Hulk Hogan hints Rob Van Dam has signed with TNA (with video)

Hulk Hogan intimated on a radio show this morning that Rob Van Dam, one of pro wrestling’s top free agents, has signed with TNA.

Hogan, who appeared on the Jim Kerr Rock and Roll Morning Show in New York with Jimmy Hart, said that he heard Wednesday night about a major name signing with the company that Hart didn’t even know about, and he then did RVD’s trademark thumb-point. Hogan also mentioned Jeff Hardy’s name as one of the “young kids” in TNA.

I’m surprised that Hogan would reveal the signing instead of having RVD make an unannounced appearance on Impact Monday night for shock value. While I don’t think Van Dam himself is a huge difference-maker as far as drawing ratings, he is a valuable addition to TNA’s roster.

Van Dam has made it clear in numerous interviews since leaving WWE in 2007 that he has no desire to work full-time again for WWE because of the grinding schedule, so going to TNA – where the schedule is lighter – makes sense. Plus, RVD has made no secret of his marijuana use, and in WWE there is a $2,500 fine for testing positive for the drug. TNA’s drug testing policy is regarded as much more lax.

Kev, he didn't say who it was over the air. Hogan just gave Jimmy Hart the sign. Did Hogan know that the radio show was being taped?

I think that his comment was to make people want to turn in to see who "the major signing" was and not give it away or Hogan, being the egomaniac that he is, would have said Van Dam's name over the air.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I would hope a pro like Hogan would know that there was a camera in the studio.

Yes!!!

RVD IS Mr. Monday Night. right?

That's a homerun for TNA as far as I am concerned.

I'm a big RVD mark and am anxious to see what he can do these days in an arena outside WWE.

"I’m surprised that Hogan would reveal the signing instead of having RVD make an unannounced appearance on Impact Monday night for shock value."

I'm not as surprised. Impact won't have an extra hour prior to Raw like they did on January 4th to build an audience and steal away Raw viewers, and besides, they need to drum up as much hype and attention as possible in advance for this show.

Yeah, I read it today, too. If he would've signed with WWE, I would've been excited about that, but with TNA, I couldn't care less. When Hogan and Bischoff signed with TNA, I thought to myself: "Finally, we'll get some competition and action", but they just confirmed to everybody that they and Vince Russo are the biggest morons.

I don't think either, that RVD's signing will make a big difference for TNA, even though a possible match with Jeff Hardy (maybe a rehash of their great ladder matches in 2001-2002) or AJ Styles would be great.

In my opinion, this move will only harm RVD's career and is a major step back for him, to be a part of the trainwreck, that TNA is.

Gee, I wonder which Ho'gan crony will give up his TV time? After all TNA only runs 5 wrestling matches in their 2 hour show.

Despite this set up "leak" (TNA officials are "reportedly fuming mad"), I expect Van Dam to join the rest of the under the age of 40 flotsam and jetsam from the shipwreck known as TNA 2010.

Hogan's veiled reveal makes perfect sense to me. People say they like to be surprised, but marketing-wise that isn't always true. Movie studios have found out that movies with trailers that tell the story of the movie do better at the box office. Certain groups of hardcore fans may prefer not be spoiled, but the majority of the American audience likes to know what they are going to see. If RVD shows up, it's still going to be a fun moment since it wasn't 100% confirmed. Who knows? Maybe the rumors will get some WWE fans to flip back and forth, which is a good starting point for TNA (if they can put on a great show, that is; the quality of recent Impact episodes has varied widely).

You know its funny, you can sit back and see the slow sinking of TNA...

The wrestlers that they have brought in are surely taking up a major chunk of change... Think about it, Hogan, Flair, Hardy, Bischoff, Jimmy Hart, Van Dam, Waltman, Hall, Beastly Boys (pun intended), Anderson, Foley without really releasing any top name. That's alot of money being thrown around...

And what has ever went to the top when Hogan, Bischoff, Hart, et al have ran things? Its usually "one & done" with these guys...

And now going head to head on Monday night...

TNA has just put all their eggs in one basket and its make or break.

He might not have realized that they were filming and going to release it on the internet. He might have thought it was a strictly radio interview and so any gestures he made wouldn't be caught.

What a moron Hogan is !!!! No need to watch TNA now to see what "surprises" they have in store - the cat is out of the bag... I do understand they are on the radio but HELLO there is a camera pointing right at you .. Hogan is the biggest joke in the world next to Jimmy Hart and Eric Bischoff .. TNA will be bankrupt and out of business by the end of 2010.. you can take that to the bank BROTHER

Indeed? Well, Hogan once intimated that the "ultimate surprise" would appear at some WCW pay-per-view, and it turned out to be not the The Ultimate Warrior, but The Renegade. Therefore, don't be surprised if Paul Burchill, not RVD, turns out to be the hot free agent. Renegade, Ripper, it's all the same to Hogan.

"TNA’s drug testing policy is regarded as much more lax". Well considering 25% of TNA's roster tested positive for some kind of drug last October, this is an understatment. I've always liked RVD, but now him and Brian Kendrick can form a tag team called The Burn-Outs.

"RESPONSE FROM KE: I would hope a pro like Hogan would know that there was a camera in the studio."

Yes, I too find it shocking -- and appalling! -- that a 57-year-old man who spent the better part of his adult life taking bumps had a momentary lapse in judgment on a morning radio show at a time of day when I usually can't figure out how to make a decent cup of coffee.

Letting the cat out of the bag is the right thing to do. Fans that want to see RVD will make sure they tune in.

RVD really does embody the spirit of ECW.

Great for a short period of time, but otherwise overrated.

I know the Internet Wrestling Community code dictates that one cannot speak kindly of Hulk Hogan, Triple H, or Vince McMahon, and that one must bow down in undying support to the The Daniel Bryans, Paul Heymans (after he's worn out HIS welcome) and RVD's of the world, but I'm going to act as the heel in this situation.

Rob Van Dam is good, not great. Impressive, not breathtaking. Solid, not legendary. He is the shining personification of the very fact that absence makes the heart grow fonder as many fans have clamored for his art-imitating-life gesture of pointing his thumbs to himself.

Perhaps Van Dam's prolonged absence has made the hearts of wrestling smarks grow too fond.

But not this one.

Van Dam is not the type of guy you want to be building a wrestling company around. Van Dam is self-absorbed, wants the company to work around HIS schedule (which in all fairness may or may not be a good thing), and isn't quite the world championship material that many diehard ECW apologists will lead you to believe he is (remember what happened when The WWE finally made the mistake of listening to diehard fans and pulled the trigger on an RVD title run? I do)

In an interview that basically flew under the radar, RVME recently said that he is not interested in going to work for TNA if it involves him putting over lesser named talent, such as Christopher Daniels, as he has 'beat' the likes of The Big Show, The Rock, and Steve Austin.

Gee, Rob, what if Austin, Rock, and Show had that same mentality when you came to The WWF after ECW had folded? Does that thought even cross your mind? No, of course not, because you're R-V-ME.

Van Dam's me-first attitude is the last thing that a fledgling company like TNA needs in its locker room. Many are fooled by his laid-back, 'it's all good' demeanor but I know the truth. That Rob Van Dam, while talented and a good hand to have on any mainstream wrestling program, is the same self-absorbed gloryhound that all team-first companies should work to avoid.

Good luck with the RVME experience, TNA. Mind you, TNA is the same company that greenlighted a Nasty Boy's reunion tour.

You'd better find some talent 'worthy' of beating RVD because I just don't see many names on that roster that RVD would lay down for. No, not even A.J. Styles. I mean who is A.J. Styles after all? Has HE beaten The Big Show?

I think that this is great, IF it is what RVD truely wants!! I love watching RVD and will watch wherever he goes to. I think that Hogan is a little strange for hinting at this signing, and when it came to all those old and crusty wrestlers... he kept it quiet... like it was something incredible! RVD deserves alot better and I cant wait to see him back on our screens, here in the UK. xx

I think he might be a great addition to TNA. But what I feel sad about is, they don't have enough tv time for their original TNA wrestling talent and yet they keep on signing wrestlers who have left this business years ago.

Say what you want to about TNA,but ever since Hogan took over TNA is now the place to be. Remember Hardy and Van Dam had a choice where they wanted to work,in my opinion that is making a major statement. Thankyou Hogan for making a great promotion evan ten times better and giving the fans what they wanted for 10 years a Monday Night War part 2. It is great time to be a fan!

RVD is overrated. Not to say I don't like the guy as a performer (In all reality I'm a bit of a RVD mark), but when it comes to guys who do crazy sh**, TNA already has its share of them-- x-division anyone? Not only are they high flying, but most of them have better technical skills (Alex Shelley comes to mind) than RVD. Let's all say it again, people: TNA needs to focus on the talent they already have. I wonder how many times it has to be said before TNA finally gets it...

RVD is the Jim Brown/ Gale Sayers of wrestling. Both Hall of Fame players that cut short their careers. One by choice, and the other by injury.

Rob is so talented that he doesn't have to care about getting caught up in the politics/kissing a-- like a HHH or Big Show. He performs on his terms, and so did Jim Brown.

Football needed Jim Brown more than he needed it. Same with RVD. Was he selfish? Of course.

Does it take away the fact he was a one of the most talented players if not the best ever. No.

Just like Brown, anybody watching RVD doing his crazy spots, would say that guy is unbelievable and unstoppable.

I'm stoked to see RVD out getting back into the ring. I'd brather see him then the tired a-- Hogan, Flair, HBK, Taker, Nasty Boys, Double J, HHH, and Big Show anyday. I hope all of these guys retire asap and stay in retirement.

If TNA gets RVD, you have to wonder who could be next. I'd love to see Austin cut some promos on Hogan. Imagine Austin ad-libbing on Hogan; that would be so awesome. That would be a fun war of words to say the least.

All I know is that they can get RVD 4:20 to put down his pipe for a minute, maybe Austin might cut down from a 12-pack to a six-pack.

Bignasty247, I probably hold RVD in a little higher regard than you seem to as a performer (RVD-Jerry Lynn is one of my favorite feuds ever because the matches were AMAZING). If I set aside this bias, though, I can see that there is some truth in your comment. I don't have any illusions that RVD is a legendary main eventer or that he is a humble, great guy. Still, I hope that he can be convinced to give a little because a back and forth feud with AJ Styles would be a spectacular show.
