TNA Impact: Hernandez’s statement trumps Bobby Lashley’s
Bobby Lashley was established as the top threat to the Main Event Mafia Thursday night on TNA Impact, but that wasn’t the biggest development on the show in my opinion.
That honor goes to Hernandez taking a major step forward in becoming a singles star by scoring a clean victory over Samoa Joe. The key will be how this is followed up, but TNA should have a fresh babyface main-eventer on its hands if done correctly.
A singles push for Hernandez has been talked about for a while. He already is over with the fans due to his years as a member of LAX, and having a Latino wrestler in the top tier could help TNA broaden its audience.
As for Lashley, the biggest knock on him in WWE was that he couldn’t cut a decent promo. During his verbal confrontation with Kurt Angle at the top of Thursday’s show, I thought he handled himself well at first, but the longer Lashley talked, the less I liked his promo.
He did come off like a star at the end of the program, however, when he made a dramatic entrance and saved the day.
Lashley had been taken out by the Main Event Mafia in a backstage attack, so his tag team partner, Mick Foley, had to go it alone against Angle and Kevin Nash in the main event (Angle’s world title and Nash’s Legends title were both at stake). Just as Foley was about to tap out to Angle’s anklelock, the lights went out. When they came back on, Sting was in the crowd, which distracted Angle and Nash. Then the lights went out again, and this time when they came on, Lashley was in the ring with a bandage around his head. Lashley hit a spear on Nash, allowing Foley to score the pin and win the Legends title.
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
It was the 200th episode of Impact on Spike, which really is a major accomplishment. When TNA was formed in 2002, the odds of it lasting a year – much less seven – and getting a two-hour weekly show in prime time were long. TNA might be a blip on the radar compared to WWE, but that’s inconsequential. Just the fact that there is another company with a cable TV deal and international exposure is a good thing for the industry. ...
TNA made a big deal about this week’s show lasting more than two hours, but the overrun ended up being just four minutes. …
In addition to Hernandez, Matt Morgan also looks to be on the verge of attaining main event status. He and A.J. Styles had a good match in the first of their best-of-three series for a berth in the main event at the Hard Justice pay-per-view. Morgan displayed some good heel mannerisms. I especially liked the spot when Morgan picked Styles up for a side slam, made out like he was looking at his watch, and then just dropped him.
Styles won the match with a breathtaking springboard 450 splash to take a 1-0 lead. I’m hoping that Morgan ends up winning the next two. It appears that Styles is going to have a program with Eric Young, so I expect Young to end up costing Styles the series. …
Styles once again sounded stupid when he said he “never saw it coming” in regard to Young turning on him. Don West rightfully pointed out that “everyone could see that coming.” If I was writing this show, there’s no way I would allow the heel commentator to state the obvious, while a top babyface comes off looking clueless. …
Speaking of making babyfaces look bad (a TNA specialty), the announcers said that Beer Money had attacked Scott Steiner and Booker T. in the back, but when they cut to it, it was Steiner and Booker who were beating on Robert Roode and James Storm. …
I’m not sure I buy Young as a foreign heel, but it is good to see him as the leader of a faction. It’s obvious that he’ll never have a second career as a barber, as his attempt to shave his head in the ring was unsuccessful (he couldn’t seem to get the clippers to work). It’s just as well, because I really don’t think it would be a good look for him. …
The British Invasion winning the IWGP tag team titles from Team 3D was a surprise. Brutus Magnus is starting to grow on me. …
Traci Brooks cut a nice heel promo. She had the line of the night: “This business isn’t made for ladies. It’s made for bitches like me.” …
I was glad to see Tara get a sit-down interview, but I thought it was a little disappointing. It seemed to be more about getting West over than her. …
I’m all for The Motor City Machine Guns getting a story line, but couldn’t Vince Russo have come up with something more original than having them sit in the audience holding up “conspiracy victims” signs? Chris Jericho did that angle more than a decade ago in WCW.

Lashley on the stick was a little boring to me .... too mechical , no emotion . It just doesn't come naturally to him to talk smack .
I'm liking this Hernandez thing , long overdue IMO .
Traci Brooks ..... what can I say ?? :)
Now Kevin , if TNA would bring back another biotch ( Shelly Martinez ) life would be good . I'm all for it .

Execellent observations Kev. Hernandez can big a big star; he is very athletic and strong. Glad to see Tracy back. She is real good wrestler who has been totally underutilized in my opinion. Maybe the MCMs should join up with Eric Young?
Good write-up on the Green Day show the other night too. I was there and it was a great show. I assume you will be at Prog Nation tonight?

I don't know why are they doing this to Motor City Machine Guns. They are probably the best tag team in TNA as well as WWE,IMO. They deserve something better.
And yeah Kev, I just saw your profile on Twitter. Is it really you? If yes, say hello to your latest follower :P

When TNA started on Spike, Samoa Joe was undefeated. Now in consecutive weeks, a disqualification loss to Homicide and a pinfall loss to Hernandez. How times have changed. Kevin, what's going on with Jeff Jarrett?

C'mon Kev do we have to knit pick everything on TNA? I know it's your job and you do veil your comments of criticism with complements but it's the only other show on TV besides the "VInce I Bought & Own Wresting Empire" yes you do criticize the WWE equally but that's not my point, give the underdogs a break. Back in the day when USA network had AWA, World Class, TBS shows et all, the video at times was lame, the matches went from awesome one show to WTF the next but it was different, gave us options, and every damn show wasn't do or die for the companies. Vince has ruined wrestling, and the internet coverage is all we have and that is nothing but a wrestling version of Ebert and what's his name trashing movies. As the great Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo said, well I'm old I forgot what they said but they had a great song about critics being self absorbed and jealous. Just the same what does that make me when I read this every other day?

I was very happy to see Hernandez win clean. Joe putting someone over is so un-Triple H! The British Invasion winning in that way was so stupid. I didn't mind them winning, I expected that. It was just the way it was written that I had a problem with. So there you have it, TNA at its best early and reverting to its worst before the show was done. Love this column

I was very disappointed with TNA this week Hernadez basically sqaushed their #3 heel who for the laast 6 monthswas suppose to be this unstoppable monster. In 2 of their matches they had almost identical finishes the Main event & Knockout matches both were majority handicap matches then some one runs some interference and the team that was handicapped for the majority of the match steals a win especially in the TBP match when it was 3 on 1 where were the other 2 to break up the pin? The Tara interview was horrible if you ask me all it was I guess a way to set up a Tara-Kong Feud and your right all it did was try to make West look more like a heel announcer bringing in TBP every 10 sec. Really surprised that #D lost the IWGP titles because i thought New japan was real strick on who they want holding their belts and for them to be lost not in their federation is a surprise

I think while they're making changes they should change the silly name of the company.

I thought Eric Youngs promo went on far too long, I liked it but that honking voice of his starts to grate on your nerves after a while.
Is it just me or shouldn't they have made a bigger deal about the British Invasion winning the IWGP tag titles. Have those belts ever changed hands on American soil before?
The are rushing into the Tara/Kong feud way too fast. A nice slow build leading up to Bound for Glory should have been the way to go. Not to mention it should be for the Knockouts title. Instead we'll be treated to ODB vs Beautiful People.
I really hope I'm wrong on this but we'll be asking the question in a few weeks or so, "Didn't Hernendez beat Joe clean a while back." Why is he feuding with (place mid-carders name here)?
There were some hints in that show that made it seem like they are ready to strart pushing some of the younger guys. It's one thing to push them but it's another thing to have them stuck with bad booking.

West also had a strong line while Eric Young was failing to shave his head..."well he couldn't rehearse this".

TNA is more than a blip on the radar to wwe, TNA is coming up very fast.
I do think that TNA IMPACT needs to run for 3 hours or a seperate show - maybe TNA X Division.
Anyway TNA TNA TNA!!!!!!

I was surprised by Don West being so "pro-WWE" in his interview questions with Tara, talking about how "all good things must come to an end" and "tell us about your time/memories there". While I don't care much for outright WWE hatred, gushing about the competition seems foolish, too.

I like how Taz is apparently advising Joe to lose every week.

samoe joe lost his match lol i read the spoilers so yea

AJ Styles and Matt Morgan saved the show. I knew those two could have a good match and they delivered.
Frankie Kazarian appeared in the opening video quite a bit. Could Kaz be dropping the mask soon? Hopefully he gets a main event push again since he has the talent and he is charismatic.
I wonder if the IWGP title switch is legit. That could be the first time that those tag titles switched during a gimmick match (sorry, I'm not looking it up). I wonder why New Japan went along with the decision to change the title in a match that wasn't even a TV main event.
There wasn't a single X-Division match on the 200th show.
The Legends title goes from Nash to Foley. I'm starting to really dislike Foley, which is not good at all. I don't even like typing that. He needs to put over a young talent very soon. The Legends title will never mean anything.
Team 3D are played out and shouldn't appear every week on the show. They should appear as often as the MCMG are used now: every few weeks for no more than 4-6 minutes. The Machine Guns should be out there every other week...
If Hernandez wins the world title I will be shocked. I want to see it, but I doubt TNA has the guts to make it happen.
Did you hear about the shake-up in TNA creative? They should bring in Scott D'Amore and Raven.

Hi Kev,
I do like the much overdue Hernandez push! I think also TNA needs to add a second show or cut down on the main event mafia stuff. They're under utilizing much of their talent like the X-Division wrestlers.
I am wondering who TNA will bring in now that Wayne Cowen and Savio Vega got canned ! I would really like to see TNA hire Raven. He would be a great for TNA creative!
RESPONSE FROM KE: I would never advocate anyone losing their job, but I will say this: As long as Vince Russo is around, the creative direction isn't going to change all that much.

Kevin , in regard to TNA's recent firings in their creative team : NOW'S YOUR CHANCE ! :)

I hate to even bring this up, but someone has to - am I the only one who noticed the massive amounts of acne on Lashley? I was just getting back into wrestling during his final days with WWE, but I don't remember seeing it on him then.
Moving on...
If Matt Morgan is used right, he has limitless potential. A guy his size with the mix of strength and agility which he possesses...I can't remember anyone like him. I'd say Undertaker comes closest, but even he can't move the way Morgan does. The guy is an absolute freak, much like Brock Lesnar. Morgan is a decent worker, too, and if he continues to improve, the sky is the limit. The only potential pitfall I see is something all these genetic freaks (Lesnar, Big Show) have to face, and that is that it is very difficult for them to sell for guys who in a legitimate fight they would squash in about two seconds.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Hernandez win, but then again it just shows once again how completely inept and clueless TNA is. As a poster above pointed out, they've been building him for nearly a year into this monster heel, and now he's jobbing left and right. I've never been a Samoa Joe guy, but even I have to say the way they're handling him is ridiculous!

I'm kind of kidding (not really), but did anyone else think what I did with the new foreign faction?
It'd probably take some kind of Real American to teach them a lesson one day....

TNA is coming up very fast? Really? Impact has been on TV for several years now and has the same ratings as ECW. And if Superstars were shown on a network that had more exposure than WGN, I'm sure it would be competing with Impact on Thursdays. TNA released a video game last year to compete with Smackdown Vs. Raw. It was a decent game. This year due to a bad business decision, TNA won't be releasing a game. TNA is way behind in merchandising, marketing and promotion, national TV exposure, attendance, PPV buys and ratings. The only thing they're coming up fast on is selling to Vinny Mac just like everyone else has.

Mr Eck, you are astonished and confused that Russo would re-use gimmicks and cheap thrills/heat?
The same Russo of turn Heel/Face weekly?
MCMG are simply the best tag team out right now, even though my beloved Jericho is holding gold. But it's not like they just right their own bits.
Yeah, the Tara thing was strange. What's worse though is the fact West is allowed on TV at all.
