The Ring Posts 20 Version 2.0
Last week I ranked the top 20 wrestlers of the past year by using the same criteria as The PWI 500. In other words, I regarded wrestling as legitimate competition, so the emphasis was on won-loss record, titles won and quality of opponents.
I ranked Triple H at No. 1 for a second straight year, which didn’t sit too well with a number of readers (nor did my inclusion of Vladimir Kozlov). There was a call for a list based more on performance, so I have come up with one.
The Ring Posts 20 Version 2.0 represents my ranking of the top 20 all-around performers during the period of Aug. 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009. It is based on in-ring ability, charisma, promo skills, star power and position on the card. I also took activity into account. For this list, wrestling is treated as entertainment, so wins and losses are not really a factor.
Once again, let the arguments commence.
1. CHRIS JERICHO
2. RANDY ORTON
3. SHAWN MICHAELS
4. EDGE
5. KURT ANGLE
6. JEFF HARDY
7. CM PUNK
8. TRIPLE H
9. JOHN CENA
10. THE UNDERTAKER
11. STING
12. REY MYSTERIO
13. CHRISTIAN
14. MVP
15. NIGEL MCGUINNESS
16. A.J. STYLES
17. BATISTA
18. JEFF JARRETT
19. JACK SWAGGER
20. KOFI KINGSTON

I like this list much better. 1 & 2 are right on. #3 however.....oh, forgot it is your list.

If we look aside the fact that you are a Shawn Michaels mark, how can he be on the list, or at least, over MVP and Edge, who both is quite good workers, and been on tv the whole period, all though MVP wasn't so much on TV
Posted by: martin | September 3, 2009 7:51 AM
With the exception of Kurt Angle being rated higher than 10, the list is on the mark!

I can't complain too much about these rankings except for one glaring oversight: NO SANTINO MARELLA?!!!!!
Also, since this list is based on entertainment value, there's no reason not to include women and non-wrestlers. In that case, I'd have to include Vickie Guerrero, Angelina Love and Don West.
Posted by: Don | September 3, 2009 8:34 AM
What? No spot for Jessie Neal? It's an outrage!!!

Erm... Kevin??? Where's Morrison?!
Him and Miz were the best tag team of the year last year, and the Dirt Sheet was fantastic every week, they even feuded with DX for a short while. They were multiple time tag team champions and had a good series of matches with the Colons.
Then they split and Morrison has only got better, he's won 90% of his matches since joining Smackdown, he's beaten a world champion twice, and put on a fantastic match with Jeff Hardy for the World Title, he's looked impressive in every match and surely deserves to be higher up the ranking than MVP, who's spent a lot of the past year on a losing streak!
RESPONSE FROM KE: Morrison has been great (in the ring) the past three months, but, as you said, he was in a tag team for most of the year. I was considering singles wrestlers only. That's why I didn't put Alex Shelley on the list, either. If I do another list of this type next year, Morrison (barring injury) will certainly be on it, However, as far as being an all-around performer, he still needs to improve on his promos. As for MVP, IT'S NOT ABOUT WINS AND LOSSES!

I don't have any complaints as Jericho is at no. 1 spot and deservingly so. And I don't care about the rest.

Isn't Shawn Michaels at 3 a little bit lofty for someone who was out of action for a few months (apparently flipping burgers) and who's big return was back as part of a stale stable? I mean surely he should be somewhere further down closer to The Undertaker?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Remember, this is based on Aug. 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009. That means some of the great Michaels-Jericho matches and promos fall under that grading period. After that, Michaels' outstanding performance made a flawed angle with JBL work way better than it should have. Then he went on to wrestle The Undertaker in perhaps the greatest WrestleMania match of all time. It also was one of the best matches that I have ever seen live (and I've seen a lot).
Yes, Michaels was out of action for the last three months of the period. But the guy right in front of him -- Orton -- did not wrestle for the first three months due to a broken collarbone, and the guy right behind him -- Edge -- also was off TV for a few months.
Posted by: Jef | September 3, 2009 10:34 AM
How come Jeff Hardy not in your top 5?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Considering he is an average promo at best, I think he's where he belongs.
Posted by: Adriam | September 3, 2009 11:29 AM
I would have ranked Jack Swagger higher than No.19. He and Christian (No.13) were intertwined for much of this time frame, having worked an awesome program with each other. Six spots of difference between them seems like too many.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Christian -- more charisma and better on the stick.
Posted by: Christopher | September 3, 2009 12:51 PM
kev, just a question what about cima, kenta, bryan danielson,b-boy and a few other above kofi and the undertake and jarrett who have hardly wrestled at all this year and shawn micheals or did you try to stick to mainstreames and not delve to deep into the indy scene
RESPONSE FROM KE: If it was strictly about ring work, sure, but charisma and star power were also factors. Bryan Danielson may be a better technical wrestler than a lot of guys on the list, but he falls way short (in my opinion) when it comes to those two attributes.
As far as putting mostly mainstream guys on the list, there is a reason they are mainstream and the other guys are working indys. BTW, as you may know, Danielson has been signed by WWE. It will be interesting to see if he gets over.

Kevin,
Three of the top five guys didn't even wrestle a full year due to injuries and time off. If anybody should be number two, it should be Jeff Hardy. He may not be the best on the mic, but he ranks high on all the other criteria and he stayed healthy throughout.
RESPONSE FROM KE: There's no way I could put Hardy that high, and you stated the reason why. As for Orton, Michaels and Edge, I felt that their all-around performances were strong enough that missing a few months did not take away from that. Had they missed half the year, I probably would hav penalized them.
Posted by: Cliff | September 3, 2009 2:03 PM
i know everyone is going to have a fave but you put hbk waaayyy to high! did you miss the jbl storyline? that went on for months? and was completely boring and unbelievable??? its all good though, i mark out for santino if i had made a list i would of put him pretty highly..
RESPONSE FROM KE: Sure, we all have our favorites as fans, but I can be objective -- or at least I make an honest effort to do so. Look at the other list. I had Michaels at No. 15. Triple H and John Cena were Nos. 1 and 2, and they are not my two favorite wrestlers. I've never been a huge fan of Samoa Joe either, and he was six spots ahead of Michaels. But that's OK. People will believe what they want to believe.

This list is alot better with only a few minor problems. over your amount of time Kofi held 3 belts over Swaggers 1 and why is A J rated so low?
1. Edge
2. Randy Orton
3. Jeff Hardy
4. Chis Jericho
5. Kurt Angle
6. C M Punk
7. HHH
8. Sting
9. Rey misterio Jr.
10. Kofi Kingston
11. A J Styles
12. Shawn Micheals
13. Undertaker
14 Samoa Joe
15. Nigel Mcginess
16. MVP
17. John Morrison
18. Mick Foley
19. Christian
20. Jack Swagger
I also didn't see how you can have anyone who took of a quarter of the year and still have them the Top 5.
Posted by: frank from dundalk | September 3, 2009 2:16 PM
No John Morrison? Sure he only really started getting his big push recently, but he has been a great worker, even spectacular, for a while now; he's been seen as a future great for a while now. Plus his promo skills have been good...Could say the same for Dolph Ziggler too...
Matt Hardy left out? Surely his feud with Jeff, and constant good work rate deserves him atleast a place?
I notice no Samoe Joe as well...but I agree with you there.
I think your list is great apart from the missing 3 mentioned before. I'm sure you will get a lot of heat for Shawn being so high...but his feuds with Jericho and Taker more thank make him deserving of his place.
Great list and Kev!
RESPONSE FROM KE: Matt's promos kept him out of the top 20.
Posted by: Stan | September 3, 2009 3:10 PM
I dont think Edge should be so high up, and Jeff Jerrett wouldnt be in the list whatsoever. Kofi should be higher up, as should Jeff Hardy. And Batista?
Cant argue with the Top 5, except get Edge out and move everybody up.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Batista is not a great worker by any stretch, but he isn't a bad one either, no matter what the smart marks may think. As a power wrestler, he's believable and he has had some very good matches on PPV. He has star power and charisma for sure, and he has gotten a lot better on the mic. Had he not missed so much time, he would have been higher.
Posted by: SteRDLK | September 3, 2009 3:21 PM
Based on you're new critera HHH should still be top five.
MVP should not be higher than anybody you have below him.
Other than that your list is pretty spot on. Good job as always!

Whew! Thank God. I hope everyone can sleep at night with v2.0. Not agreeing with a list based on someone else's opinion can be a real nightmare.
Posted by: MechanicalBull | September 3, 2009 4:42 PM
Yoe should make a top 20 based on fan bases. Or crowd reactions.
Posted by: wwefan1047 | September 3, 2009 5:01 PM
WHAT!? No Santino!
Posted by: Mike C | September 3, 2009 5:09 PM
Where is Vladimir Kozlov? I'm not joking, I actually mark out on this guy. We need an old fashioned russian brute and he's it.
Posted by: Dave | September 3, 2009 5:49 PM
I don't believe anyone can make a case for anyone other than Jericho for number 1. He is in a league of his own on the mic and is one of the top workers as well. Superstar of the year for 08 and he only has on real competitor for 09 (CM Punk) even though he has be working in the IC and tag team divisions and against 2 decrepit old men at `Mania. Hopefully, he will get one more legit single's feud before the year is out, perhaps against Morrison or Taker (although I would save that for WM because they have never faced each other on a televised match)
Posted by: Jon | September 3, 2009 6:19 PM
See, now that is how you do a ranking!
Can't complain at all about that top 10.
Posted by: Elevation | September 3, 2009 6:49 PM
Can't see anyone disagreeing with Jericho as #1
Posted by: James | September 3, 2009 7:11 PM
Glad that Jericho is #1 ahead of Orton. Orton has certainly evolved into a great performer, but his storyline is stale and he is not as good a worker as Jericho.
Also glad that Kofi made the list. Within 2 years, he should be on top of it. Even though I'm a die hard Shawn Micheals, Undertaker, Jericho fan, watching Kofi in the ring is the most exciting part of wrestling at the moment. WWE needs to give him a high profile story. I want him to win MITB at WM26.

If only A.J. was on Smackdown with Morrison, Punk, Hardy and so on...
Posted by: rob the barber | September 3, 2009 8:29 PM
Kevin, looks like a good list in general.
However, I do take issue with some of your top 20, especially Michaels and Undertaker. Taking activity into account these two performers were non-factors over almost the entire summer.
Posted by: Kevin | September 3, 2009 11:18 PM
16th???? Seriously???? Big Show drops off the original top 20 all together and AJ Styles doesn't get moved up even ONE spot????
Posted by: bryan | September 4, 2009 1:44 AM
When wrestling is treated as entertainment the list makes much more sense.
Posted by: Vishal Nayak | September 4, 2009 1:50 AM
Michaels at no3 is to high as he has wrestled very little in the past year and the same applies to the undertaker. Jeff hardy should be in the top 3 and btw who is nigel mcguinness. Jericho at no1 is spot on kev.
RESPONSE FROM KE: McGuiness was Ring of Honor champ for most of the grading period. I think you'll see him in WWE or TNA at some point, most likely TNA.
Posted by: Seamus | September 4, 2009 2:29 AM
The list is pretty accurate.
But here comes a lot of complaints from Sweden.. sorry for being negative, but i have to tell my thoughts...
Though I dont understand why Jeff Hardy is rated so high. Everytime he has the mic in his hands, i get embarrased, cause his micabilites are under the carpet. Yeah, he do have charisma and a good arsenal. But.. to geeky with voice!
Santino is missed on the list, he really makes me laugh!
Jack Swagger is GREAT. He is this fearful brute thats just fits perfect as a monster-heel. He could also be up higher..
Batista? He has ZERO acting talents and ZERO qualities in the ring.. he uses only like 2-3 things in the ring constantly (just like Cena)
Randy Orton, Edge, Chris Jericho, is a delight to watch, they all are extremely talent and "REAL". They are awesome.. MVP is great, CM Punks, stuff about Straight Edge is beautiful, he is so true! What a hero.. honestly.
The Miz... i love that guy! His micabilities and ringquality is SUPER! I could see him on nr 8 on the list infact.
Oh and by the way.. while i am typing here...
Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Christian, Rey Mysterio, John Cena... i am so sick and tired of them! GET IN WITH NEW Wrestlers....! Please!
Posted by: Stevo | September 4, 2009 3:30 AM
hey Kev
Instead of doing another version of your top 20, have your readers submit their top 20 and somehow tally all the votes to see who the Ring Post community think are the best in the business.
I'm sure people will still complain about the list but they won't complain about your list.
Posted by: Frank King | September 4, 2009 10:30 AM
How are people suggesting Santino should be on the list?
He only adds "comedy" to the show, and the angles he's been involved in haven't allowed him to show any in-ring ability.
All that matters is that Jericho is top, because he has had an outstanding year.
No qualms from me Kev, excellent as always

"RESPONSE FROM KE: McGuiness was Ring of Honor champ for most of the grading period. I think you'll see him in WWE or TNA at some point, most likely TNA."
You got that half right...
Posted by: Bri on LI | September 4, 2009 2:21 PM
WWE was watching and snapped up the only ROH guy on your list, lol.
Posted by: King Tony | September 4, 2009 3:24 PM
I like this list much better but i have one question. On your original list V.1 you didnt want to use any wrestlers from ROH. Why on this list? I just read that Nigel has also sign with WWE
RESPONSE FROM KE: On this list, ROH guys stood a better chance because it's based on performance. On the other list, if you regard wrestling as legitimate competition and consider quality of opponents, it's like comparing a Double-A baseball player to a major leaguer.
Posted by: jason | September 4, 2009 4:50 PM
Let me say this, I don't like DX,but like the persona of triple H solo. the wwe already has 2 goof acts....chavo-hornswaggle, and Santino. too corn-dog for me. cena seems to never win the big one anymore, but his drawing power is classic. As is Orton, Edge ( who left on a goof) and Undertaker. Jericho is the best with the mike ever. At raw in Vegas DX miked for almost 45 minutes. OK, you are actors, then do a movie or something, in the meantime, LETS WRESTLE!
