« Ratings for Raw, Impact | Main | Quick hits on WWE NXT »

It’s business as usual on Raw

While TNA was pulling out all the stops with blood, heel turns and major stars showing up on Impact Monday night, WWE’s response was to offer nothing out of the ordinary on Raw. I originally thought the Vince McMahon-John Cena main event, which was announced on last week’s show, was booked specifically to counter TNA’s main event that saw Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair on opposite sides of a tag team match, but I’m not so sure that was really the case.

Monday’s episode of Raw wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t at the level of recent shows. The Cena-McMahon bout ended up being a gauntlet match, and the payoff – Batista interfering and costing Cena the match – was pretty predictable.

The best thing on the show was the opening verbal confrontation between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Michaels was great on the mic as always, and The Undertaker ended up doing a decent job after seeming a little off at the beginning of his promo. The story was that Michaels projected so much confidence in his ability to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI that a seed of doubt had been planted in The Undertaker, who had a subtle look of concern on his face. It’s not often that The Undertaker loses his poker face, which is what really made the segment compelling.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

I didn’t view the Cena-McMahon match as a bait-and-switch because I don’t think anyone really believed it would be a straight-up singles match. Batista standing over Cena with the spotlight shining on him was a cool image to end the show with. ...

Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes defeating Randy Orton in a handicap match was the right decision. DiBiase and Rhodes would have no credibility if they couldn’t beat one man – even if that man is Orton. I was surprised the match even took place. I figured DiBiase and Rhodes would jump Orton and lay him out, leading to the handicap match being signed for WrestleMania. It doesn’t look like that match is going to happen since WWE already gave it away. So what are these three going to be doing at WrestleMania? I have a theory.

Orton and Triple H are booked to wrestle each other on Raw next week. I think Sheamus, DiBiase and Rhodes are going to interfere and attack both of them. It will then be announced that the Triple H-Sheamus match at WrestleMania – which was made official on this show – is being replaced by a three-on-two handicap match pitting sworn enemies Triple H and Orton against the three heels. Because of the history between Triple H and Orton, that match would be more compelling than Triple H vs. Sheamus or Orton vs. DiBiase and Rhodes. ...

Triple H cut a good promo on Sheamus. I was surprised that he brought up the fact that he was “crushed” at his first WrestleMania appearance, although he never mentioned The Ultimate Warrior by name. Triple H said that Sheamus had the greatest first year of anyone in the business. Um, what about Kurt Angle, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar? ...

I was pleasantly surprised to see Evan Bourne get the final spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match, which he did by defeating William Regal. Now we know why Bourne has been booked better as of late. ...

With less than three weeks to WrestleMania, Kofi Kingston and Drew McIntyre are the two most prominent guys not yet figured into the equation (I’m not counting Orton, DiBiase and Rhodes). They have to be on the card in some form, don’t they? Then again, Kingston was quickly disposed of by Batista when he tried to aid Cena during the main event. ...

Magician Criss Angel was OK as the guest host. Like most magicians, he made it a point to ask the people participating in his tricks if what they were doing was “predetermined.” Of course they said no, but that’s a tough sell on a show in which everything is predetermined. ...

John Morrison and R-Truth cleaning house on unified WWE tag team champions The Miz and The Big Show was an effective way to give the challengers some credibility as a tag team heading into their title match at WrestleMania. ...

The Miz sarcastically said that The Bushwhackers were more worthy opponents than Morrison and R-Truth. It would have been funnier if he had said The Nasty Boys. ...

I thought Gail Kim may have decapitated Alicia Fox when she jumped from the apron onto Fox’s head, which was sticking through the ropes, during the six-woman tag match. Apparently it looked worse than it was, because Fox seemed to be fine. Eve made WWE Divas champion Maryse tat out, so it looks like there will be a title program between these two. ...

During the gauntlet match, Vladimir Kozlov was the stone-faced guy again rather than the happy-go-lucky guy. I suppose he should just be happy he’s not the future-endeavored guy. ...

I’m really looking forward to next week’s show. Not only is “Stone Cold” Steve Austin the host, but my two favorite performers – Michaels and Chris Jericho – are wrestling each other.

Kev, if you could recall, I predicted last week that it would amazing to see Evan Bourne in the MITB match and him doing the shooting star press from the top of the ladder would be a WM moment. Lawler stole my prediction by saying that same thing....perhaps he reads comments on this blog?

What did Kofi do to lose all of his momentum? They have to use him at Wrestlemania. Where could you see him end up??

Hey Kevin, thanks again for all of the hard work. I really believe that the Orton/Legacy match will be a tag match with Kofi as Orton's partner. Goes with the typical "heel turns face and needs the help of his recent adversary" storyline. Makes perfect sense since Kofi doesn't have anything for 'Mania.

I Think Drew will issue an open challenge to anyone at Mania and put his IC title on the line then Kofi will come out beat him and switch to Smackdown

KEv please tell me your gonna review WWE HEROES #1, the latest try at a wrestling comic. It's looks rediculous!

http://comicattack.net/2010/01/wwehp/

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm actually planning on it. Supposedly it's in the mail.

Eve submitted maryse, which was a good way to put her over strong. Looks like these mondays are going to be a killer for you! Oh well at least tna won't be round for that much longer. Having a guy of stings age be the focus of the show, despite the excellent performance, is pretty scary. A lot of us expected the guy to have retired by now. Taker Stinger for wm27, now that would do some buys!

I think Kofi is this generations Ricky the Dragon Steamboat. I hope the WWE uses Kofi better than they did the Dragon, We know the kid has main event talent he has shown us. So why the deline in his stock? How do you leave him out of the biggest pay per view of the year? He should not only be in the MITB match he should win it. The only thing I can think of is he is being punished for some reason. As for Orton and Legacy, I think the WWE is doing the Babyface turn of Orton all wrong, he would be better served taking some time off then comming back as a baby face. Maybe help an estabished one take on Legacy. The way they are doing the angle now is not helping build the character of Dibiasse or Rhodes. He pumbles them both unless its a double team situation. Why would you do that to two talents that could be huge stars sooner than later?

i guess no one above reads spoilers.

Wonder what kofi will be doing at mania? I think they will extend the money in the bank for the sake of fitting him on.

Couple thoughts:

-I was very disappointed that Cena essentially no-sold the beating he'd just taken when he confronted McMahon before Batista speared him. How hard is it for the guy to look like he's in pain? He keeps taking beatings, then popping up looking fresh as a daisy.

-Did you catch Michael Cole mentioning that Eve is a Rubick's Cube master and enjoys salsa dancing during her match? Way to sell the Divas as serious competition.

-I think McIntyre is going to do a run-in and steal the MITB briefcase, either when everyone is out, or when Christian is about to win. It's so obvious that Christian is the only guy in the match who could legitimately move up to the main event that I think they have to do something. McIntyre steals the briefcase, and he and Christian feud over it for a few months. Sure, that devalues the IC title, but when has that ever stopped the WWE?

smal nitpick, but eve didn't pin maryse. she made her tap- love the blog.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks. I'll fix it.

Am I the only one, who enjoyed that much, the opening segment with HBK and Undertaker.
I think, the creative team made an amazing job on that one. The whole interaction... the fact that Undertaker interfered in last week's match because he's scared and because he really thinks that he can lose at Wrestlemania... and the facial expressions of the two, especially Undertaker's, during it... was pure genius. At the end of it, when HBK left the ring, I was really convinced (!) that he can actually beat the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. Even though we all know that it won't happen, they really succeeded in convincing me, that it can actually happen.
It adds now a completely unexpected twist to their whole feud, and lights a desire in me for their match, that I didn't consider possible before, when the match was primarily announced.
I'm really looking forward to it and I'm counting the days till Wrestlemania. Great stuff.

I knew Borne was going to win MITB match as soon as I found out Regal was the opponent. That type of match is made for high flyers, which Regal is not.

RESPOSNE FROM KE: Just to be clear -- I wasn't surprised Bourne beat Regal, just surprised that he was given a spit in the MITB match.

Been thinking about it for weeks and I think Austin makes himself the guest referee at Wrestlemania in the Hart/McMahon match. Why? Austin will say he hates both men equally and will be a fair ref since he won't care who wins between them.

Are you no longer doing the radio spot on Wednesday afternoons?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Taking a little break. May start it up again at some point.

I don't think this show had anything out of the ordinary on it, which is strange considering this was the starting point of part two of the Monday Night Wars. I still think it was a decent show though.

The verbal confrontation at the start between Michaels and Undertaker was good, but it just seems as if they're saying the same things as they were last year when building their WrestleMania match. I hope that seeing the same build up from last year won't mean we're getting the same match too. It's good how the match has now been made no-DQ, as this will give a whole different style to it.

I love this new role that Orton is playing. His slow development into a babyface suits him better than I thought it would. It was the right call having Legacy beat him, and I agree that the Sheamus/Triple H match should be mixed in with this story at WM, as I don't think that many people are bothered about seeing it as a singles match.

I'm starting to get worried that Kingston and McIntyre will have nothing to do come the weekend of WM. This maybe isn't such a bad thing for McIntyre, as he's only been around for about a year. But I really think Kingston was destined for greatness after his feud with Orton late last year. It'll be such a shame if he's not booked to wrestle at WM in some form, but as the weeks go by it's getting harder and harder to figure out what he could do.

Speaking of wrestlers that deserve a break, I'm so pleased Evan Bourne is in the MITB Ladder Match this year. I always thought his high-flying style would work well in a ladder match.

I know WWE has a tendency to book Cena like he's Superman, but did they really need to have him kick out of three finishing moves before Batista finally came to finish him off? Swagger, Koslov and McIntyre's finishers were all made to look worthless every time Cena flung his shoulder off the mat after each one of them, although I'm not sure Swagger used the gut-wrench powerbomb on him. Still though...

For the first time in so long, I am finally excited about a future guest-host. Having Austin come in to do it is probably the best decision WWE has made in terms of choosing people to host the show. Enough with these Z-list celebrities. At last, we have someone who actual wrestling fans want to see.

I unfortunately didn't DVR this week, just saw it 'live' in passing on the TV, but was it just me, or did it look like Batista/Kingston were about *this close* to a megabotch on that bomb?

How about if Kofi comes out to make the save on your proposed beatdown of Triple H and Orton by Rhodes, DiBiase and Sheamus? Would add another dimension to the match cause Orton will have previous rivalries with his two tag team partners.

Magician Criss Angel was OK as the guest host. Like most magicians, he made it a point to ask the people participating in his tricks if what they were doing was “predetermined.” Of course they said no, but that’s a tough sell on a show in which everything is predetermined. ...

That's exactly what I was thinking. Though Angelhas done those tricks thousands of times and probably could do it on the spot.

Kofi needs to go to SD. He's buried right now. Looking back, his feud vs. Orton didn't do much for either except bury Kofi.

Bourne SSP off the ladder could shoot him up the pecking order, but only if he can get better on the mic. I'd like to see him turn heel and feud with Mysterio. Or maybe have start teaming with Punk. That way he can let Punk do the talking while he gets the exposure.

One more thing. It is a cool idea to have Austin overlook the contract signing. He was a fierce rival with both. I'm not sure how it will go down.
Did/Does he and Hart ever have issues outside the ring? I didn't think so since Austin was so close to Ownen and I remember him being emotional when Owen died.

I thought the HBK-Taker segment was well done, I like the confident Michaels better than the obsessed Michaels. It will be an interesting twist with the match being no DQ. They did everything they could last year so this will give them some more things to play with.

I originally thought Kofi would team with Orton at mania against Legacy but now that you mention it, it would be a cool dynamic with HHH-Orton vs Legacy and Shaemus. HHH and Orton have a recent history of being bitter rivals but they also were apart of Evolution and maybe they could use that connection in the story. I think Kofi would also have a spot to make the teams even but it might be to predictable of a win for the "good" guys. Kofi might be better placed in an Intercontinental Championship match but with no history between the two I don't see that happening so close to WM.

I did like how HHH mentioned his first WM moment was a squash. If there is no tag match, I hope HHH crushes Sheamus in under a minute. Did you notice Warrior in the opening?

Evan Bourne in the MOTB match will make that match even if he dosen't win. I'm glad he is in there.

Batista did a good job again, but, I still think he is better with less talking to show more intensity.

"Triple H said that Sheamus had the greatest first year of anyone in the business. Um, what about Kurt Angle, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar?"...

What about them? They were just stars that actually got over. Did they spot Triple H while he did bench presses in the gym? I don't think so.

Thank you for pointing out Kurt Angle; easily one of the best first years -- if not the best -- in WWE/wrestling.

WOW...that comic book looks HORRIBLE!!! I could maybe understand giving all the wrestler's action figures the same physique so they can re-use the mold, but Matt Hardy does NOT look like He-Man. Or, have abs, for that matter. And the plot looks ludicrous! I thought the old WWF saturday morning cartoon was ridiculous (even when I was a kid!), but this is just wierd...

Really? HHH and Orton vs Sheamus O'Tools(got that name from wedding crashers, and if they team up,im copywriting that group name)thats compelling? We all know that HHH and Orton would win,HHH would dominate most of the match. And at the end he would Pedigree Orton on general principle

Hi Kevin. Once again you summed up Raw pretty much the way I saw it. Just a couple of points. HHH said " The thing is" about 5 times in the one spot. Good to see the NXT guys making appearances keeps it real-ish. I thought Morrison/Truth bit was good and they did a number on Miz/Show which was much needed. They do need a good team name though-what they have come up with so far is pretty lame or is that intentional? I assume that the "legendary" Sheamus has a long term injury as he never wrestles let alone defend his belt. I presume he is a wrestler and not just a pal of HHH. Or is that also an intentional way of getting heat? I'm confused Kev, please enlighten me.

The main event unnecessarily made numerous guys look weak.

I know they wanted to hype up both Cena and the 'back against the wall' scenario but was there really a need for an already beaten down Cena to so easily kick out of the finishers of young stars like McIntyre and Swagger?

And then there's the unnecessary burying of Kofi Kingston by Batista, who swatted him away like he was a real lightweight.

So glad you thought the same thing regarding orton/legacy/HHH and Sheamus at WM. If you hadn't have mentioned it I was planing to pitch it on this article and get your thoughts. Beat me to the punch!

"Wonder what kofi will be doing at mania? I think they will extend the money in the bank for the sake of fitting him on."

That would be nice, Other Rob, but it probably won't happen. I was POSITIVE that Kofi had a world title shot in his future and that if he didn't win the Rumble, he'd win MITB. I'm tremendously disappointed that he likely won't get an opportunity anytime soon.

Looking at the other participants, it seems like Christian's going to win it. I can't say the guy hasn't paid his dues, and think he'd be a good world champ, but I've turned into quite the Kingston mark and really wanted him to have a run. Can't be worse than Sheamus'.

"Kofi needs to go to SD. He's buried right now. Looking back, his feud vs. Orton didn't do much for either except bury Kofi. "

It did make him look good for a while, but in the end he's pretty much right back where he started.

McMahon should NOT have gone over. A blind man could've seen what was coming, and yet they went ahead with it to satisfy that senile old fool's overstuffed ego. The man needs to retire yesterday. He only put himself over because of the Impact main event, and in a typical fit of McPique, he pulls Flair out of the ID montage to replace him with the Ultimate Warrior. One more reason to commit Vince to Bellevue ASAP!

Personally I love the way WM26 is looking - except for the lack of Kofi and the IC belt not being made a big deal on the card. I re-watched a few chapters of the History of the IC belt DVD on the weekend. I miss those matches.

WWE has been dabbling with making the IC belt important for some time now but hasn't followed through. That said, I'm not into Drew McIntyre at all, even less so than Sheaumus. And a few more weeks isn't enough time to make a compelling IC program between Kofi and Drew. If that's what they do, the WM26 match result should point to an ongoing feud, rather than a WM26 footnote.

BTW, I missed some portions of Raw lately - is there any "Big" star being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year? Do you think Randy Savage will ever get there?

Hey guys, you are all missing something about Kingston and McIntyre. I do not think Bret Hart and Vince are able to do a one on one match worthy of the WM card hence Vince will use Drew as partner and Bret will use Kofi as his partner. Kofi will ultimately win it for team Hart which will help put him over some more and McIntyre will gain more Heat by teaming with Vince. That's exactly why they are left out of the card so far. It will be revealed probably on the next show when Steve Austin hosts.

For those worried about Drew McIntyre not being on the WM card go read this weeks Smackdown spoilers. Because of this I think Kofi will make it a perfect 10. Kevin, I definitely agree with you about HHH/Orton vs. Sheamus/DiBiase/Rhodes at Wrestlemania. In a weird twist maybe have HHH turn on Orton during the match and form a new DX/Evolution hybrid with Sheamus, DiBiase & Rhodes. Orton becomes a face but still with an edge to him.

I think Drew McIntyre will get into MitB at the expense of someone else, on the orders of Mr. McMahon, following up on what happened last week.

WWE really needs to figure out how to elevate Kozlov into a main event heel. He doesn't necessarily need to win the championship. He could just be used in fresh programs with HHH and Cena.
