Was Kurt Angle winning at Hard Justice the right decision?
Given the nature of Kurt Angle’s arrest on Saturday, the fact that he retained the TNA world title in the main event at Sunday night’s Hard Justice pay-per-view has to be regarded as a controversial booking decision.
Before Saturday, I fully expected Angle to win the three-way match against Sting and Matt Morgan. It made the most sense from a story line standpoint, especially since it seems as if TNA is building to an Angle-Bobby Lashley match at Bound for Glory in October.
But after the arrest, I thought for sure that Angle was going to drop the title and be sent home for a while. I believe in due process and innocent until proven guilty, but TNA has to look at the situation from a public relations standpoint. It doesn’t reflect well on the company (or its sponsors) that its top star has been arrested on charges of violating a protection from abuse order, possessing a human growth hormone and driving on a suspended license.
If I was in charge of TNA, I would have scrapped the original plan and taken the belt off Angle. Not only would it have sent the right message, but a title change, if done the right way, might have been able to turn a negative into a positive and divert attention from Angle’s legal issues.
I came up with three scenarios for Angle losing the title at Hard Justice that I think would have popped the crowd and created a buzz among TNA fans:
Matt Morgan wins the three-way: At this point, 50-year-old Sting winning the title would literally be the same old, same old. Morgan, however, is 32, and is a fresh face on the main-event scene. Is he over enough right now to be the world champion? Probably not, but Morgan turning babyface in the match and pinning Angle to win the title would go a long way in getting him there. Then again, Morgan winning the title as a heel also could be interesting. It could have gone down like this: Angle suffers an “injury” in the match, which incapacitates him and clears the way for Morgan to beat Sting. It also provides a story line reason for Angle’s absence from TV. Morgan then becomes the new leader of The Main Event Mafia and has ready-made challengers in Sting, A.J. Styles and Abyss. When Angle returns (assuming he does), the MEM turns on Morgan, who goes babyface and does a title program with Angle, who once again becomes leader of the MEM.
A.J. Styles wins the three-way: Styles is perhaps the most popular wrestler in TNA, and while he has won the NWA title three times when that championship was under the TNA banner, he has never held the NWA/TNA world title since Impact began airing on Spike nearly four years ago. The fans are ready for another Styles reign. In this scenario, the MEM attack Sting backstage before the match and he is unable to compete. Sting, who has just taken Styles under his wing, asks Styles to take his place (Styles, conveniently, does not have a match on the show). Styles has been having self-doubts as of late, but Sting gives him an inspiring pep talk, and Styles goes on to pin Angle and win the title. He obviously would have a ready-made challenger in Morgan, who just defeated Styles in a best-of-three series to earn a spot in the three-way match.
Hernandez cashes in: Angle retains the title in the three-way, but after the match, Hernandez – riding a wave of momentum after his recent win over Samoa Joe and squashing of The British Invasion’s Rob Terry earlier at Hard Justice – comes out, cashes in his Feast or Fired briefcase and beats Angle to win the championship.

Comments
The third option is too similar to the CM Punk situation.
Angle still holding the belt is disastrous for TNA and the pro wrestling industry as such. Now the baiters have been given an easy topic to take TNA and wrestling to the cleaners. Wtf is TNA thinking?
RESPONSE FROM KE: The Feast of Fired gimmick is a copy of Money In the Bank, so why worry about it being soo similar?

...... I don't know Kevin , haven't we all violated a protection order , possessed HGH , and driven around on a suspended license at one time or another ????
What a mess .

From a Vince Russo/TNA POV, AJ winning the title makes the most sense as it would make the prior Matt Morgan 2 out of 3 series completely meaningless. The 'injured' Sting pep talk would be frosting.
I like the Hernandez scenario: What is the point of the Feast or Fired gimmick anyhow, other than to electrify the crowd when they least expect it? An interesting twist would be to have Morgan win, then lose to Hernandez, setting up a monster feud.

Can TNA really lose Kurt and Jeff with in a span of a month and stay a float? Kurt must be in control more then we all know backstage. They must be planning LONG term with this and will probably keep the belt on Angle until Bound for Glory.

At least he should have been suspended,. I think this was the wrong call on TNA's part. I would have put the strap on Morgan and let him walk around with the MEM until they got tired of him and they punked him out and turned him face.
Or hold it up for a big tournament concluding in the PPV from LA in October.

I really want to see Hernandez vs Angle as the Main-Event for Bound for Glory. Much your ideas all sound pretty solid. But TNA is the same company that had a perfectly solid method of removing Lo-Ki from TV (He had the Fired case) but then went on to give it to Daniels?! With your ideas you could have Angle come back from some time, angry that he wasn't 'beaten' to lose his belt.

Just as I said the other day, TNA= joke. Not only did they not suspend or at least remove him from the PPV, they let him win and keep the title. Vinnie Mac suspended Jeff Hardy right before he was due for a big push just before last years Wrestlemania. He suspended Ken Kennedy right before his big angle with him being Vince's son began. He suspended RVD and Sabu after being pulled over in Ohio and found with drugs on them. But TNA who has a drug program has, as far as I know, never suspended, fined or fired anyone. You would have to be really gullible to believe that no one in TNA has taken drugs in one form or another. According to sources TNA is lining up to sign Kennedy, Umanga and Brian Kendrick. All of these guy have been suspended or release because of violating the WWE's wellness program. A guy like Angle who's using HGH, stalking and has had other problems with anger in the past is just waiting to be another one of those tragic stories that has come to be associated with pro wrestling.

Can you call TNA and ask tell them to make you head of creative. Just these three points alone makes a lot more sense than what TNA has been putting out the past year.

All three of your scenarios are great. In fact, with Hernandez winning his match in less than a minute, it all but told the fans he would be cashing in his briefcase at night's end. Sting, later on, eluded to bringing back honor, dignity and respect "in Style, and I do mean Styles". During the main event, we saw Angle get "injured", so we knew something big was about to happen...Styles coming out? Hernandez coming out? Lashley, even? Nope, we saw Sting saunter off while Angle pinned Morgan, end of show. EPIC FAIL, and btw, no one wants to see or care about Lashley vs Angle.

The Kurt Angle situation is a mess. I like each of the scenarios you presented. Any of those may be what is necessary to save that promotion.....I have just about stopped watching it....

AJ winning as you describe would be the best scenario IMHO.
Posted by: AMC | August 17, 2009 12:27 PM
I can't believe they kept the title on Angle either. Any of those three scenarios you listed would've been better than what TNA did last night. They should've written Angle out for a bit until this deal is figured out first. It would be a breath of fresh air to see Morgan or Styles as champion.

More than likely the TNA creative cant think as fast on their feet as WWE to change storylines. I personally like option #2 b/c its been too long since AJ, imo their franchise star, has been the champ.

I'm sure Kurt will have the title stripped on IMPACT and this will all be explained with TNA's standard "This was our plan all along and if you don't believe it you're an idiot" spiel.
As well, is it just me or is MEM the least compelling/interesting stable (let alone MAIN EVENT stable) since they became fashionable? I think I was more captivated by the LWO & Misfits In Action.

Kevin,
Do you think TNA is just biding their time to see what the legal ramifications are from all of this? Squeeze a few extra months out of his title reign? Hopefully they have thought this through, and they don't end up having to have him drop the belt on Impact or at a house show or something like that.
Your "Angle is injured" storyline could work, but everyone would know why he was really gone. What are the chances they just have him drop the title and pull him from tv with no explanation or mention, a la Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett basically owns the company and they haven't even mentioned his name in weeks.

it doesnt seem that these charges are enough to cause great concern,IF angle has a legit pres. from a DR for hgh..maybe TNA knows more about this and deemed it not big enough to throw their plans in dissarray...ok well more dissarray

For all the flack we give WWE for the continuing saga that is HHH vs RKO vs Cena vs Batista on RAW, we don't give nearly enough to TNA with the MEM fued. The originals have been outshone at every turning point and made to look like fools repeatedly. For some reason, wrestling programs have come to the conclusion that small doesn't sell. This fact baffles me as some of the fan favorites in MMA are smaller guys: BJ Penn(155lbs), GSP(170lbs), Miguel Torres(135lbs), Urijah Faber(145lbs), and Mike Brown(145 lbs)

The Angle incident doesn't look good but I say it's too early to strip him of the belt. Maybe he does have a prescription, or maybe Kahn lied to the police. No one really knows except for the two of them. The guy has busted his ass for TNA and he should be given the benefit of doubt until the facts come out. No matter what, out of all the wrestling shows I DVR, I find TNA the most entertaining, with or without Kurt Angle.

The only problem with your statement is that this TNA. Any normal compny would do just as you said. But, does anybody really care about TNA? No! It's obvious that Dixie is an absolute mark and that she'll take whatever publicity she can get. I'm done with TNA!
Posted by: @wrestlingTtweets | August 17, 2009 5:49 PM
If I'm Dixie Carter, I get some new advisors. Lawyers, PR members, anyone should have kept Angle from retaining the title last night. I mean, pull the plug on the feed or something. It really has the potential to ruin them. I hope their drug testing records are ready to hold up when Congress comes calling.
My real question is about Sting just taking a walk after the match. Was that the move of a man sick with what he just had to be a part of?

To be honest, I think for TNA, any press is good press. Even if it is potential trouble for Kurt Angle (and I truly hope for his sake, it's just noise), this gets TNA's name in the major media markets (ESPN, etc.). Better than nothing!

As logical as it would have been to have AJ winning the title to put a positive spin on the Angle situation, it also would have been creatively bankrupt. After all, AJ lost his opportunity to participate in a title match fairy and squarely - no run-ins during his matches w/Morgan. And not to defend Angle if he did do bad things, but Angle losing the title would have been an ADMISSION OF GUILT.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Styles losing his title opportunity fairly to Morgan is exactly why I like him getting into the three-way and winning it. It gives Morgan a legit reason (especially if Angle was the one who got pinned) to feel as if he was screwed and sets up a title program with Styles.
I also disagree that Angle losing the title is an admission of guilt. He's been in the wrong place at the wrong time several times now. When someone gets arrested multiple times and has a history of drug problems, sending him home is not unfair. I wouldn't suspend him; just give him some paid time off.
Posted by: Ultimate Toronto | August 17, 2009 9:54 PM
I think Jim Ross said it best in a recent blog posting, Kurt would be well served by taking an extended break from the business. It's not even an issue of accusations, it's a pattern of behavior. I'm a big believer of where there's smoke, there's fire. For his own well being and for the well being of TNA as a company, Kurt really needs to be sent away to get himself in order. Considering that Jeff Jarrett has been on quasi-suspension for weeks without even being suspected of a crime, it's inexplicable that Kurt Angle is still the TNA champion, let alone still on the active roster. It's not about innocence or guilt or even an admission of guilt, it's about protecting the brand, and TNA already has credibility issues.

I can understand asking Angle to take time off because of the incident. However, I don't condone suspending him for what happened.
Doing that means makes it seem like the company has already passed judgment on him.
Let the public know that you believe in the justice system and that people are innocent until proven guilty.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I totally agree that he shouldn't be suspended.

Hey Kev, I like the Styles idea, but isn't he on the injured list? Seems like I read a report that he was out, but I do not remember the reason, but that was why he had no match scheduled.
RESPONSE FROM KE: He had a staph infection last month but he has continued working and I have not heard that he needed time off.
