Jack Swagger loses again on Smackdown

OK, now it’s become ridiculous.

World heavyweight champion Jack Swagger lost clean yet again, this time to John Morrison on Friday night’s Smackdown. Unlike Swagger’s other recent defeats, I don’t see how anyone can rationalize this one. With all due respect to Morrison, he is not Randy Orton or The Undertaker.

When I saw that Swagger and Morrison were facing each other for the second time in three weeks, I figured it was to give Swagger a win over a quality opponent in a good match heading into Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view. The match certainly delivered, but, unfortunately, it ended with Swagger doing a job on TV for the fourth time since winning the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI last month.

As I have said before, I have no idea what WWE is trying to accomplish by booking its new world heavyweight champion to look like a mid-carder. If the idea is to make everyone think Swagger will be easy pickings for Orton at Extreme Rules to set up a swerve in which Swagger somehow retains the title, I don’t think it’s going to work. The way I see it is that WWE has not only buried Swagger, but they also have put Orton in a no-win situation. If Orton doesn’t beat Swagger, it makes him look weak; and if he does win the title from Swagger, it just means that he beat a paper champion.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Swagger’s promo in the opening segment was decent. …

It was nice to see CM Punk beat Rey Mysterio for a change, as he scored the winning pinfall during a tag team match pitting Punk and Luke Gallows against Mysterio and Kane. I liked the post-match angle in which Mysterio maneuvered Punk into the barber’s chair outside the ring and prepared to shave more of his hair when Serena put herself between Mysterio and Punk. I’m very curious to see what happens in the Punk-Mysterio match at Extreme Rules. …

So I guess Mysterio and Kane are pals now. I think it should have been mentioned in commentary, at least in passing, that the two have had their issues in the past. …

The verbal and physical exchange between Edge and Chris Jericho (along with Wade Barrett) inside the steel cage was good. This is another match that I’m really looking forward to seeing at the pay-per-view. Jericho escaping from the cage to get away from Edge and then locking the door behind him with Barrett still trapped inside was a nice touch. …

I realize that a lot of people are still lukewarm on Drew McIntyre, but I think he eventually is going to be a money player. WWE did a good job of getting him over as a sadistic heel during the tag match in which he teamed with Dolph Ziggler against Matt Hardy and R-Truth. McIntyre stomped on Hardy’s head on the ring steps, which resulted in the referee eventually stopping the match because Hardy was unable to continue. I liked the angle, although I think the announcers went just a bit overboard about how heinous McIntyre’s actions were. How was what McIntyre did any worse than a lot of things we’ve see over the years, including one guy who attacks people with sledgehammers? …

Simply Flawless’ post-match beatdown on Beth Phoenix after they defeated her and Mickie James was well done, but it got surprisingly little heat. By the way, why was there an ironing board under the ring? …

Layla pinning James to win the match and then tossing James over the top rope like she was nothing was a foreshadowing of James’ fate in WWE. …

The same could be said for Mike Knox in his match with JTG. The underrated big man was pinned in less than two minutes. If I was Knox, I would have demanded by release on the spot after that humiliation. …

I think Shad Gaspard’s new heel character has potential, but I need to see more of him before I form a stronger opinion.

Hey Kev,
quick question here. Was just wondering when was the last time that we saw the Divas using weapons in a match? Because i can honestly say that i have never seen divas in hardcore style matches, and i'm not sure but i think that Phoenix vs. McCool is an extreme rules match tonight. I'm pretty sure the ironing board was a bit of a joke by the creative team, even if it was a little sexist.
p.s. it clearly belonged to your favourite wrestler..... hornswoggle.

Hey Kev!
Swagger...didnt he say 6 months ago, that he would go undefeated for the rest of the year and then lost, almost immediatly? WWE is in transition, and are probably writing new scripts before the draft. I like him as cthampion. Just makes me wonder whats next...alot!And why all the mention week after week of Shawn??
Poor Matt. But come on already. He gets hurt more than anyone right now.
Shad is a joke. They can't get him over, until they bore us with way too many JTG confrontations. Whos gonna stick up for JTG soon?
ill leave the women alone this week!
In closing, why do they use release? is it too close to home that Micki James and Mike Knox got FIRED? And to me, BATISTA-Cena is so back burner, i'm losing interest

Hi Kev. Although you're right about Swagger I still liked John Morrison winning - but that's because I think he's fabulous. Are WWE ever going to give him a proper push? I reckon with the right sort of push he could in time become a kind of Shawn Michaels figure. He's got the moves, he knows he's sexy etc. Seriously I think he deserves better and if he could improve his mic work he could be great. I seem to remember that C M Punk used to be not so wonderful on the mic but all of a sudden he's dynamite. I don't quite understand where Drew McIntyre is going. He seems to be of Scotland's answer to Sheamus. They are both a bit one dimensional and both champions that hardly ever wrestle and rely on cheapshots - McIntyre didn't even get tagged into the match. I was upset that Cryme Tyme broke up.............but only because we will now get twice as many appearances by these two. The Shad Gaspard character may turn out to something but his change of demeanour is a bit too opposite from his old persona, a bit like Festus becoming Luke Gallows. Gallows however has a great look whereas Festus! Also they need to give JTG a new intro as it still has Cryme Tyme stuff - or is he a one man Cryme(Tyme) wave? Lastly is anyone else sick of the sound and the sight of Matt Styker? He seems to be on every show now and Jim Ross he aint. Perhaps he'll get drafted on Monday night - preferably to TNA, ROH, New Japan,in fact anywhere away from WWE.

I have been a fan of Vince's product since '83, but between the G reting material, the fact they stop the match when someone gets a splinter or papercut, and the fact that the booking is AWFUL lately, I never thought I would say this but TNA is looking better by the week!! They are doing exactly what true die-hard fans want right now... something different!
I do not see any of the logic in the way WWE has been booking any of their talent as of late and I am absolutely in agreeance with you over what they are doing with Swagger/Orton. Really, nobody else to put the "World Title" on at the moment? They (Vince and his team of creative-yet-talentless staff) are doing a wonderful job of making me watch their competition.
I CANNOT stand nor stomach Hogan, although he was my favorite as a kid. His personal life has been deeply tarnished my opinion on him and his talent. I just hope he continues to get off the stage and steer those that are deserving into the limelight.
And what's all this crap I keep reading about people are gonna RIOT tonight at the PPV over the firing of Mickie James??? PLEASE... y'all aren't really gonna do that and you know it. It's not that serious and I dont see why people are making such a big deal about it. She hasn't been used properly on TV in years, let alone worth rioting over. Let's get serious... the only wrestling audience ever serious enough to do that was the ECW peeps when Cena lost to RVD... had he won, the chairs would have DEF went flying.

Why is WWE giving sudden pushes to undeserving mid-carders like Sheamus, McIntyre and Swagger when they have guys like John Morrison. At this point they should only let him win a number one contenders match for the World Championship and they have a main-eventer.
Another thing that I don't understand is why are they giving Shad the push and not JTG. JTG was always the one with more personality, better looks and more interesting moves. He could definitely compete for the US and IC title.
WWE's decisions are ridiculous.

I can't understand how i guy like Jomo who give great performance every week is still in the mid card.

Dude hanged around with main event guys like Jericho, Edge, Jeff Hardy and CM Punk and suddenly get booked for jobbing to McIntyre for weeks

Shad does have potential as a heel. But not if they continue to put him in that ill fitting, turqoise blue leisure suit one would wear at the Early Bird Special.

I agree....Sheamus was the same way, except he kept getting DQ'ed as Champion, not getting pinned. Actually, the entire concept of MITB being cashed in when the previous champion just had his a** kicked is lame. RVD was the only one who said when he was cashing it in......it needs to be that way again.....

Ay Lon I think it's because it's "sports" entertainment and wrestlers represent players on teams, and in sports players get released not fired. The Cowboys released Flozell Adams (sadly :() they didn't fire him. I guess it's the same thing.. but that's why the WWE uses release and not fired.

The first thing I said after the Swagger/Morrison match was that's just really bad booking, a World Campion just shouldn't lose as often as Swagger has. The only way it could remotely make sense is if he retains on Sunday and gets drafted to Smackdown for a title program with Morrison. There's lot's wrong with that scenario, not the least of which is what it does to Orton's character which is getting off the charts popularity right now, but it's the best I can see them doing.

"How was what McIntyre did any worse than a lot of things we’ve see over the years, including one guy who attacks people with sledgehammers? …"

So before you were opposing steel chair shoots to the head, and now you're saying you liked an angle in which someone is stomping on someone's head on ring steps. I don't get it. The damage could be the same either way.

RESPONSE FROM KE: The damage is not the same. An unprotected chair shot to the head is exactly that -- unprotected. The kick to the head on the steps is a work.

"How was what McIntyre did any worse than a lot of things we’ve see over the years, including one guy who attacks people with sledgehammers?"

Or one guy who burned his brother's house down and killed his dog.

"They are doing exactly what true die-hard fans want right now... something different! "

Aye different if you didn't watch any WCW way back when.

There's a middle ground between WWE's kiddy friendly PG output and TNA's OTT use of garbage wrestling and past it wrestlers.

TNA was at it's best when the quality wrestling of AJ, Joe, Daniels etc was the main focus of the 'product'.
Rather than 'Look at how much blood we use in our matches where WWE rejects bury our home grown talent.

"In closing, why do they use release? is it too close to home that Micki James and Mike Knox got FIRED?"

Because you can't fire someone when they have a contract. They have to come to an agreement, or have a stipulation in said contract, to be released from it.

jasko...don't you see that the WWE built up Shad the last couple of weeks just to get JTG over at Extreme Rules. JTG will be the one who gets the push.

I was in attendance at Mohegan Sun Arena:

The reason there was little heat on TV during Simply Flawless’ post-match beatdown on Beth Phoenix after they defeated her and Mickie James is because Layla could not find the ironing board under the ring. She spent several minutes searching for it, going back into the ring each time. A cameraman eventually pulled it out from under the ring for her. The crowd was laughing and eventually a chant of "You can't find it" started. This was all edited off of TV, and by the time she finally did bring the ironing board into the ring, the crowd was bored with the entire situation.

Kev, I still hold that the so called work you were referring to is not any less than a worked steel chair shot to the head.

RESPONSE FROM KE: We'll have to agree to disagree. Swinging a chair at someone's head, sometimes with full force isn't a work. It's a real chair on a real human being's head, which is much more dangerous in my opinion than a guy using his foot (which he can hold back on) making what should be light impact on a guy's head. I'm not a worker but I'm pretty sure I could "stomp" on a guy's head and make it look real. However, if I bash that guy in the head and he does not get his hand up to partially block it, he's going to get his brains scrambled. Trust me, I've been backstage at shows and seen the damage an unprotected chair shot can do to someone.
