More bad ratings news for TNA
It’s hard to put a positive spin on the 0.8 rating that TNA Impact – headlined by a match between Jeff Hardy and TNA world champion A.J. Styles – did on Monday, but with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin returning for one night on Raw, the number really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
Raw, which was headlined by a contract signing with Bret Hart and Vince McMahon (moderated by Austin) and three main event-level matchups from past WrestleManias, did a 3.7, up from last week’s 3.4.
TNA president Dixie Carter commented on the Impact rating Tuesday on Twitter, saying, “Although its classic David v Goliath, 1 stone will not bring down our giant, its a different day. It'll take time & commitment, we have both.”
I agree with her that trying to compete with and possibly surpass WWE in a head-to-head battle is an arduous task, and having a vision and the patience necessary to see it through are essential, but at some point you have to assess whether the goal is truly attainable. If the ratings continue at the current level or get worse in the coming weeks and months, TNA should strongly consider either moving Impact’s start time up an hour or moving back to Thursdays.

Any idea what Spike was pulling in that time slot prior to the move?

I don't really know much about ratings numbers - what sort of number would make a network take a show off the air or move it to a different slot?

TNA should strongly consider either moving Impact’s start time up an hour or moving back to Thursdays.
Or making the product better. First step: Fire Russo,Nasty Boyz and any other Hogan crony . Second step: Call up Paul Heyman or Jim Cornette and give them carte blanche and whatever money it takes them to say yes.
RESPONSE FROM KE: A roster that talented in the hands of Paul Heyman would indeed be something.

Dixie kept referring to the david v goliath story....the "1 stone will not bring down our giant" comment...so is the WWE = david and tna= Goliath ?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I took it to mean that WWE is "our giant" in the sense that they are the giant TNA has to take down

Raw is in "Road to Wrestlemania" mode. The sledding is going to be real tough in the immediate future. At least wait until April before panicking.

When I heard that TNA was moving from Thursday to Monday I argued that it was setting itself up for failure and it's looks like they are well on their way.
However, if they go back to Thursday then they have essentially admitted they were in over their heads, out of their league and had no idea what they were doing.
So I think remaining on Monday night but moving up their start time an hour is probably the most prudent approach. But I would wait a few weeks before making that move.

Maybe Spike TV will run their "wrestling" show 3 more times in the hopes it pulls a 3.2 for the week.

It was completely idiotic to not publicize the Hardy-Styles match at all.
Swerves, surprises, mystery guests etc. do not equal high ratings.
One would think that lesson would have already been learned after WCW.

Let's face it, Carter was bullied or duped into to moving Impact to Mondays by Bischoff. and Hogan. Now they're in trouble. They have to much ego between the 2 of them to admit they'll probally fail, they won't move Impact back to Thursdays and Vince will buy TNA for pennies on the dollar within 3 years. Hogan has it his contract that he gets paid regardless of what happens to TNA. As far as Eric goes, he's a great TV character but I'm tired of people treating him like he's some creative genius. Besides his ability to spend someone elses money and the nWo, what else has he really done? Him and his buddy from The Wonder Years have been trying to pimping out countless TV show ideas that nobody wants to air to countless TV networks. TNA can't afford to produce a live show ever Monday so they'll continue to put on a live show then tape one for the following Monday. Most of us will just read the spoilers and won't watch. Impacts ratings dropped every quarter last night even with the great Hardy/Styles main event. These were the lowest rating since 2006. If those aren't enough reason, read this article from The Wall Street Journal, it's all you need to know to why this isn't a "war". http://magazine.wsj.com/features/phenomenon/rogues-gallery/

TNA was STUPID for moving to Monday nights durring the road to WrestleMania

Everyone needs to chill. Don't panic....it's very simple what needs to happen for TNA! At the peak of the WCW/wwf monday night wars, NITRO & raw were both doing ratings of what wwe is doing now...so that being said TNA just has to figure out where the WCW fans are and promote its product to them. It is obvious that they ARE NOT watching raw, because the ratings # is virtually the same as it was then. So the people that used to be WCW fans have simply quit watching wrestling. I am proof, because I haven't watched wrestling since WCW went defunct....I can't be the only one. I'd like to know your take on my thoughts Kev. wooooooooooo.

Wouldn't common sense tell you that going head on with WWE would create an urgency to grab the viewer quickly with a strong first segment? You would be safe in figuring that WWE is going to take several minutes to get Stone Cold out to the ring, so you don't waste that time having Flair bash his cuts (obviously not a week old). No, the smart move is to set up and promote a Hardy vs Styles match as quickly as possible. Knowing that WWE is going to finish their show with a contract signing (I don't care who is involved, contract signings are not very exciting!), then TNA could have safely assumed wrestling fans would have been watching Spike for a Hardy vs Styles main event.
Kevin, do you know who has the final call on blocking out the shows for TNA? I can't imagine that Bischoff, who has been in television for a long time, would not have considered this stuff.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I believe that Bischoff is pretty much calling the shots on the creative end.

BW-
Have you been watching Impact at all?
My God, you can't promote to the old WCW fans anymore than they care currently doing. Sting, Hogan, Bischoff, Jimmy Hart, Nash, Hall, X-Pac, what more do you want?
One Warrior Nation?

I like that TNA is doing all it can to surpass WWE in the ratings war and its great to see the monday night wars re-ignited. But let's be honest, it's never going to work is it? Whatever TNA tries to do, it's always going to be bettered by WWE. A lot of the talent that's got anything good going on in TNA right now made their names in WWE or other companies. People like Angle, Foley, Flair, Nash, Anderson, RVD, Hardy, and even Jimmy Hart and the Nasty Boys. Most of it is just ex-WWE guys trying to live off the reputation they built in that company, but doing it in a completely different one. Obviously TNA has so many great performers that have never even worked for WWE. People like Styles, Joe, Beer Money, Abyss, British Invasion, Beautiful People, Wolfe, Sting etc. But, as far as right now goes, the main angles on Impact are saved for the older guys who were in WWE and hardly anything good is going to the proper TNA originals. If the ratings continue like this then there's no point in TNA even trying to fight on. With the genuine star power that the WWE has at the moment, there's no way that a company like TNA can stand toe to toe with it, even if it does have the almighty Hulk Hogan at the helm attempting to steady the ship. TNA should stop dedicating it's air time to washed up has-beens and start concentrating on the wrestlers of the future that can lead the company into a proper war with WWE.

There really is no war. A bunch of pathetic, 20-year past their prime, ego maniacs duped a naive woman into giving them control of her company. They are going to run it into the ground, collect their checks and be done with it. Hogan, Flair and the rest of the WCW losers are a disgrace.

I am absolutely shocked that Jeff Hardy, perhaps the 2nd most marketable wrestler in the world, was not in thousands of commercials (including commercials on the USA network) in the week preceding Impact. I'm somewhat of an avid wrestling fan and I had no idea whether he would be working a match.

Can anyone please tell me what makes Raw so watchable and great? Really I find the show boring and laughable at this point, and now no more chair shots to the head. No bleeding, no chair shots, no excitement and people watch this? At least with TNA there is the shock factor and such. Sorry but Vince will fall, just give it time.

Ehh all this is meanless. Smackdown is still the most entertaining show right now.

I'm not BW, but there is a lot more they could do to finally pull in the ex-WCW fans. Here are a few suggestions:
1. We need the Nasty Boys to come out to their old WCW theme (I for one miss their singing)
2. The American Males Buff Bagwell and Scotty Riggs/Anton need to return. Either that or Vicious and Delicious (Bagwell and Scott Norton)
3. Sign DDP with the bodyguard (Maxx)
4. Sign Jim Powers as a preliminary wrestler
5. Have Tony Schivone rounding out a three man announce team
6. Reform the Dungeon of Doom
7. Somehow bring in Arn Anderson to help out Ric Flair
8. Get the Total Package Lex Luger to manage someone; maybe Maple Leaf Muscle if he gets to ever return
9. TNA Impact needs a nick name like "the Mother Ship" if you will
10. There aren't any luchadors in TNA, so sign the chairman La Parka for a one time appearance
That's just ten things. There are so many things TNA could do to really be retro, and that would be so much better than the watered down retro that they are giving us now.

It's a shame that AJ Styles is probably going to be at least partially blamed for this, since he's the champion and "not drawing well". But he's a weak champion only because TNA has made him weak by giving him a gimmick that doesn't fit him. When he was AJ Styles, babyface champ, he drew TNA's highest rating ever against Kurt Angle. He was over, and beloved by the TNA fans. Why fix something that wasn't broken?
I just got done reading Jericho's book, and a lot of the stuff that he describes about WCW look to be happening here. I've got a lot of respect for Eric Bischoff, but he doesn't seem to have the ability to reign in the troops under one vision. TNA desperately needs Paul E.
BTW, could they really call the dvd set "the Rise and Fall" if the company never really rose?

I think people are pushing the panic button too fast here. I mean, they have only been on Monday nights for TWO WEEKS. The original Monday Night Wars took a couple of years before it got going. Granted, there should have been a better thought process in this move, but give it time people.
One thing that doesn't help TNA is that Raw is LIVE and TNA is not. Anybody with a computer can just read the Impact spoilers on the internet to find out what happens and then watch WWE. That's what I did on Monday.
Ironically enough, one of the things that made WCW able to compete was that Eric Bischoff would announce Raw's results an hour before Raw started. Viewers then continued to watch Nitro when Raw went on the air because they knew what happened. TNA will never be able to compete with the WWE unless it's LIVE, thanks to the internet.

"The original Monday Night Wars took a couple of years before it got going."
That's not true at all.
Nitro beat Raw in the ratings the first week they went head-to-head, then for the next 8 months, the two shows traded ratings victories until WCW pulled ahead with the NWO angle.
There's no comparsion between Nitro and Impact because Nitro was a threat from day one.
