A live perspective on Raw: DX Army takes over
If there’s one thing that I took from watching Raw Monday night at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena, it’s how over DX was. Every time the DX music hit, the crowd roared and neon green glow sticks were everywhere.
Some people may have grown tired of DX’s act, but after seeing that reaction, but I would milk it for as long as possible. I don’t think even John Cena got as big of a pop (but it was close).
I think it’s a good possibility that Shawn Michaels and Triple H will face each other at WresteMania XXVI and DX will be put on the back-burner. But I’m sure there will come another day when WWE needs a spark and the middle-aged degenerates will be there to answer the call again. And I’m down with that.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
I enjoyed Raw overall, even though there was nothing that really stood out. I rarely ever have a bad time at a live show, although I realize that watching on TV is a lot different. I’m interested to see what those who watched on TV thought of it. ...
When I first heard that Verne “Mini-Me” Troyer was going to be hosting Raw in my hometown, I was pretty disappointed. I would rather have seen someone with a Baltimore connection such as the Ravens’ Ray Lewis or former WWE diva Stacy Keibler. With that being said, however, I didn’t think Troyer was bad at all. His confrontation with The Miz was hilarious. There were actually people there marking out for Troyer. Surprisingly – but thankfully – there wasn’t much interaction between Troyer and Hornswoggle. By the way, I wasn’t too upset that Little People’s Court was pushed back to next week. ...
I’ve seen where some in the Internet Wrestling Community have been critical of how the Randy Orton-Kofi Kingston match was booked. Specifically, they didn’t agree with Kingston being pinned while WWE is still trying to elevate him up to Orton’s level. Personally, I think it went down exactly as it should have, with Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. attacking Kingston before the match and Orton finishing him off. Kingston already has gotten the better of Orton on several occasions, so it was time for Orton to get some of his heat back. That give-and-take is needed to build up the feud. Plus, the message here was that Orton viewed Kingston as a threat, so he had his henchmen soften him up before he faced him. I don’t see how that hurts Kingston...
The Triple H-Chris Jericho match was a solid bout between two pros. The match, as well as the opening verbal confrontation between DX and Jericho and The Big Show, did a nice job of selling their match at TLC. ...
Unless my ears were deceiving me, Cena didn’t get as much of a mixed reaction as usual. My theory is that the Cena detractors care so little about Sheamus that they actually would like to see Cena beat him. Sheamus got heat from the crowd, but I think it was more go-away heat than Orton-type heat. ...
The interaction between Cena and Carlito (yes, he’s still with the company) was good. When Sheamus came out, it seemed like he took all the air out of the place. Even though Carlito hasn’t been on TV in a while and he has been booked mostly as a jobber to the stars, I think a lot of people would rather see him get a title shot than Sheamus. ...
Santino Marella was in top form on the mic. I laughed out loud when he told Sheamus that he was “not so smart person” for focusing so much on “John Chayna” and overlooking him. Sheamus did a great job of no-selling Marella’s comedy. It was a good idea to have Sheamus destroy an underneath guy that the fans really like such as Marella in an effort get people to love to hate Sheamus. I’m not saying it worked, just that it was a good idea. ...
I’m a fan of Mark Henry as the fun-loving babyface, so I thought his rap and dance moves were pretty entertaining. Since he pinned U.S. champion The Miz in a non-title match, I suppose he’ll be getting a title shot. ...
The women’s tag match that pitted Maryse and Jillian Hall against Melina and Gail Kim wasn’t bad. Not surprisingly, Maryse pinned WWE Divas champion Melina to set up a likely program between the two. By the way, Maryse’s cover of Melina was a beautiful thing.

Comments
For the new PG rated RAW, Maryse was fitting of the Rated "R" Superstar! But why did she lay down right after her victory? Was she suffering from "Worthlessburger Syndrome"?
It was cool to see one of the best HORROR Makeup Artist on the East coast sitting behind the announce table, TOM SAVINI!
Lastly, how the heck does, "SMILEZ" in the Ravens jersey get in the front row yet again?

I'm also a big fan of Mayse's covering style.
I agree that Orton winning was the right move. Actually, my problem is that I think Orton should have won clean. A year ago he was one of the strongest wrestlers in WWE; but since the Legacy angle started, it seems like he's lost a lot of his luster. He still wins, and gets lots of heat (the good kind), so maybe it's just me. Still, I'd like to see a return to the Orton of old, who didn't have to rely on a couple of rookies to get things done. My guess is that after his program with Kingston, Orton will feud with DiBiase. Not sure where that leaves Rhodes, as he's obviously the odd-man-out in that situation. Probably a brand switch so that he doesn't get forgotten while Orton and DiBiase grab the attention, and a run at a minor title.
I forgot just how tiny Troyer is, and putting him with Mark Henry only emphasised his diminutive size. He was a better host than I expected. Not great, but we've seen much worse.

So you liked Mark Henry's Rap, yet can't stand CRYME TYME?!?!?!?!?!
Mark Henry couldn't "rap" a birthday present. Vanilla Ice thought he was terrible. John Cena wanted him to stop. Christian and his peeps (Go and take a stroll, Canada in the house, and that's the way I roll) thought he was horrible.
**ok enough playing for the comment of the week**
I understand the whole point was that he can't rap. But that was really really painful.
Personally, I think MVP and Mark Henry would make much better heels. They could almost be an "urban" version of Jeri-Show. With Henry being the unstoppable Giant and MVP the arrogant frontman.
As much as it seems as if WWE is moving towards a Michaels/HHH Wrestlemania, it would be cool to see them win the Tag Titles, thus giving THEM the opportunity to wrestle on all brands. I would like to see them on Smackdown and ECW every once in a while.

Guarantee Kofi will be wrestling Cody next week.

Watched it on TV - and it seemed like one continuous promo for the next pay-per-view event. How about more action and less talk? I doubt anyone's tickets were cheap.

Hello Kevin
Can you please confirm or deny some of these rumors floating around?
Is it true that...
- When Tiger Wood's entered his vehicle last week, the Undertaker was in the Driver's seat and exclaimed "Where to Stephanie!" which led to the crash...
-Tony Atlas was suspended for 30 days under the Wellness Policy for his addiction to Laughing Gas...
-At an Independent Show in Lowell, MA last Saturday, The Boogeyman tried eating Scotty Too Hotty when Scotty was performing the "Worm"...
-Mark Henry and Mae Young's son "Hand" just signed a developmental deal...
-Upon his return to the ring in 2010, and to satisfy stockholders and the younger audience demographic, Edge will now be known as the Rated PG Superstar...
-During a traffic stop in Norfolk Sunday night, Virginia State Police were baffled that Mike Chioda was identified on his drivers license as "The Official in the Ring"...
-At Thanksgiving dinner last week Vince McMahon was so enraged when his 4 year old granddaughter spilled her juice on his carpet that he exclaimed " I STRIKE DOWN ON THE FACE OF DEFIANCE!!!" and ordered an I Quit Match between the two for the next Pay Per View...
-In staying with the current trend of theme Pay Per Views, WWE is scrapping the Royal Rumble and changing it to "WWE SuperPole", nothing but "on a pole matches"...

OK...I think the WWE missed the boat with Mark Henry..I thought the arms rise-imploring the crowd to cheer was cool but of course that was too spontaneous for WWE creative who needs black babyfaces to sing, rap and have phony accents.
Did we really need subtitles for Hornswaggle? But I admit I marked hard in laughter for the Troyer-'Swaggle handpound. Troyer saying you should sue them for everything had me rolling..
The Jericho/Big Show/Dx verbal sparring was funny as heck...I still don't know why there is so much hate for the Big Show. He is a great worker and good on the mic.

God forbid Triple H appearing on all three brands when it's already sickening enough to see him in one.

This will be my longest post ever here Eck.
My sons and I (21,23 and 47) attended last night and had a different view of the night then you had, we were in section 310, 2nd row, which gave us a center ring view. We've sat all over the arena for show, this was our 1st time upstairs and we actually liked the view, except for 1 time when the beer man stood at the rail watching Verne and Miz. Since I don't drink I didn't care about hurting his feelings and let him know he had to move (the ushers apparently disappear during the show upstairs.
I won't spoil the 2 early matches for SS but did Masters look like he had big ole women boobs cause that what it looked like to us, especially when he bounced some on the ramp.
Who did Chavo piss off, losing to midgets and out of shape wrestlers.
I don't have cable so I don't see RAW regularly but Santino was even funnier then I've heard, he could never win again and still work forever. All Sheamus needs to know is Cena gets everything because he's got IT and is IT while Sheamus is just a nobody that no one cares about.
I never thought much of Big Show on the mic but hearing him live last night he was a lot better then I ever remember hearing him.
As far as the womens match, my only thoughts were too bad Mickie is on SD and why couldn't we at least be seeing Kelly Kelly. Oh, and I remember what you say of Gail and was hoping you were on our side of the arena since we have the backside view of her while she was waiting to get in the ring.
On Verne, I remember thinking, wow, they haven't even had the guest host on yet, guess WWE realized it wasn't a great choice. I will say WWE used him well, very little and never the real focus of any scene.
I loved that Kofi got the double beatdown, unlike some I don't care for the character. When he got ambushed the 2nd time I started laughing out loud, I took it as funny how WWE set it up.
I didn't always like Orton but he is a great talent and what happened after the show went off the air just impressed me even more, Orton really showed another side, it was somewhat comical acting on his part, showed his range even better.
Never liked Henry, always thought his character is bland but I think WWE really hit on something last night, they made me like Henry last night and believe he can be really entertaining. Yes, I was up, clapping my hands and moving to the rythm of the music..., well, as good as a fat old white boy can. I'd love to see Henry come out if WWE keeps this up for him. Oh, and I'm one that hates it when I hear the 1st note of What's Up, I change the channel.
What can I say about Jericho, I've liked him from the 1st time I saw him appear on the national scene, just wish he would have come up with some better names to call all of last night. When he came out I told my sons I couldn't wait to hear what he came up with to call us but I was disappointed but with that only.
DX. Like you said, they are over, my sons and I wondered how much WWE makes from those cheap glow sticks, must be a lot. I do have to say I like HHH's solo entry better then his DX entry though, a lot more intense.
Have to point out that Undertaker recieved a big pop every time they showed him in a video before the start of the show.
Now, from upstairs Cena came the biggest and loudest roar of the night when he came out. It was the only time all of the upstairs jumped to their feet together all night. It was great that WWE had Cena just crush Carlito because like Cena said, wrong man, wrong time, so Cena had to be untouchable last night and WWE did that.
I like Miz, always have because of his time on Real World, Mike was a good natured country boy and likeable and if you remember that's where we 1st heard of 'The Miz' and the kid made his dream come true, gotta love that.
Sheamus equals complete and utter silence, the guy has the kiss of death for an entertainer, no heat and no fans. His accent seemed to go in and out last night also.
We really enjoyed the show and we think it's hard to find a bad seat in the arena, oh, and the seats upstairs seemed wider the the ones downstairs and that was 1st pointed out by my youngest son who's a skinny 135lb 6'2" guy.
Did you notice the 3-4 empty seats in the front row behing the announcers, off to their left some? While waiting to get in a scalper was telling everyone he had front row seats, no one was buying, wondering if they were his and he had to eat the cost. If so I'd be happy, I'd like to see all scalpers take a bath in the business and let real fans get a better shot at the seats they want.

Nice to see an old style promo by Cena where he really looked like he was pushed past his limit and whipped into a frenzy.
This is much better for him than the play acting persona, where he goes back and forth between amateur comedy and his aggressive persona.
Posted by: Mark | December 1, 2009 11:58 PM
I had fun live. I'm sure I probably would have hated watching it on TV.
Kevin, I think you should have mentioned in your report when you clothes-lined that seven year old for one of HBK's wristbands. That was unfortunate.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Come on, I would never do anything like that. I did, however, super-kick a 6-year-old for his glow stick.

Seeing Verne on that stool brought back the terrible childhood memory of a certain ill-fated egg.
Posted by: Phillip Reynolds | December 2, 2009 12:19 AM
What did Jack Swagger do to get buried like he is now? If anything, he should have been elevated to #1 contender, not this Sheamus character.
Posted by: Shawn Patrick | December 2, 2009 12:52 AM
You seemed to enjoy being surrounded by sycophants and germ incubators. Did HBK get you good seats?
Posted by: T_SUM | December 2, 2009 2:21 AM
i think the main reason for this wwe title program at tlc is not only to build sheamus - but more to use him in reviving john cena. i think he did excellent promos these past two weeks.
and if the ppv was cheap ($5) -id buy it.
im also amazed at how great the miz is getting (in ring too)
although that seemed to come to a dead stop after working with mark henry.
their match btw was cut short on the tv show.
miz was eblowing him in the corner, but was then teleported to a sitting position on rope/end stage of his run up clothesline.
also, on tv, the crowd seemed absolutley dead while carlito walked down the ramp - and the commentry was turned up.
i really hate that

Interesting episdoe of RAW. for me the funniest part was when Santino ripped on Lameass for his lack of skin pigmentation.
All of that promo rang true.
Flt like Miz owned it and was great during his Austin Powers promo. Eck is it true he is one lucky boy and dating Maryse? Bcause that is my dream!
As for Mark Henry I like the guy but there is only one man in WWE who should rap and that is 'the captain'
regarding carlito, he has always had good chemistry with cena and regardless of his attitude, a program between the 2 could have great potential.

Well from watching it at home, Troyer was the WORST guest host. He was awful and I thought his segments were terrible. He added nothing to the show. Still better than having Ray Lewis though!
Posted by: Deetz | December 2, 2009 8:49 AM
Can anybody tell me why Maryse lied on the ring after winning???? i do love her attitude.
Posted by: iron mike sharpe | December 2, 2009 10:55 AM
I thought it was one of the worst Raws ever. I was however happy to read about the Dark ending skit. At least there was some entertainment that night. Minny Me is so played out. But I did like the HBK line from Airplane the movie " Don't worry I speak Leprichon".
Posted by: Patrick Johnson | December 2, 2009 10:58 AM
I want Maryse to cover me like that!!!
Posted by: GMAN | December 2, 2009 1:15 PM
The line of the night came from Big Show on commentary, referring to the upcoming tables match (to Shawn Michaels):
"I can't wait to make you eat wood!"
I'm not kidding, he really said that. What a knucklehead.

I usually go to all wrestling shows in Baltimore and I have to say...I'm glad I decided not to go to this one. There was bits of good stuff, but mostly it was hard to watch for me. I thought the Mark Henry rap segment was horrible for starters. There was literally like 20 minutes of matches in a 2 hour program (maybe a little over if you count the Sheamus-Marella incident as a match). The HHH-Jericho match was good, but nothing a longtime WWE fan hasn't seen.
I heard that we are getting the Backlash ppv, so I'll probably get a ticket for that if it's as good as the Backlash that was here at 1st Mariner Arena last year. At least with that, you know you're getting all matches and no filler (and hopefully no cheap-dq & countout finishes

Wonder if the reaction that Sheamus is getting will convince McMahon to add another wrestler to that title fight with Cena.
Posted by: Jack Windham | December 2, 2009 4:26 PM
It certainly is a different experience live, I'll grant you that, because I channel surfed more than I watched this episode. Tired of DX (it pains me to say that), and of the guest host stuff.
I'm all for pushing talent, pushing young talent, and even pushing young talent to the top at an accelerated pace "if they have the ability to draw"...Sheamus can't draw a cartoon, much less a dollar. We're in for a long, bumpy ride, my friends.
Posted by: FLOW | December 2, 2009 5:24 PM
The Baltimore crowd was particularly hot throughout the show...apart from when Sheamus appeared - such a painful silence came over when he was beating down Santino...
I think Verne pulled a Floyd Mayweather on you guys though, 45 minutes before he shows up and he's on the phone!
Posted by: Andy | December 2, 2009 5:42 PM
HHH cut a pretty lame promo at the top of the show; that 'grabbing life by the throat' garbage probably made all the 10 year old Cena fans throw up in their mouths....and then he contridicted himself by saying it 'didnt matter' that DX has never been Tag champs, but then talks about how DX is gonna 'make history' again...
When Jericho whispered to Show he probably said...oh great i have to job to HHH again...
Mark Henry's first line in his rap was "only 5 in this industry have my tenure"....then why is he still doing lame promos and fighting for the US and ECW titles??
Why do they have to do the same exact story line with Kingston/Orton+Legacy that theyve done with HHH and Cena??...although I dont think ive ever seen Orton get to the ring so fast.
In the times we're in I don't really care for athletes comparing what they do 'preparing for war'....WWE should know better since they've done shows overseas.
I wonder after what Carlito said we might see a bunch of guys help Sheamus win...e.g. when Yokozuna beat Undertaker in a casket match years ago when a bunch of mid-carders came out to help Yokozuna win.
The main event was good as expected between Jericho /HHH...and Show/HBK had a good back and forth at the announce table during the match. I also liked the ending b/c usually the heels win matches when the stipulation is that there is to be a hanidcap match the next week.
Posted by: eee | December 2, 2009 6:45 PM
Was John Cena's anger warranted? He was acting like Sheamus just ran over his favorite pet. Sheamus put him through a table last week...so? Someone goes through a table every other week in TNA. Is Cena supposed to be untouchable?

Once they decide that Sheamus isn't getting over with the fans as well as they want him to, they could have him start spitting during promos, bleach his hair, and then reintroduce him as "Captain Spew Albino".

" -In staying with the current trend of theme Pay Per Views, WWE is scrapping the Royal Rumble and changing it to "WWE SuperPole", nothing but "on a pole matches".."
Like have a " Maryse On A Pole" match...namely my pole!
I do apologize for that...
