TNA Impact not for the faint of heart
For those who enjoy the sanguinary and salacious aspects of pro wrestling that have been eliminated from WWE programming, I hope you caught Thursday night’s episode of TNA Impact.
Among the highlight of the show: An attack by Mick Foley that resulted in Abyss’ face being covered with blood, which was spurting out of his head like a faucet; Rhino and Brother Devon busting each other open in an intense brawl; and Daffney feigning that she was going to perform a lewd act with Kevin Nash, who apparently likes to “get freaky” with female little people.
I think it’s a smart move for TNA to try to market itself as the hardcore alternative to the family-friendly WWE. Let’s face it: TNA is never going to beat WWE at its own game, so the company needs to differentiate itself as much as possible and carve out its own niche.
Just make sure you put the kids to bed before you watch it.
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
The final segment in which Foley destroyed Abyss was far more brutal than anything that will appear on WWE’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view a week from Sunday. As strong as the angle was, however, it was not without its flaws. First of all, it was way too early for Foley to turn on Abyss. The two weren’t together long enough for a breakup to mean anything. Beyond that, Foley is going back and forth from babyface to heel far too frequently, which is a sure-fire way to lessen fans’ interest in a character. The silence during the beat-down was telling, because it should have gotten a lot of heat. And the premise for the attack – Abyss supposedly broke the framed caricature drawing of Foley and Jeremy Borash – is ridiculous. Hopefully, there will be more to the story than that. ...
I’m really enjoying the feud between Rhino and Team 3-D. Rhino has been doing an awesome job since turning heel, and he, Brother Devon and Brother Ray are all very believable when it comes to projecting intensity. ...
The backstage scene with Nash, Lauren and two female little people was pretty funny. A classic line from Nash in regard to one of the diminutive women: “Imagine how big it’s going to look in her hands. Oh, get your mind out of the gutter. I’m talking about the wine glass.” I was surprised at how far TNA pushed the envelope with Nash and Daffney, and even more surprised that Nash got punked by Dr. Stevie. My only problem with all of this is that it makes Nash come off as a babyface. ...
The video package on A.J. Styles was very well done, as was the talking segment with Styles and Sting. ....
Matt Morgan comes across more like a star by the week. During the Morgan-Hernandez versus Kurt Angle-Eric Young match, there was a loud “We want Morgan!” chant. ...
The segments in which Foley and Borash were interrogating people they suspected of destroying their picture were amusing. It’s about time someone on the show mentioned how bad the Motor City Machine Guns’ entrance music is. ...
While Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal were being questioned by Foley and Borash, Creed said, “Jay and I have better things to do.” Really, like what? ...
Young was really good on the mic in his verbal confrontation with the Main Event Mafia. I like the fact that he didn’t back down from Angle or Booker T. ...
When the World Elite and MEM were having a standoff, I noticed that Nash wasn’t there. I suppose he was “busy” backstage. ...
The street fight between “D’Angelo Dinero and Suicide was entertaining, highlighted by a spot in which Dinero jumped off a chair and speared Suicide in mid-air as Suicide was doing a springboard off the ropes. The crowd was more into “The Pope” than they were Suicide. If that keeps up, Dinero is going to have to be turned babyface. ...
Alissa Flash delivered a heck of a beat-down on Hamada, including tossing her down the bleachers. The edits during the attack were annoying, though. I think Flash could be a standout in the women’s division if she is given an opportunity. ...
Bobby Lashley scored a quick (about a minute and a half) squash victory over Jethro Holliday. That’s exactly the way Lashley should be booked. ...
The Samoa Joe-Daniels-Homicide three-way match for the X Division title was good. What’s with the flaps on Joe’s tights, though? By the way, did anyone notice Vince Russo's cameo appearance during the match? He was the guy in the front row who handed Homicide a chair. Russo wasn't acknowledged by the announcers and the camera cut away quickly. ...
Taylor Wilde and Sarita make a nice babyface tag team. It’s too bad that Angelina Love is no longer with the company, because a program between Wilde and Sarita and the Beautiful People (Love and Velvet Sky) would have been good. ...
It’s good to see ODB with the Knockouts title. Her character is over and she deserves a title run. I just hope that her victory over Cody Deaner at Sunday’s No Surrender pay-per-view marked the end of the Deaner character. ...
Hey, Taz dressed up this week!

This show is going to continue to falls to new depths with Russo and Ed Ferrara in charge.
Kevin did you have any interaction with Ferrara in WCW?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I did. I thought Ed was a great guy. He started writing a column for the magazine during the last few months of the company and he was very easy to work with. After Russo went home, claiming that he had a concussion from a bump he took from Goldberg, Ferrera took over booking and the story lines were much more logical, although we all knew WCW was done by that point so it didn't really matter.

Not a bad show. Pretty amazing how over Morgan has gotten as the crowd was chanting his name when Hernandez was in there with Angle. Tomko was once this over and Russo screwed it up hopefully he learned his lesson. Daniels Vs Joe Vs Homicide was a really good match and really made Joe look like a monster. His new ring attire isn't all that great but it's better than the long pants look. I have no interest in a World Elite-M.E.M Feud. I can't imagine too many people do either. I wish Booker T would go away his promos are awful and his wrestling couldn't be less inspired. This Abyss-Foley feud and the reason for the feud is idiotic. The fans are more into Foley and Abyss turning heel and bringing back Mitchell as his manager would be a better idea but whatever. Sad to see two talents like Sabin and Shelley being wasted by really doing nothing. Pope and Suicide had another good match but really there's no real backlstory to the feud. Daphne never looked hotter than she looked today.
The Styles video clips and the Sting-Styles interview segment were excellent.

I like TNA more and more now. I think they have found a way to mix the new and older talent together in a nice fashion. If Sting is leaving in October it will be a fiting
Way to go out. Thanks for the Blog it's very much appreciated.

Did Taz leave the WWE for TNA just to do the same job?

I hate to bring up responses from a different topic, but this had me crying in my cubical and may be in my top ten responses on a web blog. "RESPONSE FROM KE: I would respond, but since you're not reading anymore it would be pointless. You're not still reading, are you? If you are, that would make you as big a hypocrite as your boy Bret." I love heel Eck. its to to end the face routine you got going. Reader for life Eckster!!

Kevin,
Once again, I enjoyed your commentary. I agree that TNA must distinguish itself from WWE; trying to copy it certainly hasn't worked. I'm a bit disappointed, however, with the Kevin Nash bits and the overt sexuality. When the WWE went that route, it alientated as many viewers as it brought in. I have no problem with the blood, although the Abyss match was almost tough to watch. I also think the bits make Kevin Nash look like a joke. That's just me.
I'm curious to know what your take is on the Motor City Machine Guns. Have we been subjected to all this nonsense because Alex Shelley is injured? Come on...first that ridiculous 1-800-6969 garbage. Then, for the next two weeks, we get "color" commentary from these guys. I think we saw Chris Sabin in action. But that was it. This young team seems to have it all going for them: good mic skills, excellent ring ability, nice looking. I really think if they would turn face, the crowd would go crazy. It seems like a total waste of talent for these two. What do you think?
Holden
RESPONSE FROM KE: I agree that TNA should be doing a lot more with the MCMG.
As for the overt sexuality, I know that it turns some fans off, but WWE gained a lot more fans than it lost during the Attitude Era.

I might have to make the switch to TNA. I am desperate for anything that is not PG WWE. The only problem is that Thursday night has a lot of great shows on at the same time of TNA. I wish TNA was on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I was a few days off. I predicted Russo would return at the PPV, but I never thought it would actually happen.

Yeah, Tiger Ali Singh paying the kielbasa queen $100 on RAW made me "wWe FoR LiFe".
I forgot about that.

Eck, did you notice during the 3 way x division match when Homicide went to the stands to get a chair who he got it from? It was none other than Vince Russo. Pretty funny actually. If you get a chance go back and watch it. Hes the guy in red.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I mentioned it near the bottom of the review.

The Alyssa Flash beat down of Hamada was fabulous. Tara (Victoria) leaving to mix it up with Kong was silly. If it was done further a story between her and ODB then there should have had some more antagonism when she came back to the ring. ODB really sold that pinning move because she stayed on her shoulders while Sarita and Wilde were celebrating.
Give me TNA anyday, especially if they use Matt Morgan properly.

TNA making an attempt to go old-school with its booking is the best news for the industry. Even though most of the industry has been exposed, the intensity you get from this approach kind of lets the fans forget about that.
Rumor has it Steiner may be retiring. A sad day indeed if true.

"FLAIR" - "Steiner may be retiring."
Kev , have you heard this one ?????
If it's true , I'm done , finished , with wrestling , finished with this blog .
....... Kevin now has his fingers crossed .
RESPONSE FROM KE: I haven't heard anything recently about him retiring. This is what he said when I interviewed him in May 2008:
Q: You mentioned that you considered retirement several years ago. How many more years do you see yourself wrestling, and what will you do after your career is over?
A: It’s hard to say. I’ve prepared from Day 1 to get out of the business, and now that it’s so close for me retiring, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. But as long as they want to pay you and keep you around, I hope I can go on long enough to where we start challenging WWE for ratings, one-one-one live. Yeah, [retirement] is close, and I have no idea what I’ll do to fulfill that void. When you do something as long as I have, you obviously love the sport – although not everything about the sport. It will be tough to replace that high that you get because you like to perform and give the fans what they want, or in my case, make the fans hate you. I’ve got a couple options, but I don’t think anything is going to replace wrestling.

true. tna will never make it big unless they take the early wcw approach by presenting themselves as the "hardcore" alternative to wwe. however the main hurdle that tna has to overcome to ever even think about making it big is its inability to market itself. people cant watch tna if they dont know it exists.

thanks for that reply kev !

Great blog. I wll take TNA over WWE any day. WWE is driving me crazy with there crazy PG programming. I can no longer take Chavo or Hornswaggle. They have toned down so much that they are now a cartoon. Kevin, since they are no longer allowed to have any blood how in the world are they going to have a HITC PPV? These matches are suppossed to be brutal and barbaric. With their new Disney approach I don't know how that will be possible. TNA is more adult oriented. Right now they are doing a great job making themselves different then WWE. I just wish more fans would watch their product.

Kevin Nash WAS in the ring when the World Elite and MEM were having a standoff.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm not talking about the verbal confrontation at the top of the show. I'm talking about the standoff after the Kurt Angle/Eric Young vs.Matt Morgan/Hernandez match. Steiner and Booker came out to back up Angle. No Nash.

I wonder how long the show can pull any ratings with the "non PG" rating. My recent venture to an ECW/SD show was more kids than adults. WWE has the right idea. Thought?

I was extremely entertained by this episode of iMPACT! The wrestling was good, but the interview segments were just off the charts.
Rhino and Team 3D were great in their segment. It makes me want to see where this is going.
Nash was absolutely hilarious. I wouldn't mind if they extended this segment out just a bit longer so that I can get more comedy from Nash.
Foley and Borash are a great comedic team. Things got even better when MCMG got involved in the segment. Foley has such great comedic chemistry with these guys. Reminds me of when he was doing comedy skits with Edge & Christian in WWE.

Yeah,Nash was great in his Big sexy World Tour promo.Plus he had Lauren to work with, she has that excellent "where am I and what am I doing here" look on her face that makes me wonder if sometimes she really doesnt know.Fine segment,TNA needs to do more off the wall stuff like that.
