Pandemonium breaks loose on TNA Impact

A lot of times when I watch TNA Impact, I feel like I’m watching old WCW reruns, and not just because there are so many former WCW stars on the roster. The lame comedy, nonsensical booking and plethora of pole matches remind me of the dying days of WCW.

Thursday night’s episode of Impact, however, reminded me of the glory days of WCW.

In the middle of the program, a riot broke out involving just about every top star on the TNA roster. It started in the ring and carried over to the back and outside the building. Eventually, the police arrived to restore order. Much like when the nWo was running rampant on Nitro in 1996, there was a sense of chaos and excitement that made it impossible to want to turn the channel.

It’s still early in the story line, but it appears that TNA has finally gotten the warring factions angle right, with the Main Event Mafia and World Elite forming an alliance to take on the rest of TNA. This should work a lot better than the young guys-versus-old guys angle that buried the young guys. Now, Eric Young and The British Invasion can get a rub by standing with the MEM, while Hernandez, Daniels and The Motor City Machine Guns can get a rub by being associated with Mick Foley, Sting, Bobby Lashley, etc.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

Showing some of the brawl through a security camera was a nice touch. …

Coming off his big win over Samoa Joe last week, Hernandez was featured prominently. When another brawl got going at the end of the show, Hernandez hit the ring swinging a chain and sent the heels fleeing. The final shot was of him celebrating with Foley, Sting and Lashley. …

Hernandez also did a sit-down interview with Mike Tenay, which sounded like a good idea, but I don’t think it really did a whole lot to help him get over. The interview lacked focus and Hernandez didn’t project much charisma. …

The Matt Morgan-A.J. Styles match was decent, but I would like to have seen it go another 8-10 minutes. …

Robert Roode delivered a good promo about Young. I like Beer Money a lot, but as anyone who has been reading this blog for any length of time knows, I’m a big advocate of giving Roode a major singles push. This promo was another reminder of why I think Roode should be in the TNA world title picture. …

It’s great to see a talented guy like Young getting an opportunity to really show what he can do. Playing a comedic character got him noticed, but I thought for a while that he was capable of more. …

I see that Young eventually did get those clippers to work. I was wrong about the buzz-cut not being a good look for him. …

The women’s tag match that pitted Sarita and Taylor Wilde against Alissa Flash and Traci Brooks was entertaining. …

I was surprised when Brooks knocked Roode off the top rope during the eight-man tag match that the announcers didn’t mention that there was a lot of history between the two. …

It’s still hard to tell from week to week whether The Motor City Machine Guns are babyfaces or heels. They double-crossed Daniels during his match against Young, but then ended up fighting alongside Daniels and the other babyfaces during the riot. …

Did Brother Ray really refer to The British Invasion as “fairies?” …

I suppose it made sense that Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed would seek payback against Abyss for him attacking them recently, but trying to collect a bounty on a fellow babyface doesn’t seem like something the good guys should be doing. …

Lethal calling Abyss “Andre” during their scuffle wasn’t very funny, but Jeremy Borash preparing to whack Abyss with a hammer to collect the bounty was.

I had the opposite reaction to the brawl. I found it so boring I turned the station when the police showed up.

A guy named Hernandez swinging a chain. Where have I seen that before...

The Machine Guns helped Daniels at the end of the program because the two World Elite guys attacked them at the end of the Daniels/Young match

RESPONSE FROM KE: Yeah, I got that. My point is that I wish they would either be faces or heels rather than going back and forth all the time. It kind of made Daniels look silly for asking them to watch his back. Like you said, the only reason they helped him was because they got attacked.

Kevin , all I can say is , I wish Traci Brooks' tights were cut just a little bit lower .

I don't have much to say other than this was probably the best Impact I've ever seen. Minor complaints would be a below average Morgan-Styles match (not bad, but they can do better) and the weird bit that you touched on involving Abyss and Lethal Consequences. I also would have liked to have seen more of the Machine Guns. On the bright side, the women's match was very, very strong, and the whole "brawl" was incredibly exciting and entertaining.

The brawl was one of the most entertaining things I have seen on Impact in quite some time. Also, I think that everyone in TNA either has beat up Lethal Consequences backstage or will beat up Lethal Consequences backstage.

I thought that was a wonderful brawl, especially coming in the same week when Tommy Dreamer brought a hot dog cart to an Extreme Rules Match. It all made me think of the Battle of New Orleans concession stand brawl in the UWF in 87.

Except I didnt understand why Buba Ray was whacking the top of a table while Booker was cowering down at the bottom. That was weird.

Knockouts tag match was also really good.I wouldnt want to meet Traci or Alisa in a dark alley.

Thursday night was very reminiscent of Nash tossing Mysterio like a spear into the side of that WCW trailer outside of Disney or Daytona, wherever it was. It was probably a little more violent than I recall the WCW melee being but I guess that is just a sign of the times. TNA is starting to get it, just a little. Don West saying that he wanted to go outside and get him some was hilarious and Tenay didn't follow up with with at least a "Go on, then."

sorry, i have to stongly disagree with you about this episode of tna. it was dreadful as usual. the parking lot brawl was the worst segment if you ask me. way too drawn out and the punhces looked weaker and weaker. its like the wrestlers got tired of trying to sell their moves. another bomb for TNGay! one funny thing i noticed was any time they got in close on super gay erics face you could see that he missed shaving his head completely as there were long hairs still remaining. nice job.

Hey Kevin great read as always. You know I have been kind of hesitant to get into TNA and have only watched snip-its of it. But as bad as WWE has been, with the exception of Smackdown and occasionally ECW, it might not be a bad idea to tune in. I think I'll tune in next thursday and watch the whole thing, doesn't sound like to bad of a show.

I've been a TNA fan for a few years now - seen some great episodes of impact and some not so great, but I feel this was the best one I've seen in the last year or so!

The writing and booking of the matches actually seemed more focused, despite the "chaos", and made more sense consistently throughout the show than in months prior. I thought I read somewhere there was a change in writers? If this is the result, I really enjoyed it.

The most telling thing for me was that there wasn't a major moment (or two or three) where I was like WTF?!? or groaning at some lame attempt at comedy (WWE is guilty of it too).

Smackdown has been great - but I think TNA is on fire right now!

Also, I highly recommend catching ROH on HDNet if you can - the main event matches each week have consistently fantastic!! As if you don't have enough to do already - have you thought about reviewing the ROH shows?

Love the blog - thanks, and keep up the great work!

I've been watching TNA for about a year now and that was, by far, the best episode of Impact I have seen. If every episode of Impact was this good then WWE would have some serious competition.

Kev, ok got it, just saying though, as a casual viewer who has only watched the last two TNA Impacts (and reads your recaps to stay up to date otherwise), the reasoning for the turn was clear enough to me. Daniels and the Guns were made to look silly in the pre-match promo, and really the World Elite attack was unnecessary, but I thought the outcome worked out well because it added to the Good vs. Evil theme of the show.

i am glad to see The Beautiful people finally acting like the beautiful people. I thing that instead of jay calling abyss Andre he should have called him the Bossman since there build is similar and he uses a modified version of his finsher.

I think I heard Lethal call Dr. Stevie, Dr. Issac Yankum.

I thought that TNA was really fun this week. When the MEM start the show I tend to cringe, but thankfully they have aligned themselves with the World Elite.

Apparently Jim Cornette masterminded the brawl and maybe other parts of the show. Is there any wonder why the show maintained a consistent stride this week?

Seeing Magnus in the main event was a welcome change for the reason that it was something different, whether the match was spectacular or not. It was probably better than Foley vs. Nash will be on the upcoming PPV.

Team 3D nearly ruined the brawl with Brother Ray weakly smashing a chair against a table that Booker T was pinned under. He also does not need to cut the same repetitive interviews every week. It only took away from Roode's great speech and continued to show nothing new.

Did anyone hear about New Japan's dissatisfaction with TNA trying to dictate IWGP title changes? That nonsense may ruin TNA's relationships with Japanese companies and hurt their chances for future World X Cup Tournaments. If Team 3D have so much respect for the sport, then why did they agree to the title change? That situation is not good for anyone really.

D'Angelo Dinero? Julio Dinero must be a little sad. I don't care for the music they played since it sounded like something that Consequences Creed would use. If Elijah Burke is still doing the vampire gimmick, he should probably have Gothic-Industrial entrance music.

Hopefully Styles and Morgan go twice as long for the final bout. I also agree that JB with the hammer was hilarious.

Fun episode overall, though I noticed one little goof involving the "security camera" footage.

There was a spot late in the brawl where Sting was hitting Steiner and he knocked him down next one of the fence barriers. When they switched to the overhead B&W shot it showed Steiner on a table and Sting was nowhere in the picture. Oops.

Kevin, for the record I believe Brother Ray called The British Invasion "tea drinking, krumpet eating fairies!"....Awesome..LOL!!

@ "Bring back the WWWF-
Bravo ! Touche' ! etc. , etc.
Kevin , would you say that was the first time Nietzsche has been qouted on this blog ? ..... other than by youself of course :)

I agree Kevin-the best IMPACT in a long time. It kind of reminded me of a night years ago when on RAW Undertaker and Mick Foley were brawling at ringside and Austin and Kane were atop a Cell that was being raised to the ceiling. That night summed up why WWE ended up finishing off WCW-WWE had an air of unpredictability then that WCW never had.

Really suprised by this entry. I thought it was crazy to instantly unite the World Elite with MEM as we haven't really seen much of the W.E as a standalone group yet. They could potentially just get swallowed up by the MEM and fade into the background, or worse, take on the role of the M.E.M's jobbers.

I get the idea of the brawl and to a degree i liked it but it just went on way too long...and then was pretty repeated at the end of the show. Still, atleast it felt fresh. I guess anything TNA do which shakes things up a bit is a good call.

Also - Poor Kip James. Mr Ass deserves better.
