Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam vs. Beer Money highlights entertaining TNA Impact

Monday night’s episode of TNA Impact began with Eric Bischoff playing acoustic guitar in the middle of the ring and ended with a really good main event in which Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam defeated Beer Money. In between, we saw Mick Foley get fired, Matt Morgan send tag team partner Hernandez to the hospital and Chubba Sponge get punched in the face.

In other words, it was a fun show.

The best thing was the Hardy/RDV-Beer Money match. It was great to see Robert Roode and James Storm in a prominent role again, and Hardy and RVD both looked good. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing these two teams wrestle again.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

Bischoff forced allies Foley and Jeff Jarrett to wrestle each other, with the loser having to leave TNA and the winner having to be Bischoff’s (rhymes with “itch). Foley was the lucky one – he lost. My guess is that Mick Foley is gone but Cactus Jack will show up in time for the Lockdown pay-per-view on April 18, maybe as the result of Hulk Hogan over-ruling Bischoff. Perhaps as a foreshadowing, Foley did Cactus Jack’s trademark “bang-bang!” after punching TNA’s resident annoying crony/shock jock in the nose on his way out the door. It looked as if Foley really connected with the blow to Chubba’s mug. Did I mark out? You betcha, brother. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that taking the punch was an initiation of sorts that Chubba had to pass in order to get more of a presence on the show. I hope I’m wrong about that. ...

The Foley-Jarrett match was better than you’d think and it was compelling because of the stipulations and the fact that Beer Money were the special referees. It was kind of funny that the graphic under Foley’s name said “3-time world champion.” So they’re not counting his TNA title reign? ...

Bischoff playing guitar while sitting in the ring with a spotlight on him was certainly a unique way to kick off the show. I’m pretty sure Bischoff wasn’t really playing, as they shot close-ups of the player’s hands but only showed Bischoff from behind and close-ups of his face. Uou couldn’t tell if he was really playing or just faking it. ...

Jarrett was way over as a babyface when he came out to confront Bischoff, and he got a huge pop when he nailed Bischoff over the head with the guitar. ...

Morgan got a lot of heel heat during his match with Hernandez, especially when he delivered the Carbon Footprint while Hernandez’s head was pressed up against the ring post. It looks as if Morgan is about to get the mega-push that he deserves. ...

It would have been nice if TNA had announced at the beginning of the show – or at least early in it – that the tag team champions were wrestling each other. It was the next-to-last match on the show. ...

To get across the fact that the injury to Hernandez was “real,” Homicide, a heel who had been on the outs with Hernandez after LAX broke up, came out acting all concerned. Taz referred to Homicide as “Hernandez’s best friend.” ...

The segment that involved Hogan, Abyss, Ric Flair, A.J. Styles, Sting and “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero (did I forget anybody?) was pretty heated. Flair was great on the mic and he had me laughing out loud when he was trying to escape in his wheelchair from Hogan. By the way, does anyone remember when fans used to refer to WCW as “Wheelchair Wrestling” during the original Monday Night War because a lot of WCW’s top stars were in their 40s? Now a lot of those same guys are in TNA. ...

Abyss cut a promo in which he said that he hoped Styles and Flair stayed back at the hotel and weren’t going to show up. He said this, of course, after Flair and Styles had already been shown on camera pulling up at the studio in the “Orlando Stripperama” van. ...

Since Hardy pinned Styles last week, shouldn’t he be in line for a shot at the TNA world title, perhaps against the winner of Styles’ title defense against Dinero at Lockdown? ...

Hogan to Bischoff: “We’re here to move this company forward, and we’re doing it.” I guess he hasn’t seen the ratings recently. ...

I was surprised that TNA showed the ridiculous post-match slapstick routine that ended Sunday’s Destination X pay-per-view. It would have been wiser to just pretend it never happened. ...

The eight-woman tag team match that saw The Beautiful People and Daffney defeat Tara, Angelina Love, Sarita and Taylor Wilde was fun. Daffney scored the winning pinfall on women’s champion Tara, and it was announced that they will face each other next week in a First Blood match. I’m not really into watching women blade, and I don’t think I’m in the minority on that one. I am really glad to see Daffney in a title program, though. I think she’s going to end up being a popular babyface at some point. ...

Rob Terry, whose limitations are being hidden by having him win quick squash matches – including one on this show against Tomko – is starting to get over. Speaking of Tomko, it’s hard to believe he was on the verge of becoming a breakout star in TNA a couple years ago. ...

Is Desmond Wolfe pimping out Chelsea to Flair? ...

It was announced during the show that Impact will not be replayed Thursday. Of course, that’s what they said last week, too. ...

OK, let me get this straight: Hardy, RVD, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman are all going to be in the ring at the same time next week? Think there will be a lot of high spots?

Talk about going from one extreme to the other. We finish with a great match between Hardy/RVD and Beer Money and then we're told Hardy/RVD will be teamed with Young vs Hall/Nash/Waltman. Yuch! Are they pulling names out of a hat? Just when you think TNA might be hitting stride, they stumble.
How about Hall/Nash/Waltman vs Young/the Dudleys and put Hardy/RVD against anyone with mobility? It's not rocket science. Hardy/RVD appear to have great chemistry. The only way to waste them is to ground them. Maybe Hogan doesn't want them to share his spotlight.
Flair was hysterical in the wheelchair, but unfortunately that whole Hogan/Abyss angle is forcing me to watch more WWE.
And, don't even get me started on those sickening hamburger commercials that seemed to air between every match. Maybe the TNA writers are scripting BK's tv spots.

Way too much Bischoff. It's ridiculous. I had trouble caring about this Bischoff/Foley/JJ storyline. It really was a snoozer, particularly compared to the WrestleMania feuds. But it all led to Bubba getting socked in the face so it was worth the time.

Great main event, wish it went longer. Now these are the type of matches that will steal viewers from RAW! But we had to see that bizarre opening sequence of Bischoff strumming a guitar. Wonder how many people changed the channel to RAW after witnessing that.

That Matt Morgan spot on Hernandez looked nasty. Nice job by the camera crew to make it look as strong as possible.

What does TNA see in Rob Terry? Anybody? Are they trying to brag that they have no Wellness Policy like their competitors up north?

And is it safe to say that Abyss is the Hornswoggle of TNA? Which is a more annoying character?

"To get across the fact that the injury to Hernandez was “real,” Homicide, a heel who had been on the outs with Hernandez after LAX broke up, came out acting all concerned. Taz referred to Homicide as “Hernandez’s best friend.” ..."

I think this is more of a sign of the flip-floppy booking that Russo has been known for.

I'm not sure if this is brilliant, idiotic, or somewhere in between: Eric Bischoff admits that the reason that he's got a problem with Jeff Jarrett is because Jarrett offends him as a guitar player. Well, at least it's different....

Better show this week, but AJ is still a bad fit for the "new Flair" role. When he was comically flopping around in the ring between the faces, it was sad to watch. He just doesn't have the skill set for this.

What a frustrating wrestling company TNA is.....One week they put on the absolute worst TV show possible and then one week later they put on one of the BEST. I fast forwarded nearly all of the first hour, but the second hour was truly fantastic!

As a new TNA watcher, I have no idea what the move Beer Money did to RVD is called (some type of combo DDT), but it looked great and pretty dangerous as well. That was a great match with Beer Money, RVD and Hardy. They gotta keep Matt off the mic - painful to say the least, but a great wrestler.

If they can keep those type of matches going, add some storyline to the Division X wrestlers and keep the older wrestlers to a minimum, they could really begin to draw an audience.

One question - who was the fat guy who ate Tomko and then wore his skin during the match?

Kevin;
Having now seen the rating come in for the week (especially seeing that the 'E actually DROPPED in ratings the week prior to WRESTLEMANIA) do you think TNA might actually be starting to climb out of the basement; albeit slowly??

RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't know. The WWE rating dropped significantly, but the TNA rating hardly changed.

TNA-Impact should amend its opening credits to include:
Featuring
D'Angelo Dinero
as
"Virgil"

AND

Rob Van Dam
as
"The Beaver"

Say what? Impact doesn't have opening credits?
Oh.....Nevermind.

OK, let me get this straight: Hardy, RVD, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman are all going to be in the ring at the same time next week? Think there will be a lot of high spots?"

No need to turn on the fog machine before their entrances start...

It looked as if Foley really connected with the blow to Chubba’s mug. Did I mark out? You betcha, brother...

I did the same thing. That punch looked legit and I loved it.

I am really enjoying the overall TNA product even more now. I saw in another column you mentioned all the "negative" reaction Destination X received, and I say they were way off the mark. Sure the ending was ackward with 3 guys falling through the mat, but the matches leading up to the main event were solid. Heck even the main event for what it was, was entertaining.

Umm, they DID announce at the beginning of the show that the tag team champions were wrestling each other.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Did they? OK, I missed it. My bad.

Chubba post a picture of himself after being attended to by EMTs

Boy people really hate this guy based on all the hilarious comments he received.

Enjoy

If the Hernandez injury is a work they went out of their way to make it look legit. Morgan, whispered to the ref, the ref made the X signal which is usually used for legit injuries. Could it be a legit injury or did TNA actually pull off something well? No X division matches, no Angle or Kennedy. It is tough to get all of their players in the two hour format. They are getting killed in the ratings head to head any chance of a 8-11 on Spike with the first hour focused on X division or maybe their own show on Thursdays?

RESPONSE FROM KE: It was a work.

- Is TNA trying to make Rob Terry a squasher like Goldberg was? Don't think that will work.

"OK, let me get this straight: Hardy, RVD, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman are all going to be in the ring at the same time next week? Think there will be a lot of high spots?"

ZING!

VERY entertaining show, two good Monday night shows, the last time I was this entertained on a Monday night was in 2007 when the Steelers scored 35 lst half points against the Ravens on MNF!

Sorry Kev, I couldn't resist! But I think your team is the team to beat in the AFC north this season. Flacco with two legitimate targets could be championship material. And with Ben turning into Pac Man Jones it could be long year!

he is awsome!!!!!!!!

"OK, let me get this straight: Hardy, RVD, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman are all going to be in the ring at the same time next week? Think there will be a lot of high spots?"

They will all probably be "high" before the match. Hey, Yo. Give me a hit.

This is not related to this show, but whatever happened to Samoa Joe? I haven't heard anything since he was shown being kidnapped. I do fast forward sometimes thru parts of the show so I may have missed it if they talked about it.

"High spots"... heh.

Mark it: The official length of the Hardy/RVD/Hall/Waltman match will be 4:20.

I saw absolutely no logic in the Flair/Styles/Sting and Hogan/Abyss/Pope segment. Lights go down, Sting appears, Hogan is cuffed and Abyss is getting beat down. Sting leaves, Pope comes down and unlocks Hogan. Faces beat down the heels. Why didn't Sting come back with the bat? It made his appearance seem pointless. I couldn't go back to the show after that. Kev, you're a smart guy, am I missing something? Admittedly, I caught this segment on a flip back from Raw and haven't rewatched the show yet.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't disagree with you that the segment was all over the place, but the crowd seemed into it. I'll suspend my disbelief and overlook Hogan mysteriously being handcuffed, but my biggest complaint was that Sting didn't destroy Hogan with the bat while he was defenseless.

I've read that Scott Hall has been working out feverishly to get onto shape, did anyone see how he looked in the ring at Destination X? Just curious, not necessarily match quality but Hall's work.

and as far as Tomko goes, I don't even know if he's seen a gym lately. He'd look pretty buff if he were some townie hitting the bars every night but he looks like a joke for a guy that was "on the verge" just a short time ago. No wonder Vince barely kept him around long enough to say hello.

TNA ROCKED Monday night! Great show. The Main Event match was incredibly awesome, the stories felt coherent, and BTLS got PUNCHED IN THE FACE!!! Amazing. :)

@ Dave: Samoa Joe was kidnapped by ninjas...but he just wanted us to think that's what happened. In reality, he's training in their dojo as we speak. Be prepared to start seeing promos for "3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain: Part 2", starring Hulk Hogan as Dave Dragon and Samoa Joe as Lothar Zogg's evil henchman.

What a joke.

TNA just looks SOOOOO fake and contrived.

I don't know if it's just the fact that they do the show in a TV studio that turns me off or not...after all I used to love NWA/WCW on TBS in its heydey from the little studio.

The line with Bischoff saying something about "See if you can find that on a rundown" or whatever he said when Hardy and RVD came out was just ridiculous. OK, Eric, we get it, TNA is soooo unpredictable. Give me a break.

I remember seeing an X Division match on TV a few years ago and thought it was one of the most entertaining things I'd seen in a while - and this is before I got around to actually following wrestling again. I tried watching a few times after and never saw anything like it again. What a shame.

Overall I thought the show was entertaining, some lame spots were mixed in but I thought the good outweighed the bad. The crowd was very energetic all night. The boring chants during the guitar intro was fitting. The match involving the Knockouts was wild with some great spots. There should be some sort of split screen view when the Beautiful People step through the ropes. That way we can see both rear ends!!! I enjoyed the Hogan and Flair segment but I don’t get why we didn’t get more from Sting. Also, if your team is called “Team Hogan” then it makes no sense to have Abyss as your captain. I thought the clothesline on Flair was hilarious. Great spot with the Carbon Footprint, Morgan is in for a push it seems. I’m sick of all the bickering between JJ, Foley and Bischoff. If you hate someone then fire him and get it over with. Who knew asking Jeff to play guitar would put him over the top. He must enjoy cleaning toilets and flipping burgers. Surprisingly, the Foley/JJ match was entertaining and the crowd was hot for both wrestlers. Nice to see Foley rough up Chubba, that guy deserves all the spuds he can get. It looks like they moved the sign plant back a few rows. I wish they would get rid of that guy for good. The main event was solid and displayed that TNA has some major star power on their hands but bringing in EY at the end seemed out of place

O in the tv/chat room I watched this on we had a lot of great names for the RVD / Hardy pairing...

Although with the way Bischoff has been using Beer Money recently I called the match 3 Minute Warning vs Thrillseekers 2010....

And I dunno who was playing the guitar, but that was enthralling. Overall TNA had the better action, but WWE did setup Wrestlemania perfectly.

Finally, both companies need to cut some of these segments 10-15 seconds shorter...between the overacting and the cheesiness, 90% of these segments would be helped being shortened a bit.

I read a poll on a leading web wrestling site indicating a significant majority thought Impact was better than Raw this week, despite Raw being the sendoff edition for the WWE's biggest event, Wrestlemania.

Personally I know that WWE shows in the week before Wretlemania are bloated with redundant promos, so I appreciate having another show to watch when the redundant promos are running.

what will be next for the tna tag belts? best case scenario would be for bischoff to punish morgan by making him defend the belts on his own versus beer money, any thoughts?

You know, after reading the posts, I think TNA may be on to something with Hall/Nash/Waltman vs Hardy/RVD/Young. It could be a Dazed and Confused Match. Each contestant must consume a certain amount of alchol and pot immediately prior to the match. There will be a break every couple of minutes for mandatory bong hits. Last man standing wins. This has huge potential, and I think we have the guys who can pull this off. TNA ratings will go sky...high!

"OK, let me get this straight: Hardy, RVD, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman are all going to be in the ring at the same time next week? Think there will be a lot of high spots?"

Do you think this match will end up as a "Joint on a Pole" match?

So great , A big profit from beer !

russlo warning

maybe theres a reason hogan didnt get hammered with stings bat...

HUGE TWIST!!!

no no wait...

Kevin,I can't believe you allowed that web site about BTLS to go through. I guess you didn't get Vince's PG memo.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I didn't realize it was that bad. Thanks for the alert.

@LarryB....great comment! I was going to post something along those lines. but it was going to be the Meth and Weed Connection vs The Outta Shape Drunkards.

Once again, I didn't see anything special. The opening segment was horrible. Flair looks like an idiot in the wheelchair. Styles is booked to look weak. The Hogan/Abyss segment was bad. So let me get this straight, the lights go out, come back on, Hogan's handcuffed to the ring, Sting's setting on the turnbuckle with the bat and leaves the ring so Styles can get jumped? It was pointless. Foley/Jarrett loser gets fired? So who here doesn't know he'll be back as Cactus Jack? So is Rob Terry supposed to be The British Bulldog or Bautista or The Ultimate Warrior because it looked like he was trying to be all 3. So Daffney and Tara are feuding over a spider now? I remember when the Hart Foundation dog-napped Matilda from the Bulldogs back around WM 3. It was lame then, even lamer with a spider involved. The Hernandez/Morgan segment was good. So was the main event. But let me get this straight also. RVD came in went against Sting and won. Hardy came in with alot of hype. Now they're a tag team that's in a feud with whoever they want to throw them in there with? Eric Young jumps in the ring a just announces that He, Hardy and RVD will take on The Band?? What do Hardy and RVD have to do with any of that? Bad booking. And yes TNA went up in the ratings by 100,000 viewers and WWE went down by 350,000 viewers but the WWE still had about 4 million more viewers and it's obvious those viewer who didn't watch RAW weren't watching Impact.

Great comments, Common Sense. For the 5 or 6 time, I have the same opinion as you. I agree completely with everything you wrote. TNA is just a mess. And for me, absolutely unwatchable at this point.

I MISS WANT YOU RVD AJ STLY !!!???
