TNA Impact: Jeff Jarrett back on the scene

For the first time in nearly five months, TNA founder Jeff Jarrett had a presence on Impact. We didn’t see him on Thursday’s episode, but we did hear his voice in a telephone conversation with Mick Foley.

Foley, still paranoid about Hulk Hogan’s imminent arrival in the company, called Jarrett and asked him to come back and take care of the situation. Jarrett promptly told him to shove it and hung up on him.

Earlier in the show, it became apparent that Jarrett was on his way back to TV because his name was brought up during TNA president Dixie Carter’s sit-down interview with Mike Tenay. It goes without saying that the subject of Jarrett would not have been raised unless he was returning.

Carter spoke in vague terms about Jarrett being put on leave due to a personal situation that affected the company and put everyone in a bad position. For those who don’t know or don’t remember, it became public knowledge last summer that Jarrett was in a relationship with Karen Angle, Kurt’s former wife and a former TNA talent. Jarrett disappeared from TNA shortly thereafter with the story that he was taking time off for personal reasons.

Judging by Jarrett’s tone with Foley, I expect him to be a heel when he returns. Jarrett as a babyface was starting to wear thin with the fans before his departure, and with Angle now a babyface, an Angle-Jarrett program almost certainly will happen.

When Desmond Wolfe first showed up in TNA and attacked Angle, the announcers speculated that someone sent Wolfe to take him out. I said right away that my money was on Jarrett and Karen Angle. It will be interesting to see if things play out that way.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

The Carter interview was good, as it had elements of both kayfabe and real life. For the sake of TNA, I just hope she knows what she’s doing by bringing in Hogan. …

I rolled my eyes when Kevin Nash said that he was thinking of “putting the band back together.” An nWo tease? How lame. Yeah, that’s just what I want to see, a haggard Scott Hall taking up space. If TNA does want to reunite “the band,” it couldn’t call the act the nWo, as WWE owns the rights to that name. …

Matt Morgan and Hernandez got a huge pop when they came out to save D’Angelo Dinero and Suicide from Team 3D and Jesse Neal. Morgan seemingly became a “made man” with his match against Angle at the Bound for Glory pay-per-view, but the follow-up hasn’t done much for him. …

I think Eric Young is doing a fantastic job as a heel, but comparing him to Shawn Michaels is a bit much. …

A.J. Styles was attacked again by a mystery man, so that angle hasn’t been forgotten. It has to be Tomko, right? …

Someone finally realized that Bobby Lashley can’t cut a promo, so they had his wife do it for him. Kristal Lashley seemed very comfortable on the mic. The Lashleys must be turning heel, because letting the woman do the talking for the jacked-up man is not characteristic of a babyface. …

I liked what Victoria was saying during the “Trash Talk with ODB” segment about how she hated that she became a joke in WWE and she broke her contract so she could compete against the best in TNA, but I hated her delivery. I thought the crying was a little over the top, and she looked weak when she ran off in tears after ODB attacked her. By the way, I hope this wasn’t the start of a heel turn for ODB. She’s way too entertaining as a babyface to do that. …

Is there going to be dissension already between Dr. Stevie and Raven? It seems that way, since Stevie abandoned Raven during their handicap match against Angle. …

The Hamada-Sarita match was entertaining. When the subject of the best women wrestlers comes up, Hamada definitely has to be in the discussion. It’s great that there is a place for someone who possesses her skills but doesn’t have the “diva” look. …

I liked the Alex Shelley-Doug Williams match. It’s a shame they couldn’t have gotten more than four minutes. …

Did I hear Wolfe refer to the fans as “window lickers?” I don’t know what that means, but it’s pretty funny. Still not as good as calling the fans “mucilaginous troglodytes,” though. …

It was nice to see D-Lo Brown get a little camera time. He works behind the scenes as an agent in TNA. …

What was with the cameraman sticking his hands in front of the camera? I don’t know who thinks that’s funny, but to me, it just makes the show look amateurish.

I thought that the best thing about this episode was the running story between Suicide and The Pope. Since Pope is now a babyface, he had to earn Suicide's trust. It seems like often after someone turns, their previous opponents are just instant friends. That was a nice bit of continuity.

Was it just my ears, I listened two or three times to be sure, but I swear ODB referred to the "Knocked Up" title near the end of the segment with Tara. Pretty funny considering ODB's claims that Tara is sleeping her way to the top.

I was thinking that TNA might be bringing back X-Pac. Is there any possibility of that happening? I was always a fan of his and he has history with Nash. I can't wait to see Jarrett come back if he does. If the attacker isn't Tomko, it would be interesting to see who it is, wouldn't it be something if it were Russo?

"Did I hear Wolfe refer to the fans as “window lickers?” I don’t know what that means, but it’s pretty funny."

Kev, 'window licker' is a derogatory term used in Britain to describe someone who is mentally handicapped.

RESPONSE FROM KE: On second thought, maybe it isn't so funny.

"Window Licker" was a popular Aphex Twin song back in the late '90s.

What the term actually means is probably best left for you and a Google search. It's not the most PC term.

Seems to me that TNA is trying to shoehorn Bobby/Kristal into the vacated spot of Booker/Sharmell.

Actually I have been watching a few of Wolfie's promos and they are really close to being very offensive. But he is trying to be a proper old school heel really, stiff matches, offensive to everyone...reminds me of the Dudley Boys when they were heels in the old ECW days and the fans were almost rioting...if he could get that level of heat it would be great for his character, and instantly raise any babyface that worked with him. Personally I like his character, he seems to have transitioned well from ROH, I just think he needs to be a bit more dangerous...

TNA's biggest problem - consistency...

In the last six months, there have been too many face/heel turns to count.

Who can name all of them? Good luck...I can't...

Does Hamada speak english ? I think it's clear that she is the best women's wrestler on american soil at the moment...and by a wide margin. Can she be pushed to the title despite her lacking in english ?

My favorite Wolfe-ism was "my tasty British phlegm." Gotta be a wrestling first.

Which goes to the broader concern about TNA: they've built up a roster of very talented wrestlers whose identity is completely TNA and are getting over with the crowd -- Wolfe, Morgan, Hernandez, Styles, Sabin & Shelley, Amazing Red, Beer Money, Dinero, Suicide, etc. And yet TNA management seems more intent on recycling the old guys.

Thursday's show was a good example. The younger wrestlers provided the bulk of the in-ring action, but a whole lot of airtime was spent pushing the veterans' storylines.

TNA still has an inferiority complex; they seem to believe that the biggest stars are from the WWE, and that they need to spotlight the ex-WWE talent to boost the company's fortunes. As long as that's the case, TNA will never be the #1 wrestling company.

ODB needs to keep doing what she is doing. I would like to see her defend the belt in more solo matches and get good wins before it is time to drop it. Hamada is fantastic, but probably doesn't speak English well enough to be considered a title holder right now. A manager might do her well if they want the belt on her.

Keep Raven/Stevie/Daffney together. They do a great job as a unit.

Shouldn't Abyss lose the mask and just go by Chris? Everybody calls him that anyway, so have a "mask vs something else match" and get on with it.

Hopefully Daniels wins the world title from AJ. He is great and deserves a run. I would like to see a Daniels/Joe/Tomko group form.

I now wonder if Sting would go the WWE since they are more family friendly vs the TNA product right now. Wasn't that always his reason for not working in the WWE?

Im looking forward to the elimination match at Final Resolution. "Team Pope" (since he seems to be doing most of the talking) has three of my personal favorites, while "Team 3D" is simply a sick faction.

P.S. if nWo returns, TNA will have forced me to spend my Thursdays watching WWE Superstars.....please...

Considering the real life history involving Angle and Jarrett, I think it would be a terrible idea for the creative team to try to play off any of that to try to propel a fictional wrestling storyline.

Having the two men work together in the same company would seemingly be awkward enough without putting them in a wrestling program with each other, right now.

I hope it almost certainly *won't* happen.

Having Kristal Lashley speak for her husband is obviously better than having him speak, but what has happened to the role of the manager in wrestling? Guys like Bobby Lashley, Frankie Kazarian, and even AJ Styles could benefit from having a mouth piece.

I think Don West is doing this for Red. I think TNA has a couple of older former wrestlers who could be this guy for them. B.G. James stands out to me as a guy who was good on the microphone and could be entertaining as a manager. Who else could fit this role?

RESPONSE FROM KE: FYI -- BG James is no longer with the company.

A few thoughts on Thursday show. Bobby Lashley is awful in the ring and now having his wife do the talking for him confirms what we all know that he is awful on the mic. He needs to stick to MMA and retire from wrestling because he really sucks. I like what I have seen of Desmond Wolfe so far but did not like the 'window lickers' comment . Harmda is a fantastic wrestler and hopefully will get a run with the Knockouts title in the near future. Kurt Angle as a face or a heel is still one of the best wrestlers in the world today and WWE droped the ball with Elijah Burke aka the pope because I think he has great potential and will do very well in TNA.

I'm thrilled that Jeff Jarrett is coming back. He just understands wrestling, and Karen Angle nonsense aside, he's a top star even now. This was a weird show because most of the match pairings were odd, and the wrestling was secondary to the angles as usual. This is almost always a weakness of TNA, which is always in love with the nonsense and gimmicks over the matches. Like watching a bad RAW.

"Window Licker" has been doing the rounds in the UK for a while.
It relates to people with serious mental problems. Sometimes they bus them about and the 'joke' is they lick the inside windows of the bus as you drive past.

Its used fairly tongue in cheek in the UK, but I can understand people being offended.

I wish they'd just drop Lashley. They are so desperate to get crossover from MMA they'll keep pushing the guy. But its an embarssment, the poor guy can't wrestle or cut a promo. It really annoys me the amount of time they waste on that dumb feud with him and Steiner. Does anyone even care?

I agree on the comments about TNA talent. Theres some great wrestlers on the roster. TNA is at its best when they give these guys time to have good matches without all the worked endings or rubbish gimmicks.
There has been some fantastic wrestling recently, and I like the variety in the style of moves and matches. At the moment to many WWE matches seem stuck with the same formula and old moves.

I just hope they dont' ruin TNA by trying to make it a poor mans WWE.

I'm sure you'll hear about this from wrestlingobserver.com or other news sites but Hulk Hogan was interviewed during the UFC show on Spike tonight and he announced that Impact would go go head-to-head with Raw on January 4.

At first I, and probably a lot of others, thought he was talking about a permanent change but after listening to the interview a second time and reading the announcement on the TNA website (http://www.tnawrestling.com/content/view/1836/84/) it looks more like a one-time-only deal. Hopefully you can find out which it is and clarify for us.

If WWE could put Edge and Matt Hardy in a program with each other, then I guess there's no reason TNA can't do the same with Angle and Jarrett.

It all depends on how Angle and Jarrett are.

Their situations weren't exact duplicates of the situation between Hardy, Edge, and Lita. Nor are their personalities.

At the time, Hardy was just happy to be back in WWE and having a job. He's more likely to accept the program than Angle, who much more leverage as a hot commodity, might not necessarily be as inclined.

RESPONSE FROM KE: You make a good point. However, if Angle and Jarrett believe there is money to be made or ratings to be increased because of this angle, they will do it in a heartbeat.
