Thoughts on WWE’s Allied Powers DVD

I’ve had a chance to watch a significant portion of the new WWE DVD, Allied Powers: The World’s Greatest Tag Teams, which was released earlier this week.

Overall, I give it a thumbs up. For those who long for the days when tag team wrestling was considered a featured attraction, you’ll probably enjoy this compilation.

Many of the teams you would expect to be on the DVD are profiled, including The Road Warriors (aka The Legion of Doom), The Midnight Express, The Rock and Roll Express, The Fabulous Freebirds and The Dudley Boys. The DVD also takes a look at teams composed of singles stars such as DX (Shawn Michaels and Triple H), The Megapowers (Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage) and The Rock N’ Sock Connection (The Rock and Mick Foley).

There are matches on the DVD from the 1970s to the present day, with WWF/WWE, NWA/WCW, AWA, World Class Championship Wrestling and Championship Wrestling from Florida all represented. Some of the highlights include: The Steiner Brothers vs. Hiroshi Hase and Kensuke Sasake in Japan (1991), The Freebirds vs. Kerry and Kevin Von Erich in a Country Whipping Match (1983), The Midnight Express vs. The Fantastics (1988), The Rockers vs. Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson (1989), Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens vs. Red Bastein and Billy Robinson (1972), Edge and Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz in a TLC Match (2000) and The Rock and Roll Express vs. Ivan Koloff and Krusher Kruschev (1985).

Among the special features are The Freebirds’ "Badstreet, USA" music video, and funny backstage vignettes with The Rock and Foley from 1999 and DX from 2006.

As far as the match selection, I would like to have seen more from the ’70s than just the one AWA match. I also wish WWE would have selected a Road Warriors match from the NWA or AWA instead of the WWF match against Money Inc. The lack of a Midnight Express-Rock and Roll Express match is the most glaring omission, as these teams engaged in perhaps the greatest tag team rivalry ever.

One thing I could have done without was The Miz and John Morrison introducing every segment. Their shtick got old very quickly.

Note: Since we’re on the subject of tag teams, I have put together a list of my top 10 favorite teams of all time, which I will post later today or tomorrow. I encourage everyone to send along their top 10 lists as well. The list should represent your favorite teams, not necessarily who you think were the best or most successful. So if you really loved the Mulkey Brothers or The Conquistadors, by all means include them. Also, only traditional tag teams should be considered. In other words, no teams made up of big-name stars who were only together for a brief period of time.

9. The Wild Samoans
10. The Dudley Boys

Kev - for me its hard to justify purchasing a wrestling related DVD these days when you can go to You-Tube and re-live memories for free . I understand the production value of them stands for something though .
Curious to see how many people rip your list by thinking it not your "personal favorites" , but your rankings . Happens everytime .
Giving my pick early , # 1 favorite team has to go to the Steiner brothers of the '80s.
Come to think of it I'd rate them the best too !
Kev , if you had a least favorite list I think you may know my pick , any team having HB_ . :)

Boy this is a hard list if you asked me this tommorrow I could probably get rid of half the teams on here you should do a 20 list because their were to many teams back from the 70's to early 2000's to compile just 10.

My list is:

4. Dudley Boys/3-D

10. Bruiser Brody & Abdullah The Butcher

Consideration went to Doom, Hart Foundation, E&C ,Hardy Boys, New Age Outlaws, The Outsiders, Justin Credible and Lance Storm, Atlas and Rocky Johnson.

Once last thing, Rock and Roll Express was one of the worst teams in the history of wrestling. I rather watch SD Jones and Shasta Whatley tag up. The double drop kick was horrible.

10. The Outsiders

Wow, when thinking of my top ten tag teams I really started to remember how much talent was in tag team wrestling. And some not so great talent ie: Techno Team 2000, Highway Patrol, Well Dunn to name a few.
I would put my top ten like this:
1. Legion of Doom
2. Steiner Brothers
3. Sky Scrapers (Sid and Dan)
4. Freebirds
5. Brain Busters (Tully and Arn)
6. Hart Foundation
7. DOOM
8. Demolition
9. British Bulldogs
10. Eliminators (Kronus and Saturn)

My all-time favorite Tag-Teams (in order)

1- LOD/Legion of Doom
2-4 Horseman (any combo)
3-The Midnight Express
4-The Steiner Brothers
5-The British Bulldogs
6-The Fabulous Freebirds
7-The Hart Foundation
8- The Rock & Roll Express
9- The Dudley Boys
10-The Fabulous Fargo Brothers

Another great idea that the WWE screws up.

I also have a real hard time paying for some of these DVD's when they continue to recycle the content.

Badstreet video was on Best of World Class.

Also how do you not have an RnR vs. MX match? Easy they weren't WWF wrestlers.

Great idea. Awful execution again.

1. Billy and Chuck
2. Rock and Sock
3. New Aged Outlaws
4. The Bushwackers
5. Edge and Christian
6. The Heartthrobs

4. The Hardy Bros
5. The Dudleys
6. Second City Saints
7. Londrick
8. Steen and Generico
9. LAX
10. Edge and Christian

Kevin-
These aren't the greatest, just my favorites with a comment for each.
1. HARDY BOYZ - Redefined Tag Team Wrestling and made it exciting again.
2. THE HART FOUNDATION - Perhaps one of the greatest heel tag teams ever.
3. TULLY BLANCHARD + ARN ANDERSON - Masters of selling the "Hot Tag"
4. APA - As stiff and real as it gets...Damn!
5. CHRIS BENOIT + KURT ANGLE - Every match they had during their brief run was incredible.
6. THE BRITISH BULLDOGS - See #1.
7.MEAN STREET POSSE - They sold as if they were never trained properly. Hilarious to watch with a great gimmick.
8. THE DUDLEY BOYZ - Love em or hate em they always took the crowd on a great ride. Awesome heel promos in the old ECW.
9. CHAINSAW CHARLIE + CACTUS JACK - Need I say more?
10. EDGE + CHRISTIAN - I never get tired of watching those old TLC matches.

my top ten
01. Arn Anderson & Ole Anderson (Minnesota Wrecking Crew)
02. Road Warriors
03. British Bulldogs
04. Midnight Express (Eaton & Lane). So many finishing moves...WOW!
05. Rock & Roll Express (i hated them, but they were good.)
06. Demolition
07. Harlem Heat
08. Hart Foundation
09. The Dudley Boys (GET THE TABLES!!)
10. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard
(Safe to say that Arn Anderson is the greatest tag team wrestler ever.)

1. Midnight Express (Eaton & Lane)
2. British Bulldogs
3. Foley & the Rock (best comedy duo)
4. Blanchard & Anderson (talked the best game)
5. The Hardy Boys
6. MNM (very underrated)
7. The Beautiful People
8. The Hart Foundation
9. Jerry Brisco & Pat Patterson (2nd best comedy duo)
10. Edge & Christian

First two expanded the repertoire of tag team moves with Cornette making all the difference in my ranking.

Tended to like the teams with chemistry and who knew how to make people laugh, which is sadly underrated.

10 Favorite Teams:

4. Road Warriors
5. Arn and Tully
6. Ted DiBiase and Steve Williams
7. Steiners
8. Fantastics
9. Sgt. Slaughter and Don Kernodle

... and 5 teams that should be stricken from the record:

1. Dynamic Dudes
2. Beverly Brothers
3. Bushwhackers (and there is, in my mind, a clear difference between the Bushwhackers and the New Zealand Sheepherders)
4. M.O.D. Squad

10 Hardy Boys

I have lost some respect for your readers. None of these pencil necked geeks mention Professor Tanaka and Mr Fuji. Strongbow and Whitewolf, The Briscoe Brothers. Tony Garea and Rick Martel, Pedro Morales and Bobo Brazil. Your readers are caught up in the glitz and glare that Vince McMahon has promoted. Anyone who listed the Rock and Roll Express is not a real wrestling fan.

1. The Valiant Brothers
2. Dean Ho & Tony Garea
3. Prof. Toru Tanaka and Mr. Fuji
4. Freebirds
5. Midnight Express
6. Four Horsemen
7. Playboy Buddy Rose & Flamboyant Eric Embry
8. Hardy Boyz
9. Hart Foundation
10. Chief Jay Strongbow & Spiros Arion

(1) The Kolovs (Ivan and Nikita)
(2) Dusty and Nikita (though I don't remember how long they were together)
(3) The Kansas Jayhawks (Dirty Dutch Mantell!)
(4) The Freebirds (with the Freebird Rule that any of the three could defend the titles!)
(5) Arn and Tully
(6) Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkov! Classic villain combo
(7) Road Warriors
(8) Midnight Express (all of them)
(9) Rock N Roll Express
(10) Beer Money (mostly for Robert Roode; he should be in the TNA singles title tier, in my opinion)

1.TOO COOL.

Can't believe MCMG and LAX are barely getting a mention! The only 2 reasons I ever watch TNA!

1) Edge and Christian
2) The Rockers (HBK and Janetty)
3)Hart Foundation (Bret and Jim)
4)British Bulldogs
5)Road Warriors
6)Motor City Machine Guns
7)Hardy Boys
8)Dudley Boys
10)Rock n' Sock

1. Edge & Christian
2. L.O.D.
3. The Hart Foundation
4. Dudley Boyz
5. New Age Outlaws
6. The British Bulldogs
7. Arn & Tully
8. Hardy Boys
9. Steiner Brothers
10. The Outsiders

Not in any particular order...

The Steiner Brothers
The Fabulous Ones
The Road Warriors
Chronic
Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson
Tony Atlas & Rocky Johnson
The Outsiders
The Fabulous Freebirds
The Skyscrapers
Palumbo & O'Hare (final days of WCW)

Tag Teams
1)The Road Warriors
2)Midnight Express
3) The Hart Foundation
4)The Freebirds
5)The Von Erichs
6)Arn & Tully
7Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernoodle
8)Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood
9)Greg gagne & JIm Brunzell
10)Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit

How in the hell can you have a greatest tag team video and not have one match between the Midnight Express and the Rock N Roll Express? Also, out of all the great matches the Road Warriors were in over the years against The Freebirds, Midnight Express, Arn & Tully, Ivan and Nikita Koloff, etc.....the people at WWE pick a match between them and Money INC? WTF was Vince thinking?

My 10 favorite teams

1. Road Warriors
2. Midnight Express
3. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard
4. The Freebirds (Hayes, Gordy, & Roberts)
5. The Eliminators
6. Hart Foundation
7. Steiner Brothers
8. Dudley Boyz
9. New Age Outlaws
10. The Impact Players

In no particular order:

1. Demolition
2. The Brain Busters
3. The Miz and John Morrison
4. Los Guerreros
5. Money, Inc.
6. Edge & Christian
7. Dudley Boyz
8. Steiner Brothers
9. The Varsity Club
10. The APA

My favorites in any order:

The Rock and Roll Express

The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane)

The Road Warriors

The Fabulous Ones

The British Bulldogs

The Fabulous Freebirds

Tony Garea and Rick Martel

Ted DiBiase and Steve "Dr. Death" Williams

The Fantastics

The Hi-Flyers (Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell)

One other note: How this DVD can not have some honor given to Tony Garea, who won WWE world titles with Haystacks Calhoun, Dean Ho, Larry Zybyszko and Martel as partners is totally beyond me.

Then again, Garea is not in the WWE Hall of Fame and I don't understand that either.

1. The Road Warriors
2. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard
3. The Freebirds
4. Team 3D
5. The Rock and Roll Express
6. New Age Outlaws
7. The Russians (Ivan and Nikita Koloff)
8. Acolytes
9. The Midnight Express
10. Beer Money, Inc.

Its really amazing to me how many of the truly best tag teams came through Jim Crocketts office through the years. The Feuds between Midnight, R'n'R, Russians, Tully & Arn, Road Warriors, and Steiners went on for years. There were a few teams in WWF back in the day, but Vince always saw tag team wrestling as a gimmick, I think.

1. Colossal Connection
2. The Machines
3. Mega Bucks
4. The Dream Team
5. Mr. Fuji and Professor Tanaka
6. Owen Hart and Yokozuna
7. Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik
8. Tony Garea and Rick Martel
9. The Fabulous Rougeaus
10. Strike Force

1. Road Warriors
2. Midnight Express- Condrey/eaton
3. British Bulldogs
4. Steiner Brothers
5. Eliminators
6. Hardys
7. Ivan and Nikita Koloff
8. Minnesota Wrecking Crew - Arn and Ole Anderson
9. Freebirds
10. Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff

My top 10 will be

1)Edge and Christian

2)The Rockers (HBK and Marty)

3)Hart Foundation (Bret and Jim)

4)British Bulldogs (Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid)

5)Funk Brothers

6)World's greatest tag team(Shelton and Charlie)

7)Motor City Machine Guns

8)Los Guerreros (Eddie and Chavo)

9)Rock n' Sock connection (Rock and Foley)

10)Hardy Boys

May favorite 10 tag teams from over the years (and this follows your guidelines of ones I personally enjoyed, not the "best" of all time):

1. Road Warriors
2. British Bulldogs
3. Hart Fouhdation (Brett and Jim)
4. New Age Outlaws
5. Edge and Christian
6. Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito
7. Rock and Roll Express
8. Midnight Express
9. Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo
10. The New Zeland Sheepherders (before they were cartooned into the Bushwackers)

1. The Road Warriors
2. The Midnight Express (Eaton & Lane)
3. Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson
4. The Steiner Brothers
5. The British Bulldogs
6. The Hollywood Blondes
7. Steve Williams & Terry Gordy
8. The Powers of Pain
9. Harlem Heat
10. DOOM

What - no one has any love for the Valient bros. ?

I've only watched a few ROH shows, but there's not doubt that tag team wrestling is treated as a featured attraction for them, especially when the Briscoes are involved.

1. The Hardy Boyz (Matt was the science and Jeff was the art. You put the two together and its a masterpiece)
2. The Hart Foundation
3. Demolition
4. Edge & Christian
5. The Killer Bees
6. The British Bulldogs
7. Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine
8. Money Incorporated (Dibiase/IRS)
9. The Dudley Boyz
10. Legion of Doom

Can I get an "honourable mention" for the Quebecers on music alone? :)

1. Midnight Express
2. Arn & Tully
3. Davey Boy & Dynamite Kid
4. Rock & Roll Express
5. Road Warriors
6. Edge & Christian
7. Dudleys
8. APA
9. Funk Brothers
10. Valiant Brothers

1. Freebirds
2. Road Warriors
3. Tony Garea & Rick Martel
4. Mr. Fuji & Mr. Sato
5. Wild Samoans
6 Ric Flair & Batista
7. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard

10. British Bulldogs

Top Ten Tag Teams

1)Freebirds

10) New Age Outlaws

Top Ten Tag Teams

1. The Assassins

5. Doctor Death Steve Williams & Terry Gordy
6. The Steiner Brothers
7. DOOM (Reed & Simmons)
8. Hart Foundation
9. The Road Warriors
10. Demolition (Ax & Smash)

Hey Kevin-

Do you remember High Energy from the early 90s. It was Owen Hart and Koko B. Ware. I don't think they were teamed together very long, but they were a favorite of mine. Maybe you could do a top ten most obscure tag teams that had recognizable individuals list to go along with the greatest.

1. Hart Foundation
2. British Bulldogs
3. Fabulous Rougeau Brothers
4. Rockers
5. Twin Towers
6. Money Inc.
7. Edge & Christian
8. Brain Busters
9. Demolition
10. New Age Outlaws

My Top 10

1. The Rock and Roll Express
2. Demolition
3. The Hart Foundation
4. The Outsiders
5. The New Age Outlaws
6. The Steineer Brothers
7. The Road Warriors
8. The Midnight Express (Hated these guys because I was a R&R Express fan but they were awesome)
9. The Freebirds
10. Beer Money ( The best Tag Team right now in any company)

How about some love for heels Jimmy and Johnny Valiant, "The Valiant Brothers", who held the title for over a year at one time back in the 70's I believe?

God, I hated those guys!! They were the prototype heel wrestling tag team that I an remember.

1. Hart Foundation
2. Edge and Christian
3. New Age Outlaws
4. Hardy Boyz
5. Legion of Doom
6. Rockers
7. Steiners
8. Impact Players
9. Miz & Morrisson
10. Dudley Boys

How is it that every list leaves off Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda? When their music of "Born in the USA" would start up I would get chills....They have to rank up there as one of the best ever tag team combinations....

Now that I think about it,I regret not including the "East-West Connection",Jesse the Body Ventura and Adrian Adonis.Yes these were guys who had successful solo careers but they got their best heat as a tag team, before Jesse became Color announcer and later politician. And of course,Adonis was one hell of a wrestler before he had a huge weight gain and apparently made Vince mad and was "buried" with a homosexual angle. Then soon of course,he was literally buried. But man,he was talented,a big man with both power moves and speed, and a Yankees jacket that would get instant heat in almost any town.RIP Keith.

My top ten

1) Brothers of destruction (taker and kane)

2)DX

3)Hart Foundation

4)Demolition

5)Apocalytes

6)hArdys

7)edge and christian

8)the outlaws (nash and hall)

9)the mega powers

10)the rockers

Dear luhrm you obviously never saw the beverly Brothers when they where in the AWA as the Destruction Crew with Lucious Johnny V. as their manager they where great before it folded.

here is another top 10:

1. Steiner Brothers
2. Hollywood blondes
3. Sheepherders
4. Freebirds
5. Doom
6 Brain Busters
7. Demilition
8. SST
9 Impact Players
10 XXX

Frank - I do remember seeing them vaguely, but not in any great detail. They might have been a good team, but it could easily be another Sheepherders / Bushwhackers situation where one gimmick fits like a glove, and the other sends me reaching for the remote.

To Brian: Sting was apart of The Blade Runners. His tag team partner was named Rock who is most commonly known as the Ultimate Warrior.

The collection of talent Bill Watts had in the Mid-South/UWF territory in the mid 80's was unbelievable.

wow can't believe all the love for the new age Outlaws dont understand it. because i enjoy wrestling more than mic skills but anyway here is another top 10:

1 Kronik
2 bad Company
3 Von Erichs
4 Koloffs

I also would have to disagree with anyone who thinks Vince never cared about tag team wrestling just look at the fact he made Demilition to try to duplicate the success of the Road Warriors couple that with his 80's roster of them, the Harts, Bulldogs, bees, Rougeaus, Rockers, islanders, Sheik & Volkoff,Nasty's, Steiners, LOD, Brain Busters, Strikeforce/Can-An Connection, Valentine & Beefcake and I could keep going on it just seemed after the Steriod trial he lost interest.
