Impact: TNA gives away Jeff Hardy-A.J. Styles match

One of my first thoughts after Jeff Hardy debuted in TNA was that the money match is Hardy versus A.J. Styles. Surprisingly – or maybe not considering it’s nothing new for either TNA or Eric Bischoff – that match was given away for free on Monday night’s episode of Impact.

As someone who never misses Impact but rarely watches TNA pay-per-views, I’m not complaining, but it seems obvious that it would have been better for the company as far as making money – which I think is the object – to build to the match and have it headline a pay-per-view. Oh well.

The match, which went about 10 minutes and resulted in a clean win for Hardy, was good, although I’m not sure it’s a great idea to have the TNA world champion losing so often. Styles has now been pinned by Hardy, Abyss and “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero in the past month.

The other thing that TNA gave away with no buildup was Bischoff getting his head shaved by Mick Foley, although I’m not sure many fans would have paid to see that anyway. I believe this is the third time that Bischoff has had his head shaved on TV. One thing I will say is that Bischoff’s extreme haircut put over the idea that anything can happen on Impact.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

I’m on record as saying that I’m in favor of TNA making blood a part of its product because it differentiates it from WWE, but there is such a thing as overdoing it to the point that it won’t mean anything. Ric Flair came out for the opening segment with hideous-looking wounds on his forehead – the result of his recent massive blade jobs – and within minutes he was wearing the proverbial crimson mask from punching himself in the head. Later in the show, Kurt Angle had blood spurting out of his head after Mr. Anderson attacked him with his medal. ...

I couldn’t believe that Flair told Hardy to “get high on your paint.” It was one thing for CM Punk to bring up Hardy’s past issues with drugs, because at the time it appeared that Hardy had turned himself around, but Hardy currently has drug charges pending, so I’m not sure it’s smart to go there. ...

Hardy kind of flipped out at the end of his promo. What was with that screaming? By the way, he referred to his fans as the “creatures of the night.” Isn’t that what The Undertaker used to call his fans? ...

It was advertised that Hulk Hogan was going to confront Sting about his actions last week, but Sting was jumped by Rob Van Dam before he could say anything. That was disappointing, because I was looking forward to hearing Sting cut a heel promo and explain why he turned. ...

Having The Nasty Boys (especially Brian Knobs) and Scott Hall on the show makes it look low rent. It was painful watching Hall, in street clothes and tennis shoes, moving around the ring in slow motion (that discus punch was just embarrassing). Jimmy Hart, who is 67, can physically do more in the ring at this point than either Knobs or Hall. Hogan constantly says (in the story line) that people in TNA need to earn their spot, it’s a new day and all that, yet he has given jobs to The Nasty Boys, Hall and Chubba. ...

Bischoff confronting Hogan about not telling him that Hardy and RVD had been signed is the strongest hint yet that Bischoff and Hogan are headed for a feud. ...

It was refreshing to hear Bischoff say that he and Hogan were “leading the company” rather than “turning the company around.” ...

It appeared that Angelina Love hit her head hard when Daffney swung her into the ramp. I couldn’t tell if she was selling or if she really was out on her feet. It was scary because Love has suffered multiple concussions in her career. ...

Amazing Red lived up to his name when he did a flip dive off a ladder in the ring onto four guys on the floor. ...

That was a pretty wimpy slap that the Generation Me guy (not sure if it was Max or Jeremy) gave Alex Shelley. Perhaps Sean Waltman should show him how it’s done. ...

I thought it was funny that the childlike monster Abyss was the one driving the car that contained Hogan, Hardy and RVD. Do you think Abyss is wearing the mask in his driver’s license photo? ...

Hogan said that Sting built the company from the ground up. Actually, that would be Jeff Jarrett. ...

Styles is trying so hard to be Flair that he even yelled, “Sit down, fat boy!’ to a guy in the audience. ...

Taz said that Mr. Anderson has consistently been one step ahead of Angle. Did he watch last week’s show? ...

Taz’s commentary was annoying me even more than usual this week. When talking about Dixie Carter being on Twitter during the Team 3D and Brother Runt vs. The Nasty Boys and Hart match, he made some remark about Runt having “tweedle dees and tweedle dums” in his head. As Daffney was about to attack Love with a hammer, instead of using a serious tone, Taz sarcastically said, “Daffney with a hammer’s not a good thing.” He may as well have said, “Wrestling is fake and that’s just a prop.” Taz also said that he was going to make sure he used the word “vintage” in every show. How clever. Michael Cole’s response should be that he’s going to make sure he says “whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa!” in every show whenever someone is about to hit a big move. ...

Shannon Moore said that he represents “the tattooed, the brood and the screwed.” So he represents Randy Orton, Gangrel and Bret Hart?

The episode happened on a Monday, Kev.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks. Old habits die hard. And I need some sleep.

TNA pay per views are just episodes of impact that happen to fall on sundays once a month. TNA has had a storied history of not being concerned about ppv buy rates nearly as much as ratings and that business model could very well be their downdall

Is this the future for Sting? Being beaten about by Hogan and his goons? I think this is Hogan trying to get one over on him, for their run in WCW. Where the fans would always back Sting over Hogan even when Hogan was a face whilst Sting was a heel! Did anyone notice Hogan milk the crowd whilst his goon RVD was jumping Sting from behind! Wow I doubted people when they said Hogan was going to look after his own yellow (pun intended) behind! But seeing this angle unfold and the amount of times the camera pans to Bimbo Brooke I'm convinced that this is Hogan doesn't know best as opposed to T N A! When you factor in Bubba the Scourge of this earth, the Nasty fat boys, Jimmy "the mouth of Hogan" Hart it feels like an episode of Hogan Knows Jack! All we now need is Brutus "I have a very long sleeper hold" Beefhead and the cast is complete! Another thing isn't Taz supposed to be the colour commentator and aren't colour commentators supposed to root for Heels and be biased? Taz to my recollection has done more play-by-play than Mike Tenay. During the Angle-Wolfe matches he would know all the complex moves correcting Tenay every five minuets! I think the best thing would be to bring back West and put him alongside Taz and Tenay a bit like the WCW three man set up! Speaking of commentary, I watched a re-run of an old episode of Impact where Nash and Booker take over commentary. Booker was poor, but Kevin Nash definitely has a future as a colour commentator, what do you think?

Kevin,I posted a couple of weeks back about Saggs and Knobbs working out at the Dundalk Bally's 15-20 years ago, when I was a regular there, but Monday night was my first glimpse of them.Saggs was a little heavier than I had anticipated, and remember they weren't in the best of shape even back then, but OMG Knobbs loked horrible.Even after trying to be prepared after your comments,it was pathetic.I'm 50 and have had 12 surgeries, but I still work out the areas I can,and think I could move around the ring as good as Frankenhall, and a little better than Knobbs. However I must say Jimmy Hart was just as entertaining and lively at 67 as he's always been.Probably in the best shape of the bunch. He still cracks me up.Good guy or bad guy,he will always be one of my favorite characters. And like you I didn't get the Ric Flair punching himself in the head deal at all, much les have of the stuff he said. However it was actually a pretty decent show.Starting to be a little more appealing than the Cena getting jobbed by Bautista week after week after week.

"As someone who never misses Impact but rarely watches TNA pay-per-views,"
Sorry, but I´m curious: why not? A matter of time? And btw, are you following any indy promotion? ROH?

RESPONSE FROK KE: It's mostly a matter of time. I don't get HDNet, but even if I did, I honestly don't know if I'd have time to watch ROH. I do try to keep up on it somewhat on the Internet and by reading The Wrestling Observer

Doesn't VKM own the intellectual property of WCW? If so, wouldn't Scott Hall's use of "Wolfpac" on his shirt infringe on that?

I said this to a couple of friends on twitter, but it's worth a comment here:

"You know why TNA has the new entrance ramp? Because Knobs, Saggs, Flair, Hogan, and Hall can't climb the ring steps."

The Sting segment made no sense to me. Given his past run as a babyface for all of hs career for the most part he shouldn't have been sneak attacked at this point in the storyline. The heel heat needed to be established a little longer. We aren't even sure he is a true heel yet. And if he is a heel shouldn't he have beat down RVD and Hogan to further establish the change? Plus what was up with the long walk down from the catwalk? That was like dead air in the radio biz. And yes seeing the old timers in the ring is horrific. The old gang wishes they could be shadows of their former selves. They are more like sunsets at this point in time. Teh one thing TNA did accomplish from my poitn of view was I thurned over from Raw to see what was goign to happen but as the storylines have gotten ridiculous already AJ really a Ric Flair clone? C'mon guys.

Yeah the Styles/Hardy match reminded me of Goldberg/Hogan on TV in the WCW I days. WCW II (TNA) seems to be doing shock for the sake of shock, which fans will get tired of eventually. I'm all for blood, but if it's done all the time then it looses it's impact.
Impact seems to have all kinds of stories that come from nowhere, which is really annoying. The Beautiful People/Angelina Love rivalry works because of the history, but it is being overused. Daffney as a one-day-only-BP was a good heel move, but do the same knockouts have to wrestle every week? ODB, Wilde, Sarita, Hamada, are great performers but you'd never know that in the Hogan Era.
TNA just isn't working for me right now.

I remember the Generation Me by their hair color. They remind me of a young version of the Hardy Boys, thus Matt = Max and Jeff = Jeremy.

Although annoying at times, Taz did have a great line as Angelina Love was t-boned by the ring post, asking "can that really hurt a girl?"
There was a positive note to the Nasty Boyz appearance. It allowed TNA viewers to turn the channel without missing anything and check out The Big Show vs John Cena. The Nasty Boyz are a quicker tune out than those sickening BK commercials and the disturbing Census propaganda spots.
Totally agree about the blood. Batista's natural cut was much more effective than the self-induced crimson masks of Flair and Angle.
I don't know why, but I still find Scott Hall amusing and I actually look forward to the angles with Nash and him.
Overall, I thought it was a good show, but TNA needs more X-Division time!

I been in the ring with Kurt Angle, and let me tell you, not a good way to spend a Monday night. NOT FUN!

Maybe Shannon Moore said "the brewed," in which case he would represent Stone Cold Steve Austin, not Gangrel.

I heard the TNA ratings were down this week.

Opening with Flair grossing people out for no reason other than shock effect suppose and following up shortly after with those lovable Nasty Boys would not seem to be the way to attract a wider audience in this day and age.

Toss in Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and other old guys who can barely move these days and hey, that's certainly a winning formula.

Also, until TNA gets to the point where it is actually better off than it was before, Eric Bischoff should perhaps think twice about coming across as such a smug and self righteous character.

Hogan is fine as long as he does not dress up and wrestle any more than on occasion.

They need to shed the excess baggage that is muddying the waters quickly and get to the point where the talent that does exist in TNA and just a few clear story lines is the focus.

If they stay the course, Hogan/Bischoff are going to drive this company into the ground in a big fat hurry. (Check the ratings for Monday night.) ADD-inspired booking, too much airtime for old guys who can't wrestle (or walk, for that matter), unsurprising surprises, and yes, the omnipresent blood.

For me, blading got old a long time ago. It's unpleasant, and it's clearly fake. Every time it happens, it's the forehead... hmmm... lots of showy blood on the face, and no actual threat to health. Don't try to sell me blood as somehow more real or authentic or dangerous, because it's not. It's just a geek show. What's next, biting the heads off chickens?

Put the blades away, guys, and come up with a more compelling product.

The first person who posted a comment is an idiot.

- Looks like you're not really happy with what's going on with Jeff on Monday, Kev...I would let it go, the dude is one of the biggest wrestling stars in the world. If he wants to scream let him scream, it would still be better than knobs wrestling or bubba talking.

- Glad Bubba wasn't around this week.

- Flair should be careful before he turns into the Boogeyman

- Love's punches on Daphne were so lame. You could clearly see she was punching the floor and not her.

- Kev: Funny comment on Shannon Moore!

Kevin, do you think Dixie will ever eat crow and make Impact from 8-10 pm Mondays to have the uncontested 8-9 pm hour? TNA has to be so p-ed they spent all that money on Hogan, RVD, Hardy, Flair, etc and have the same rating as before. TNA could probably bring The Rock in and would have the same 1.0 rating.

Taz saying “Daffney with a hammer’s not a good thing” is like him saying, “Wrestling is fake and that’s just a prop”??? Seriously Kev? I know you're a Taz-hater and all, but that is a huge stretch.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Well, that's how I took it. Would Jim Ross have said that? Or would he have said, "My God, she's got a hammer! Someone needs to get that weapon away from her before she does permanent damage to Angelina Love!"

Kevin,
This is off subject. I was wondering if you are still doing your weekly segments on the radio? I listen over the net and have not heard you for the last few weeks. Great blog.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Taking a break from the radio spot. May go back to doing it at some point.

Impact was too damned chaotic this week. Nearly every match turned into a free-for-all brawl. It got tiring.

It appears Bischoff hasn't learned very much since WCW. Hogan and Hart was given away for free back then.

I think a build for Hardy and Styles would have captivated the fans more.

My recent disgust with WWE has also affected my TNA viewing habits, so I'll keep it short. I like the ramp; I like in in WCW in the mid-90s, I like it now. Kevin, with RVD now in TNA, is there any buzz about them bringing in the Ultimate Warrior? I saw a video a while back with RVD talking about how the two were training together. I thought it was an odd pair, but RVD seemed like he was enjoying their relationship.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I hope that doesn't happen.

Eck,

The Shannon Moore joke was ****3/4 stars.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I take that as a huge compliment because you're not easily impressed by my attempts at humor.

I'm sure Flair did a similar promo where he had a plaster on his forehead and he punched himself in the wound until it bled again in WWE. The guy is pathetic. I've never been a fan of his (though I won't deny that he has been massively successful in the past) but he's just obsessed with bleeding. I wonder if he goes to give blood and says "No doc, don't take it from my arm, just punch me in the forehead a few times"

WWE could actually learn from TNA when it comes to their X Division. If WWE would just bring back the cruiserweight title they would be using some of the talent that they neglect. Guys like Chavo, Carlito, Evan Bourne, and Primo could finally be taken seriously and win (Oh I forgot about Yoshi Tatsu) What a crazy concept, I'm sure I'm the first and certainly will be last person to ever think of this idea.

Who cares?
TNA is history..57 gold/talk.com will take over from Panda......with help from legends like Fund ....a new era begins soon.

Hogan and Bischoff are going to kill TNA, plain and simple. They haven't done anything but bring back old timers and try to have more matches. If they don't leave the company, TNA has no chance in surviving.

Comment of the week?

RVD, the guy that could have helped bring in ratings, is already an after thought in TNA. Last weeks beating destroyed the magic, and this weeks revenge was poor because RVD was just setting Sting up for Hogan.

In other words, Hogan was the center of attention.

Any heat RVD has generated so far has gone directly to Hogan both nights. How silly is that? RVD reduced to bodyguard status at best. I don't even think that Sting and RVD will have another match.

I honestly thought one of the Nasty Boys had died a few years back. After watching some of their recent matches I'm not sure I was wrong!

I'm not an expert on TNA, but I'm pretty sure that Jeff Jarrett and his dad did not intend on TNA being used to stroke Hogan's ego and as a forum to display Hogan's struggles over the past few years. Hogan has been successful in taking a lot of the focus off of wrestling and drawing the focus on his daughter Brooke and his own cult of personality. I for one am not interested in watching segments where Hogan is struggling with the question over whether he should wrestle again or not. Who cares (by the way, the answer is "NO")? I want to see Kazarian hit the Flux Capacitor on someone! The more time spent on Hogan is less time spent on A.J. Styles and everybody else that makes that promotion worth watching. TNA right now reminds me of when WWE shoved the McMahon Family soap opera down our throats week after week. Hogan's material is irrelevant and only serves to satisfy his own vanity. Dixie Carter should just change the name of the promotion to "Hulkamania".

Full credit must go to the ring crew for presenting a ring that survived a Knobs/Bubba interlude.
Watching it I honestly expected (and secretly hoped) to see an unplanned 'Bam Bam' moment.
