Edge orders another round of spears on Smackdown

It’s not exactly sweeping the WWE Universe yet, but there’s a new chant in WWE, and it’s a heck of a lot better than “What?”

As part of Edge’s transformation from conniving heel to cool babyface, he is trying to get the crowd into his finisher by having them yell “Spear! Spear! Spear!” When he tried to get the chant going during his show-opening confrontation with The Big Show on Friday night’s episode of Smackdown, the response wasn’t overly enthusiastic. But after Edge speared Big Show to win the main event and then hit the move on Chris Jericho in the post-match run-in, the spear cheer was in gear.

I thought this was the week that Jericho would exact some revenge on Edge, but the No. 1 contender got the better of the world heavyweight champion again. Jericho still has three more weeks to administer a beat-down on Edge to get some heat on him before their match at WrestleMania XXVI on March 28.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

The verbal exchange between Edge and Big Show was nothing special, but I think I’ve gotten spoiled with all the good promo work in WWE lately. On a side note, I’m surprised that Edge and his “former wife” Vickie Guerrero haven’t had any interaction since his return, even if it was just them passing each other in the hallway. ...

There was another upset in the Money in the Bank ladder match qualifying, as Matt Hardy pinned Intercontinental champion Drew McIntyre. Yes, I do consider that an upset considering their respective pushes. I really thought it was a lock that McIntyre was going to win. There is still one spot open for the MITB match, and I think McIntyre is going to get it. ...

I didn’t like the angle in which Vince McMahon erased McIntyre’s loss to Kane last week from the record book and decreed that McIntyre was still undefeated. I know it’s supposed to get heat on McIntyre, but I think it’s just stupid. I’m guessing that McIntyre’s loss to Hardy is going to be stricken from McIntyre’s record as well. ...

The question of what John Morrison and R-Truth will be doing at WrestleMania was answered, as they won a triple threat tag team match over Cryme Tyme and The Hart Dynasty to earn a shot against WWE unified tag team champions The Miz and Big Show on the pay-per-view. I’m glad that Morrison and R-Truth are going to be on the card, but I’m surprised that Morrison isn’t in a singles match or the MITB ladder match. ...

Morrison busted out some cool breakdance moves after the match. I seem to remember him breakdancing when he was auditioning for Tough Enough years ago. ...

The Shelton Benjamin-Dolph Ziggler match (won by Benjamin) and Rey Mysterio-Luke Gallows match (won by Mysterio) were both good. ...

Ezekiel Jackson looked like a real monster in his squash of Jimmy Wang Yang. I wish that WWE would have kept Jackson with William Regal. ...

The spinning bump that Yang took after a failed cross-body block on Jackson was awesome. Yang rarely wins but he still is a valuable member of the roster because he does a great job of making his opponents look good. With that bump, for example, all Jackson had to do was stand there and let Yang take care of the rest. ...

Tiffany has gone from the world’s hottest general manager to the world’s hottest baby-sitter. Whatever gets her on TV is fine with me. I thought for sure that either CM Punk or Serena were going to terrorize Mysterio’s young daughter and Tiffany while Mysterio was busy wrestling Gallows, but it didn’t happen. ...

In talking about Edge, Matt Striker said, “Though his mind is not for rent, don’t put him down as arrogant.” I’m not sure how that relates to Edge, but props to Striker for quoting from a song by one of my favorite bands, Rush.

For the third week in a row, both Jericho and Punk got outsmarted by their respective opponents. At this rate, no one's going to believe that Jericho or Punk has even the slightest chance of winning.

I'm not much of a fan of throwing a tag team together (Morrison and R-Truth) and letting them get a shot at the tag belts at the year's biggest show. I'd much rather it go to two that regularly work as a team, ie Hart Dynasty.

Things sure have changed a lot since the 80's when there was an overflow of good tag teams. Do you think that it's because each superstar is seeking the big singles push and payoff?

Both Edge and Rush are from Toronto, but other than that I got nothing.

Totally right the opening verbal exchange was "nothing special"...

The spear chant is annoying & sounds too forced. And nowhere as entertaining as when it sounded like puberty decided to hit Tony Chimel in the middle of announcing Edge..."the Rated R s-OO-OOP-erstar." The "pieces of crap like you for breakfast" line...a 5 year old knew what response was coming next. Jeez is the WWE family friendly version of being a Rated R superstar being being Adam Sandler?

Six months ago, had anyone told me that a bald girl would distract me from a CM Punk promo, I would have thought that they had taken liberties with their prescription medication. Serena looked pretty good last night.

I think The WWE needs to pair Tiffany with Drew McIntyre. The two are to be wed in real life, and with McIntyre on a losing streak, Tiffany's managerial influence could help him get on the right track. She was a GM on ECW so she will come in bringing some storyline credibility. Hopefully they make quick work of this angle where she's playing with Mysterio's kid.

Truth & Morrison is at least better than Hardy & Khali. Wouldn't Kane have been mad that his win got reversed?

Striker has said he is a Rush fan in an interview with WWE.com a year or so ago

I have Kingston getting the last spot, dollars to doughnuts. I think he'll win it too.

I know now how to annoy people from now on whenever they get on my nerves. I'll just finish my sentences with "SPEAR" and everything will be juuuuuuuuuuuuust peachy.

I'm glad the tag belts are in the spotlight at WM but having R-Truth and Morrison get a shot isn't what I had in mind. Cryme Tyme or THD would have been a much better choice. I'm not a fan of shoving two guys together to make a tag-team. That seems to be the way things are done now though because the tag champs were not a tag-team two months ago either. I like Morrison and R-Truth but as a team it kinda takes the spotlight off them as singles stars which is why they broke up Miz and Morrison in the first place. I wonder if this will get the pre-WM treatment like last year.

I thought McIntyre was going to win as well. Hardy would be great in this match but not this Hardy. Matt obviously loves the business and is good at what he does but I think he gets the pop he does because he is related to Jeff.

Maybe McIntyre would put the belt on the line to get into the match. The winner would become Intercontinental Champ as well as MOTB winner. Other than that I think Kofi is the only other one who should be in the MOTB. He could pull off some good spots and he deserves to be in the running for a world title. Other than Ziggler and Christian I don't see any of the guys in the match getting a serious run for a world title.

Can Paul Heyman sue WWE for transforming "Gore Gore Gore" to "Spear, Spear , Spear"? How creative!

Gore Gore Gore is better.

Punk looks stupid trying to deliver a GTS in bad spots. I think fans are a lot more educated regarding effective fighting technique these days and wrestlers who want to get over should appear a bit smarter about how they attack people rather than always going for the same showy moves.

Sad how Wang Yang does all the work and his opponents get the push! I guess its a living!

no more "spear" chants please!

It's illegal for a Canadian to not like Rush.

Bradley, I'm not sure if Kevin will concur, but in response to your question, I'm fairly certain the big decrease in tag team wrestling in WWE is a purely financial decision on Vince's part. It is cheaper to pay two guys to wrestle a match than it is to pay four guys to wrestle a match.
It's too bad. I miss the days when the tag team field was loaded with contenders.

I might just be imagining things, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the beginning of a push for Shelton Benjamin. His career is starting to look like Edge's, and this is the point in Edge's career when he had a big push. I'm going with a huge upset, picking Shelton to win MITB.

Just got back from a house show w/ the Smackdown roster. Here were the matches.

R-Truth def. Dolf Ziggler--great match, very impressed w/ Ziggler. Those 2 worked real well together.

Khali def. Mike Knox--sloppy, but Knox did good carrying Khali. It seemed that Knox is just happy he didn't get released.

Goldust def. dreadlocked guy w/ surfer music. Goldust then got jumped by the Hart Dynasty on the way backstage.

Hart Dynasty def Jimmy Wang Yang and Slam Master J

John Morrison def. Luke Gallows--The Straight Edge society need to be careful, almost looked like they were doing the nazi salute.

Beth Phoenix and Tiffany def. Layla and Natalia. I guess Michelle McCool was with the Undertaker tonight. It started with Tiffany talking, then Natalia and Layla grabbed her. Phoenix got in and cleared the ring, challenged to a tag match. Beth was acting like super face, clapping and trying to get the crowd into the match, which they were. I hope WWE doesn't do that to her, I like her as a heel or tweener. I was also hoping Natalia and Beth would go at it, but it was mostly Tiffany getting beat until Beth got in for the finish.

Kane and Drew Macintire to a double count out for the IC championship. Not a bad match but took to long to start because Macintire stalled.

Jackson def. Matt Hardy--Hardy looked so out of shape and slow. Jackson did nice, but no one was interested.

Fatal 4 way for World Title Jericho, Edge, Rey, Punk. Exciting, Great promos by Punk, Edge, and Jericho, Great acrobatics by Rey. More like a tag match, Jericho and Punk were buddies as were Rey and Edge. Just fun to watch those four go at it together.

OK now here's my gripe. This house show was at Washington State University, it's been on the top 25 party school list several times. I was disgusted with how some of these lowlife frat boys were acting with children next to them. F Word chants all night, when the women wrestled there were [vulgar] chants. And they all dressed like stereotypical red necks and trailor trash. I mean it was like a costume party. Normally I wouldn't mind, it is after all a college notorious for partying. But kids were all over the place, wanting to see a family event. My kids were there too and I had to tell them to ignore those savages. I thought the Cena/RVD match was bad but acceptable because it was an ECW show, but kids weren't there. Kids were here tonight and I know I was not the only one appalled.

I was so annoyed by "Vince striking McIntyre's loss" that I turned off my television. Between that and the stopping of the Kofi-Chavo match on Thursday because Chavo got a strawberry on his forehead, WWE is trying its hardest to alienate anyone who isn't either a complete moron or under the age of twelve. I'm not saying we have to return to the Attitude Era, but WWE needs to shape up or they run the risk of driving their core fan base away.

I'm not a fan of the WM buildups this year; every rivalry is one sided and it's quickly losing my interest. Edge, mysterio, mcMahon, batista are all dominating their opponents.

The best thing for Edge/Y2J would have been when Y2J announced he was never going to be speared again...for him to keep his promise. Foiling Edges every attempt until he hits the one that matters...at wrestlemania. This would tease the fans who'd be dying to see it. At this rate it's killing the move and not going to be as big when he hits it at WM

As for Mcintyre i'm not sure he'll be in MITB. I'd bet that spot on Kofi. What else either could do however, I do not know.

It's new to see edge turning face.It was a new experience to know edge teaming with john cena in a house show.
We saw sheamus given extra big push, but why guys like kozlov, knox, bourne are being underused?

I just cannot get excited about Jericho/Edge for the World title and it's because we have seen Chris Jericho lose for so many months to midcard opponents. So, now WWE has a lose-lose main event where if Edge wins, then it's like "big deal, R-Truth pinned Jericho too," and if Edge loses, then it's like "wow, you really suck Edge, even R-Truth can beat Jericho."

Having Jericho squeak out wins over a NXT rookie and goldust isn't really doing any favors for this perception either.

If it weren't for the title, then I wouldn't have to buy Jericho as a World champion just months after losing to half the roster, and as a grudge match, it would be more intriguing.

Matt Striker is starting annoy me the way Michael Cole annoys me. While Striker's knowledge of wrestling is refreshing, some of the nicknames he's been coming up with for the wrestlers just sound dumb.

Tom Sawyer is one of the greatest songs in history. Well done Striker.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Agree. And it's on one of my favorite album of all time, Moving Pictures.

Kev,

I also am amazed at there having been no confrontation between edge and Vickie as yet. Or even a mention of their former relationship especially in the Edge & Big Show speech, who could forget that is was 12 months ago that Show was revealed to be having an affair with Vickie.

As for pairing of Truth & Morrison I have mixed feelings on one hand I am disappointed I am not getting to see the Hart Dynasty go for tag Gold but on the other hand finally a Miz and Morrison tag match at wrestlemania.

Nice to see Shelton come out on top 2 weeks in a row, now if they could just let him get that briefcase but I honestly think it will either be Hardy, Ziggler or Christian outside chance of Swagger or MVP.

Sorry but the spear chants are annoying sure they serve a purpose but they are annoying.

Anyone else not a fan of the way Gallows pins the opponent.

The Spear chant must not be allowed to take hold! It's incredibly lackluster.

More great work from the SES this week.

Jackson looked like a monster!
