Night of Champions preview
Predictions for tonight’s WWE pay-per-view:
WWE champion Randy Orton vs. John Cena vs. Triple H: I would love to see Orton’s reign continue, but I have a feeling that Cena is going to end it. I might be reading too much into it, but Triple H said on Raw Monday that his main goal in this match is to make sure that Orton didn’t retain the championship. I’m guessing that Cena wins the title and then faces Triple H at SummerSlam.
World heavyweight champion CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy: Punk is the most compelling performer in the business right now, and with Hardy’s contract expiring at the end of the month, it seems like a no-brainer that Punk will retain the title. However, it has been reported that Hardy is expected to stick around for another month and will make his final appearance at SummerSlam on Aug. 23, so I think that he will win the title tonight and then lose it back to Punk in a gimmick match at SummerSlam.
Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler: Ziggler has been on a roll and seems destined for a top-tier spot on Smackdown, so it wouldn’t make sense to stall his momentum with a loss here. Winning the title from Mysterio will increase his legitimacy.
U.S. champion Kofi Kingston vs. The Big Show vs. Carlito vs. The Miz vs. MVP vs. Jack Swagger: My first instinct was to go with The Big Show, but then I thought about it a little more. I have to believe that The Miz impressed WWE brass with his performance during his program with John Cena, and I think the U.S. title is going to be his reward. Plus, it seems pretty obvious that he and Maryse are going to be paired together, and she said that she wouldn’t give him a second thought until he did something impressive. Winning the U.S. title in a six-pack challenge would be impressive.
Unified WWE tag team champions Chris Jericho and a mystery partner vs. Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes: I feel confident that Jericho and his partner will emerge victorious. The question is: Who will Jericho’s partner be? My first thought was Dolph Ziggler, but if he wins the Intercontinental title, I’m not sure WWE would put two championships on him simultaneously. The only other guys I could see getting the spot are Christian, Jack Swagger and perhaps CM Punk, who is doing a self-righteous gimmick that is similar to Jericho’s.
ECW champion Tommy Dreamer vs. Christian: Since the show is in Philadelphia, it wouldn’t shock me if Dreamer retained the title, but I’m going with Christian. It’s time to get the belt back on someone with a little more credibility.
Divas champion Maryse vs. Mickie James: With Maryse getting the better of Mickie on TV recently, it would be logical to assume that the title will change hands. As much as I like Mickie, however, taking the belt off Maryse would be a mistake. I think Maryse retains the title, perhaps with an assist from The Miz.
WWE women’s champion Michelle McCool vs. Melina: I don’t see McCool losing the title.

Comments
I'm so torn on the Jericho match. I feel like it'd be interesting to see if Christian somehow lost the ECW title match and then join Jericho to grab the tag straps, but I think he still has some mileage as a face. Plus there is the conflict of thinking everything Jericho is associated with is great, but every big reveal in the WWE seems so anti-climatic lately.
Michelle McCool, proving that not even having a title can make everyone at least somewhat intriguing. Watching her matches makes me feel a lot less sympathy for Taker having to get his "Sarah" tattoo laser removed from his neck (which is supposed to be the most painful place to get one) and that comes from a huge mark of his.

This morning Chris Jericho had this to say on twitter:
"IAmJericho I'm not gonna say who my partner is going to be tomorrow....but he is EVIL...."
Obviously he's hinting at a partnership with a returning Undertaker, is there any chance he's telling the truth? That could be interesting...
RESPONSE FROM KE: I saw it. I think Jericho is trying to swerve us. I can't believe he would give any kind of real hint.

you say that dreamer doesn't give credibility to the ECW championship and then you say that it's a mistake to take the belt off maryse? dreamer may be slow, but he has a whole career and he knows how to wrestle.
also i think that ziggler is going to lose to rey after pushing him to the limit, but is going to appear later and win the unified tag titles with Y2J. that way his momentum won't be killed. although the wwe has recently become an expert on killing momentum...
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'd rather watch a bad Maryse match than a good Dreamer match. But that's just me.

What is the odds that Cody Rhodes turning on Ted DiBiase in the same manner that he turned on Hardcore Holly?

Hey kev whats the chances of jericho's mystery partner being kane ?
Posted by: Joe | July 26, 2009 5:13 AM
My fear is that they pair Kane with Jericho.
Posted by: Quin | July 26, 2009 8:33 AM
Gosh, Kev......I hope you're wrong about a Cena/HHH title match at Summerslam. Any combination of Orton/HHH/Cena is a worn out story. I also wonder if Jericho would bring in someone to help give them a push. Christian, Swagger, and Punk can pretty much take care of themselves. Perhaps Jericho will pick a young guy to carry for a little while.

I can't see Vince putting the belt on Hardy. After the incidents with Brett Hart and Alundra Blaze I think that Vice will not take that chance.
Posted by: Bob Kordecki | July 26, 2009 10:48 AM
I do not think we need to worry about Kane and Jericho teaming up because I doubt Kane will ever forget the whole coffee incident a couple years back. (though I like Kane and I would like to see this) Perhaps, the Boogey man is returning , now that would be terrible. I doubt it will be Undertaker because it would make no sense to have him as a heel.
I think the most intriguing possibility is Christian. Obviously Jericho and Edge will be fueding when Edge returns, and I think throwing Christian in there as a wild card would make for great tv.

I would love to see Jericho team with Shelton Benjamin, who has proven that he can hold his own as a performer and a champion, having won U.S., Intercontinental and Tag Team titles.
Posted by: CEEdub | July 26, 2009 11:01 AM
It makes sense for The Miz to win the U.S. title for the reasons listed, and it's also true that Ziggler probably won't be Jericho's partner if he beats Rey, since that they rarely give somebody more than one belt at a time. (Particularly if the guy already has TWO belts to carry around if he's a tag team champ; it'd look a little silly if he came out wearing one tag belt around his waist, the other over his shoulder/in his hand, and the IC or U.S. title over his other shoulder or in his other hand.)
Which sucks, because I thought that The Miz and Jericho would make a good team. Would anybody be expecting it after the Twitter feud?
My fear is that they pair Kane with Jericho.
That would also suck. Kane's definitely paid his dues and continues to, and to be fair there ARE worse wrestlers, but I'd rather see Jericho team up with somebody who was more exciting to watch.

Kev - Given that Shawn Michaels' return looks like it is going to coincide with a DX reunion (according to UK tour promo material) do you think that perhaps HHH will be kept out of the title picture this time around, especially if Michaels is back fro Summerslam?

Hey Kev, I found this really good and rare interview on dailymotion of the Undertaker back from 2002 on Off The Record. He goes into detail of his career in WWE, the Hell in the Cell match with Foley, telling HBK to do the "job", and issues with Big Show. It's definitely worth the watch!

RESPONSE FROM KE: I have seen it before and you're right, it's a great interview.
Posted by: Erik | July 26, 2009 11:27 AM
I'm inclined to agree that Cena will win the title.
If he does methinks Triple H will turn on him either right after the match or on RAW tomorrow. I think his more humorous persona of the past couple of weeks is a prelude to a heel turn. Triple H has been a face for three years plus.
Of course, if that does come to pass where would it leave Orton?

I took that as hint at Kane, as in "See No Evil," the movie in which Kane starred.

I was going to make a comment a couple of days ago stating that the dark figure next to Jericho in the WWE looked a lot like Kane's silhouette, by then I guessed I was imagining things. But than he makes that statemente again on tweeter and my suspicions came back again. But as Kane is supposed to be starting a new feud with the Great Kahli, I think they're really just playing with us.
My guess is they'll put anyone with Jericho and let him drop the tittles back to Rhodes and DiBiase so they can start working DiBiase's babyface turn with the titles on them, like we've seen so many times before.

Does anyone know when Chris Masters will return? Is it possible for him to be the mystery partner?
Posted by: Stan | July 26, 2009 1:41 PM
The most intriguing match of the night is the tag title match. I really can't wait to find out who Jericho picks as a partner. Whoever he picks will be instanly elevated. I'm pulling for Swagger, but either Rhodes or DiBiase would be intresting as well. But the fact that Jericho hinted toward it maybe being Orton on RAW Mon. has me thinking.
I belive that the original plan was to have Edge and Jericho feud with DX when Michales returns. Since Edge's injury shot that down in flames they may want another established star to have a super-feud with DX.
Imagine, Orton retains the Heavyweight title tonight and wins tag team gold with Jericho, then the plan goes into motion to get Jericho the World title. Could you imagine Jericho and Orton walking to the ring with 4 title belts between the two of them. They would be unbareable...and unstopable.
If that happens then Jeff Hardy will win the World title tonight, because Punk vs. Jericho doesn't make much sense at this point.
I hope Hardy doesn't win if he is leaving. I would much rather see a nice long title reign for Punk.
I'm excited for tonight, I just hope bad booking doesn't ruin it

YIKES!! Undertaker? No way...
But thinking throughly, Jericho did talked with Kane a bit in SD, possibly hinting that he was going to join him. Then again, they may have been talking about Mr. Deadman himself...
I don't see that bad. Jericho vs. Undertaker at Wrestlemania, anyone?

I think that Dreamer would be a more valid ECW champ if they had decided that after he won the title to do an angle where Dreamer played up on being an ECW original and would only defend the title in extreme rules matches.
Posted by: Fletch | July 26, 2009 2:05 PM
are you joking kev this version of ecw is a joke dreamer is as legit as can be watch his old stuff yes he is older but he has talent does he need a belt no but def has cred btw did you got to the dragon gate show
RESPONSE FROM KE: I wouldn't say this version of ECW is a joke. It's WWE's "C" show and it just happens to be called ECW. It could just as easily be called Heat or Velocity or Jakked or any other name WWE has given to its lesser shows in the past.
As for Dreamer, I have seen his stuff in the old ECW. I respect what he put his body though and I enjoyed a number of his matches. But, to me, he just doesn't have the "it" factor to hold a belt in WWE, especially now that he is past hi prime. If you remember, Dreamer only had one reign as ECW champ in the original ECW, and it lasted for about a minute.

I hate to say it but the way WWE has been going I really think Jericho will team with Kane. It's a horrible idea but WWE always choose the worst options when given choices like these.
Cena absolutely will win then feud with HHH (yawn). Orton will probably be left trying to preserve Legacy with the upcoming Cody/Ted feud.

ORIGNAL ECW = Tommy Dreamer. He will hold the belt !!!!!! Sorry Kevin!!!!!!!
Posted by: Chris | July 26, 2009 3:54 PM
Kevin, do you think there's any chance Jericho's partner could be Shawn Michaels? I think that would be interesting. When's HBK supposed to return anyway?
Posted by: Brian | July 26, 2009 4:27 PM
I am picking HBK as Y2J's partner. I think the only title changes will be U.S. and ECW.
Anyway, as much as I enjoy your blog, I do like Cryme Tyme. Their matches are interesting and while some of their promos are drawn out, they are entertaining. I can't stand Kendrick (the guy is not entertaining) and I'm glad Vickie G. is off TV. But I guess that's what makes it interesting, differences of opinion.
Posted by: Eric | July 26, 2009 5:11 PM
I agree with Joe and Quin: I think Jericho's partner will be Kane. After Khali turned down Jericho's proposal to be his partner, Chris had a smirk on his face that meant to me "OK, big guy, then I'm gonna team with your worst enemy".
Posted by: Axl | July 26, 2009 5:40 PM
My call is still Triple H winning the championship tonight --- I'd say since his birthday is tomorrow (his 40th), that's his gift tonight from his "family". If not, I really hope Cena wins the match.
I also think Jeff Hardy will beat Punk - I think the WWE might feel if they give him the belt, it will keep him around for awhile and make him rethink leaving.
I can't picture the Undertaker teaming with Jericho - I'd probably go more with Kane or maybe Orton --- Can't see Rhodes at this point, since he and Dibiase are wrestling Jericho and his partner.
The rest of the matches I really don't care about, although I wouldn't mind Michelle McCool losing to Melina. That's all my thoughts for now.
P.S. Kev, any idea when Shaune Michaels is returning?? I really miss him.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Shawn Michaels is rumored to be returning for SummerSlam next month.
Posted by: Jeannette | July 26, 2009 7:33 PM
I hope Jericho's pick is Shawn Michaels. That would just be mega awesome. What makes me sad is that Legacy is obviously not going to win the match. Having Jericho and his mystery partner lose would be a TNA thing to do.
Other TNA-type things that could happen tonight:
1) Cena and Orton form an alliance in which Cena helps Orton win and becomes a part of Legacy.
2) CM Punk reveals a secret adviser: Ronald Reagan. Think of it: the man who coined the phrase "Just Say No" in the corner of the Straight Edge Superstar. Now, since Ronnie is dead, WWE would have to hire an wrestler to play him. I'm going with the guy who played Salvatore Sincere in the 90's.
3. The Six Pack Challenge becomes a Six Pack on a Pole Match, with the guy grabbing the Six Pack winning the title. No, no, the guy who grabs the Six Pack gets to use it as a weapon. No, no, the guy who grabs the Six Pack has to drink each beer and then can use it as a weapon. No, no, the first guy who.....
4. Jenna Morasca interferes during one of the women's matches.
