Looking at the low rating for TNA Impact

I can just imagine Vince Russo running into TNA president Dixie Carter’s office screaming, “I told you so!” when the ratings came in for last Thursday’s episode of TNA Impact.

Impact is often criticized for its lack of actual wrestling, an over-emphasis on comedy (lame comedy, at that) and pushing past-their-prime big-name stars instead of elevating younger talent.

This past Thursday’s episode of Impact, however, was universally praised by fans and pundits because it featured good wrestling and minimal skits and put the spotlight on guys such as Matt Morgan, Hernandez, A.J. Styles and even Doug Williams. In other words, it was not a Russo-esque show.

Unfortunately, it did a 1.0 rating (rounded up from 0.95). Impact’s ratings this year have consistently been in the 1.1 to 1.3 range except for three weeks when it did a 1.0 – New Year’s Day, Aug. 13 and Thursday.

When I interviewed Carter two weeks ago, she expressed her commitment to pushing younger talent. I just hope that she and others in TNA don’t take the ratings drop as an indictment of that philosophical shift. Patience and long-term thinking are what will help TNA grow. The worst thing would be to panic over a slight decrease in ratings and continue pushing guys in their late 40s and early 50s as the top stars.

Besides, there is a possibility that the below-average rating actually had more to do with technology than creative philosophy. According to pwinsider.com, a number of viewers reported a DVR glitch that resulted in Impact not being taped as scheduled.

Yep. DVR was set to record TNA Impact and the cable provider had it listed as TNA Wrestling last week so the DVR didn't recognize it as the right show to record. Check your listing and change settings as needed. Good thing it replay Sat morning here (Virginia). It was a good show

Another wrestling columnist regularly proposes a theory that each weeks rating are partially due to the feelings of the viewer based on the previous week... So, if I didn't like last week's show, I won't tune in this week. Hopefully TNA will not have an immediate reaction and let things go longer term and see what happens with the younger guys (or less known since some of them have been working for years).

An inuendo that Scott Steiner is past his prime ??? ....... must be referring to Nash :)

i adgree, i hope tna dosent panic at all, its more about last weeks show more than anything, and this weeks impact will be higer rated

I have to agree with CW (last week's bad,why watch this week) and yes even you Mr. Eck. I watched the show Saturday as well (it replays here in Good old SC, home of the best "political shoot territory show since World Class Texas Wrestling", Kev is Mark Stanford a heel or a face) but I digress, this is the EXACT kind of show TNA needs to be putting on. Good to Great wrestling, good emotional story telling, young exciting athletic characters (soon to be stars if TNA plays their cards right) drama and yes comedy that doesn't overwhelm one's taste or take away from the story telling. Daniels with probably (as you pointed out) his best mike time ever, Styles playing his "Babyface" roll to the hilt, the excellent old school Hernandez swerve, continuing to the heel alliances with their (hopefully soon to be) fragile pact , and constant back and forth. All the matches were excellent for TV, with several being better than most of the PPV crap that gets shoved down our wrestling junkie throats. If TNA is smart enough to continue on this line they can use the best of what all these guys have to offer OLD & NEW. The Dudley's,British Invasion, Eric Young, Sting, Steiner and Booker (almost) played their roles to a tee, up then down, new heel and old to me this show let us all see what kind of potential this roster has if used correctly to fill the void many of us yearn for. Williams looked great, Bashir is getting killed one minute and retribution the next, did I just see Tully, Junk Yard Dog, the Von Erich's and the Freebirds in different roles? Not when they were of the charts famous but at the start and buikd to their success. I don't agree with quite a bit of your criticisms Mr. Eck but if you could get and stay behind this kind of show, then maybe-just maybe we can get some wrestling territory variety back for awhile. If TNA is smart enough to grab the void they just hit on last week and not keep freaking out with short term drops in the fragile ratings of the current wrestling business I think they could honestly challenge VKM. There are many fans that have heard of some great show or event that TNA puts on only to end up disallusioned after they drop any coherent storyline or plot, chicken out with a few bad weeks and bring back the freak show, gimmick match BS that you have sometimes overcritisized in my opinion but largely have been accurate in your critique, though perhaps a bit harsh on a young company trying to slay the Giant. To me part of the absolute beauty if the territory days of cable was the hit or miss factor, one month the Superstaion owned the air, next month maybe the AWA or Memphis and then World Class, only for the cycle to repeat itself, it went on and on. Sure there was plenty of crap but when they hit even if for a short while they really hit. I only hope that this is the start of a "hit" even if for a short while, it damn well better than the same old Triple H, Orton, Cena, fighting the same matches of Triple H, Stone Cold Foley et al. One can dream.

I had the same thing happen with my TIVO about 6 months ago. It switched from TNA Impact to TNA wrestling. Luckly I caught the mistake before I missed the show.

I know the DVR problem would be an issue for viewers trying to get their TNA fix. But, if I'm not mistaken, ratings are based on actual viewers at time of broadcast, mostly due to what the ratings are then used for (ad viewership) which goes away completely with DVR viewers fast forwarding past them.

They (Comcast/Spike?) also replay TNA on Saturday mornings - EXTREMELY happy about that too because once the new seasons of the network shows that I watch start up next week, there are occasions when 2-3 shows I like are on at the same time and the DVR can only record 2 at a time. Can't miss my wrestling fix!!!

This is the absolute truth. There was in fact a DVR glitch last week Thur., I honestlky thought it was just me. This explains everything. Thanks Eck

The one thing that most people are forgetting is that it was also the first night of college football, with a South Carolina/NC State and Oregon/Boise State doubleheader. The main demo that was down from all of the reports that I have seen is the 18-34 male demo...Living in the south where college football is like religion, I can tell you that in the NC/SC region which is also a hotbed for wrestling, a large amount of males in that age range were watching that football game...Perhaps some of this was done by design for certain folks to justify their existence and sell the fact that the show cannot go on without their creative wisdom. That is if everyone over there is indeed really in fear of losing their jobs...

Who cares what their ratings are?

Their house show and PPV numbers are going to continue to be non-existent regardless if they do a 0.9 or a 1.1
