WrestleMania XXVI preview

Predictions for tonight’s WWE pay-per-view:

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker: The Undertaker extending his undefeated streak at WrestleMania is pretty much a given every year, but WWE has done a tremendous job this time of creating doubt as to who is going to win. The reason for that doubt is the stipulation that Michaels has to retire if he loses. No matter how this turns out, Michaels – “Mr. WrestleMania” – is going to have yet another unforgettable WrestleMania moment to add to his resume. I don’t think that moment will be Michaels putting a blemish on The Undertaker’s 17-0 WrestleMania record. I believe Michaels will lose in another thriller and there will be 70,000 people chanting “Thank you, Shawn” as he makes his way to the back for the final time (maybe). One scenario I’ve thought about and others have suggested is that Triple H will interfere and cost Michaels the match. That way, The Undertaker’s streak would stay intact, Michaels would have a legitimate reason to come out of retirement – to seek revenge on his former best friend – and Triple H would have mega-heat. Triple H making his presence felt in this match also would explain why he is not involved in one of the top matches on the show this year. It all makes sense, but I don’t know if WWE would want to do a screwjob ending for a match this big.

Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon in a No Holds Barred Match: It will be very interesting to see if Hart, 52, and McMahon, 64, can pull this off. If people are expecting a vintage “Hitman” performance, they’re probably going to be disappointed, but the fact that it’s an anything goes match should help cover for whatever physical limitations they have. It’s too bad that WWE has banned blading, because this is a match that could use some color to add to the drama. I will be shocked if this match ends with anything other than McMahon tapping out to The Sharpshooter.

WWE champion Batista vs. John Cena: Batista has been getting the better of Cena in the buildup to this match, so I expect Cena to rise up and take the title. Batista won their first meeting two years ago at SummerSlam, so it seems logical that Cena wins this one, setting up a gimmick match between the two next month at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

World heavyweight champion Chris Jericho vs. Edge: WWE has always seemed to view Jericho as a transitional champion, and Edge coming back early from an injury, winning the Royal Rumble and capturing the title at WrestleMania is a good story. I certainly could see that happening. However, I just have a feeling that Jericho is going to somehow steal a victory.

CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio: The stipulation is that Mysterio has to join Punk’s Straight Edge Society if he loses. The program between these two is just getting started, so I think Punk will win and Mysterio will become a reluctant SES member. This has the potential to be a really good match if they are given enough time.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match (Shelton Benjamin, Evan Bourne, Christian, Matt Hardy, Kane, Kofi Kingston, Drew McIntyre, MVP, Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler): Benjamin, Bourne and Kingston will do some crazy spots, but none of those guys will win. I’d love to see Swagger or Ziggler come out on top, but I don’t see that happening either. Ditto for Kane, Hardy and MVP. So that leaves either Christian or McIntyre. Christian’s work has been top-notch since his return to WWE and he certainly is worthy of a more prominent role, but the word on him has always been that Vince McMahon just doesn’t see him as anything special. Conversely, McIntyre is McMahon’s chosen one, and that is why he will leave the ring with the briefcase.

Sheamus vs. Triple H: It’s no secret that Triple H is a supporter of Sheamus behind the scenes, so does that mean he will put the upstart over on the grand stage? I doubt it. I’m going with Triple H.

Ted DiBiase Jr. vs. Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes: A win by DiBiase or Rhodes would be a huge career boost, but I’m going with the obvious and picking Orton to win. I think DiBiase and Rhodes will work together at first, but their alliance won’t last and Orton will take advantage to secure the victory. There also is a chance we might see some twists and turns in this match – perhaps DiBiase going babyface and Orton going back to full-fledged heel – but I think it makes more sense going forward for Orton to be a babyface with heel traits.

WWE unified tag team champions The Miz and The Big Show vs. John Morrison and R-Truth: The Big Show has been in some high-profile matches at WrestleMania, but his record at the event is 1-8. He’ll get win No. 2 tonight.

Mickie James, Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim, Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres vs. Alicia Fox, Vickie Guerrero, Layla, Maryse, and Michelle McCool: With 10 matches on the card, this one will probably be given just a few minutes. It will be interesting to see what role Guerrero will play. I think the babyfaces will win, with Phoenix making the pin on WWE women’s champion McCool.

i like DX. JOHN CENA. MICKEY JAMES. UNDERTAKER. At last i want to say that i love all sexy divas and my sweatheart shallu.

Christian to win MITB, then cash it in after Edge wins the Heavyweight title?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I've thought about that, too, and it would be great. Unfortunately, I don't think Vince thinks Christian is important enough to do something that big at Mania. I hope I'm wrong about that.

Do you think ShawnTaker II will go on last? I hope so. I imagine no one backstage (Cena, Edge) wants to repeat the same mistake last year when they attempted to follow their match. Plus, not every Wrestlemania has to end with a title match (WM1, WMXI)

Kev, I think Edge winning over Jerhico is about as a sure thing as the Undertaker beating Michaels or Hart beating McMahon. The Royal Rumble winner always wins at Wrestlemania.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I agree it seems obvious. But sometimes Vince likes to change things up a bit when he thinks everyone "knows" what's going to happen. Orton successfully defending the WWE title at WM 24 against Triple H and Cena is a great example. Everyone thought Triple H was winning, but he ended up winning it on the next month's PPV.

My picks: Heel's win 10 person tag. Punk wins, Y2J wins, HHH wins by DQ, Hart wins, Miz and show lose, Cena losses, HBK wins. If/when HBK retires it will be to HHH at Mania in 2011. Although I will say the HHH interfearence is an interesting idea but not on this stage.

Agree with all of your predictions other than the triple threat. I dunno why, but i've got a feeling that this one could well go DiBiase's way tonight. Even though i like rhodes, i think DiBiase has a little something extra, and i think we can expect a big year from him.

As usual some pretty good predictions.
I wish it could Benjamin winning, but i dont see it happening. Maybe McIntyre wins and cashes in against Cena same night.
Rhodes said he is gonna win so i am betting on Orton. I think ziggler has a chamce

Wwe is the best entainting sport in the world.i love with.pls bring it to africa veiws.i love undertaker, tripple h,shaws macho and myserio etc.

The results of this event are so predictable, I don't know why anyone would order it.

WWE TITLE: I saw this match a couple years ago at SummerSlam 2008, so I already know Batista wins.

WORLD TITLE: Edge wins in the last match of the night, so fans will be able to leave before the event ends and minimize the traffic jam in Glendale due to WM26 + the neighboring Paul McCartney concert at JOBing.com Arena.

WM25 REMATCH: Undertaker wins, so the ratings will soar back up to where they were between WrestleMania XIV and SummerSlam 2002, before "The Ratings Repeller, The Downward Trend Setter" Shawn Michaels returned to WWE.

STREET FIGHT: Vince McMahon wins with help from Shawn Michaels. Bret costs Shawn his match later. Bret and Shawn will continue feuding off-camera for another 14 years before forgiving each other again in 2024 at The 40th Anniversary of WrestleMania (even thought it would technically be the 39th).

LEGACY TRIPLE THREAT: Goldust is supposed to get a push, so Randy Orton & Ted DiBiase will announce that it's a handicap match, and they beat Cody Rhodes. Goldust will save him from a post-match beatdown, and Cody Rhodes & Goldust will feud with Orton & DiBiase for the rest of the year. Then, WWE releases Goldust in January 2011.

RAW GRUDGE MATCH: Sheamus will win when he hits HHH with his new finisher: The Shooting Star Press! He used to do the move all the time in OVW, so I'm certain he can do it at WrestleMania without issue.

SMACKDOWN! GRUDGE MATCH: Rey Mysterio will lose, so WWE can put him in the Straight Edge Society. All past other offenders of the WWE Wellness Policy will suffer the same careeer progression in forthcoming months. Up next: John Morrison.

MONEY IN THE BANK: Matt Hardy finally wins the briefcase! Afterall, he deserves it.

UNIFIED TAG TEAM TITLES: Big Show & The Miz easily beat R-Truth in an unplanned handicap match; afterwards we'll learn that John Morrison thought WrestleMania was in Phoenix, AZ, so he never made it to Glendale to participate.

Ten wrestlers for a Money in the Bank match seems like a little much to me. Having 6 or even 8 felt like a more reasonable number. On the other hand, an increase in MITB participants could mean WWE has a stronger mid-card lineup this year than in recent years and more guys in the match means more guys have the potential to move up to main-event status.

Overall I think this year, WM is going to be a dud. Only match on the card worth watching is Shawn/Undertaker match. Even that match is going to be predictable.
My picks are:
UT over Shawn but it will be a good match.
Bret Hart def. Vince
Batista def. Cena, I dont want to see Cena with any titles for awhile.
Edge def. Jericho with a spear, spear, spear.
Rey Mysterio def. CM Punk after a botched Luke Gallows interferance attempt.
Christian will win the MITB match then maybe he will cash it in right away and face Edge.
Triple H def. Sheamus with the pedigree after a dull match.
Ted DiBiase def. Rhodes & Orton
Miz/Show def. Morrison/R-Truth then a Morrison heel turn will leave R-Truth high and dry in mid match so Miz/Show can retain. After the match Joey Mercury and Morrison will reform MNM.
Beth will get the pin on Alicia Fox. Mickie will not get in the match as she is still recovering from her staph infection. Vickie will be in the match very briefly only to build up more heat on her. I thought they would have replaced Mickie with Tiffany. It will be a vey short match though as most Diva matched only lasts a few minutes anyway. Like last years Diva battle royal it will be a total waste of time to even have one.
There you go my predictions that are similiar to Kevin's but i kinda spiced mine up a bit hoping something more interesting will happen to an otherwise dull card.

I will only make a few predictions:

Money in the bank:
There are a lot of superstars today, that I like, and enjoy watching their promos and matches, but the only wrestler (besides Chris Jericho) that I truly cheer for, and care if he gets a push (or not) is Christian.
The perfect scenario for tonight's Wrestlemania would be if Christian wins and cashes it in, the same night on Jericho or Edge, setting up a feud, which I think everyone would like to see. But I would be totally pleased if he just wins the MITB. And all my bias aside, he's the most deserving one among the participants. He's at the top of his game. His promos are great, all of his matches, no matter who his opponent is, were above average, on ECW and on PPV's, and he's way over with the fans.
But just like you said, as disappointing as it is, I also think McIntyre is going to win. And the events at the recent Smackdown in the 10-man tag match, only confirm my suspicions more. I hope, though, that we're wrong. After HBK and Taker, this is the match, that I'm most looking forward (mostly because of Christian).

Triple H - Sheamus
I think that Triple H will put Sheamus over. Things that are in favour for this scenario: They are buddies, the match is in the undercard so it won't be strongly remembered in the future and won't have a big impact on Triple H's "reputation" as Superman, and last but not least, Sheamus hasn't the potential to become a bigger star than Triple H, like it was the case with Jericho and RVD who weren't put over by Trips.

HBK - Undertaker:
The same image of Triple H, interfering in their match, that you mentioned, is circulating in my head too, for a while now.
My guess for that match is: At the 28-minute mark (approximately) in a thrilling and exciting match that absolutely fulfilled the expectations and was able to beat their last year's altercation, after getting 3 Superkicks from HBK (or something else), a beaten Undertaker is lying in the middle of the ring. A few feets away, an exhausted HBK is crawling in Undertaker's direction for the final 3-count. The Phenom is beaten, the legendary streak is broken... he just needs to be pinned.
And... in THAT particular moment... Triple H comes out with a sledgehammer and brutally strikes HBK with it and ultimately costs him the match.
In that way, Undertaker preserves his undefetead streak and HBK has a plausible reason to, later in the year, come back from retirement.
The "only" problem I see in my little scenario is, that such an outcome would demand a 3rd HBK-Taker match, because it finished in that controversial way (or rather HBK would demand it, because he practically beat Taker).
I don't know, what direction, the creative team will choose for this match, and how close I am with my prediction, but this is the match I'm most looking forward.

As for the other matches, I won't make predictions and just enjoy it.

I am one of the people who can see Triple H interfering and costing Shawn the match. But, on the other hand, hasnt that been done when Triple H causes Shawn to leave and he makes a return. Well, even if Shawn retires, retirement is never permanent.
The money bank match will definitely be between Drew and Christian. I would like to see Christian win and maybe an Edge Christian program. With all these hollow victories Drew has been getting he may win, but I dont see him as serious championship material.

Undertaker v. Michaels: Taker. I hope I am wrong and HBK shocks the world, but I just don’t see it happening.

Hart v. McMahon: Hitman. This one is easy, Sharpshooter gets the win.

Batista v. Cena: Cena. As much as I hate these two, they have both impressed me over the last few weeks. I just hope this isn’t the featured match.

Jericho v. Edge: Jericho. Jericho has been putting in tremendous work lately and I think the WWE rewards him with a WM win, although Edge will probably win the title sooner rather than later.

Punk v. Mysterio: Punk. If this rivalry is just beginning, it makes no sense for Rey to win.

Triple H v. Sheamus: Sheamus. Triple H was eliminated mid-Rumble, he tapped out to Cena at EC, and he’s in, what most people feel is the least intriguing match on the card, although you are all wrong and will be impressed with these two in the ring tonight. He has been putting over people like crazy latey and not using his political advantage to promote himself and I see no reason why this will be different. This match makes no sense if HHH wins because he doesn’t need it. Putting over Sheamus, however, would help elevate him into a serious superstar heading into the future.

Orton v. DiBiase v. Rhodes: Orton. This match should be solid, but for some reason I just can’t get into any of these guys’ characters.

MizShow v. Morrison and R–Truth: MizShow. Miz has been so hot lately it just makes sense for them to win. Morrison and R-Truth will put on a hell of a match and will probably win the titles in the future, but they need more time to grow as a team.

Women’s Match: Who cares as long as there are plenty of camera shots on Layla and Maryse.

Money in the Bank: McIntyre. It wouldn’t even shock me if he wins and cashes in tonight, although I don’t think he’s ready for the big time yet. On a side not, the premise of a 10 man ladder match is simply ridiculous.

Taker
Hart
Cena
Edge
Punk
Christian
Trips
Orton
Show Miz
Team Phoenix

"But sometimes Vince likes to change things up a bit when he thinks everyone "knows" what's going to happen."

Could that have been why the rumored hair-versus-mask stipulation for the CM Punk-Rey match never saw the light of day? Not that I'm complaining. I "know" what would have happened in that one.

Loved the Sun article on Shawn Michaels and am watching the show tonight with a "heavy heart" but yet hopeful after reading your column. Triple H and Shawn are my two favorites so I don't want Triple H interfering/costing him the match, but I also don't want Shawn retiring (although I think he will). I'm hoping for a DQ somehow that Undertaker retains streak, but Shawn doesn't retire.
Regarding other matches, I never thought I'd ever be for Edge, but I can't stand Jericho so I'm hoping for an Edge win.
I also hope Morrison/Truth beat Big Show/Miz and Christian wins MITB and not McIntyre, although I think Drew will win that one.

Anyway, should be interesting. Probably one of the better PPV's over the last 6 months.

Why is everyone saying HHH will screw over Shawn? I think that it would be more "surprising" if he actually helps Shawn end the Undertaker's streak. That's the angle that people aren't expecting...

You know what would be interesting? If HHH screws HBK, becomes a heel, and then reforms Evolution with Batista and Randy Orton. That would be amazing!

When did the WWE ban blading? I know its been awhile since I've seen it now that you mention it, but do you know approximately when it happened or what led to that decision?

RESPONSE FROM KE: It was done in then past year ort so because WWE wants to project a more family friendly image.

I'm assuming that you guys are saying Hunter attacks Taker, correct? If he goes after HBK, he'll cause Taker to get dq'd, and therefore end the streak.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Match acn only end by pin or submission.

There are far too many matches for the MITB winner to cash in tonight, it will happen but not tonight

My predictions:

HBK wins clean and then retires after losing to Triple H at WM 27.

John Cena wins as he and Dave put up an awesome match.

Edge wins after hitting 2 spears and getting hit by a spear from Y2J.

Christian wins MITB, gets traded to Smackdown and has a program with Edge.

Randy Orton wins against Legacy as they finally implode, with Rhodes and DiBiase costing eachother the victory.

Triple H loses to Sheamus to put him over.

I really think McIntyre winning MITB would be a mistake. It seems clear to me that he is not ready to be a main eventer, not to mention that there are several guys in this match who are more deserving. I agree with you that I think he wins, I just really hope we're wrong, Kev.

Or how about Bret interfering in HBK's match and "screwing" Shawn?

Kevin, great analysis overall. I especially like your call of the Shawn v. Undetaker.

I also agree with you that Vince will fall to Bret, but there have to be some twists. I see some kind of interference on behalf of Vinny Mac, although I don't who will come to his aid. Perhaps Sheamus? A surprise newcomer? Regardless, I see one of the third generation Harts coming to the aid of Uncle Bret, who pulls out the victory.

Looking forward to a great show!

Boy, I honestly thought Shawn would win. I don't fall into the "it should be an up-and-comer that makes his mark by ending the streak" camp, and I think Shawn is the one guy that could've ended it without backlash. Sigh.

Truly shocked that Swagger won; nice to see, though, although it's too bad that they hurt his credibility so much in the last few months that he seems undeserving. I'd like to see him try to cash in, only to loose because of interference by Christian, setting up a feud between the two (though, I guess they did feud for a while in ECW... maybe that's not such a great idea...).

Disappointed that HHH won (not that I like Sheamus, but it would've at least made the match memorable) and Punk lost. But Jericho won, so it balances out.
