Quick hits on ECW

• Tommy Dreamer, who recently gave his notice to WWE, got to wrestle one last match and say goodbye on Tuesday night’s episode of ECW. He put over Zack Ryder in a match that was set up when Dreamer said that he would leave ECW if he didn’t win. The match wasn’t bad, but there wasn’t a whole lot of drama since the outcome was obvious.

• Evan Bourne and Mike Knox had a decent match as part of the ECW Homecoming qualifying. I had mixed feelings about the outcome. It was nice to see Bourne win a match, but I think WWE could do a lot more with Knox’s character. With his look and size, he would have been a star during the days of the territories.

• The Matt Hardy-Finlay match – which Hardy won – was OK, but not as good as I thought it would be.

• It was announced that CM Punk will be on next week’s show to compete in a qualifying match. Why would a three-time world heavyweight champion care about getting a shot at the ECW title? With that being said, however, I would love to see a match between Punk and Christian.

• Ezekiel Jackson cut a short promo that was serviceable. At one point he stopped talking in mid-sentence and got angry because Vladimir Kozlov was coming out to interrupt him. The only problem was that Jackson reacted a second before Kozlov’s music actually started playing.

• It was unintentionally funny when Kozlov and Jackson kept grunting and growling at each other. Kozlov raised his arms in the air a couple times in an effort to get the crowd to cheer him, but it didn’t work. The fans just don’t really care about Kozlov or Jackson right now. William Regal is the key to getting Jackson over as a heel and Kozlov over as a babyface.

• Trent Barreta and Caylen Croft showed a bit more personality this week during a backstage segment with Goldust and Yoshi Tatsu.

• What the heck was Byron Saxton saying about someone’s haircut during the Hardy-Finlay match?

It seemed to me that for a few weeks there the crowd seemed ready to get behind Jackson when the inevitable turn came. But WWE kind of threw us a swerve with Kozlov becoming the face and Jackson staying with Regal. Not only does no one care about Kozlov, but we were expecting to get behind Jackson. When that didn't happen, I think the fans just lost what little interest thy had in the program.

I agree with Knox not being used properly. I think he could be a Bruiser Brody type character.
Hey Kev, do you think you can do a post on the top talkers in the business? Or if you have already, can you repost?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Haven't done one, but it's not a bad idea.

I believe Saxton was trying to make fun of Christian's hair. They kept showing Christian after the comments. He does have some funky hair.

To your point a while back, what a let down it must be for Tommy Dreamer to leave like that. He should have left while his challenge to regain the title was going on.

Also, isn't he married to Beulah? She has lost a step or two.

RESPONSE FROM KE: He is married to Beulah.

I really don't know what to say about Punk at this point. As anyone ever been that high in the company only to come plummeting down so fast? Please tell me how Sheamus is getting pushed while CM Punk is now relegated to ECW?

RESPONSE FROM KE: It's ridiculous.

I fast forwarded through most of ECW this week. If i wanted to see a bunch of Smackdown and Raw random midcard bouts, I'd just watch Superstars. I'd prefer the ECW roster actually getting the spotlight.

Zack Ryder retiring Tommy Dreamer? that's like saying Hornswoggle is retiring Rey Mysterio....;)

RESPONSE FROM KE: I think it should have been Swagger.

It's very rare that I give Vinnie Mac or the WWE credit, but in this case I have to. Tommy Dreamer wanted out of his contract, and WWE gave him his release. Instead of just wishing him well in his future endeavors, they gave him a small storyline, and gave him the opportunity to speak to all of his fans one last time to say goodbye. WWE showed Tommy the respect that he showed the business for all these years. They didn't have to give him that moment, or even show it on TV, but they did, and I commend them for that. For once, WWE got it right.

It was sad to see Tommy Dreamer go out to practically zero reaction. Just because he didn't win world titles and headline PPV shows doesn't make him any less deserving of respect for what he's put his body through for OUR entertainment.

I tuned in to ECW for the first time in a long time to see Dreamer's last match with the WWE and the best mic work came from Christian right at the beginning when he slammer Byron Saxton with a Bryant Gumbel comparison.

Kev, do you think Christian will ever get moved up to one of the big shows? He would get over huge with a Smackdown crowd I think. And also I hear the WWE is retooling ECW. Thoughts? In my opinion they should have ECW taped in the same arena like TNA and the original ECW.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I have no doubt that Christian will be on Raw or Smackdown in 2010.

Kev, when do you see Cristian leaving ECW? Waiting for Edge? Any news on his return? Thanks. Happy & Healthy New Year to you & yours!

RESPONSE FROM KE: WWE is hoping to have Edge back in time to do Edge-Jericho at WrestleMania.

Finlay/Hardy match was a prelude to finlay turring heel.....I see Finlay turning on all the Faces.....He is wearing more of the black outfit then the green one.....Finlay turning will be a asset for ECW/SD

Since I didn't know about Tommy Dreamer's career plans, I was quite surprised by the outcome of the Dreamer-Ryder match. Considering that this guy is supposed to be the "heart and soul of ECW," I thought his departure would get more buildup: a Ric Flair-style series of matches over a period of weeks, or at least a higher-profile opponent. Title match with Christian, for instance. Of course, now that I know he's leaving for a job with TNA, I guess the WWE was uncharacteristically generous with Tommy.

One thing that struck me oddly: the fact that he left the arena with his two daughters, leaving his wife behind in the stands. Why not the whole family? Or was that just the babysitter?

As for Knox, I share your puzzlement in his apparent inheritance of the Gene Snitsky role as WWE's giant jobber. Knox isn't the greatest in the world, but he'd make a better giant heel than a lot of the stiffs who've gotten a major push from the WWE.

RESPONSE FROM KE: That was Dreamer's wife, who used to go by Beulah in the old ECW.

Here's what I'm thinking they could do with Knox. They've already given him a "mentally unbalanced student of human anatomy" gimmick. Knox should join Luke Gallows as a follower of CM Punk; he could say doesn't do any drugs because he's studied their effects on the human body. Worst case is people will continue to not care about him. Best case is that he gets to cut some more promos and gain some heat from those and from his association with Punk.

"RESPONSE FROM KE: I think it should have been Swagger."

Wishful thinking. That would had required Swagger to actually win the match.

Dreamer should had retired right after winning the ECW back at Extreme Rules.

I'm happy to finally read an internet writer who doesn't hate my favorite wrestler Matt Hardy. Why does everyone hate him so much?

"Wishful thinking. That would had required Swagger to actually win the match.

Dreamer should had retired right after winning the ECW back at Extreme Rules."

I agree with Kevin on this one. Swagger has much more personality, wrestling ability, star persona, and "swagger" to retire Dreamer than Zack "popboy" Ryder.

Happy new year to all!

"Why would a three-time world heavyweight champion care about getting a shot at the ECW title?"

If the alternative is to have the contents of another trash can dumped onto him....

I think Ryder retiring Dreamer is not that bad. They both come from the same place, and except Dreamer Ryder is the one who has been in the roster the longest.

Kev, I see a Christian - CM Punk coming from this tournament and possibly going all the way to Wrestlemania, setting up the Christian's draft to Smackdown. Do you think it is a possibility? That would be a tremendous program!
