Goodbye ECW, hello NXT
The curtain closed on ECW Tuesday night with Ezekiel Jackson becoming the answer to a trivia question. He defeated Christian in an Extreme Rules match to become the new – and final – ECW champion
Nothing special was done to commemorate ECW’s last episode, although Christian did put over the ECW originals in his pre-match promo. I thought perhaps WWE would have Joey Styles, the voice of the old ECW and currently WWE’s director of digital media content, call the last match, but it didn’t happen.
Actually, it probably was fitting that Styles wasn’t on the broadcast. The WWE TV version of ECW really had nothing to do with the original ECW anyway. The edgy, innovative Philadelphia-based company died in 2001, and the show that has been airing Tuesday nights on SyFy the past four years may as well have been called Heat or Velocity.
Other thoughts on Tuesday’s show:
Jackson and Christian had a good brawl that included run-ins by Zack Ryder and William Regal as well as a spot in which ECW general manager Tiffany speared Rosa Mendes. Since Josh Matthews and Byron Saxton didn’t do it, I yelled “Catfight! Catfight! Catfight!” at the TV screen. ...
I won’t be surprised if Jackson ends up becoming a money player at some point on Raw or Smackdown. I hope Christian does, too. If he doesn’t, it will be a real waste of talent. ...
The WWE unified tag team title match that saw The Miz and The Big Show successfully defend their championship against Goldust and Yoshi Tatsu was entertaining. Miz and Big Show got a nice win and Goldust and Tatsu looked good in defeat. ...
Vladimir Kozlov actually got a decent pop when he came out during The Abraham Washington Show. The fans also cheered when Kozlov and Shelton Benjamin shook hands after they cleared the ring of Vance Archer, Trent Barreta and Caylen Croft. ...
I’m sure that Washington will end up on Raw or Smackdown in some capacity, but if he no longer does the talk show gimmick, I hope WWE finds something for Tony Atlas to do. Am I the only one who was laughing out loud every time Atlas did “the laugh” on this show? ...
The talent that will appear on WWE NXT – the hybrid live event/reality show that takes over ECW’s time slot beginning next week – was revealed. The premise is that eight WWE stars will each mentor a “rookie.”
Here are the pairings:
• Chris Jericho – Wade Barrett
• Matt Hardy – Justin Gabriel
• MVP – Skip Sheffield
• Carlito – Michael Tarver
• The Miz – Daniel Bryan
• Christian – Heath Slater
• CM Punk – Darren Young
• R-Truth – David Otunga
A report on pwinsider.com Tuesday afternoon had a slightly different list of WWE developmental talent that supposedly was going to be on NXT, including Kaval (Low Ki), Brett DiBiase (Ted Sr.’s son) and Joe Hennig (Curt’s son). I’m surprised none of them will be a part of it. ...
I’m betting that the heads of hardcore Ring of Honor fans exploded when it was announced that The Miz would be mentoring Bryan. While Miz was doing his pro wrestler-wannabe shtick on “The Real World,” Bryan was forging a reputation as “The Best Wrestler in the World” on the independent scene and in Japan. ...
I like the group of veterans WWE selected for NXT. I didn’t expect a guy at Jericho’s level to be a part of it. ...
The thought of an impressionable talent taking their cues from Carlito – a frequent occupant in WWE’s dog house – is kind of a scary thought. ...
I wonder if Punk will be a stickler for Young adhering to WWE’s dress code.

Kevin, ECW show was disappointing y have a ECW match if ur not going to have a belt anymore, also Koslov and Shelton looks like a good fit as tag team, my only concern is y all the trainers who have not much of a storyline as coaches, also do u know y finlay isn't wrestling now......thanks

Damn. I was hoping it would Punk and Danielson, er, Bryan.

Kevin I'm afraid the answer to your question about Atlas is a resounding yes. And I couldn't stop laughing about your Punk comment. I believe his conversation with Darren Young will be something like this:
"Hey Darren nice to see you, o.k. here is a quick rundown of everything you need to know how to succeed in the WWE. Have good mic skills, be smart in the ring, don't get involved in backstage politics, and most importantly always, and I mean always tuck your shirt in around The Undertaker."

Kevin, are you really that surprised that Jericho is involved. WWE snubs him all the time. It made me want to vomit when they gave John Morrison a DVD set before Jericho. I think that smart wrestling fans love Jericho but most of the time WWE just sees him as a guy who is at the top of the mid card. Not to mention that Jericho jobs to guys all the time.

2 thoughts that crossed my mind last night: was anyone else bothered that Zeke--NOT CHRISTIAN--will go down as ECW's final titlist?
Also, wouldn't it make more sense to have CM Punk and "Daniel Bryan" paired up (the old ROH guys) and maybe David Otunga and Miz (2 former reality TV guys?) At least they'd be working with guys with a similar background.

Kevin, do you see any of the people in the ring during the Abraham Washington segment being "future endeavored" in the next 6-8 months? With the exception of Shelton, I dont have a good feeling about any of them.

id like to start by saying that byron saxton is the worst commentator of all time. my favorite line of the night was when he was talking about big show,"his size doesnt do his um .... size...um oh..... ah.. justice"
the tag team was pretty good. i still miss the attitude era goldust though, maybe he'll have a program with cody?
i think this match was a sign of things to come for christian. i think he's proven that he is at main event status but he'll go back to being used just like he was before he left the first time, going for the tag team and intercontinental titles.
and i was interested to see nxt when i saw henning, dibiase and low ki on the list but now i could care less. half the guys seem exactly the same.

Hopefully Kaval will eventually get to NXT.
Kev, who you do you think has the most chances to be the next great superstar among these so called "rookies"?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't know a lot about some of them, but I'd have to go with Danielson. Justin Gabriel has been impressive from what I've seen of him.

Since no one has said it....and it must be said, "OH MY GAWD" Goodbye...again, to ECW. Wonder what Paul Heyman is thinking right now? Happy? Sad?

So, this Wade Barret guy is a future world champion huh?
I mean, nobody knows the guy but, eh, Chris Jericho is his mentor. Lucky newbie.

At first the pairing of Miz and Danielson gave me pause, especially since they referred to Danielson as a "rookie" ... yet, it makes sense. Very few people watching WWE even know who Danielson is and Miz's star is on the rise in a big way. Like it or not, Danielson's career up til this point has been wrestling in port-a-potties and bus stops.

THATS NOT FAIR FOR ECW U SUCK MR.MCMHAN.SSSSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK IIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTT.

Wow, way to completely bury Christian by having him job to Sheamus and then Ezekiel Jackson consecutively.
Truly a great way to show respect to a guy who carried the 'C-show' for about a full year. At best he'll get a program for the IC title on Smackdown but thats about it...just a shame

Any news about a womens' division in NXT? Something to top TNA's knockouts...
Posted by: Rakeback | February 18, 2010 5:38 AM
Well, he's the "last" ECW champion for now until years from now when the gimmick gets pulled off the shelf & get dusted off again. This is wrestling after all; no concept stays dead forever.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Good point.

DiBiase and Hennig would have been great choices. Even if they're not ready, their name recognition would be more than enough for them to have a spot.

I get the feeling that whatever show Ezekiel Jackson ends up on, so will that ECW belt also. Would that make him the only undefeated ECW champion of all time (so therefore the most successful)?

"While Miz was doing his pro wrestler-wannabe shtick on “The Real World,” Bryan was forging a reputation as “The Best Wrestler in the World” on the independent scene and in Japan. ..."
That same thought stroke my mind too, when I read that.
I read recently somewhere on the internet (i think it was on some of the numerous blogs or rumor-sites), that WWE plans for Bryan Danielson were that he joins the Straight Edge Society and becomes Punk's new wrestling prodigy, so I was a bit surprised that Miz ended up as his mentor.
P.S. I think that was a great pre-match promo from Christian. As expected.
I really hope he gets a push.

I was looking at the list and the first thing that came to mind was that the pairing may have to do with what the strengths are for the superstars. RTruth could be showing/teaching Otung how to connect to the crowd. I dont know much about Daniel Bryan but Miz maybe showing/teaching him how to be comfortable on the mic.

Kevin,
Kaval's not on it because he complained when they told him they'd team him up with Santino.
I'm kidding, but...

I'm sorry I tried to read this...but I need to know. Did you dye your hair kevin? You're an adult for god's sake.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, I did. Adults dye their hair.

Who knows, maybe Henning, Dibiase, and Kaval aren't going to be on the show because they're being moved to Raw or Smackdown. That would be nice, maybe they can put Henning and Dibiase in the Orton-Legacy feud.

I have a hard time caring about any of the ECW "superstars" EXCEPT for Christian and Tiffany. My hope is Vince has something good planned for them.
Posted by: Bill | February 19, 2010 12:35 AM
I'd read somewhere on the interneck that Triple H was gonna be on the show as a mentor to Seamus (or maybe I wrote it on the interneck...eh, whatever). I'm disappointed to find out that's not the case. Poor Seamus, he's liable to wind up lost in the shuffle without a proper mentor. I can just imagine the devastated look on his face when he sees all these other guys shoot past him on the card.

Goodbye ECW. It has not been the same since 2000 when Tazz was there.
How long do you expect NXT to last? One year maybe?
Any word on which superstar is going to what show?
Maybe Zeke can go to TNA with that title and have a program with whoever is going to hold the global/ legends title.

Rhino never lost the belt either. By the way, it has been announced that William Regal is replacing MVP as Skip Sheffield.
