A little bit of everything on Smackdown
Friday night’s Smackdown did not have a pay-per-view-quality match like other episodes have had recently, but it was a solid, well-rounded show.
It included two good wrestling matches (CM Punk vs. Matt Hardy, Chris Jericho and The Big Show vs. Cryme Tyme), an entertaining brawl (Finlay vs. Mike Knox), a strong promo (Punk), an effective beat-down (Drew McIntyre on R-Truth) and some funny comic relief (Vince McMahon intimidating Theodore Long).
The show illustrated the fact that the Smackdown roster has a nice mix of guys at various stages of their careers. In addition to the big-name veterans (The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, The Big Show, Kane), you have a guy just coming into his own as a headliner (Punk), two guys on the verge of becoming money players (John Morrison, Dolph Ziggler), promising newcomers (The Hart Dynasty, Drew McIntyre) and mid-card acts that are over (Matt Hardy, R-Truth, Mike Knox, Cryme Tyme and Finlay).
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
The opening verbal confrontation between Punk and Undertaker was good. Punk was awesome as usual, and The Undertaker cut a nice promo that fit his character. I liked that Punk was cocky and not at all phased by The Undertaker’s “smoke and mirrors” act. It made the final segment more meaningful. Punk was holding the world heavyweight title belt in the ring, and then the lights went out. When they came back on, the belt mysteriously was in the hands of The Undertaker, who was standing on the stage. Punk sold the fact that The Undertaker’s little parlor trick had gotten to him. ...
This week’s Punk-Matt Hardy match was better than last week’s. Hardy looks as if he still is not 100 percent. ...
Morrison was doing a serviceable job on the mic, but he lost me at “Mr. Ziggles.” What is this, third grade? Or is that some hip pop culture reference that I’m not hip enough to get? ...
Ziggler being set up by Michelle McCool and Layla backstage almost makes him come off as a babyface. ...
I really liked the Belfast Brawl between Knox and Finlay, but I think the wrong guy (Finlay) won. I’d really like to see WWE get behind the Knox character, which I am liking more and more. The finish to the match looked great, as Finlay blasted Knox with the shillelagh just as Knox hit a cross-body. ...
I don’t know where the McMahon-Long deal is going, but I enjoy their segments. I wonder if the major surprise that Long promised for next week’s show is that Batista is leaving Raw for Smackdown? Remember, Batista is supposed to make a big announcement on Raw Monday night. ...
That was a nice spot in the Jericho/Big Show-Cryme Tyme match when Jericho appeared to be going for a bulldog and Shad Gaspard turned into a power slam in one fluid motion. I think I have written this before, but it’s worth saying again: I would much rather watch Cryme Tyme wrestle than see them doing their Word Up segments. ...
The Big Show’s knockout punch on JTG was well-timed, as it seemingly came out of nowhere. Big Show’s punchout finisher makes former NWA world champion “Hands of Stone” Ronnie Garvin’s look like a love tap. ...
I didn’t see McIntyre’s sneak attack on R-Truth coming this week. I’m looking forward to seeing these two wrestle each other. By the way, I wonder if McIntyre is any relation to former women’s wrestler Velvet McIntyre. I think I developed my affinity for redheads the first time I saw her, which was when I was about 15. I don't know if she was really that attractive or if she just looked good because she was in the ring with The Fabulous Moolah...
A Ronnie Garvin reference and a Velvet McIntyre reference in the same post. I think I'm showing my age.

I still say that SD is the best show on WWE, they have great wrestling and great mic skills by all the wrestlers, I think the right person won the belfast brawl, because it showed again y finlay is the best trainer for younger wrestlers and mike knoxx losing makes his character more believable, the rest of the card was just as exciting, no wonder vince is on SD so much he wants to see how a real wrestling show is written......everyon on sd seem to enjoy there character and the way they are written into character. Vince needs to putg SD on primetime station like RAW,

That's what I thought. Some us have been assuming (perhaps wrongly) that Ziggler has been cheating on Maria, but he will be a sympathetic character if she falsely accuses him.

"Ziggler being set up by Michelle McCool and Layla backstage almost makes him come off as a babyface."
On the subject of this segment, McCool and Layla's plan only works if we assume Maria doesn't ever watch Smackdown, live at the arena or on TV, and neither do her friends, family, and fans.
Maybe McCool and Layla's next plan will be to rob a bank, complete with them discussing their strategy on Smackdown.

I personally am a big fan of Drew McIntyre, as a fellow Scot. His real name is Drew Galloway (I have no idea why WWE never used it) so I doubt he has any relation to Velvet McIntyre.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, I know McIntyre is not his real name. I just wanted to get in a Velvet Mcintyre reference.

Did you see Josh Matthews get knocked down during R-Truth & McIntyre promo? I guess Josh wasn't "Tough Enough"....man that joke was lame.

Drew McIntyre is my new favorite wrestler on SmackDown....I liked him when he was around a while back and became a bigger fan from seeing him on Florida Championship Wrestling. I hope they push him well, because he's an old school heel that's needed.

Morrison might not have had the best material on the mic, but he did manage to get the crowd pretty solidly behind him, so hopefully when he gets some better lines the crowd will respond even more.

I didnt enjoy Smackdown as much as in recent weeks, but it was still a great show.
Punk is really becoming a legit main event talent, and its brilliant. Undertaker and him seem to have decent interaction, I hope this feud continues.
If Batista does join Smackdown, I hope it is with the sole intention of letting Punk go over him clean, as it would really be a boost to his career, especially if he beats Undertaker as well.
Im not sure if they are making Dolph a face, it wouldnt make too much sense, but Im intrigued by this storyline, even though I generally dont like these love stories.
Drew Mcintyre has already made a big impact, and by doing it against both a solid wrestler and a fan favourite will really help.
Im glad Morrison got mic time, and despite the cheesiness of Mr Ziggles, it got the fans to make some noise, which can only be a positive, and helps establish Morrison as a face even more.
The matches this week were pretty good, I particularly enjoyed the main event.
Im not enjoying this Kane/Khali feud. Kane as a heel doesnt work for me, and Khali is just appalling. Shame the Hart Dynasty werent allowed to compete, they are always entertaining.

BReaking Point is getting ready to come on as I write this but I have to quick give my thoughts on SD so excuse me if any of the following is sloppy or grammatically incorrect:
I am soooooo excited Taker is facing Punk tonight. However, I just saw a internet site that reported Taker is NOT at 100% and was moving slow in the ring at a house show. Gah! That's definitely not good. I'm thinking my favorite wrestler since 1996 better start considering retirement sadly if this keeps up. I wasn't to thrilled with the constant notices of Taker's coming last week before seeing him for the split second, but I was much more thrilled that we saw him longer this week.
Taker's promo wasn't anything special for me because the lights weren't dimmed and there wasn't funeral reefs and caskets out there. A big part of his promos is messing with his opponents head. Perhaps even if he did the promo while lying in the coffin. He needs to add more mind games to his promos. He did the promo while standing in the ring in broad daylight.
CM Punk did a good job when he came out there. Seems CM Punk is going to go with applying his Straight Edge gimmick to all the fans as a way of keeping it going since he can't always apply it to wrestlers. CM Punk did well.
Taker did poorly interacting with CM Punk though? He didn't respond enough and didn't explain what he meant by Symphony of lies. Again, that's where mind games come into play. Taker needs to use his "supernatural powers" to turn off CM Punk's mic and then respond.
All in all, Taker was only all right in this promo. He needed to be doing more mind games. CM Punk was great.
It should be noted that Taker slightly resembled his Deadman persona of 97 / 98 when he came out in that sleeveless gothic coat or whatever.
OTHER THOUGHTS
Shad Gaspaard absolutely ruled that tag team match.
Tired of Big Show always having to look the strongest as opposed to Jericho. What favors is that tag team doing for Jericho. It's alllll about Big Show.
Drew Mcyintyre or howevever you spell it looks great. He and R Truth should have a nice feud.
EXCELLENT match between Knox and Finlay. Wrong person one as was stated.
I was wrong last week. Michelle McCool cannot act. LMFAO @ the guy who made the robbery joke!
Hardy losing by submission was a nice correction from last week. Some people disagree with me on Hardy needing to hit the gym and not to go with this whole image McMahon puts in our heads. I understand that point of view but the thing about it is not everyone looks bad when they're not in shape. Hardy looks bad when he's not in shape.

Dont let's forget Ronnie Garvin's other major offensive maneuver:the awesome Garvin Stomp.
I still cant believe they let that guy beat Flair for the NWA strap.

lasst weeks smackdown was better then it was on tv. i was at the matches after cm punk beat hardy the undertaker had a 1 fall match against cm punk it was a title match, the match ended when cm punk hit the undertaker with a chair and was disqualfied and as cm punk was taunting the undertaker he arose again to beat cm punk to a pulp ending with the toumbstone-now thats entertainment.
