It’s vintage Ozzy on Raw
As a matter of full disclosure and before you read any further, I confess to being a big Ozzy Osbourne fan. I still have my ticket stub from the first time I saw Ozzy in concert in 1982 at The Baltimore Civic Center (and the most recent time I saw him live last year at Verizon Center in Washington).
So while Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s stint as guest hosts on Raw Monday admittedly wasn’t great, I always find Ozzy entertaining, and being both an Ozzy fan and a wrestling fan, I thought it was cool to see the two entities cross paths.
Sure, Ozzy called Evan Bourne “Evan Braun,” a flub that is even funnier since it’s so close to his own name, but being clueless and speaking in an unintelligible manner is a big part of Ozzy’s shtick (it is a shtick, isn’t it?). Plus, the way Bourne has been booked as a jobber as of late, it seems fitting that his name would be mispronounced. It’s certainly not as bad as Cowboy Thorton, Kofi Johnston and Summerfest.
As for the the “Raw’s Got Talent” segment, it did fall a bit flat, but Chris Masters’ pecs keeping time with the Ozzy classic “Crazy Train” was hilarious. Masters’ chest has more personality than he does.
Sharon constantly saying “really” in the opening segment was “really” annoying, and I was expecting more from Ozzy’s interaction with Chris Jericho. I can’t believe there was no mention of Fozzy.
As you can see, Monday’s show could have been better. But for all the little negatives, there was one big positive:
The freakin’ “Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, was on Raw!
One last thought on Ozzy: A live performance by him and his band would have really added to the show. In fact, I don’t know why WWE wouldn’t have all of its musical guest hosts perform.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
The non-title triple threat main event between WWE champion John Cena, Jericho and The Big Show was average at best. You can see that WWE is making an effort to restore Jericho’s credibility since he is challenging for the world heavyweight title at the Survivor Series pay-per-view on Nov. 22. After pinning Kane on Smackdown Friday, he pinned Cena on Raw and then laid out Triple H after the match. Sure, it was Big Show who actually did the damage on Cena and Triple H, but whatever. At least Jericho is winning matches again. ...
It was funny how Shawn Michaels and Triple H both remarked about being yelled out and instructed what to say by as voice in their headsets while doing commentary during the main event, obvious shots at Vince McMahon and his reputation for being overbearing with the commentators during the broadcast. ...
Sheamus’ powerbomb on Jamie Noble outside the ring was sick. Noble is crazy for taking that bump. It’s clear that the powers that be in WWE are going to do everything possible to get Sheamus over. At least for now, I’m not sold him being an impact player. We all want to see new stars being created, but Sheamus would not be my first choice. ...
When the Randy Orton-Kofi Kingston match was announced for the show, I didn’t really expect it to happen, so I wasn’t surprised when it was turned into a six man with Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes joining Orton, and MVP and Mark Henry joining Kingston. It would be crazy not to wait until Survivor Series to do Orton-Kingston. ...
The crowd was hot for the six-man, and Kingston, MVP and Henry got nice pops. The babyfaces going over was a good call. ...
The Miz-Bourne match was good. Even though Bourne lost again, he did look like more of a threat than he has as of late. It’s a shame that Bourne isn’t being used better, but Miz winning here was the right call. Miz definitely is on the rise. ...
And so it continues: Gail Kim was the first one eliminated in a six-woman battle royal to determine the No. 1 contender for Melina’s WWE Divas title. It wasn’t like wrestlers the caliber of Mickie James, Beth Phoenix and Natalya were in the match, either. The other five participants were Alicia Fox (who won), Kelly Kelly, Eve and The Bella Twins. I’m convinced Kim is going to turn on Kelly Kelly. ...
Hornswoggle dressed up as Jack Osbourne was funny. He actually showed a lot of guts getting so close to Ozzy. Back in the ’80s, Ozzy’s theatrical stage show involved doing some bad things to little people. I’m sure a lot of fans wouldn’t have minded seeing Ozzy do them to Hornswoggle.

Comments
Last night's show was reasonably good, no major complaints...
After seeing them replay the Swagger interference on the Miz's match last week, i realized how much i would love to see those two interact with each other. It was great to see Bourne get in as much offense as he did, it was a pretty good match to watch, didn't make his job seem so bad.
Jamie Noble got wrecked, wow, I don't know if he sold that really well or really was hurt, but wow. As much as i really dislike the celtic warrior, he showed he can stomp a jobber like the best of em. I want to see him run "rough shot' over other people on Raw now.
I was really hoping in the Raw's got talent portion that we would see Santino and Jericho, 1/2 ain't bad, but I would have loved to have seen Jericho come out with Fozzy and tell Ozzy that he sucks compared to Fozzy, then Ozzy could have come back with a live performance, that would have had me glued to my set and get volume complaints from all the neighbors, both bands are great.
So it looks to me like you have to be 2 feet taller or 2 feet shorter than Chavo to fight him.
Hornswaggle seems like he needs a male authority figure in his life with him being Finlay's son, and acting like Ozzy's son.
I loved the segue after the Divas' match where they replayed the powerbomb on Noble and talked about how serious it was, then said, it's been a fantastic night on Raw, a truly great segue if there ever was one, lol.
As sick and tired of DX as I am, they were highly amusing on commentary last night with all of their inside jokes about the industry.
I was very happy to see Jerishow stay together as well as they did, I know a lot of people doubted them as a team, but I think they are great, they interact very well with each other in the ring.

The reason the guest host don't sing or perform is the WWE would have to pay (and pay big) to have them do this. They are getting these host for free, in exchange for them doing a personal advertisement.
Noble selling that powerbomb would have been more sick had it been concrete (like Vader did to Cactus Jack). Sheamus is only getting pushed because of the European crowd, and Europeans especially the British love to hate Irish heels.
And why is Legacy again on another losing streak?

Yeah talking incoherently(yes that is a shtick) and not remembering parts of your life due to drug use is so entertaining. Ozzie sucks and I hope this is the last time I see him hosting anything WWE related. I really like the push Kofi is getting. I wish they could get the D-X program over as soon as possible. I'm tired of having them pushed down my throat when most of their programs have no payoff. And their a little too old to be doing the D-X characters.
I like the where the Miz character is going. What is the point of Hornswoggle? He has outlived his usefullness by about 7 months.

"I’m sure a lot of fans wouldn’t have minded seeing Ozzy do them to Hornswoggle."
Don't you know that good things stopped happening since the 80's.
So, Oz doesn't even know Jericho and he thinks Jericho is a joke. Not very smart, considering the fact that Jericho is one of the biggest star of the company and the #1 contender for title.

With so many minutes of Raw dedicated to Sheamus and his dissection of Noble, if he fails to get heat he'll have nobody to blame but himself. WWE's certainly doing their part on the booking end of things.
When Show crashed into the turnbuckles and Triple H said "Vintage Big Show!" I couldn't help but LOL. Vintage D-X.
I thought that Chavo's singing voice wasn't horrible, but I'm not sure whether that's because it is in fact not horrible or because an earful of Jillian can make just about anything that follows it sound good.

Masters’ chest has more personality than he does.
You could say that about most of the Divas on the roster as well.
Posted by: Jon | November 3, 2009 8:18 PM
You're right about that powerbomb to Noble - that was insanely brutal. Any word on any consequential injuries, or was Noble just selling it brilliantly? He seemed in a pretty bad way.
Also, don't you think that WWE missed a trick in that segment? If some mid-card babyface (such as Primo - he's not doing anything right now) had come to Noble's rescue in the middle of his beatdown, then Sheamus could have a new legitamate feud against someone who isn't so low down on the roster.

I don't know what bad things Ozzy did to midgets but I ceriantly would not mind seeing them done to hornswaggle. Is it me or has DX become the biggest beating to watch, they are simply not funny and boring. I am really happy to see Kofi getting his well deserved push, I really hope WWE does not drop the ball on this one. Sheamus makes a good heel, but I feel that he is being pushed to fast before he can actually be taken seriously. I wonder if his push has anything to do with him being buddies with Hunter. Ozzy was fine and more coherent then I ever remember him being. Overall it was a good Raw, and it's always good when Jericho gets a win.

Kev, heard you on BTR. It was my first time hearing your commentary.
Sad for Evan Bourne, the WWE could have a big star on their hands...if they wanted one.
Love that Alicia Fox!
Those flubs by the Osbourne's proves that this guest host thing has to stop. BTW isnt Evan BOURNE close enough to osBOURNE. That name should have been hard for them to miss. Don't get me wrong, I actually thought they did a decent job overall.
When will we see the Keltic Worrior faction start, i.e. Finlay, Shamus & Drew. They are a faction waiting to happen! Finlay could give them a good rub and leadership.

I'm split between thinking, (1) "Kevin is right about the whole Gail Kim thing..." and, (2) "...but he is kind of obsessing about it."
Posted by: Stephen | November 3, 2009 8:33 PM
I'm not always fond of the DX shenanigans but they were on tonight. The DX commentary was golden and even the little backstage nonsense with Hornswoggle and Cena was good.
"Raw's Got Talent" was generally lame with a less-than-impressive Santino performance and a predictable Jillian gimmick appearance. However the Masters "performance art" was surprisingly entertaining and I do think the celebrity hosts work better when there's something that actually relates to them such as this segment or the "Price is Raw" stuff with Bob Barker.

With apologies to Jack Swagger, I watched Monday Night Football instead in order to see if The Saints' winning streak would remain intact.

I thought the segment with Cena, HBK and HHH was hilarious, with them discussing who beat who
Posted by: RBL | November 3, 2009 11:23 PM
Was I the only one incredibly bothered by that idiotic 'fan' during the Noble-Sheamus bit. That guy, in my view, hurt Sheamus with his incessant jackassery. It was Sheamus's biggest heat-earning moment yet, and it was largely overshadowed by that moron.

Apparently the Dibiase-Orton angle from a few weeks ago was just a vivid dream I was having.
Posted by: Elevation | November 4, 2009 12:54 AM
i guesse being an ozzy fan can really make you overlook how bad a show was. cus this one was terrible. the only good was jerichos section, which like you said could of been better but still, he seems to be in a good posistion where hes got a lot of input creatively in what he does, he really is holding the show up by himself.
Posted by: ultimate_krang | November 4, 2009 2:39 AM
Another flop of a guest host week. I like Ozzie (saw him at Oz-fest awhile back with Rob Zombie before he caught the directing bug) but it is clear that he and Sharon know nothing about wrestling.
Sharon called Kofi Kingston "Kobe."
DX making fun of people and "the industry" wow, how original. People making fun of Cole...again, how original.
I am so tired of John Cena and wished he would never have the belt again. Every time he cuts a promo in the ring it is the same thing over and over again. Starts out in the melodramatic voice, then starts screaming his head off like a preacher. His move set stinks, he's horrible, and he's boring.
The Diva Battle Royal was pointless. It hardly took any time, The Bella twins were in contention for a title shot if they might have won, even though this was their first action in months? Most of the eliminations came on somewhat fouled up moves that had them rolling out on the apron or just through the bottom rope?
Jericho is one of the only ones holding the show together. He's always been good at what he does as a face or a heel, and right now the WWE needs some really good heels.
Why was RAW promoting the Batista/Mysterio feud from Smackdown on their show, especially just after bragging rights?
Vance Armstrong on ECW = not impressive at all.
Posted by: The Mythical One | November 4, 2009 3:11 AM
Geez they need to stop with the battle royals for the women! Can't creative ever come up with anything new? It was no secret Alicia Fox was going to win. They need more heels on RAW. I've given up hope Gail Kim will ever get a push but at least Fox seems to be really good, Kelly Kelly has had some good matches to recently on Superstars!

does anyone have a presale code for wrestlemania? eck... you've gotta have a hookup right? i want great seats for what might possibly be shawn's last 'mania.

Thought this show was pretty good and I thought Ozzy and Sharon did a good job of hosting, certainly better than those Nascar nobodies last week. One thing I didn't get though, it seemed a bit silly to me that during the opening segment, the wrestlers were wispering into Ozzy and Sharon's ears about who to put in what matches. I thought the whole point of the guest host format is that we are supposed to believe that they make the matches themselves..oh well, I can let it go.
I was hoping that the Orton/Kingston match wasn't going to happen on Raw, as I think Kingston deserves a spot on the Survivor Series Pay-Per-View with WWE's top heel. Thankfully, the match was made a six-man affair, which gave Henry and MVP some more credibility, pinning Legacy for the second week in a row.
I thought for sure that when I saw Jack Swagger, err, swagger down to ringside during the Divas Battle Royal, Eve was going to go over and get a Divas Title shot, which could then lead to some kind of relationship between Swagger and Eve, which could've perhaps culminated in Jack costing her the title by accident, thus the break down of the relationship begins. I'm pretty sure that's the most thought anyone's put into constructing something for the Divas in years :)
Thought the Raw's Got Talent segment was a bit painful at times, and how random was the inclusion of the Great Khali? His presence just wasn't explained at all. And I can safely say that the Chris Masters 'musical pecks' thing is definitely the best thing I've seen from the Masterpiece in his entire career. One opening match at Wrestlemania doesn't cut it for me, Chris.
Really looking forward to Ricky Hatton hosting next week in my homeland of the United Kingdom. Hopefully he'll be better than his boxing counterpart, Floyd 'Money' Mayweather.
And finally, the biggest shocker of all: I actually thought DX was really funny on commentary during the main event. Their comments about McMahon screaming in their ears were great.
Posted by: Paul | November 4, 2009 6:38 AM
btw. I'm about 95% sure that Sharon called Kofi Kingston, Kobe Kingston too. Its not like they had to remember it for longer than 3 seconds. DX was whispering what to say in their ears.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Several people have pointed out the Kobe thing. I missed it.

Easiest way to get Sheamus over as a heel with the kids is for him to punish Hornswoggle for crimes against Irishness.
Posted by: David | November 4, 2009 8:28 AM
Raw is perpetually lame. DX is too old to act like teenagers. Nobody gets developed properly. Nobody puts anyone over, except Jericho, possibly the greatest heel they have. The guest hosts are so weak. I'll also add that anyone who calls Ozzy Osbourne, the brain dead reality TV idiot the "prince of darkness" should be forced to listen to 24 hours of Slayer, and if you don't see the weakness of RAW, you should be forced to watch 24 hours of hornswaggle. Also, if DX's book is unauthorized, why are they and WWE pushing it...
Posted by: Jeff A | November 4, 2009 8:41 AM
I can't recall a single "guest host" who wasn't a drag on the show. It's a gimmick that only works if you get the right people, and WWE has been picking a whole lot of wrong people.
As for Seamus... the whole "introduce a new star with a series of squash matches" thing is just tiresome. It doesn't help establish a new wrestler, because it doesn't confer any credibility. I like rob's suggestion of a Celtic alliance, which could give some instant payoff for Seamus and Drew.

i've been watchin wretsling for countless years, and i understand the "entertainment" gigs i.e. celebrities and athletes to spread the word even to a much wider audience, but a mere few mintues after raw had started, i really really REAAAALLY REEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAALLLLY wanted to change the channel!!!

RESPONSE FROM KE: Who?

Dude!! Noble taking that job was insane. I'm sure he really got hurt, and if he didn't, he should have. It would be perfect to see McIntyre and Sheamus right now. But my daughter, the WWE diva she wants to be, says Drew is on Smackdown. I think that was the best opening segment this year. Every two sentences....CLANG....someone else showed up to whine. As or next week, Hatton?? puh-lease. Diva daughter and me saw Raw in Vegas, and we feel truly ripped off. Mayweather was non-existent, so bringing another boxer to the front? hopefully, it will be worse. And...triple threats are a wate of time unless its a PPV and for a title. PS....Battista, I got 2 words for ya!!! and i aint no DX fan either

Sheamus is so pale I had to watch his match with sunglasses. DX's commentary was "vintage"ly funny

I still say guys like Jamie Noble, Charlie Haas, Chavo etc..should team up and revive the 'Job Squad' circa Al Snow

Hello
Hey I am also a huge fan of Ozzy osbourne. Its really very good post on him and I've liked it very much.Thank you very much for sharing this post with us.
Posted by: compléments alimentaires | November 5, 2009 12:22 AM
Watching Jamie Noble get squashed without getting in one bit of offense reminded me of WWF Wrestling Challenge or Superstars from two decades ago. And that's not a good thing.
Perhaps Noble and Chavo should give their notices and take their considerable talents somewhere else where they could be treated with a modicum of respect. Gail Kim, another wasted talent, should join them.
Ozzie was hard to hear and appeared to be mumbling most of the evening.
Jericho is the one guy who brings out the best in these guest hosts. I think the format would not have worked as well as it has without him.
The segment with Orton's new car was based on a silly construct, although I like this new, more aggressive, Kofi.
Posted by: Mark | November 5, 2009 5:06 PM
Sheamus' powerbomb on Jamie Noble reminded me of the powerbomb that Vader gave to Cactus Jack in WCW (you know, the event that started all those terrible vignettes about Cactus Jack being lost in Cleveland or wherever).
Posted by: Cliff | November 5, 2009 5:38 PM
Soda Popinski, so random with the Punchout! reference.
I don't think Noble was buried per se. I think to take a bump like that, you have to feel you're doing your job putting someone over like that. Chavo I think just enjoys kidding around. He gets a spot each week with the celebrities. Not a bad spot to be in.
It's nice to see Kofi turn the corner. He's still not my fav, but he's definitely making the most of his opportunity so far. Still weird that they finally announce him from Sierra Leone, but he comes out to the Jamaican music still and has the Jamaican themed logo on his tights.
I loved DX on commentary. I'm sure it was scripted, but it reminded me of the days when they really would just ad lib like that and you'd just know Vince was breaking something.
I thought it was a fun show that's making an effort to change things up.
Posted by: James C | November 5, 2009 10:32 PM
I thought Jericho's inexplicable little interview w Ozzy was the weakest of Jericho's interactions with the guests hosts. Oh well.
Why are Chris Masters' dancing pecs being buried?? They got over with the fans, Sharon loved 'em...
I think Sheamus is bad-ass and his squash of Jamie Noble, complete with the cackling, braying-drunk fan accompaniment, was awesomely ugly. I guess I do worry he's getting pushed too fast too soon, but I will happily take that over "no new talents pushed ever."
So glad MVP & Henry were who came to rescue Kofi... that was a pretty cool 3-on-3.
DX should stick to commentary and jokes. I am "really" tired of the incredible Michaels being HHH's valet. He looks so weak all the time. Why couldn't HHH be the one knocked out as soon as he stepped in the ring, for once?
