WWE releases The Brian Kendrick
With the way The Brian Kendrick has been getting buried on TV recently – including jobbing to 59-year-old Jerry Lawler and suffering a loss to Kofi Kingston in a match that lasted about five seconds – it comes as no surprise that he was released by WWE today.
Personally, I think WWE missed the boat with the talented Kendrick. Once his 90-day no-compete clause is up, I wouldn’t expect Kendrick to be out of work for long. Returning to Ring of Honor would surely be an option, but I wouldn’t be surprised if TNA went after him to bolster its X Division.
Kendrick, who has been with WWE off and on since 2003 and had an 11-month WWE tag team title reign with Paul London in 2006-2007, began getting a bit of a push as a singles heel on Smackdown last year.
He was a participant in the WWE Title Championship Scramble at Unforgiven last September and was “interim champion” for about six minutes during the match, but he also was pinned four times. Kendrick also formed a tag team with massive bodyguard Ezekiel Jackson that seemed to be modeled after the Shawn Michaels-Diesel tandem in the 1990s.
Kendrick, as the flamboyant, mouthy little guy who picks fights and then hides behind his huge ally, appeared to be getting over to some degree, but then he seemed to fall out of favor with WWE decision makers and his push gradually decreased to the point that he no longer could be taken seriously.
After he was drafted to Raw a few months ago, it seemed like things might be turning around for him. A story line began in which Kendrick – now separated from Jackson – went searching for a partner to take on WWE tag team champs Carlito and Primo. After a few weeks, however, the angle was abandoned.

Comments
Some reports said that he favored using weed to advancing his wrestling career.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I wrote that he "seemed to fall out of favor with WWE decision makers." I'll let others speculate as to why that was since I have no first-hand knowledge of anything.

i don't get what anyone sees in the guy. He's a toothpick. Rey is small, but at least he has some muscle mass on him.

Kendrick was a great worker, and cut an amazing heel promo. His "The brian Kendrick" gimmick was one of the most entertaining parts of Smackdown for a long time, I really saw mileage wiht him and Ezekiel.
He could have added a lot to Smackdown now, I think if used correctly he could be up there with such break throughs as Dolph Ziggler (lets hope he doesn't suffer the same fate)
I think this is a prime example of WWE needing to start thier cruiserwieght division again...or atleast have put him on ECW. It boggles the mind how when WWE has so few tag teams they break up one of the most compelling...
Looks like TNA could be very well off with new superstars by Christmas

I can't wait to see Kendrick working with the excellent X-Division workers in TNA.
I can already imagine a Kendrick vs. Shelley feud, with both guys talking brilliantly and working superbly together.

To borrow a line from MVP, WWE's philosophy in regard to the A show is "big things popping; little things stopping." The primary function of Raw's midcarders is to fill time until the next segment with HHH, Cena, Orton, or Batista. How many midcarders in recent years have benefited from being assigned to Raw? The Miz has, but no one else comes to mind.

Oh no! Kev, who you gonna mark for now!
Nah, I never liked his character, but you're right he did have too much talent to be jobbing as much as he did. Never mind, I'm sure we'll see him on TNA soon enough.

Do I detect a little disappointment in your own post. Shed the tears and move on!!!!! This could turn out well maybe Cryme Tyme will get more TV time. O Boy. Money Money Yeah Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: chris | July 30, 2009 7:53 PM
Bummer!! Maybe it's for the best, there is nothing harder than watching a guy like him and getting frustrated because he should be doing so much more. If he goes to TNA he'll just get buried over there too, they have no idea what to do with talent like that...or any other talent for that matter.

WWE is stupid to have dropped the ball on him. The kendrick - Jackson thing could have become a great mid card gimmick.
Vince needs to understand that the audience likes watching smaller, athletic guys as opposed to roided up monsters. Also needs to stop looking for the "next big thing" and let things flow and see what happens.

wow in 1 week WWE brings back Masters & releases Kendrick i guess it's just WWE being WWE old habits are hard to drop. Do you really think he will go back to TNA it will be his third time there?
Posted by: frank from dundalk | July 30, 2009 9:02 PM
WWE is officially stupid. Kendrick had all the talent in the world and could have been a very good singles competitor (in the leagues of Kofi Kingston etc) and his unlikely pairing with Jackson had potential.
Unfortunately, despite Kendrick's massive amounts of talent which could make him main event material in other promotions, his size and attitude meant he was never destined to be more than a midcarder.
While I'm not majorly surprised to see him get fired, I'm still really PO'd. He was awesome, and I'll miss him.

I agree, i thought Kendrick could at least have been a top mid carder.
Just to let you know Kev, you have posted the same four paragraphs twice (unless my laptop is playing tricks on me, which is a huge possibilty. If so, my mistake).
RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks for the heads up. Others have alerted me of the repetition as well. It's been fixed.

"Kendrick, as the flamboyant, mouthy little guy who picks fights and then hides behind his huge ally"...sounds familiar doesn’t it. Can one guy but give the storyline line to another guy (Jericho)?

It was actually the WWE Championship not the World Heavyweight title at Unforgiven 2008.
RESPONSE FROM KE: You're right. Thanks.

Unfortunate, but hardly unexpected. Kendrick is a talented guy, but for me things went all wrong once London was released and he made this heel turn. The ugly jacket, awkward dancing, unwarranted self-importance, and weird relationship with Jackson was just...well, weird. Creepy, even.
It might not be all bad, though; TNA is probably actually a better fit for Kendrick. I'm rooting for him, he's fun to watch when he's on his game. I'd like to see TNA reunite Kendrick with London and have them feud with the Motor City Machine Guns.

Kendrick might have promise, but his character sucked. And WWE has proved repeatedly that they would rather dump a talented worker than reboot his character and endanger "continuity."
...Which makes me wonder what's in store for Dolph Ziggler. That guy might have main-event potential, but his character does not.
(And yes, I saw Cornette's column about "character." And I agree with him, but today's wrestling ain't what once was.)

I think it's lame that WWE would allegedly treat marijuana so seriously. There's nothing mentioned about it in the wellness policy that I once read on the corporate site, and that was the specific thing I was looking for. This was before Kendrick's de-push.

I dont see this as a big loss for WWE, but should be a nice gain for TNA or ROH, whichever he decides. I really didnt like his TBK gimmick, especially after he was moved to Raw. In WWE, even with Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston holding the second tier titles, the significance of the titles are so far down that had Kendrick won one of them, it wouldnt have been a big deal. At least in TNA, the X division title still means something, albeit less now because of the Legends title and its subsequent holders (Kevin Nash and Mick Foley, what a joke).

Um...KOFI KINGSTON.

I won't pretend to know anything about non-compete clauses ... but how is it still in effect when WWE released him? I'd understand if he chose to leave WWE or not renew a contract ... but seems odd to me that they can "fire" him, and he can't work for 90 days.
RESPONSE FROM KE: He still gets paid for 90 days.

Yeah. it would appear to be true that Raw is more of the good 'ol boy influenced portion of WWE and is a death sentence for smaller or mid card guys/girls, especially if not a second or third generation SS as they refer to the kids of the old guard wrestlers.
Smackdown would seem to be more designed for these folks in general.

Any rumors or speculation on who Brian Kendrick's "The Partner" was supposed to be?
Posted by: Jason | July 31, 2009 11:18 AM
Brian Kendrick was great, and I liked his gimmick. Even if he did something away from the ring that warranted a release, it's too bad he's no longer in WWE.
Posted by: Jimmy Bellamy | July 31, 2009 12:37 PM
I'm annoyed that someone so athletic and talented can be released. Kendrick could have been a popular superstar if he had the right opponents to face.
I don't understand why the WWE would get rid of Kendrick and bring back someone like Chris Masters (who is not agile or even remotely interesting).
I hope to see THE Brian Kendrick in TNA as he would fit in there with the other high flyers.

Kingston is certainly not lost in the shuffle; I shall concede that much. When he works a program with Cena or one of the other headliners, I shall be convinced.

RE: Christopher
I'm glad you recognize that Kofi is not lost in the shuffle but just because The Miz has worked a program with Cena doesn't mean he's been advanced more than Kofi as a singles star. Kofi has won three titles on Raw, beating the likes of Chris Jericho and MVP. Miz, on the other hand, LOST all of his matches against John Cena. On the mid-card food chain, Kofi is higher than Miz.

I think that the WWE is in serious trouble because TNA is getting hot especially now that the got Big Bobby Lashley. they should stop fire ppl and give them more of a push because Im tired of essing the same ppl compete for the WWE title all the time
Posted by: Mark Mayo | July 31, 2009 7:55 PM
This sucks, last year Kendrick was the hottest thing on smackdown, he was literally the only reason i bothered watching smackdown! Why do WWE bother giving pushes to wrestlers that they are going to fire. WWE is getting beyond a joke at firing the decent talent and keeping the same old superstars at the top ie Cena & Batista when they do the same thing over and over again!!
The only good thing is hopefully Kendrick will go back to TNA and put some life back into the dieing X Divison!

I always wanted to see Kendrick vs. Chavo Guerrero. That way, one of them would finally win a match.
Posted by: Rick from Carney | August 1, 2009 10:57 AM
PWInsider reports that WWE was unhappy with Kendrick's attitude and lack of motivation. They also point out he was the most heavily fined wrestler for marijuana.
If marijuana had anything to do with it, it would be curious they would fire him shortly after bringing back Chris Masters who is close with Rob van Dam who certainly doesn't hide his marijuana use.
It was funny when Michael Cole said Masters never looked better. He should have said Masters has never looked better since he quit using steroids.

Kendrick and London vs. the Motor City Machine Guns needs to happen somewhere. That's a PWG dvd that I would really want to buy.
They could fight the American Wolves, Briscoes, and Steen/Generico in ROH.
There are so many indy wrestling teams they could have unbelievable matches with, but the WWE eventually released them both when they have no one for Jericho and Show to face.
Kendrick and Big Zeke were money...too bad.

I personally think that Brian's cute. I even have a Webkinz lemur named after him. (waits for eggs to be thrown)
