The PWI 500

The PWI 500, Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s annual ranking of the top 500 stars in wrestling, hit newsstands last week. The special issue – now in its 19th year – is something I look forward to every year.

For this list, pro wrestling is regarded as actual competition and not scripted entertainment. The rankings reflect how wrestlers fared from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, and are based on the following criteria: titles won, major feuds, won-loss records, quality of opponents, prominence within their individual promotion, activity and overall ability. Wrestlers from all over the world are eligible for the PWI 500.

Triple H took the top spot this year. Following him in the top 10 are: Chris Jericho, John Cena, Edge, Randy Orton, Nigel McGuinness, Hiroshi Tanahashi, CM Punk, Sting and Ultimo Guerrero.

For the second straight year, I have compiled by own list using the same criteria as PWI. I call it The Ring Posts 20 (sorry, 20 is my limit) and it will be posted on Thursday. Feel free to send in your own rankings.

Maybe nitpicking, but u gotta flip Trips and Jericho there, no? Didn't he win the Triple Crown just in that time period?

Im surprised that Sting was the only TNA wrestler to make the top ten. Orton would have been either my 2nd or 3rd choice.

Nigel deserves a mention for his epic ROH World Championship reign, as does Chris Hero, who was Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (by most accounts the best indy company in North America) champion for all but one month of the timeframe, was pushed in NOAH in Japan, did great in Europe, and hit his stride in ROH to boot.

I'm really surprised that someone from ROH was listed before someone from TNA. For TNA to be considered as the main competition to WWE, I would have figured for sure that they'd have at least more than one in the Top 10. And the only TNA guy to crack the Top 10 is over 50 years old!!!

A New Zealander made the list this year!! For the first time ever (I think). Dal "The Deal" Knox was number 326. Yay!

I agree with Jason, Orton seems like he should be pretty high up there and Trips should not be number 1 I think; Jericho should be higher than Trips no matter what. CM Punk definitely should be moved towards the top as should Jeff Hardy. I could be thinking of more recent events for them, but they have been popular for a long time, come to think of it, Shawn Micahaels too. Surprised Kurt Angle wasn't on that list, he is really well known and every time I watch TNA he has a title.
I guess my top 10 or so would be:
John Cena (I don't like it, but he his win/loss record must be good since he clears the ring of 30 heels with no prob)
Shawn Michaels (although his win-loss record with the whole JBL storyline may kill it, but recognition and popularity would move him up)
Jeff Hardy
Kurt Angle
Rey Mysterio

wow triple h got top spot
hmmm i wonder how steph managed that one...

Jericho, Orton, & Punk in that order!

The list is bogus if Jeff Hardy is not in the top 10. HHH at number one?! Give me an aspirin.

Kev I know 1 thing I your no. 1 better not be a guy who hasn't wrestled in 4 months, other than that I didn't know that the Mcmahons had Oscar on the payroll with that pick.

Chris Jericho
Jeff Hardy
Randy Orton
CM Punk
John Cena
Kurt Angle
Triple H
Shawn Michaels

10 (and WWE+TNA) = my limit
