Edge’s injury: What now?
I’m assuming that most people reading this already know by now that the injury Edge suffered at a WWE house show Friday night in San Diego was a serious one. According to pwinsider.com, Edge has a torn Achilles tendon, which could keep him out of the ring until early next year.
Obviously, losing one of the best all-around performers in the business for a significant length of time is horrible news for WWE. Edge joins Batista, The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels on the list of Hall of Fame-caliber WWE stars who are either injured or on hiatus.
What makes the situation even more troubling – specifically for Smackdown – is that Jeff Hardy’s departure from WWE could be imminent. Hardy recently said in an interview with a TV network in Spain that he has a few weeks remaining on his contract and still hasn’t decided if he is going to renew it.
WWE also has to figure out what to do with the unified tag team title, which was won by the dream team of Edge and Chris Jericho last Sunday at The Bash pay-per-view. I wouldn’t be surprised if the belts were put up for grabs in a tournament (which could play out on Raw, Smackdown and ECW), with the final match taking place at The Night of Champions pay-per-view on July 26. Legacy (Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes) and The Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith) would be the favorites to win it, unless WWE wanted to put two top singles wrestlers together like it did with Edge and Jericho.
Another possible scenario is that Jericho is allowed to choose a replacement for Edge. That would present an opportunity for WWE to elevate someone by giving them the rub of teaming with Jericho. One guy immediately comes to mind – Dolph Ziggler. Then again, how fitting would it be if the man Jericho selected to take Edge’s spot was Christian? Jericho and Christian have a history and they would be great together, but it probably wouldn’t happen. It looks to me as if Christian is going to be getting the ECW title back soon.

Comments
It it time for Jericho to take over; he is more talented than Edge. I doubt it will be Christian; Vince doesn't want Smackdown doing better than Raw, and putting him in this profile raises fan interest. They will probably vacate the belts and have a tournament for them.

That's a bad hit for Edge as well as WWE/Smackdown. Kevin, what is the status of Undertaker and Shawn Michaels? They've been out since WrestleMania. WWE needs at least one heel to step up. A good opportunity for some young talent to get their shot.

That Sucks! I was so looking forward to seeing Edge when the house show came to my town in August. Suck!

And I was really enjoying the subtle babyface tendencies he was displaying, and thought it was leading to a turn and feud with Jericho. Ah well. So it goes.

How about Jericho losing the title, and then feuding with Hardy a bit afterward? Adding to the storyline on Hardy being reckless, Jericho could blame Hardy for injuring Edge and thus making Jericho lose his title. It would be a high profile feud to keep Hardy in while he decides whether or not he wants to resign.

Maybe Edge in a wheelchair, similar to Bret Hart from years ago. Jericho could defend the belts 2 on 1, and Edge could interfere somehow from the chair. May need a Diva to wheel him around. Here's a vote for the return of Lita!

Hopefully, The Undertaker will come back soon in order to plug the hole.
I wish Edge a speedy recovery.

Well, if Jeff would just re-up it could be another Hardy Boys Tag Title run. You know brothers have spats then it's over and they are strong together against anyone going after them, together or separately.

My wife and I got front row seats for the August 8th Smackdown at the Nassau Coliseum.
It is our first show and my wife's favorite wrestlers are Edge and Hardy, Needless to say I am so disappointed for her and Edge.
I spent quite a bit of money on those tickets and the show will not be the same without Edge and the threat of Hardy being gone is even worse.
FML.

I wonder if they are really starting to regret letting Kennedy go at this point.

Great idea concerning the Christian selection. Soory to see Edge having to be out. WWE is not creative enough to choose Christian though. Love to see the Hart Dynasty get the belt.

Torn Achilles is such a horrible injury, it's so hard not to put stress on it and re-injure it during the recovery period.
That said he'll probably be able to hobble around in the leg cast after a few weeks - if they want to put him in a non-wrestling role for awhile - at least he'd be able to perform - interim GM?
He could give himself the belt in a chair and be unwilling to defend it for a few months, hehe...
Anyway, I hope he recovers well rather than fast. Starting too soon on a messed up Achilles will have him back out in short order...
I agree, great opportunity for the likes of Dolph Ziggler and the Hart Dynasty to fill in the heel void on SD

Kevin,
I just got home from an autograph session out here on Pearl Harbor. Christian was one of the superstars at the signing, and I asked whether Edge had broken his ankle or torn his achilles. He confirmed that he had torn his achilles. So, I guess he won't be back until around the Royal Rumble. Sucks, but it could also give Edge alot of hype and push upon his return leading into Wrestlemania, I suppose.
I also imagine he might go back to wearing regular wrestling boots when he returns instead of the shin guard over the tennis shoes look that he's been donning. The boots will give him more stability for his heel/ankle area.

Does Ricky Steamboat want to wrestle some more? Imagine forcing Jericho and Steamboat together.
If Hardy wants to come back, I bet he's glad he waited a bit before signing. He is bound to get offered some more money as a result of Edge's injury.

Too bad for Edge. But it might be a blessing in disguise. When he does return it would make sense for him to come back as a face as they have done in the past with Triple H and Kurt Angle when they were out with significant injuries for prolonged periods.
As I've said here before Edge has been a heel since 2004. A face turn is long overdue and will certainly be in order whenever he is ready to return.

Putting the titles up in a tourney is great for Jericho's character. He can complain about the conspiracy against him some more, bitch about not being allowed to select a partner, etc.
That said, the finals should come to him and a partner of his choosing, with Jericho putting over whomever wins the titles...

I like the Christian idea. I'd just assume Ziggler went the way of the rest of the Spirit Squad. All of those guys will always be a poor man's Mean Street Posse to me.
Really tough news though since Edge is an amazing worker. Kind of cements a face turn when he returns though huh?

I've never been a big Edge guy, but was enjoying the beginnings of what looked like a face turn, so this is disappointing. My idea of how they (should) handle the situation:
Jericho continues as champion, with Edge at ringside. Jericho defends the belts in handicap matches with "assistance" from Edge. Edge's conscious starts gnawing away at the "cheap" way they're retaining the belts, leading to a gradual face turn and feud with Jericho. The two finally agree to settle it at WrestleMania; each will choose a partner and the winners get the belts. Edge chooses Christian, Jericho chooses Jeff Hardy, in a surprise heel turn. Regardless of who wins, the tag titles gain instant credibility, something they've lacked for some time now.

hi.
In relation to this, would anybody know if Edge will come to Manila, Philippines this friday? It's really a bad news for me, I bought a ringside ticket just to see Edge, and a week before their house show here, this news broke.
Posted by: mijiata | July 6, 2009 2:02 AM
Sad to hear about his injury. Would be a blessing in disguise. His absence will not hurt his popularity, in fact it will icrease it further. Edge returning as face will be cool.

Michael in Virginia, you're a genius!
Posted by: rob the barber | July 6, 2009 7:58 AM
Batista in the Hall of Fame? Ugh.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Batista has been one of the biggest stars in wrestling over the past five years. It's about being a star not about how good a technical wrestler someone is.
Posted by: Danny D | July 6, 2009 10:20 AM
I like Michael in Virginia's idea. It's not going to happen (the WWE isn't that creative), but it'd be a great angle, for sure.
Posted by: Michelle | July 6, 2009 11:45 AM
If they can convince Jeff to stay...your new Unified Tag Team champions will be...
C.M. Punk & Jeff Hardy
Yeah, I know its old and played to put two guys that hate each other as the tag champions, but they can use the same angle they used with Matt and MVP and get Punk some additional heat by constantly trying to show up Hardy in tag matches. Besides, its not like the tag team titles are there to get real tag teams over, right?

I like the idea of Edge becoming Raw's GM. Can you imagine him coming out in a wheelchair screaming "Excuse me"?
Posted by: Adam from Minneapolis | July 6, 2009 12:57 PM
Let Christian fill in for Edge.
How about a story line where Christian announces Edge's injury and says Edge approached him to keep an eye on things for him on Smackdown while out because he doesn't trust anyone else. Then, when Edge returns, it turn's out that Christian really just made this up in order to weasel in on Edge's turf and then they feud leading up to a Wrestlemania feature match next year.

Hey kev,
Hope Edge gts well soon.Isn't it funny that , most fans who are looking forward to a face turn from Edge are dying to see a Heel cena !! I personally was hoping for a double turn at wrestlemania , but it all went downhill when big show came in :( . Btw kevin do u think a face edge vs a heel cena can work b at wrestlemania 26 ?? provided both their turns are done well and also given cena's kiddy fan base
cheers

I can definitely see Edge making his return at the '10 Rumble as a huge face. I know he probably prefers to be a heel, but at this stage of his career, the die hard fans love him, heel or face. It's similar to the situation with Michaels and UT. I can see Edge coming back to either win the '10 Rumble match - something I don't think he has ever done.

Edge looked pretty good on monday night raw, are you sure he was hurt
RESPONSE FROM KE: Raw is not live this week. It was taped before the injury.

If he has an achilles rupture why is he working this RAW show tonight ?
Pretty hardcore.

Ooopss, nevermind my post. Just read that RAW was pretaped this week.
Sorry

I think Vince will be throwing a boat load of money Jeff Hardy's way to get him to stick around.
Wouldn't it be great if Jeff convinced Vince he'll stick around a little longer witout a contract. Then they put the belt on Jeff and then he jumps ship and show's up on Impact with the World title, just like Flair did in 91.
Wishful thinking, I know. The way to go would be a tournement for the tag belts. It would be a great way to establish some new teams. I don't know if they have some teams waiting to come up from FCW or not, or they could pair up any combonation of guys who they aren't doing anything with right now and have them make a suprise run and win the titles.

No, Edge has never won the '10 Royal Rumble. :) lol

Chalk me as one long-time fan who would rather see Edge stay heel and Cena stay face. Don't fix what ain't broke.

I suppose Jericho could draft in a replacement for Edge and Christian would be an excellent choice as it would get him away from ECW (where he is wasted) and onto the main shows.
Alternatively, if Raw has guest hosts, can't Jericho have guest partners each week?!
Of more concern is the impact Edge's injury will have on the main event scene. With Michaels and Taker out on sabbatical, Batista and Edge injured and Hardy set to leave (though he may just be squeezing as much £ as possible out of the WWE, and who can blame him with insane stunts he puts his body through), that leaves Orton, HHH, Cena, CM Punk (arguable) and, erm......
Jericho and Mysterio are proficient performers but there is just this feeling that they are not quite in that 'top' bracket.
If I see Kane and Big Show anywhere near a main event I'll scream.
WWE needs to elevate new top line talent now. That said, Id like to see Michaels return in time for 'one final' title shot at Survivor Series where he wins the belt and keeps it til Mania (a fitting reward if it is to be his last appearance at mania 26) where he drops it to his heir apparent, John Morrison in what would, in all likelihood be a belter.

Legacy vs Edge/Jericho has already been announced for Night of Champions, so the most likely scenario is Legacy taking Edge out backstage, Jericho having to face them 2-on-1 and Legacy winning the belts. This is the most boring re-hashed scenario imaginable, so I'm sure it's the one WWE will use.
But what I'd LIKE to see is Carlito taking Edge out, planting the seed for a future Edge face turn while cementing Carlito's heel turn. Carlito then demands to be Jericho's tag partner in the match vs. Legacy, saying he wants to partner with a proven winner since Primo can't cut it. During the match, Primo comes out and causes Carlito to be pinned and Legacy wins the tag belts. This adds more fuel to the Carlito/Primo feud while protecting Jericho, and sets up an Edge/Carlito program for the future when Edge returns for revenge as a babyface.

Mad props to Andrew K. I like that scenario. Anything to help get Carlito a real push.

@David Marjoram
We can dream. :)

In my opinion, showing up at Night of Champions, being jerichos partner and helping him retain would be the perfect way for the recently signed chris masters to return.
