority of us will chose A.

I liked last week's show. This week was one of the worst they've ever done. Sure, there was the awesome ladder match (with a great finish) and no Eric Bischoff, but everything felt really random and thrown onto the show with no rhyme or reason. And having the women unlocking the boxes as a final promo of the show? Just terrible idea, it was a horrific segment and is going to attract 0 new viewers to the product.

I figured out who kidnapped Samoa Joe... Tomko and him are in fat camp.

I can't believe at this point some people, much less the 2nd largest wrestling promotion in the world still don't 'Get It' regarding open chair shots.
The banning of all blood may be excessive, but open chair shots to the head = concussions!!! If the horrors of the Benoit tragedy have any shreds of silver lining to cling to it's that it should have educated people that it should never be allowed to happen again via negligent, irresponsible decision making by bookers and wrestlers.
How many more have to die before this sinks in? That chair shot was hard to watch. Hope it was worth it Rob, cause you still aint over!
(P.S Kev Lance Storm has a blog up talking about this incident, says it all. If you havent already check it out.)

Some problems:
TNA could really be very good, but it isn't.
Kurt Angle shouldn't be taking those kind of bumps, but he is.
Scott Hall, has no place in a ring, but there he is.
I could go on and on and on and on.
Bischoff and Hogan have ruined what was a very promising promotion, especially after Bound For Glory. Shame on them, their ego's and their bumchums.
Posted by: theorangechimp | April 11, 2010 4:31 AM
I don't know what's worse, them handing over the women's title in a crapshoot or promising and then not delivering on a scantily clad Daffney.
Both terribly disappointing.
