Looking at Linda McMahon's Senate run
WWE put the word out last month that Linda McMahon was considering a run for the U.S. Senate representing her home state of Connecticut, and today she made it official that she is a candidate. In doing so, she has resigned as WWE CEO, turning the job over to WWE chairman Vince McMahon.
While Linda McMahon, a Republican, comes off as refined and intelligent and is nowhere near as overbearing as her husband, she may very well have an uphill battle in overcoming the stigma of owning a pro wrestling company. It stands to reason that the recent changes in WWE programming to a more family friendly product are due in part to her decision to run for political office. Still, it’s a virtual certainty that every scandal that WWE has been involved in over the years and the racy content from the Attitude Era will become fodder for her opponents.
Ric Flair, an active member of the Republican party who has campaigned for George H.W. Bush, Mike Huckabee and the late Sen. Jesse Helms, once said that he had been approached several times about running for office in his home state of North Carolina, but he couldn’t do so because he had too many skeletons in his closet from all his years in the wrestling business.
But who knows, maybe Linda McMahon can win. If Jesse “The Body” Ventura can be elected as governor of Minnesota, anything is possible.

State Senate or U.S. Senate?
RESPONSE FROM KE: U.S. Senate

Yeah!
This is great.
Hell in the Cell with Barbara Mikulski, anyone?
Or Nancy Pelosi.
Linda could kick both their candy a------ together in handicap match I bet!!
And Vince's in ring transgressions with the Divas? Look what Monica Lewinski did for Hillary!
Harry Reid gets out of line and there's a tombstone or chokeslam heading his way!
How about Bill O'Reilly guest hosting Raw?
Or the WWE superstars "invade" the US senate and HHH pedigrees Joe Biden and Shawn Michaels delivers "sweet CHin music" to Barack rather than calling him a liar?

I'm really stuck in the middle on this one. On one hand, I'm going to have to defend pro wrestling from the easy jokes that my fellow liberals will certainly make at the GOP's expense.
On the other hand, a billionaire who's business is presenting fiction as reality to a stereotypically dumb, southern demographic? Yep, sounds like a Republican Senator to me!

Jesse had the best slogan for a political candidate...
"Vote for Me or I'll bodyslam your grandmother"

Geez , next thing you'll tell us is that Gopher has a seat in congress .
I'm probably the only reader old enough to know who that is .

I think this is a big mistake. While Linda might make a capable senator all the old dirty laundry of drug scandals, deaths and sexual misconduct in the wwe is going to come up and I did'nt even mention the benoit murder suicide.

Also, it won't help that she was an on-screen character during that time.

It helps her that the current Conn Senator (Chris Dodd) is involved in a lucrative money scandel involving all the bank bailout stuff.
Posted by: eee | September 17, 2009 12:07 AM
To answer andrewdavis' question, it's for U.S. Senate because Chris Dodd is a United States Senator.
I doubt she will win. She has very little political experience, and Simmons looks to be the favorite anyway.

SHe's got... get ready for it...
NO CHANCE, NO CHANCE IN HELL!!!

Jack, I know who Gopher is and I also know Fred Grandy served in Congress and didn't fare too poorly in a gubernatorial race.
Imagine Linda McMahon in the Senate and Jerry Lawlor as mayor or Memphis.

If Linda can present herself as a successful business owner of an entertainment company, she may have a good shot of freeing herself from stigma of pro wrestling. She was CEO of a very succesful entertainment company, which happens to be geared toward a male demographic. Would there be the same issues for Roger Goodell (NFL) if he ran for office?

Nope, TAFKAJIH. I know exactly who that is. Gopher and Cooter both have had seats in Congress since riding off into that Boob Tube sunset.

Kevin, I hope you are prepared to have a Poflawar (political flame war) take place on your page. I see WHOLETRUTHY already fired off the first salvo....

TAFKAJIH:
I remember that, and also Cooter was a U.S. representative at that same time.

Just like to point out that Barack Obama is not a communist. And arent we all liars?
Mcmahon has no chance, way too much controversy, how would she even win a primary for the GOP?
Posted by: theorangechimp | September 17, 2009 3:22 PM
Hopefully when she loses, the WWE will stop pursuing such a heavily pg-rated show
Posted by: James | September 17, 2009 4:33 PM
Bob Buscaglia - I figured from your past posts , that you and a small handful of others would get the reference . And no I can't imagine either of your scenerios .
Props also to ZT in NC , and etucker !

Some might draw the comparison to Jesse Ventura. However, Ventura served for four years as a mayor prior to aspiring to a senior elected position at the state level.
She's aiming a bit too high at this point. She should work in a "developmental territory" first before trying for a main event position like this one.

Maybe she should spend some more time on improving her wrestling company and stop campaigning for lower taxes, which sounds like she's doing by scanning her web site.
