Rey Mysterio suspended

WWE Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio has been suspended 30 days for violating the company’s Wellness Program, wwe.com reported.

Mysterio’s suspension takes effect on Wednesday, WWE said. That gives the company time to get the belt off him. The most likely scenario is that he drops the title to Dolph Ziggler Tuesday at the Smackdown tapings. Mysterio originally was to defend the title against Ziggler at next month’s Breaking Point pay-per-view.

According to a recent report in The Wrestling Observer, Mysterio had been promised a long run as Intercontinental champion after he voiced his unhappiness about his status in the company.

Following the death of Chris Benoit in 2007, Mysterio’s name was linked to the federal investigation of Benoit’s physician, Dr. Phil Astin III. Astin was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his conviction on illegally dispensing prescription drugs to 17 patients from 2002 until his arrest in 2007. One of the patients was Oscar Gutierrez, the real name of Mysterio. When questioned about his involvement with Astin in an interview, Mysterio said he was prescribed pain medication from Astin due to six knee operations. He denied ever using steroids.

However, Mysterio also was named in a 2007 story on Sports Illustrated's Web site about a steroid sting in Arizona. Mysterio allegedly received prescriptions for the steroids Nandrolone and Stanozolol.

I'm not in any way trying to make light of the situation, but given the nature of world heavyweight champion CM Punk's promos since his heel turn, I wonder if Mysterio's suspension for a drug policy violation will lead to a Punk-Mysterio program when he returns.

Well, some of us wondered where The Undertaker's return would leave John Morrison. The silver lining in this suspension is that a Morrison-Ziggler program with the Intercontinental title at stake could happen in the near future.

Not that I'm happy this happened, but this is the way if your going to have a drug policy you use it. You don't make excuses because the guy is one of the top stars in your company. I'm upset for all of the kids (and yes, adults) who wear Rey's mask at all the events. I'm disappointed in Rey especially after what has happened to Eddie Guerrero and Benoit who we all know were close friends with Rey. Hopefully this was just a little bump in the road and not a large sinkhole that Rey has fallen into and can't get out of.

Way to go Rey ... you are the kind of role model I would want kids to follow .. thankfully the WWE holds all members of their company to same standards

Quite sad. I'd assume it's tied to trying to mask all the wear and tear his body takes so that he wouldn't have to give up his spot. That or aren't they suspending for weed now?

It does kind of work out for the writers though.

i once again don't see what the big deal is how come only NFL players generally get a free pass for using this stuff and if anyone is surprised then your a fool look at Rey over the years he went from a 100 Lbs cruserweight to about 170 lbs and you can tell by his body build that it is not natural the way he put on weight over the years. Rey is a entertainer all athletes are and i can say he's earned my money by whatever he had to do so i'm not mad at him and my kids like him but always remember you should always be your childrens role model not some actor or athlete etc. and I finally think its fine that we are thrown a bone everuy now & then but until you tell me that Thor & the Chairman failed i will always take this test with a grain of salt because Rey is expendable just like letting hardy go for a while.

I can understand why some of these guys would use painkillers, given their schedule and the bumps they take and so on. But if it gets to the point where you feel that you need drugs to wrestle, I really think it's time to retire. Don't keep on punishing your body if your body tells you it's tired and needs--at the very least--a rest.

The guys who use steroids? I don't have as much sympathy for them. I understand that it's difficult to become the next star, that you're fighting with lots of other guys for the opportunity to get pushed, and that how you look plays a part in what the company decides to do with you. I can see how it'd be tempting, but it's taking a shortcut, and it's not necessarily harmless to your health either.

Don't you think it would be difficult to book Mysterio as the face if his indiscretions dealt with PEDs? Punk gets heat against Hardy over intentionally vague criticisms that seem to harken to recreational drug use. For whatever reason, the public seems to be more willing to forgive that sort of drug use than steroid use for athletes (compare Josh Hamilton to Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez). If they acknowledged on air that Mysterio had used PEDs, I think it would be hard to book him as a face for a long time.

Bet it's the last time he complains about his "unhappiness about his status in the company."

Im not surprised about rey failing another drug test....but now it opens up so many avenues for the IC Title....after superstars tonight Im still not impessed with ziggle as new IC chamion probably next tuesday taping.....after finlay and knoxx carried ziggler in the triple threat match makes me think either knoxx or finlay would be more challenging than ziggler

Christopher makes a good point up there; Morrison-Ziggler program does make sense, and would probably be better for Morrison. The only single belt he's held is the ECW title, so it would be good to get an IC reign or two on his resume before seriously challenging for a world title.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Morrison has held the IC title (as Johnny Nitro in 2006).

DAMN!

I'm surpised Rey did not get caughted sooner. He's short but he is very muscular. Rey did not get that big until he entered WWE. Someone will have to fill his void on Smackdown.

Before anyone starts saying that WWE is now showing that it will suspend all wrestlers, I'd like to say it's preposterous that the HGH users like HHH and Kane have never been caught. All you need to do is research the side effects of HGH (protruding brow line is one obvious one) and you'll see that these two wrestlers have obviously been on and, considering their ages and current physiques, currently take. I could see them suspending Kane but no way would they ever allow HHH to "test" positive.

Hey Kevin, I'll be at the Ocean City Convention Center for the Smackdown/ECW house show tomorrow night. Do you think they would make Rey drop it there to Dolph? I think it would be a good way to promote house shows with a title change like that. Fans would want to go more often to the house shows because of potential title changes. Plus, I don't think title changes at house shows would be such a big deal. After all, they did Royal Rumble qualifying matches on them. Any thoughts?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I like the idea of changing titles at house shows every so often, but I don't think it's going to happen this time.

I'm not sure how much parents will take of their children cheering possible drug abusers as the "bad guy" tells them it's not a good way to go...

Kinda ironic HHH, Taker, Cena are never nabbed in this....

Not justifying or defending Rey

But I guess those guys are all natural. RIGHT!!!!

I don't think there will be a Punk/Rey rivalry for now. Punk's got Undertaker to think about for now so and the suspension is just one month. I don't think a rivalry between Punk and Taker would last that little

What difference would it make if Mysterio dropped the strap (oh,Im sorry,I mean the "title") in OC?Everybody knows that for the last 25 years in WWF/E ,if it doesnt happen on TV,it didnt happen.

This is to Nick. Great observation. You obviously know what you're talking about.HHH and Kane both have caveman eyebrows.I've always noticed that on both of them.plus they are both older guys who shouldnt have that much muscle definition.they both seem to be on HGH.WWE probably is using the MLB arguement that there is no test for HGH. I dont think Cena is on anything tho.He certainly looks more natural than HHH,Kane,Batista or even Rey. I wonder what Vince is on.probably everything he can get his hands on. HHH probably shows him how its done : )

Don't go after Rey without looking at the other top stars that have violated the same policy. Edge, etc. But here is my big beef with the WWE. Randy Orton has been caught violating this policy more times than anybody and should have been fired years ago, but has anyone said anything about that, nope. Hey i do not approve or support anything that Rey has done because my younger brothers are huge fans of his, but don't go after one if you do not go after them all, top stars or non top stars.

Not a big surprise here, as the smaller guys are more subjected to the big bumps than are the big guys.

He has gotten huge over the years though, but he was probably using them just as much to heal quicker from the nightly pounding he takes, like Jeff Hardy.

Not that I'm a proponent of PEDs, but I highly doubt these guys'll be able to keep off the shelf without them.

This is a big pipe dream, but if the performers had the balls to unionize, they could fight for better working conditions and a suitable schedule instead of 200+ days a year of taking bumps. No other athlete is asked or expected to take the abuse these guys take.

Speaking of 'roid abuse, is the WWE seriously going to put the belt on another juicer? Of course I'm referring to Dolph Ziggler. Another bad idea.

i dont know why you have to go after guys like hhh, cena, kane & taker. cena may have used them to get the body he has, but he has WAY too much respect for what he does to be using now. kane and taker are 7ft tall, ive never seen someone that tall and skinny as a rail, they probably had a natural build that they just perfected with actual work. hhh? i would doubt that hes NEVER used before, but ive read his book, he works out hard a lot and since he was like 12, hes married and has kids, and he was good friends with benoit, after what happened i doubt hed touch the stuff. plus even if wwe was keeping it quiet that hhh was using, someone woul;d end up spilling the beans: a tester, a wrestler, SOMEONE.

Kev, thanks for the correction. I got back into wrestling in 2007, so my knowledge of what happened between, say, 2000-2006 is pretty hazy.

I've heard commentators remark on his ECW reign, but not on his IC reign - is this because of the name change? I can't imagine it would be, but can't think of another reason.

go rey nothing is going to happen ur cool stop using drugs im a great fan of yours lates lwk!!!!!!!!

hhh? i would doubt that hes NEVER used before, but ive read his book

My first instinct was to make a sarcastic reply, but I'll restrain myself and just say that I don't believe HHH is above lying.

This is a big pipe dream, but if the performers had the balls to unionize, they could fight for better working conditions and a suitable schedule instead of 200+ days a year of taking bumps. No other athlete is asked or expected to take the abuse these guys take.

I agree 100%. Athletes who play basketball, football, baseball and hockey are all able to rest between at least SOME games (players in the NBA have a day or two between games more often than they have to play on back to back days, while baseball players usually have a day between each series). And that's just to recover from exerting themselves.

After working that TLC match, Hardy and Punk should've had at least a week to rest up before getting in the ring again. Instead, they had to work a steel cage match 48 hours later. Punk needs to keep doing house shows after this, and if Jeff were still part of the roster, he would be expected to do the same.

I assume that if these guys say that they're in too much pain to work, then they face either getting buried or being fired. It shouldn't be that way, and while I don't condone the use of performance enhancing drugs either I agree that the expectations placed on the talent are one reason so many guys use them.

Rey Mysterio used steroids? He should get his money back. He still looks like a malnourished dwarf. Having Mysterio win any match is about as credible as Greg Gagne defeating Bruiser (King Kong) Brody.

I swear, whenever Mysterio comes on, I change the channel. His mic skills are hideous, especially with the high pitched nasal tome of his voice. I remember when Kevin Nash picked him up in the back parking lot area of an arena and threw him like a dart into the side of a construction trailer like the guy weighed 50 pounds. Sorry, Mysterio just isn't a credible talent to me.

"Randy" - that's the problem w / those south of the border 'roids .

Given that it is scripted entertainment, why should drug use, recreational or otherwise, be such an issue. It is not like they are running the Olympics where it is ideally a legitimate competition. I haven't seen Hollywood or TV bring a wellness policy in yet...that's right, the screens would be blank.

Please don't misunderstand me, I certainly don't condone the use of any of these substances...I just think the hypocrisy is astounding....The Chairman, anyone????

HA! Rey gets Suspended. Well I say good Rittens I don't think theres a place for a little guy like Rey in this sport anyway. I wonder if he realisesthat roids wouldn't have helped him anyway not unless they made him taller

Hello, I'm searching google and found your blog worth reading it. Nice post. Hope it helps. Thanks!
