The Monday Night War is making my life more complicated
There’s been plenty of talk the past month or so about TNA moving Impact to Monday nights to go head to head with WWE’s Raw and what it all means, but there’s one aspect of the new Monday Night War that hasn’t been discussed: How does this affect me?
I have mixed feelings about the move. As a wrestling fan, I think the competition is going to make for some interesting developments and hopefully bring out the best in both companies. However, my quality of life is going to take a hit.
My days off as an assistant sports editor at The Baltimore Sun fluctuate (Ring Posts rarely takes a day off), and I often work late Mondays. Tonight, for instance, I won’t get home until after both shows have ended.
That means I will have four hours of wrestling (actually a little less since I fast-forward through the commercials) to watch on tape. Then, of course, I have to write a couple blog posts with my in-depth thoughts on each show. What makes matters even worse is that the only television show that I never miss that isn’t wrestling also comes on at 9 p.m. on Mondays – “24.” Thank God for hulu.com.
Looking on the bright side, I will now only have one hour of wrestling to watch on Thursdays instead of three.
I know no one reading this cares about my plight, but, hey, what good is having a blog if you can’t use it to vent?

I feel your pain Kev lol . . . but we need your thoughts on wrestling! . .2010 is going to be an epic year for pro-wrestling.

Kev,
We may be on the opposite ends of opinion a majority of the time, with the exception I HATE the TNA plants, Bubba and the Nasty Boys too.
But, I give it to you. You work hard, and you keep me in the loop on things that I could not possibly stay up on unless it was my job.
But, just think you and I are fully employed in one of the toughest economies we've had in our lifetime. We are blessed---we have wrestling and we have work! Keep up the good work, man.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Appreciate the words. And don't get me wrong -- writing the blog is a labor of love, and I'd be watching all the wrestling shows on TV anyway. I just wish there were more hours in the day.

If it helps mate, I wish I could devote more time to wrestling. Work, family and fitness inhibits my ability to watch Smackdown completely (I wish they'd move the time as it is the best wrestling show for the last year) and I can only occasionaly watch Raw. Thank god for recordable DVD's your blog and youtube keeping me up to date because I never miss PPV's! It's harder being a wrestling fan in your mid 30's than it was as a teenager!!

Kev, hang in there. We appreciate your words, and your willingness to put the adventures of Jack Bauer aside for a bit. The IWC - marks and smart marks alike - have benefitted from your contributions.
Besides that, not to worry - if history has taught us anything, Jarrett, Hogan, Bischoff, and Russo in the same place is not bound to last...

Big Kev,
As an ex-native of Baltimore, and a wrestling junkie since my days of worshipping the Magnificent Muraco, your blog has been an essential part of my daily readings. I know it can be a pain, and take way too much of your time, but from someone "down under", I have found it informative, humorous and news breaking.
RAW is screened here on Wednesdays, Smackdown on Fridays (even before it's screened in the US) and TNA on Saturdays, so I read your blogs to prepare me for what I'll be seeing....and whether I actually want to see it in the first place!!!
Keep up the great work, and don't ever stop....I'd be "lost" without it!!!

Yes ladies and gentlemen of the Ring Post community, wile Kevin Eck may seem like a larger than life character, we must remember that he is a normal man. Exhibit A: He, like everyone else, wishes there were more hours in the day. Exhibit B: While he enjoys women's division wrestling, he also understands what the Beautiful People are used for. Exhibit C: He watches TV on hulu. com. Kevin Eck: The Common Wrestling Fan

Hey Kevin, that makes two of us. I'm in the same boat as you, even with 24. I told my wife about Impact moving to Monday nights and she didn't even bat an eye until I told her I probably wouldn't be able to get in her Jack Bauer fix until Tuesday night. She didn't seem too impressed to hear that wrestling trumped 24.

That does suck, I say switch to AT&T U-Verse TV. I have Verizon Fios and can only record two shows at one time, with U-Verse you can record four shows at a time. No I'm not trying to advertise for AT&T because I like Verizon a lot better. Hopefully this helps you a little bit, keep up the good work.

Kev, just want to say thanks for the hard work on the blog. It was a combination of attending a live Raw and finding your blog while surfing the internet a little over a year ago that renewed my interest in wrestling after a long layoff. I don't agree with you all of the time, but definitely enjoy reading.

If you post the phone number of your boss, we could all give a call to demonstrate the importance of your blog and pressure them to change your schedule. Home number would probably be more effective.
Thanks for all the hard work!
RESPONSE FROM KE: Honestly (I'm not kissing up here), my boss is a huge supporter of the blog and he knows how hard all of us in the sports dept. have been working since we were downsized last year.

Hey, hey, hey, enough of the lame excuses... What's wrong with your attitude... I expect a full review of both shows every tuesday at 11am!
LOL! *just kidding*!
Kev, I also feel your pain. But I really hope that you further provide us with your excellent reviews, cause' it's the best wrestling blog by far. As duv_UK said, we need your thoughts. Keep up the good work!

Kevin, don't ever,EVER, miss an episode of 24.. watching on Hulu hurts ratings and will not help the show come back for a final 9th season

DAMMIT WHY STING?! WHYYY?!
Who decided that Abyss should be emoting all the time?
P.S. Kevin, you really need to live-blog this nonsense.

Don't worry, Kev, just stick it out til September when TNA goes back to Thursdays.

awwww Kev...don't feel too bad, at least you've got a job
Posted by: MitZi | March 8, 2010 11:31 PM
Cue the half dozen backstage columnettes with Brooke Eck weeping and typing "don't do it, Kev! Don't watch it all. It's just not worth it any more."

I'm not good at this sort of stuff, but well...
Your blog is awesome, Kevin. I for one appreciate the time and effort you put into writing down your thoughts on pro wrestling shows. I may disagree with them a lot of times, but I still enjoy them, nonetheless.
Your quality of life should always come first. I hope I speak for most people here when I say that we don't mind if you take your time in watching and reviewing the shows -- it doesn't have to be all done by the next day or the day after that, or even the day after that. It's your blog which you do because you love pro wrestling. It's not your job.
Whatever you decide to do, Kevin, I hope that you can maintain your current quality of life.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Bauer is the baddest man on the planet.

IDK BOUT THIS "MONDAY NIGHT WAR" TO BE HONEST I ENJOYED WATCHING WWE RAW ON MONDAYS AND TNA IMPACT ON THURSDAY...ALL THAT FLIPPING BACK AND FORTH AINT REALLY ALL THAT COOL!!!!

Kev,
The blog is much appreciated by all us devoted wrestling fans who enjoy your insightful take on both the WWE and TNA. Thankfully here in Oz we don't have that problem, as Downunder Brian said wrestling is pretty well spaced out down here and TNA and WWE is shown on the same channel so no fear of them going up against each other. Mind you over here WWE starts at 3:30 in the afternoon which meant I had to take a part time contract if I wanted to see it on Wednesday not Saturday afternoon (and Y'all think I am kidding don't you)
All the best with managing the schedule and say sorry and thanks to your wife from all of us.

I think you need an assistant.
@ readers: Anyone interested???? :P
RESPONSE FROM KE: I would love an assistant. Preferably one who looks like Tiffany.

Kevin, you do a great job with this blog! since I stumbled across it awhile back, I read it daily. You keep me up to date when I can't see a show. Come down to Florida when you get vacation, we'll take you up to Tampa for Florida Championship Wrestling's weekly tapings, then jaunt over to Orlando for free Impact tapings, too!
Posted by: jon in bradenton, florida | March 9, 2010 7:15 AM
Who actually "tapes" anything nowadays? C'mon Kev, welcome to 2010! :)
Posted by: Dean | March 9, 2010 7:22 AM
Kev,
While I feel your plight on Monday night TV, I am actually relieved TNA moved to Monday nights. It has always seemed like every show my girlfriend wants to watch is on Thursday between 9 and 11. And you can only TIVO so many shows at once! Let's just say that to be able to watch wrestling four days a week, I had to watch TNA in the bedroom on Thursday nights so she could watch Private Practice and Project Runway. Now that they are on Monday, I can tape it and fast forward through the insane amount of commercials the show has, along with some of the more asnine matches/promos that TNA throws out there from time to time.

Hey Kev, here's a suggestion. Take a cue from Vincent Kennedy McMahon.
Announce a guest "host" for your Raw summaries each week. I promise you... "Only good things will happen."
Baltimore Sun ratings will be higher than ever! We'll blow the Baltimore Chronicle right out of the water!
Posted by: The Natural | March 9, 2010 8:59 AM
I'm with you, buddy. I watch RAW, iMPACT, and 24. My wife also likes to watch Two & a Half Men so we have a full-blown DVR war going on as the "dual tuner" can only record two shows at once.
I convinced her to watch Two & a Half Men online, and we will DVR both 24 and iMPACT. I'm afraid RAW is going to have to go. I like TNA much better.
Althought, maybe we'll take your suggestion and watch 24 on Hulu as well.
Posted by: Chris Monty | March 9, 2010 11:09 AM
You think you have it bad? My Monday nights include How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, House, 24, Law & Order, Heroes, WWE Raw and now TNA. Even with two dual-DVR boxes in the house, it isn't enough to record everything and I usually spend the rest of the week catching up just on the Monday night shows.

its 2010!!! i get letters for ya my man... DVR!!!! 24 thats still on? wait i think i saw Hulk Hogan/ Ric Flair ...wrestling the other nite, let me check the calender again...

We get it... don't expect anything until Wednesday at the earliest... it's cool.

It's time to get some staff for your blog to help alleviate your load. I'm thinking the TWO TIME TWO TIME Comment of the Week Winner...in case you don't know who that is, just look below where it says "Posted by".

Jeez, stop whining Kev, why the hell do you have to stay at the office and watch? Your wife might be falling for that but c'mon, I know the newspaper industry is taking a hit these days but are you telling me the Sun won't spring for your cable, an extra T.V. (like anyone in America has one) and your high speed connection from home. Surely they already are, so why are you really getting home so late? DVR service is a minimal cost, all the other stuff the Sun pays for at the very least part of it if not all, and then you probably claim it on your taxes as an office expense etc. Go home for dinner, wind down, psyche yourself up for intensely and objectively viewing the shows for later analysis, then rehash, study, rewind check notes, and put together your often (not always) insightful views and thoughts on the shows. You aren't exactly doing play by play for Monday Night Football (or even Saturday afternoon Morgan State) games here. Who is it you are trying to illicit pity from? With the aforementioned alleged "quality of life drop" you mention? Your blog followers, your boss, your family or your "REAL BOSS" (I have one too she just has a different last name---for now,yuk-yuk) Mrs. Kev! Duhmp, duhmp, dahmp, daahmm. My lame sound effects trying to match the premise of this blog. Just funnin', last time I go excited about the direction of TNA I was shown to be a true optimist when quickly Hernandez, Young, Morgan and several others went from the hope to the dopes, disappearing on and off without cause or reason, then it became apparent (at least to me) that TNA didn't want to keep this momentum going with the soon to be addition of Hogan, Bischoff and crew. As you have correctly noted the including of Hall,Booba, The Nasty Boys(how appropriate is that name now? should be The Nasty Fat A--ed out of shape old men,the closest they get to being Boys is**** I'll stop now,it's a family blog) Jordan et al, is puzzling at best, worrisome in the middle and just plain troubling and destructive if serious. You have also correctly noted some magnificent changes, potential for growth and puzzling wonderment of what could and should be. So again let's hope for the best, not as the best show or angles but the best variety so we the wrestling fans have something else to watch besides the spoon-fed BS that Vincent shoves down our throats with regularity. Undertaker,Hart,Michaels,Vince, I don't hear the same criticism of their age and obvious past-their-prime participation. And Flair well I understand you feel cheated by the huge retirement angle but please, towards the end he was drawing raves from you on his performances in WWE, pick a sport they all do it, for every Jim Brown,Barry Sanders, Sandy Koufax or Kareem Abdul Jabbar, there are a thousand players in all sports that have multiple come backs, Foreman, Jordan,Unitas, many more unretired at the upper echelons of their professions, some with success and some to great embarrassment. So ease up on Flair, with all of his wives, his lifestyle, & money issues was there really any doubt? I'm not a Hogan guy, much more of a Flair fan from the "day", but I have to admit those guy's put on a pretty damn good old school rasslin' blood bath last night. Now they need to figure out how limited these fights can be for the both of them before Hogan ends up needing a "clapper" in the ring and Flair's head explodes when he starts to rant, his face turns 3 shades of red, those veins pop out and oops there it was. Let's hope they can, as for the Hogan to Brooke "this is the last time" pleeaase, anybody who believes that is dumber than the dumbest blonde joke of all time. Let's hope we all saw a beginning to some fun in wrestling for awhile. At least we're excited, all in all I think your "quality of life" is going to improve.
