Smackdown: Jeff Hardy says goodbye
As a defeated Jeff Hardy walked up the ramp for the last time (for a while), an emotional audience saluted him with a mixture of cheers and tears. After Hardy made his way onto the stage, he turned to face the crowd to take one final bow, and then … BAM! Out of nowhere, his tormentor, CM Punk, snuck up behind him and blasted him in the back of the head with the world heavyweight title belt that Punk had retained moments earlier in a loser-leaves-WWE steel cage match.
So the final scene of Friday’s episode of Smackdown was not of Hardy walking off into the sunset, it was of Punk standing over the fallen superstar, taunting both him and his legion of fans.
It was a fitting finale to a fantastic feud that took fans on a thrilling roller-coaster ride. From start to finish, the Hardy-Punk program was brilliantly executed, as the story line, promos and matches all struck the right chord. Punk, Hardy and the Smackdown creative team deserve a lot of credit for their combined efforts.
I am especially impressed with how Hardy handled himself over the past few months. Looking to take a sabbatical after his contract expired at the end of July, Hardy agreed to stay through the SummerSlam pay-per-view and one final Smackdown appearance. Even though he technically had one foot out the door, Hardy continued to put his body on the line and deliver the breathtaking performances that have defined his career. He did so while suffering from two herniated discs in his back and nagging neck problems (according to his brother Matt's WWE Universe blog). Hardy seems to have come a long way when it comes to maturity and dependability.
The main beneficiary of Hardy’s selflessness – in addition to all the fans who were entertained by the program, that is – is Punk. Hardy put Punk over strong in both the TLC match at SummerSlam and the cage match on Friday’s show. Even as Hardy was saying goodbye to his fans, Hardy allowed Punk to make the moment about him. Whatever success Punk has from this point forward will be due in large part to Hardy.
I hope when Hardy eventually walked through the curtain after the cameras stopped rolling, Punk was there to repeat what thousands in the arena had just been chanting: “Thank you, Jeff.”
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
The Hardy-Punk cage match did not disappoint. The highlight was Punk superplexing Hardy, who was standing on the top of the cage. ...
Punk had a great line in his show-opening promo when he told the crowd, “If any of you felt the way I feel physically right now, you’d be on a morphine drip. Some of you probably already are.” ...
The John Morrison and Matt Hardy versus The Hart Dynasty match was fun while it lasted. I would like to see the two teams wrestle again when they have longer than four minutes. After THD lost, I liked how Jim Ross immediately said that he didn’t think any less of them. ...
Dolph Ziggler’s attack on Rey Mysterio after Mysterio’s match against Kane got a lot of heat. ...
I liked the Mysterio-Kane match. Mysterio really seems to bring out the best in him. The Great Khali, on the other hand, brings out the worst in Kane (and just about everyone else). Now here’s the kicker – the Kane-Khali feud isn’t over yet. ...
Drew McIntyre made an effective debut. I think a lot of the crowd probably thought he was an enhancement guy out there to put over R-Truth. That’s why it was such a shock when McIntyre jumped R-Truth while Truth was entering the ring singing his “What’s Up?” song. McIntyre, who briefly appeared on WWE television a couple years ago before being sent to Florida Championship Wrestling, is only 24 and has a lot of potential. I’m a little surprised that WWE isn’t starting him out on ECW. ...
I was surprised to see Melina attack Michelle McCool – who was at ringside on crutches – after defeating Layla. I would have bet anything that McCool was going to do the predictable thing and hit Melina with one of the crutches behind the referee’s back to cost her the match. ...
One final thought: Melina’s split on the ring apron was a lot more entertaining when she did it wearing a skirt. Darn PG rating.

In my opinion, ECW doesn't need new people right now unless they future endeavor someone (and I don't mean that they shouldn't ... if you know what I'm saying). I am glad that McIntyre is on Smackdown. I have heard him cut two promos now: once at a house show, and
once last night, and I agree that he has a lot of potential.

I got a q: since Melina attacked a McCool on chrouthes, wouldn't that make Melina a heel, and McCool a face?

Couldn't help but get a bit emotional when Jeff lost. That said, CM Punk is just awesome as a heel. Thank goodness they're putting him over like this.
And two things I wanna ask about Chris Jericho: one, was that a Fozzy-singed entrance theme? And two...okay, Jericho didn't job this time, but why he was tossed around like a punching bag? Bah.

I guess I never will get used to these WWE cage matches, where you can climb over the top and win.
But I know for damn sure I never saw a loser-leaves town match where the loser gets to make a farewell speech after he loses.Usually the loser comes back next week with a mask and he's the Yellow Dog or the Midnight Rider with a big splotch on his belly that nobody seems to notice.
I'm still disappointed Matt didnt get involved.

After seeing Punk wail Hardy with the belt, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hardy back by Wrestlemania to take on Punk in an I Quit or Last Man Standing match.

Being used to having wrestling being devoid of emotion. A moment like the other night, bread in true emotion is refreshing!

Punk on the mike has been a breathe of fresh air in WWE.
I love his straightedge heel gimmick, its the best out there these days.
Punk seems to be filling in for Edge as top heel quite nicely.
Hardy should thank him also in that Punk's mike work helped compensate for Hardy's big shortcomings there.

I still think Matt should have gotten the opportunity to face CM Punk for the tite. I hate it when Edge, Cena and the Undertaker are out from injury and as soon as they come back they get a title shot. How many times are they going to snub Matt?

im going to miss hardy i hope he do come back thats my favorite wrestler it was a emotionaial night
Posted by: beauty | August 29, 2009 11:13 PM
I only caught half of Punk's promo but all I was thinking while he was speaking was "this guy is doing an incredible job!"
Hardy will be two times as popular when he returns.

wwe universe is gonna miss him. but I still can't wait for a punk vs deadman match...

I'm not gonna watch smackdown anymore because Jeff is now gone ...will only keep up with the WWE through the net.My only wish is that he will be back in the Money In The Bank match at WM26 and win...
Do you think its possible Kev?
RESPONSE FROM KE: It wouldn't surprise me at all.

I love Morrison, but the Hart Dynasty are going to have to win a match one of these days. That being said, Morrison and Matt Hardy worked surprisingly well together. Still, I hope they don't stick Morrison in another tag team. The Miz held him back for long enough!

It was emotional smackdown on friday. The shots of people in the crowd looking dejected and crying was a nice touch. This programme has been really good and given sum really good moments. (Jeff standing on the top of the ladder at summerslam before he swantoned punk through the table comes to mind). Hope punk does appreciate wot jeffs done on his way out coz I've read he can be standoffish and arrogant. One thing - I know they've done it to take the focus of jeff leaving but it still niggled at me. Why the undertaker just comes bk and doesn't have to fight any kind of no1 contender match for the belt therefore bypassing all the hard work john morrisons done and then there's also matt hardy as awell. Probably no one would expect them to win but would be good to keep sum sort of continuity going. Also like the way jeff put over his brother in his farewell speech.
Posted by: serena | August 30, 2009 3:09 AM
Smackdown was great as always; Cm Punk cut a great promo at the start: "I'll remind everyone what happened at Summerslam because you were all probaly too intoxidated to remember" - classic, Punk was on the money in that promo as usual. CM Punk + Jeff Hardy = Feud of the year.
Though was a bit dissapointed Matt and Morrison were only used in a 3 minute match; given longer they could've had a great match, but they were thrown on right at the start, all four kind of wasted in my opinion.
Also I'm glad R Truth is back, but what happened to those videos before he debuted building him up as a potential world heavyweight champion? Drew McIntyre looked great, and cut a decent promo, but it seems he will be getting his push at R Truths expense...
Though I'm only nit picking, Smackdown was great as always. Though one thing which gets to me: Undertaker is now the number 1 contender? What about Morrison? Atleast Taker isn't HHH and won't hog the title scene but happily put talent over...but Morrison said a few weeks ago he would challenge the champion after Summerslam...seems he gets knocked down due to Taker, and Matt is not utilised at all...Taker I'm sure will be great, but maybe Raw need him more?
Posted by: Stan | August 30, 2009 4:46 AM
Lots of turns seem taunted: not only did Melina attack a handicaped McCool, but McCool gave, before the match, kind of a face promo, saying how she was sorry for the audience that she couldn't compete. This may head for a Melina/Michelle simultaneous turn in the near future, espeacially given that Melina/Maria segment backstage, when Melina tried to turn Maria on Dolph, saying that he brought a woman backstage at Summerslam. When it turned out that the woman was Dolph's sister, Melina appeared, retrospectively, like a heel trying to manipulate the naive Maria... I wonder where all this is headed, and also how long will the odd heel-face couple Ziggler-Maria continue...

After seeing jeff losing to cm funk in a steel cage match I will not be surprise when he come back for cm punk in wreslin mania 26 in and i will leave cm punk for the undertaker at the breaking point to give him jeff wanted to giv him
Posted by: ann | August 30, 2009 1:23 PM
will miss hardy wrestle, but not him cutting promos. ("3 words steel cage match"*cringe)
Khali really does bring out the worst in Kane, they should turn Khali heel and have him fight Hornswoggle on ECW for 1 min each week.
McIntyre was surprising, but I guess that means R-Truth is falling further down the totum poll (pretty ricky really coming back to haunt him).
Question: how is WWE gonna work this Breaking Point PPV? Of the current champions only JeriShow have submission moves they regularly use. And of the challengers/likely challengers. Only Cena and William Regal use submission moves.....is everyone else going to borrow the figure four and sharpshooter???

In my 20+ years of watching WWF/WWE, I have never seen the emotional reaction from the fans upon someone's departure like Jeff Hardy received on Friday. People were literally crying. Say what you want about the man...he's a spot monkey, he's a drug addict...Bottom line - he is loved. The fans live and breathe with him. Very few will ever have that kind of magnetism.
For the past 9 months, Jeff has been the best I have ever seen him in his career. He and Punk had the "feud of the year" so far and he also graciously put CM Punk over even in his final moments. He leaves the WWE better than when he found it which is the mark of greatness and of a true gentleman. Thank you, Jeff Hardy. We will miss you. Be well.

Jeff created his own off-season.
Posted by: Woody | August 30, 2009 11:57 PM
With the many high spots and high risk spots that Jeff performs, he takes tremendous punishment in that ring. It's not surprising that he needs some time off. He gives everything he has every night. If anyone deserves a break, he does.
Posted by: Mark | August 31, 2009 12:53 AM
Why would Teddy Long agree to let Hardy and Punk compete in a cage match 5 days after a TLC match? Then, why would he allow them to turn it into a loser leaves WWE match? Either way, he loses one of his top guys. Then, why would he put the returning Undertaker in a championship match without having to earn his way back to the top, bypassing Matt Hardy and Morrison.
I hope he is still on probation.
Posted by: Bob Buscaglia | August 31, 2009 1:59 AM
Agree totally with you on how their feud played out. Very well done, and kudos to Hardy for putting Punk over.
With that said, I can see a long title run for Punk with the "straight edge superstar" gimmick. Undertaker is next, and easily fits in with his past. Think you are on the money with Mysterio after UT with his recent suspension.
This is fresh, and entertaining.

alright jeff hardy is one of the greastest wrestlers of all time and you people that like cm punk r crazy thats not fair jeff would of won if cm punk didnt jump him in the begining and the refs are 2 dumb & lazy to do anything sure jeff did things but hey hes human and makes mistakes ive made mistakes and i dont believe for 1 second cm punk has never smoked drank or took perscriptions and the way he insults people is rediculous i was so devistated when jeff hardy had to say good bye because he is my hero and i dont think im going to watch wresteling because he isnt on it anymore so i lvoe you jeff and will miss you terribly
Posted by: kay | August 31, 2009 3:12 PM
Cm punk is one of the worst talkers ever and he only won at Summer slam because he did not take risks like jeff beacuse he dose not have the pasion like jeff to take risks and still be able to hang on. So im happy he is going to face the Undertaker at breack point and he will get hell as what he diserves and we will have a new World heavywigt campion the Undertaker so cm punk get ready for THE DEVIL'S GATE! And one hell of a night you better no someone who can pick up your fat a-- after the Under taker gies you a conncusion
RESPONSE FROM KE: You lost me after "CM Punk is one of the worst talkers ever"
Posted by: cam | August 31, 2009 3:26 PM
So let me get this straight (from a storyline standpoint), Teddy Long was just willing and at ease to let either his current WHC CM Punk or perhaps the top babyface in the company at the time leave?
Posted by: Legacy.1 | August 31, 2009 5:10 PM
Melina is doing her "splits" with Dolf Ziggler you heard it here first!
As if Punk wasn't going to get a ton of heat for showing Hardy the way out of the WWE he goes and cracks him over the head with the belt as he is waving good-bye. Briliant!!
You posted last week saying Punk was the best heel in the business. At the time I disagreed, I thought it was Jericho, but after that little stunt Punk is going to be getting alot of real heat.
I just hope Punk doesn't turn around and drop the title to Undertaker at Breaking Point.
I'm looking forward to this match, mainly because I've been wanting to see Punk break out the Anaconda Vice again at some point. If that match is some sort of submission match, I don't see Punk having much of a chance. The UT tapping out is unheard of.
Question: The anouncers and Teddy Long and I belive Vince said on RAW that all "main event matches" would be submission matches. So does that mean that not all the matches are like that, and if so what constitutes a "main event match?" Because a submission match between Regal and Christian would be awesome but I don't think WWE holds the ECW title match in such high standards as to call it a main event match.
Posted by: Andre the Midget | August 31, 2009 6:09 PM
I don't think the undertaker vs cm punk match makes sense especially considering its a submission match. I mean punks been doing really well so but not well enough to be thhe first one to make taker submit so that leaves me to believe that there going to take the belt away from punk after only a couple of weeks after he regained it. LIKE I SAID NO SENSE
Posted by: M6000 | August 31, 2009 8:46 PM
First, Hardy is just taking time off, He will be back, but hopefully not too far off in the future. I do personally like CM Puck as a face more, however he is quite good as a heel too.
Second, "
Why would Teddy Long agree to let Hardy and Punk compete in a cage match 5 days after a TLC match? Then, why would he allow them to turn it into a loser leaves WWE match? Either way, he loses one of his top guys. Then, why would he put the returning Undertaker in a championship match without having to earn his way back to the top, bypassing Matt Hardy and Morrison.
I hope he is still on probation."
Taker was not ever on probation. It was just part of the story line. He too was just taking time off like Hardy is doing now. Taker, like cena and others, Gets instant title shots because that is what most of the WWE Universe wants to see. They give the shots to the guys that bring in the money for the company. I see in the near future Batista coming back again and getting an instant title shot.

I felt that making him leave was a bad business move and I don't understand why teddy made Jeff and punk do a steel cage match when they just did a TLC match. I wany Jeff back now. Does anyone know when Jeff could be back and if?
Posted by: simone | September 2, 2009 5:40 AM
CM Punk is the most cruel wrestler ever a direct opposite of what he claims going by what he did to Hardy and personal assaoult. Hardy is my man and i respect him. Punk should learn to match his claim of being a saint with practical application. He always likes cheap victories that is why he incapacitated Hardy. Hardy you remain an epitome of greatness.
Posted by: james reynolds | September 2, 2009 6:36 AM
Wow so many people who really believe in this storyline and the wrestling...Don't get me wrong I have nothing wrong with that, it's just suprsing to me...but it's good to see, if it weren't for the "believers" CM Punk and Jericho would be the most cheered people on Smackdown. Sometimes I try not to think of the outcome/who it will benifit/who will get pushed, but just sit back and enjoy the match; like magic it's best when you believe in it and not figure out how it's done...
After reading some of the comments I am kind of woried for CM Punk...I too can't really remember Taker ever taping (maybe to Angle once?) so that suggests a Taker win...but imagine if Taker did tap out, how over would Punk be! I think maybe the match will end in a DQ or something...maybe count out or Taker not able to answer count, I really hope they don't turn Punk into a cowardily heel.
Posted by: Stan | September 2, 2009 10:25 AM
CM Punk is the man. The best champ and heel in the sport today.
Agreed, that post match attack was excellent. It totally came out of nowhere. Great match, great rivalry, great ending.
Jeff Hardy went out on a strong note with such a good feud, and he helped get CM Punk over by allowing some of his past issues to get trashed by the Straight Edge Superstar. I don't think many other wrestlers will willingly allow themselves to be a target for CM Punk in that way.
For that I give Jeff Hardy props...
CM Punk can retain the title by DQ, so he has an escape from their submission match.
Now I wonder who will step up to fill the Jeff Hardy baby-face void? Besides Taker...
