Defending Ben Roethlisberger's decision to host Raw
As a die-hard Ravens fan and someone who hates the Pittsburgh Steelers with a passion, I can’t believe I’m actually going to say this:
Big Ben, I got your back.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is getting criticized by Pittsburgh sports talk show hosts and Steelers fans for agreeing to host Raw this coming Monday, but I just don’t see what they are so upset about.
Their contention is that Roethlisberger should be concentrating solely on football. There also is the usual wrestling-bashing going on that seems to happen whenever an athlete or celebrity “lowers himself” to appear on a wrestling program.
Apparently, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin isn’t too thrilled about Roethlisberger hosting Raw, either. When asked about it by reporters Wednesday, Tomlin said, “No comment.”
I think they all need to lighten up and stuff a sock in it. Better yet, stuff a silly yellow towel in it.
I’m certainly no Roethlisberger fan, but I do respect him as a competitor, and I don’t believe for one second that he’d do anything that would negatively affect his play. It’s not like he’s missing practice because of it, as the Steelers just have a team meeting on Monday and they are off on Tuesday, according to an Associated Press story.
Roethlisberger is a wrestling fan and has attended WWE events in the past, so he may have gone to the show anyway. Is there really that big a difference between sitting in the front row – as we often see NFL players doing at Raw and Smackdown – and cutting a promo and appearing in a few skits? Now if he gets in the ring and takes a bump, I think there would be cause for criticism, but I seriously doubt the Steelers would allow him to do anything physical on the show.
I have a feeling that if the Steelers were 3-0 instead of 1-2, all of Pittsburgh wouldn’t be so outraged over Roethlisberger hosting Raw. Speaking as a fan of a team that actually is 3-0, I can say unequivocally that I would have no problem with Ray Lewis doing the show when Raw is in Baltimore on Nov. 30.
A big victory over the Steelers on Sunday night, and Lewis hosting Raw the following night. Sounds perfect to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if Big Ben does get involved actually. He would have a lot of power behind a "knockout punch" with those super bowl rings.
Is it at all obvious I'm a Steelers fan.
p.s. Don't knock the "Silly yellow towel", it's used to polish all of our championships.

@ Jay - I can think of one or two more uses of that yellow towel :)

This goes out to Jay. Unless you play for the Steelers they are not "your" championships. Go polish your dining room table.

It seems most people who are hosting RAW have a charity to promote; most NFL players do, so everyone in Pittsburgh needs to calm down. Plus, do any of the newspapers and media outlets realize how many football, baseball, and basketball players are actually wrestling fans?? Plus, they all say that wrestlers are some of the best atheletes in the world, so Pittsburgh we only got two words for ya.........

@ Ed from Perry Hall - LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's cool that he'll be hosting--but I won't be watching. My Packers are playing on Monday night, so I'll catch the replay on Tuesday. A girl's got to have priorities.

speaking as a fan of a team that is 0-3 (The Browns) I am hoping to see Big Ben take a chairshot. Just keep Ben away from the divas, if you know what I mean, he might mistake them for house keeping. I would agree that he should not be appearing on a show during the season as he should be focused on the sport. I understand what you are saying about how it is no different than watching the show, but if I was a Pittsburgh fan (thank god I am not) I would not be thrilled. I was nervous with Shaq on raw even though it is not the Basektball season, but this year looks like Cleveland's only chance for a championship and I want everyone involved to be 100% focused on the season. So you fans in Baltimore can enjoy the riches that have come off a foundation built by Cleveland before the team was taken from us. In the offseason I do not think it would be a big deal, but during the season you should be focused. They pay you millions of dollars and this is not the way the quarterback should be behaving. Hopefully big Ben doesn't drive a motorcycle to the show.

Keep it classy Hotel Ben.
What a cad.

The people that are slamming Roethlisberger's hosting of RAW...can we find them also slamming Brett Farve for showing up on the Tonight Show, or Tom Brady for maybe doing a one shot on SNL, if that ever happened?
Focus solely on football? Screw you - playing championship-grade football is incredibly stressful, even if he plays for Pittsburgh. Just kidding.
I want to shake these idiots. Chris makes some good points - these guys may just be fans and want to have a good time. It's obvious that WWE is a viable marketing tool (though one may argue that McMahon is a tool, but I digress) so it's worth having these hosts on.

That is interesting I regularly listen to ESPN 1250 Pittsburgh on the web and I didn't hear any kind of flack about him hosting...they mentioned it, but nothing negative. Where did you hear it? I think once the Steelers get the flying Hawaiian back in the backfield he'll be running pick 6's back on the Ravens and the rest of the league on our way back to the playoffs....
RESPONSE FROM KE: I didn't hear it myself. I read it and a friend of mine from Pitt. told me about it. I don;t know the station (s) but I can try and find out.

QUOTE "I’m certainly no Roethlisberger fan, but I do respect him as a competitor, and I don’t believe for one second that he’d do anything that would negatively affect his play."
WHAT ARE YOU SAYING????Remember, this is the smae idiot that drove a motorcycle without a helmet and had an accident. What a moron!!!!
*****GO RAVENS*****
PLAY LIKE A RAVEN

I agree with the last sentence as well, kevin. Ray would be the perfect host for RAW at the Arena the day after the ravens beat the steelers on NBC

I for one am disappointed. Hailing from the UK I have absolutely no clue who Ben Roethlisberger is but then again Bob Barker isn't exactly a household name on these shores, yet he was a great guest GM. I'll give Roethlisberger a chance but here's to hoping Raw concentrates fully on the aftermath from Hell in a Cell.

I wish it was Sidney Crosby who was hosting RAW. Nothing I'd like to see more than one of the Divas rip off his lips during a Divas Tag match...then he can go cry to Vince about how Mickie James hurt him 'for real'.
Posted by: B | October 1, 2009 9:23 AM
let's hope he doesn't ride his motorcycle to the event.

"Our championships"? I didn't see any one on any of the Steelers championship teams named "Jay".
Posted by: Anonymous | October 1, 2009 10:02 AM
Players shouldn't be doing this during football season at all. They go to work for four months out of the year, and they should be focused on football soley during that time. They are getting paid millions to play football. They can wait till the season's over.
I disagree Kev. I never want to see a Raven on Raw during football season.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I respect your opinion, but again, I see no harm. These guys are entitled to have some fun on their days off. A lot of guys host radio shows at restaurants. I don't see a big difference between that and appearing in a few segments on a wrestling show.
Posted by: Ballz Mahoney | October 1, 2009 12:05 PM
You're right Kev. I never get this, "concentrate on football," or any sport that the media spews. These same reporters have probably never picked up a ball in their lives. What's he supposed to do? Go home after practice, sit in a dark room, and think about the next game until it's time to go to bed? Athletes are allowed to have lives.
BTW, I'm also from Maryland, Frederick County. There are prob. just as many Steeler fans here in Western MD. I don't like Pittsburgh or Ben but this crap from the media is ridiculous.

Also the Ravens are going to destroy those rooty-poo candy ass Pats this weekend. Whatcha gonna do when McGahee and Rice run wild on you?
Posted by: Bad News | October 1, 2009 12:18 PM
Ed from Perry Hall: If fans didn't show up to support the teams there would be no championships to play for. So if fans want to claim their team's championships as 'ours' they can. Quit being a cynical idiot.
As for Big Ben, he should be able to do whatever he wants in his free time.

Good thing is the most recent Steelers' Super Bowl champ and not the previous ones... those guys would get a wellness policy violation the instant they stepped into Vince's rings. And yes, after Rivers talks a massive amount of trash and pull out another big game with a win, the Steelers' fans will go complain about something, it just happens to be Raw.
Posted by: Jon | October 1, 2009 2:24 PM
Maybe if Ray Lewis hosts RAW they can bring back Sid for one night and both of them can stab Arn Anderson.
Posted by: AP | October 1, 2009 3:33 PM
Completely agree with mrejr8243 ( why didn't u pick a simple name?) that goes for Ed and Anon. Like y'all didn't go crazy and say stuff like "we are the champs" when the Ravens won the Super Bowl back in 2000.
Posted by: james madison | October 1, 2009 4:18 PM
They should have a REAL quarterback like Joe Flacco host Raw. . .
But since it's Big Ben hosting, everyone on Raw will have to watch their backs, because Heinz Ward may show up with him. And we all know how much Ward loves to take cheap shots!

Kevin, I appreciate everyone's opinions, except for the ignorant fools who forget that a person is innocent until proven guilty. If or when Roethlisberger is convicted, comment all you want then. Until then, your readers who make snide remarks about a possibly innocent man just because his team beats theirs regularly should keep their traps shut or try to mature. I'm sick of that attitude in the US these days. Sheesh! Go, Pack, go!

Don't blame him, blame his parents. If my last name was 8243, I would never have called my child mrejr. 9152, for instance, would sound a lot better.

"Bad News" - I'm originally from Frederick , and my feelings are if you live in Md . , you're a Ravens fan .
If not , get out ........... :)
