Smackdown delivers strong go-home show for Royal Rumble

There was a lot to like about Friday night’s episode of Smackdown. It featured four strong matches – three of which were fresh matchups – involving top guys, as well as some good talking segments. More importantly, it did an excellent job of selling Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

The highlight was the main event match between Shawn Michaels and Rey Mysterio, two superstars and top-notch workers who have rarely been in the ring together.

When the show opened, Smackdown general manager Teddy Long said that unified WWE tag team champion DX’s title defense against CM Punk and Luke Gallows was off, and instead Punk would be facing Triple H, and Michaels would wrestle Mysterio. Bait and switch tactics are one of my biggest pet peeves, but I certainly can’t complain about the two singles matches. I’m not sure why WWE changed its mind on the tag team match, though.

In addition to Michaels-Mysterio and Triple H-Punk, Smackdown also had a match between Intercontinental champion Drew McIntyre and John Morrison for the title, and Chris Jericho against R-Truth.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Both the Michaels-Mysterio and Triple H-Punk matches ended in disqualifications rather than pinfalls, but I wouldn’t have booked them any differently. I was worried that Punk was going to have to do the job, so my hope was that Gallows and or/Serena would interfere to lead to a DQ, and that’s what happened. There was no way Triple H was going to put Punk over, and he really shouldn’t have, as he needs to be booked strong heading into the Rumble. By the way, I think Serena is a great addition to Punk’s entourage. She’s not a bad-looking bald chick either. ...

The Undertaker simultaneously choke-slamming Michaels and Mysterio was a good way to end the show. It played into the idea that both Michaels and Mysterio are underdogs in their matches at the Rumble. ...

DX, Mysterio and Punk all did a nice job on the mic in the opening segment. With Michaels, Triple H and Punk it’s to be expected, but Mysterio has surprisingly developed into a decent – not great, but solid – promo guy. ...

I was very happy to see R-Truth get a pinfall on Jericho. It’s his biggest win to date in WWE. Kudos to Jericho for always being a team player. You can tell that he is so confident in his abilities and secure with himself that he has no problem putting anyone over. ...

Speaking of big wins, McIntyre scored one against Morrison in a match that came across like the blow-off to their program. Keeping the belt on McIntyre is probably the right call. He needs it to help him get over, whereas Morrison will likely be over the same with or without the belt. As an aside, I couldn’t believe that Morrison actually said in his pre-match promo that he earned his spot and wasn’t hand-picked by management and “pedigreed into a top spot.” I hope for his sake that line was scripted and not an ab-lib. ...

I liked the stare-down with Triple H and Batista backstage and their physical confrontation at the end of the show. There’s a lot of history between them, and it obviously teased a confrontation during the Rumble match. ...

What was up with Batista’s outfit? Was that “The Animal” or The Great Gatsby? ...

Did anyone believe for one second that Punk was actually going shave off even one strand of Triple H’s hair? Also, did I hear Todd Grisham say that Triple H is a 14-time world champion? I’m pretty sure it’s 13, but who’s counting (besides Triple H)? ...

More Grisham: He said that R-Truth’s favorite Royal Rumble match was in 1992 because it was won by Ric Flair and they are both from North Carolina. I was surprised that Flair’s name was mentioned on a WWE program since he now works for TNA. Matt Striker quickly downplayed it by saying that 1992 was over; this is 2010. ...

The Piggy James skit with Michelle McCool and Layla was mildly amusing, but it probably went on a bit too long.

Is there any chance we see Mysterio win the title and him and Batista win the Rumble and we see a final match for the title at Wrestlemania, Eck?

I always hate it when commentators add in obviously fake little tidbits about wrestlers ("I spoke with the Great Khali today, and he said that Vladimir Kozlov is the best mat technician he's ever seen, but Khali still thinks he's vulnerable to the Punjabi Plunge.") and both Grisham and Striker were heavy with that tonight. During the Truth-Jericho match there was a point where it seemed like they were trying to out do each other, with three or four of those annoying little "facts" in a row. I don't know if Vince is in their ear feeding them that tripe, but I very nearly changed the channel it was so grating. (Ultimately I just muted them.)

Finally they have Jericho job to someone deserving of bing put over!

As someone that is highly skeptical of WWE's faith in Truth, I was extremely shocked that he got the win over Jericho.

Guess I shouldn't be shocked about Jericho any more. Guy knows that he has a secured spot with the company (even after the arrest). He can lose all he wants and know that he'll still get pushed.

I have always been a Punk fan, but now he is really starting to become possibly my all-time faovorite. I love this straight-edge society gimmick!

HHH's jokes about Punk was really funny though

Don't like Jericho jobbing. He really could have been built to be a mega-star wonder why its not happening???

I was a little irked by the hard-sell of Triple H by the commentators. At one point, Stryker called Triple H "The father of the industry," and later on he said that the Royal Rumble has traditionally favored "fast and agile" wrestlers like " Jericho, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H." I get the impression that they're either trying to warm the universe up to a Triple H victory at the Rumble or fool the smart marks.
The Shawn Michaels and Mysterio build-up was great, but the actual match was so- so.

I was worried that HHH would squash CM Punk, but thankfully, Punk was allowed to be competitive. The match was the best that I have seen from Trips in awhile, and it's probably not coincidental that Punk was his opponent.

So, when did it become okay to talk about a "...week-long crack binge" on what is supposed to be kid friendly t.v.? That promo Triple H cut was hilarious to me, however I did have to lie to my nine year old little brother that I had no clue what he was talking about...
Well, I guess when you are the next in line to own the company you can really say whatever you want...

"Kudos to Jericho for always being a team player. You can tell that he is so confident in his abilities and secure with himself that he has no problem putting anyone over. ..."

A stark contrast to Triple H.

When is Triple H is just going to go away? Retire, suffer a career-ending injury, or stop being such a scumbag? Not only did he have to bury Mysterio (Hornswoggle joke) and Punk, he also threw his daily gay joke at Punk. He then had to make himself look strong by making Batista back down in their stare-down AND later take him out as well. The commentators then had to make him sound like God by saying he's the "father of wrestling" today. Add that to the fact that that moron Grisham buried Punk in commentary. They even had to add in Triple H winning the RR during the RR records video, even though that was not a record at all.

And why did they keep saying it was the first Michaels-Mysterio match? They faced each other during the Guerrero tribute show - you'd think they would at least remember THAT.

Well clearly the rumble final 4 will be: HHH, HBK, Cena, and Batista.

The winner will probably be Cena or Batista, after HHH eliminates HBK in a "shocking" turn of events and then one of the other two throws out trips while he has a stare down with the eliminated michaels.

Yeah it was a good show, but Eck you can't be satisfied with how the tag titles have been treated since DX have gotten the straps. They never talk about being the champs, barely even walk with the straps during entrances (guess you can't hold all that & throw glow sticks at the same time). On Raw they put the belts down in the middle of the ring so they can cut their long-a** promos, and now the tag title match is traded in for 2 DQ matches.

I don't understand...so much I don't understand.

Now that you mention it, Batista did look like something out of the 1920's but I did like his hat. I doubt that Jay Gatsby was covered with tattoos though :).

Drew McIntyre's pinning style is definitely more pleasing when Marysse does it.

They said it was the first Michaels-Mysterio match on Smackdown. Wasn't the Guerrero tribute show on RAW?

I think the UTTC match did not take place is bcz maybe wwe did not want to book any of the teams to lose.Just a thought.

@Anonymous- They weren't saying it was the first Michaels-Mysterio match, they were saying it was the first Michaels-Mysterio match on Smackdown

i think that sets it up taker loses the title at the rumble to Mysterio and then batista wins the rumble to face Mysterio at wrestlemainia, it makes sence as if taker is to face cena at mainia the belt shouldn't be in it.

I loved the Batista outfit, and I would love to know if he dresses like that in daily life.

Lately, it appears that every time he is allowed to dress himself, he has the least intimidating wardrobe imaginable. He often wears pink. Do you think his fashion choices are the result of a lost bet or a funny rib coming down from someone like HHH? Is he a big enough star that upper level management allows him to do what ever he pleases?

The week before Wrestlemania, he should wear a tuxedo with tails, a top hat, and a black cane in honor of the big event.

Batista's wardrobe choices are some of the funniest things on WWE programming over the last 6 months. Heck the Derby and the V Neck sweater matched.

(By the way, I thought this was the best WWE show in ages. I don't think I changed the channel once. That is the first time in ages I can say that.)

Now if they could figure out a way to get Batista in a wardrobe like Sabu.

RESPONSE FROM KE: It's funny you should mention his outfit Friday possibly being the result of losing a bet. That thought crossed my mind as well.

Bait and switch tactics are one of my biggest pet peeves, but I certainly can’t complain about the two singles matches. I’m not sure why WWE changed its mind on the tag team match, though.

I think the UTTC match did not take place is bcz maybe wwe did not want to book any of the teams to lose. Just a thought.

I'd bet that the Punk/HHH and HBK/Rey matches were booked in advanced and the DX/SES match was only "scheduled" to get DX on Smackdown! in the first place.

Punk & Gallows won the title opportunity out of nowhere, and having the title match BEFORE the Royal Rumble made no sense. Not having the match happen yet makes a lot more sense to me now, and they can maybe have it on next week's Smackdown!

DX should have the titles when their split starts, so they can be forced to team together and defend the belts (and probably lose them) as a means of building tension.

Forcing upcoming rivals to team together is basic Booking 101, so what we are seeing with DX here is slightly more advanced Booking 301 (well, maybe Booking 201).

Doesn't anyone watching Smackdown ever pick up a GQ magazine, Batista's gear is always on the fashion cutting edge and Friday was no exception.

Sounds like alot of dudes trapped in the 1990's

RESPONSE FROM KE: If that look is hip, I'm happy being square.

"Ab-Lib.." Nice Kev, nice. You should try and get yourself a guest spot on Santino's sitcom.

Another Grisham clanger: referring to HBK as 'The Icon". Ummmm....

I like how HHH said "You dont do drugs smoke or drink well neither do I" should someone tell HHH that Steroids is prob considered a drug...Good show overall though. I really wish this was the Mon night show so I could watch it weekly...

Best episode of a wrestling show I've seen in a long time. Really solid. Yes, Batista looked idiotic.

HOWEVER

Not having watched Raw lately, I had not seen how shamefully DX treats the tag belts, leaving them on the ground like random garbage while they do their stupid dance. This disrespect for the titles infuriated me, and I even paused the program to rant to my girlfriend about it.

THEN later Morrison comes out, uses the code word "pedigree," says "I have nothing against celebrations, but," and tells some anecdote about Drew leaving the title on the ground while he celebrated with Sheamus...

Especially coming from a guy who broke through into the bigtime via a tag championship, that just HAD to be a coded shoot on Triple H & DX treatment of the tag straps.

Right?

Or am I just off my meds???
