Youth is served on WWE Superstars
If you never watch WWE Superstars, you won’t miss anything in regard to the advancement of story lines. However, if you enjoy wrestling matches (often good ones) presented in a straight-forward format, WWE Superstars is must-see TV.
And if you watched Thursday night’s episode, you not only were treated to three quality matches, but you saw some of WWE’s brightest young talent on display. Five of the seven wrestlers who appeared on the program are under 30.
The show opened with Jack Swagger (26) defeating Evan Bourne (26). That was followed by Dolph Ziggler (28) beating Jimmy Wang Yang (28), and Kofi Kingston (27) retaining the U.S. title in a triple threat match against Matt Hardy (34) and MVP (35).
Here are a few observations:
I still believe that Swagger has the biggest upside among the twenty-somethings, but Kingston is perhaps more “over” than any of them, including breakout-star-in-waiting John Morrison (29). During the triple threat match, it sounded to me like the crowd was behind Kingston more than MVP. …
Bourne’s size works against him becoming a main-eventer, but, like Rey Mysterio, he could overcome it because of his dynamic wrestling style. What really is holding Bourne back from a bigger push is his inability to cut even a serviceable promo. …
It’s becoming more apparent with every appearance that Ziggler has “it.” …
I have been a fan of Yang’s wrestling skills since I first met him as a teenager nine years ago when he was in WCW as part of the Yung Dragons. It’s obvious that he is never going to have a real high spot on the card, but every company needs talented hands on the roster such as Yang who have the ability to make their opponents look good.

Just a quick question today,Kevin.
Why did they shorten the name of The Bash?Didn't it used to be called The Great American Bash?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, it was The Great American Bash. I have no idea why it was shortened.

if wwe bothered with some high flying fast paced stuff like wcw used to have they would actually have a place for yang wang. i dont know what vince seems to have against that kind of style, its great..

Am I the only one that thinks Ziggler is today's version of Bad Ass Billy Gunn back in his prime?

I hope they do give some of these younger talents more shine because the Triple H/Orton feud is absolutely brutal to watch.
Orton is a great heel, so I wonder, do they think none of the non-traditional main-eventers can hang with him and pull off a quality match?
Had The Miz eliminated Cena and Triple H I would probably have bought the PPV. But $40 to see the same main event match I've been watching for the past two years is not going to happen.

Kev, why is everyone so high on Swagger. I think he is a good ECW champ but i don't really see him as being successful once he inevitably gets moved over to SD or RAW. I honestly feel like Ziggler has the highest potential as his look screams wrestler to me
RESPONSE FROM KE: It's all subjective, but Swagger has the look, the in-ring talent and a natural heel presence.

Contrary to the Internet-pop belief that Vince McMahon hates all things WCW, I think the most logical explanation is probably the correct one: The Great American Bash was changed to simply "The Bash" in order to increase appeal to its world-wide audience.

I heard the reason they changed the name from the Great American Bash, to just the Bash was to appeal to a broader global fan base. To be honest, I was never really bothered by the American part of it. WWE and WCW are/were American companies, and rightfully proud of that. I can understand the mentality behind the name change with the growth into the global market, but I think they should change it back, and give some recognition to the home nation of the country and lets be honest, a majority of the wrestlers.

Agree with Kevin on Swannger. He definitely has the look and talent. He also mixes "real" wrestling in with WWE wrestling very nicely.

Am I the only one who looks at Swagger's attitude, size and ability and thinks of Curt Hennig? It's the first thing I think of when I see him.

I think WWE shortened the name to just "The Bash" because WWE has a global audience. That said, "The Bash" just doesn't feel like a ppv name.
Storylines? Storylines are a thing of the past. Instead, we get one-night/one-show angles that never seem to go anywhere. I miss the late 90s.

I think Jericho should get another understudy like what they were trying with Lance Cade. Ziggler or Swagger in my mind could pull this off and it will help push either guy into bigger profile type matches.

To answer your question and I read this on a wrestling site yesterday. Vince wants to get away from anything that has to do with WCW. He wants everything to be a WWE origin.

Wasn't Umaga fired? There was a promo for him last night.

WWE may have dropped the "Great American" part of the title for the purpose of international marketing.

I am just bored with HHH vs Orton. Why don't they just end it and put the belt back on Cena.
Who do you think is the next challenger for the title though?
Nice blog as always.Keep up the great work.

Kevin, I read your blog frequently, and I was wondering why you always have up to date posts about WWE but your posts on TNA and often times late. Half of the time you even admit to getting your info from the net. It would be wonderful if we could get more TNA content in a timely fashion. I actually believe TNA has surpassed WWE as of late because they actually change story lines, have better character development, the wrestling is better, and they don't have to be PG rated. Their tag teams are also far superior to those in WWE. It is almost like watching WCW in the mid to late 90s again. Thanks Kevin.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I think you're a little confused. I only get my info from the net on TNA PPVS. I watch every episode of Impact.

Gregory Asch- JR said in his blog that they shortened the name to just The Bash to make it more globally friendly.

RE: Gregory Asch
I read on obsessedwithwrestling.com that it was changed to The Bash because Vince thought "The Great American Bash" sounded too "WCW". I didn't really get that impression, but it's Vince's company, so whatever.

J.R said in his blog that the The great american Bash was changed to simply 'The Bash' for obvious marketing Reasons. And that's an explanation that sounds logical.
For people from foreign countries like me, the "great american" part of the name doesn't cause any impact or anything. Probably 'The Bash' is more catchy and worldwide marketable.

Dave,
I think that "The Great" Khali objected to seeing the PPV called "Great American", so WWE changed it to accommodate him since he's got that huge match against Dolph Ziggler.

Great blog here. I agree Bourne isn't the bet on the mic, but neither is Cody Rhodes and he's got a starring role on Raw.
I was surprised when Kofi got the US title..you can tell he's got appeal from the fans, but never expected him to be achieving titles like this..must be reward for hard work and staying out of trouble?
John Morrison has the potential to be the new age Shawn Michaels...
As for Swagger he's got the size of Brock Lesnar and if he can somehow overcome or work the lisp into his routine he's gonna be one of the great ones...

Billy Gunn had a prime?

I see that only one person has commented on the Umaga profile that WGN ran during Superstars. My wife, son and I were laughing out loud that no one thought to send them the memo!
