Smackdown: CM Punk makes Rey Mysterio’s daughter's birthday a memorable one

CM Punk constantly preaches that because he is Straight Edge, “I’m better than you.” I don’t know if that’s true, but when it comes to playing a heel character, Punk just might be able to boast that he is – to steal a line from Chris Jericho – “the best in the world at what I do.”

Punk was simply awesome on the mic during the opening segment of Friday night’s Smackdown. Rey Mysterio had brought his wife, son and daughter into the ring with him, and asked the crowd to join him in signing “Happy Birthday” to his 9-year-old daughter, Aalyah. The celebration was interrupted by The Straight Edge Society.

Punk challenged Mysterio to a match at WrestleMania, but said that he first wanted to fight Mysterio right now. Punk went on to describe in graphic detail how he was going to destroy Mysterio in front of his family. He told Aalyah that he was going to make her father beg for mercy, and said to Mysterio’s son, Dominic, that he was going to make his father squeal like a pig. Punk also suggestively referred to Mysterio’s wife, Angie, as “beautiful and voluptuous” and told her she would have to put her hand over her mouth to muffle her screams.

The entire time this was going on, Mysterio stood in front of his family, repeatedly telling Punk “not now.” Punk dropped to his knees and said that he was getting down on Mysterio’s level. He slapped Mysterio across the face, but Mysterio refused to take the bait, and he and his family left the ring. Punk then proceeded to creepily sing “Happy Birthday” with a look of pure evil on his face. Brilliant.

One drawback to the scene was that I thought it made Mysterio look a bit weak that he didn’t return to fight Punk once his family was safely up the ramp, but it did make viewers want to stay tuned because it was a pretty safe bet that Mysterio was going to attack Punk later in the show. That’s exactly what happened, although the scuffle was quickly broken up and Punk ran to the back. It was just enough physical contact to whet the fans’ appetite for another confrontation between the two.

As I was watching the segment – which was easily the best thing on the show – I kept thinking how Punk would get even more heat if Mysterio’s 12-year-old son joined Punk’s SES, reminiscent of the ECW angle in the late ’90s when The Sandman’s young son turned on his father and joined up with Raven. Would that angle be too extreme for the PG WWE?

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Jericho finally got the better of Edge in a physical confrontation during Jericho’s Highlight Reel. As Edge went to spear him yet again, Jericho was ready for it this time, smashing the charging Edge in the head with the world heavyweight title belt. By the way, the “spear” chant seems to be catching on to some degree. …

When Jericho turned heel in 2008, didn’t he say that he would never do the Highlight Reel again? And I thought Jericho was an honest man. …

The third time was the charm for Drew McIntyre in his quest to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. As I expected, his loss to Matt Hardy last week was expunged from his record by Vince McMahon, just as his loss to Kane the previous week was. This time, McIntyre was matched up with an enhancement guy that he quickly squashed. As I said last week, I don’t like this angle. Instead of putting heat on McIntyre for getting preferential treatment, I think it just makes him come off as someone the fans shouldn’t take seriously. For a guy such as McIntyre who isn’t really over yet, that doesn’t make a lot of sense. …

Considering that The Miz lost to R-Truth, it didn’t surprise me that The Big Show defeated John Morrison. At least Morrison got in a decent amount of offense before falling victim to the knockout punch. …

I liked the booking for The Miz/R-Truth match. R-Truth got a significant victory, while The Miz losing due to a distraction by Daniel Bryan furthered their angle. On a side note, Bryan’s clothes looked a little disheveled when he came out to the ring. Perhaps The Miz needs to give him some fashion tips. …

Tiffany, now a wrestler, showed some fire during her non-title match against WWE women’s champion Michelle McCool. ...

The fans were into Beth Phoenix as a babyface when she saved Tiffany, who was being attacked by McCool, Layla and Vickie Guerrero. …

Guerrero as a member of Simply Flawless should be pretty entertaining, but she needs to work on her selling. She looked as if she was barely conscious after taking a clothesline from Phoenix, but a few seconds later she was up and running full speed up the ramp. She must have John Cena’s superhuman recuperative powers. ...

I couldn’t believe WWE was giving us The Hart Dynasty versus Cryme Tyme for the umpteenth time, but fortunately it only lasted a little more than a minute before The Undertaker appeared and laid out all four men. It was at that point that I started my own chant: “Thank you, Taker” (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap).

As a parent Rey not coming back after his family was safe did not make him look weak. His little girl was shaken up real bad so as a Father he had to stay with her to help calm her down.
BTW, his daughter looks like she has a future in acting, her facial expressions were great out there, better then his son and wife, she looked like a natural actor.

I got a kick out of that "OBEY" sign which had Punk's likeness on it.

With the exception of the Punk intro (brilliant) and the Edge-Jericho confrontation at the end (slightly less brilliant, but incredibly enjoyable nonetheless), the show was pretty poor. The McIntyre angle is getting more tiresome by the week. When he came out and ranted about spoiling everybody's parties, I thought it was kinda funny. Now, the only angle is how he's McMahon's golden child, and he's done less to earn that distinction than Sheamus did to win the championship. (And I can't stand Sheamus, either.) The match was pointless; if McIntyre beats the guy who should win MITB (Christian) I will be deeply disappointed and annoyed as well. Finally... the Undertaker segment. To quote Miz: Really? What does the segment accomplish? He beat up a bunch of guys he's got no beef with, and it doesn't make him look scarier - to call these guys mid-carders is charitable at best. The lights-going-out-and-Taker-showing-up gimmick is tired, and the scheduled match was painfully uninteresting. Lose-lose. Solution? Get Swagger or Kofi out there... two under-utilized guys who could use some face time on a top brand.

I have a horrible feeling McIntyre is going to win the Money in the Bank.

So, Tiffany goes from the world's hottest GM, to the world's hottest babysitter, and now to the world's hottest wrestler. Her entrance and attire was just... holy damn.

Punk was simply incredible. Just incredible. I thought the best touch were him 'dropping down' to Mysterio's level and that final happy birthday song, as if what he just did was supposed to make the girl feel happy.

I thought Punk was very entertaining and I think he may have passed Jericho as the top heel on Smackdown. The way he was scaring Rey's daughter was awesome all though I wanted to go thru my tv to slap Punk for scaring her.
You are right about Jericho saying that the last Highlight Reel in 2008 after he smashed Shawn Michaels right thru the Jeri-tron.
I am getting into the Miz/Daniel Bryan storyline more and more. Miz is always entertaining on the mike but I think his in ring skills need to improve some.
Tiffany as a GM or a wrestler is always great to look at for obvious reasons. But her wrestling skills surprised me some. I know Smackdown needs another diva to be a face, I was really expecting a diva from Raw being sent over to help replace Mickie and since departed Maria.
But Tiffany really took the beating well and to have Beth Phoenix come down for the save was awesome to see. I guess she will be a monster face similiar to Kane.
When The Hart Dynasty/Cryme Tyme match started I left the room because I am so tired of seeing the same match over, then I came back I thought my tv was broken but the the Undertaker appeared and I said thank you for saving me from a torturous match that I have seen a million times.
I think the end of the Highlight Reel was predictable after Edge speared Jericho so many times. I t was over due that Jericho get something back to get back some heat.
Overall not a bad show but I think they could have made it a little better.

I'm not a fan of angles involving the wrestlers' families. When Rey came out with his wife and kids, I thought to myself: "Oh no, WTF are they doing here? Please WWE, don't torture us with this". I was counting the seconds till Punk's appearance. But the creative team did a good job with this story and gave a plausible reason behind Rey's actions.
And thanks to Punk, it turned out very good. He was absolutely phenomenal. The heat was incredible. And what a psycho he was, when he was singing the song. Wow.
I'm not familiar with the Sandman-Raven angle you mentioned, but I think that would be an awesome and memorable storyline.

I would be more than happy if Christian wins the MITB, but sadly, looking on the guys Vince recently pushed, I think we got the winner in McIntyre. I really hope that I'm wrong.

Good review, I agree with you with the whole Cryme Tyme and hart Dynasty thing they've been at since like June 2009. True about Vickie's "kip-up". later man, email me

Do you think Tiffany will be a regular face diva on the ring?
It's hard to tell who will win MITB this year.
Christian seems to be the obvious choice but... Maybe Ziggler?

he is a coward

Kevin, why do you think T.H.D. hasn't gotten involved in the Brett Hart angle? Seems like a natural fit to me. Perhaps saving Brett from some of the beat downs lately?? They wear the same colors and carry his name.

I was at the show at Key Arena. There were a couple of interesting things that might not have come across on the broadcast. For one, Punk completely botched the GTS on Kane the first time, then immediately picked him up and did it again. He had a ridiculous amount of heat throughout.

Also, we saw Miz/Bryan v. Truth/Otunga during NXT, then sat through Truth's entrance rap and a very similar match about 45 minutes later on SD. The crowd might have seemed dead during the second match, but that's because it was the second time we saw the same match. Hard to suspend disbelief when they rub it in your face that way.

Hi Kevin. Yes, thankyou indeed Undertaker. Phew! What a relief. I was just about to FF. What was the deal with Bryan's shirt? was it meant to indicate a bit of a scuffle backstage or what? I liked the bit where Bryan sadly shook his head behind the Miz. Other thoughts on SD: Punk was breathtakingly menacing and the bushier his beard gets the more evil he becomes. John Morrison was expertly agile and exciting as usual - but you just knew he would lose to the show which is about right for the buildup to Mania. It would be nice to see Morrison team up with Bourne at some time ( and draft ) in the future. Tiffany wrestling - yeah! Beth Phoenix comes over well as a face and I assume she will now tag with Mickie James sometime soon.

I thought it would be a long time until I saw a promo better then the one Batista cut on Raw, but it only took two weeks. We all knew Punk was coming, but he was Amazing. It's a tribute to the man that I think he's great, and I still want to see him get his a-- kicked. WWE is better right now then it's been in years; God help TNA.

BTW, I didn't think it made Mysterio look week, merely like a good husband and father. His place was still with his family, make sure they're okay and safe. I don't see how they can do a mask vs. hair match now, though. "Punk, you embarrassed me in front of my family. Now I'm going to embarrass you... by taking your hair!" Just doesn't work.

So I just recently moved to Seattle, about a month ago. And I'm living a few blocks away from the Key Arena where Smackdown was filmed this week.

Funny thing is, I saw the signs for it over the past couple weeks on the marquis outside the arena but I just assumed it was a house show. If I had known it would be a taping, with a CM Punk promo like that, I would've made an attempt to go see it in person.

Anyone who watched the Undertaker beating those guys out would say he's mad about Shawn, but we all know it's mostly because he's tired of the same ol' "crap" (hey, it's PG programming) on WWE.

Wait, we're seeing new stuff. Oh, it's a Irish albino with red-tinted hair.

Huh? Chris Jericho brought back the Highlight Reel? What's next, getting the countdown intro back? Y2J? Man, keep tweeting and you'll end up becoming a hypocritical, lecherous tapeworm like all of us...

What better way to get heat than to make children cry! Was that Mysterio's real daughter? She was adorable! She either was generally scared when Punk came out or a good little actress for her age...she really looked scared! Shame on you Punk! One of the better segments I have seen of late. Bravo!

You might be on to something brilliant there with the rehashing of the Sandman/Raven storyline.

Punk would pick up even more heel heat for crossing the line, while Mysterio would get support as he tries to save his son.

I like it.

As much as I didn't want to see Hart Dynasty Vs Cryme tyme I always like seeing The Hart Dynasty in action and I really loathe them being given a jobbers entrance.

Can I just say, I am so glad they finally mentioned Vickie & Edge's former "relationship." I have been waiting for that since Edge returned, now all they need is for Vickie and Edge to meet backstage next week, and maybe Vickie put him in a handicap match for his comments this week.

Loved the "Highlight Reel" in general.

Decent smackdown.

How hot was Serena!! Bald or not, she's a cutie.

I'm with you Kevin, Punk is a great heel. I wish they have someone else join the SES soon.

Kevin, I was thinking the same thing when Vickie got layed out. I thought perhaps Vickie was just playing dead so Beth wouldn't touch hurt her anymore...I mean maybe it was my imagination but I think Vickie's legs were shaking in fear while she was on the mat

Punk and Y2J were both outstanding on Friday night. They are the best heels in the WWE by a fair bit at the moment. I am enjoying the build up on Smackdown and Raw at the moment toward Wrestlemania. It is shapping up to be very good this year.

Enjoyable show- punk is on the top of his game, and jericho and edge is starting to get interesting. loved edges comparison of vickie and show. brilliant..

Also, why was tyson kidd being put over as a "submission specialist"? i dont think ive ever seen him make someone tap, although it looked like he would have this time had taker not so rudely interrupted!

I hope Rey doesn't bring his family back onstage. They already did the "saving Domenic" story with Eddie. While it may not have been completely a rerun, it's similar enough to be cringe worthy.

The Punk/Sandman's kid angle would make sense for the PPV after WM.

Have Punk win at WM, and before the next PPV have the kid become straight edge and renounce his father and family.

They would have to hire 100 police officers for Punk to get out of the building alive.

Instead, what if both kids went Straight Edge or if it was just the daughter? This could be incredibly disturbing. All the kiddies would think VKM is a genius for thinking this up when it was an old ECW storyline.

The WWE is showing poor judgement by involving Mysterio's children in this angle.

Smackdown was on its a game cuz rey beat the hell out of punk, tiffany did a good job and everyone else did they thang

I don’t know if that’s true, but when it comes to playing a heel character, Punk just might be able to boast that he is – to steal a line from Chris Jericho – “the best in the world at what I do.”

What's slightly funny is that Jericho himself got the line from an X-Men comic. It's one of Wolverine's more famous lines, although Jericho changed it a bit. The original goes like this: "I'm the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn't very nice."

Kevin, just a subtle observation. Punk told Rey's daughter that she was allowed to cover her eyes; Dominic was allowed to cover his ears, and Rey's wife was told that she was allowed to cover her mouth. Would this be a reference to See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Speak no Evil?

RESPONSE FROM KE: That's a great observation.

Oh no he brought back the highlight reel. Maybe now he will start appearing on Raw, or start winning all his matches.
Jericho: I approve this message.....to be false

Sorry - I was immediately turned off for Friday's episode w/Rey's family, particularly the daughter. While I know it's fake, and I'm sure all the "key players" were introduced backstage and probably went out to dinner later, and the child was acting, it really bothered me to watch this - I think this was WWE at it's lowest. I actually turned it off after that and decided to give up on the whole show. Thanks for your re-cap, Kevin - but this family introduction does nothing for this viewer at all.

Smackdown was pretty good this week. Punk is fantastic. Kev, did you notice at the begining of Punk's promo the "W'
was upside down on his mic. Anyway, Tiffany was impressive as all get out. Jericho/Edge was nice. I am also glad there was a little reference to Vicke and Edge's past. Like the jab he threw back to Jericho about past girlfriends. Actually looking forward to Wrestlemania.

Jericho's catchphrase is indeed taken from Wolverine.I am glad that someone else has also noted that.

So what about the Hart Dynasty/Brett Hart angle question Mr.Eck,any thoughts?

Punk/Mysterio is great right now. Just don't let that rumored Hair v. Mask angle happen!

Is it just me or in the new PG WWE there has been quite a few matches involving blood? I mean i heard they we gonna put them in black and white, but so far none of that has happened. Stupid Vince, get a life and make it TV14 we're all waiting for TNA to take over and for Vince to wake up and get his head out of Hulk Hogan's a--!
