Big wins for Shelton Benjamin, Vladimir Kozlov on ECW
ECW champion Tommy Dreamer and No. 1 contender Christian both suffered losses on Tuesday night’s episode of ECW. That’s doesn’t really make me excited to see the Dreamer-Christian title match at the Night of Champions pay-per-view on July 26. Then again, I wasn’t all that excited to see it in the first place.
However, with Shelton Benjamin defeating Christian, and Vladimir Kozlov beating Dreamer, I wouldn’t be surprised if the ECW title match at NOC ends up being a fatal four-way. Now that I would be interested in seeing, mostly because of Benjamin being in the mix.
Other thoughts on Tuesday’s show:
The Benjamin-Christian match was good, and it was a pleasant surprise when Benjamin won. That’s how Benjamin should be booked. …
When Kozlov did commentary on the Benjamin-Christian match, he was so bad that he was good. When Dreamer did commentary last week, he was just so bad. …
ECW general manager Tiffany told Tyler Reks that he was doing a “great job” on WWE Superstars. Actually, he’s done two jobs on that show, but I don’t know how great they were. …
As Matt Striker noted on commentary, the crowd seems to have taken to Yoshi Tatsu rather quickly. Perhaps that quick win over Benjamin wasn’t such a bad booking decision after all. ….
Tatsu and Paul Birchill did a nice job of improvising after Tatsu slipped off the ropes. It was obvious that the slip wasn’t supposed to happen, but Birchill didn’t hesitate as he scooped up Tatsu and delivered a suplex for a near fall. …
There was no Abraham Washington segment this week. That’s the good news. Now, the bad news: There will be one on next week’s show.

Comments
I usually change the channel or FF on my DVR during a Birchill match, but I must say, he adapted well to the slip off the ropes. Very professional.
"The Zack Attack" is a terrible name for a finishing move. The half-tights are terrible as well.
I thought for sure that Reks debuted on ECW the week of the 15 man Draft.

You forgot to talk about Sheamus's match Kevin!

Not a regular viewer of ECW but was very impressed by the Benjamin/Christian match. Very impressive high impact moves combined with traditional wrestling works like when Benjamin was working over Christian's left arm. Didn't really see what the hype was about with Tatsu but Birchill did a great job covering for him.

2 weeks, no Regal. I don't get it.

Hey Kevin,
Will you do a blog on Brock Lesnar's recent win over Frank Mir and of course, Brock's actions after the fight? If you are into UFC, and if you think it is appropriate for this blog, I'd be curious about your thoughts.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I wasn't going to, but a few people have asked me about it, so I probably will.

I noticed the ad libbing Burchill did after Yoshi's slip. That's why it's important to have guys like Burchill on the roster even if you aren't going to give them a push. It gives the pushed guys a chance to have a decent match and their experience can compensate for a mistake or two. WWE, don't "future endeavor" all the non stars.
I have to disagree with Matt Striker. ZZ Top did not write "Legs" with Tiffany in mind. She was born one year after the song was released.

Thanks to Striker I can't get Zack Ryder's stupid music out of my head. Despite that fact I thought the match he had with Goldust was pretty good. I would like to see Goldie have one more run as just plain old Dustin Rhodes. I think he deserves it. Hell if they can put the belt on Dreamer...
I hope last night was the start of a nice long Christian/Benjamin program.
What do you think of Sheamus, Eck?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm on the fence right now about Sheamus. He hasn't made a strong impression, either good or bad.

For my money, Burchill is one of the most underrated performers in the business. There's nothing flashy about him,and he doesn't really have any star quality, but he's a damn solid worker who surprises me every time I watch him. I forget how good he is since he's so rarely on TV.
I think Sheamus has a lot of promise. Not sure if he's ready for the big time (probably why h's only had a couple of squash matches), but if they develop him right, he could be big. He's gotta do a program with Finlay at some point, don't you think?

You'll likely see this when Vince cuts Rhodes from the roster and he then signs with TNA.

Dreamer was good on commentary, putting over both Kozlov and Christian. But then again, being that he was an ECW guy and not a WCW guy I understand why you didn't like it. What can you say though? There's a reason why Vince brought back ECW rather than WCW. Even though WCW had the bigger stage, more money, and bigger names, ECW gets brought back. Better fans, and wrestlers who did it for the love of wrestling. Granted WCW did wind up stealing ECW guys when Bischoff realized ECW stars were more popular in their company than a lot of WCW guys were, so why not take successful wrestlers who were getting over in ECW? Lets face it, the obvious rank, if you look at it in depth would have been WWF, ECW, then WCW. In fact, ECW could have been first on that list because WWF had to steal wrestlers as well, such as Taz and the Dudley Boyz, and WCW, well, would still be last. Why was ECW so successful? In large part of Dreamer. What now?
Other than your anti-ECW comments, awesome blog as usual. As well as your typical anti-ECW comments which I understand is because of your WCW bias, and you hate that ECW was more loved. Anyways, Tatsu has really gotten over and I sure can't wait for the Hurricane to return! Who, by the way, came from WCW but needed a whole new gimmick to get over, yet Dreamer is the same he was and is still over. Hmm, interesting isn't it?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I really don't have a WCW bias because I worked there. I saw how poorly mismanaged the company was and I have been a vocal critic of Vince Russo and his booking in WCW. I have nothing against ECW either. The reason that Vince brought back ECW and nitr WCW is because he wasn't in a bitter wrestling war with ECW. ECW didn't kick his butt in the ratings for 83 straight weeks. Vince actually funded ECW back in the day so that he could use them as a glorified farm team for WWE to compete with WCW. I don't really think Dreamer is as over as you think he is. But we can agree to disagree.

Dustin already had a run in TNA. Did we forget about Black Reign already. If you did lucky you!

I agree with bob about birchall. I really like him. And no, I'm not British.

I made note of Striker's observation that Christian waited until the referee was in position before he tried to kick out, thus giving himself another breath or two. I hadn't considered that in twenty-three years of watching wrestling. I want more insightful analysis like that, but with WWE's "why is he out here?" philosophy of announcing, I won't get my hopes up.
