WWE releases Umaga
In another unexpected move, WWE has released Umaga, the company reported on its Web site. No further details are available at this time.
He is the second prominent wrestler to be let go by WWE in the past 10 days. Mr. Kennedy was released on May 29.
While never a bona fide main eventer in WWE, Umaga frequently faced the big stars and was considered to be among the best of the guys just below the upper tier.
Perhaps Umaga’s release explains why he just suffered back-to-back clean losses to CM Punk.

Kev - Like Kennedy , hasn't Umaga had issues with 'roids in the past ??

Wow, more shocking news! While I never cared much for his character, I thought Umaga was great in the ring for a bigger guy. Rare to see that kind of explosive speed from a 300+ pound wrestler.

I wonder if some more positive drug test have come back and the WWE is just releasing them now instead of publishing the results?? Umaga will make a good fit for TNA though if they hire him.

WWE has gone off the rails the last few weeks. Are we sure Vince isn't on TNA's payroll?

Apparently, they forgot to advertise that the Samoan Strap Match was a "Loser Leaves WWE" match.

maybe umaga will go to tna and join samoa joe's nation of violence

If Umaga goes to TNA, I would like to see him join with Abyss and maybe another wrestler or two to form a new age Dungeon of Doom with a manager as a mouthpiece for the entire group. They can set out to just beat the crap out of one or two guys at a time and carry on entertaining feuds without being involved in the title hunt.

It has to be a sudden thing otherwise they would have capitalised on it at the PPV.
A loser leaves town hardcore match certainly holds much more allure than a strap match.
Umaga is an excellent worker for his size and would be an excellent running mate for Samoa Joe in TNA.

Buh bye!!! I never liked Yumenga. This news pleases me.

Vince is practically pushing fans like me away. First Kennedy, now Umaga? Gee, I can't wait until next week to see the Miz and more Hornswaggle/Goldust BS.
Umaga is such an entertaining performer inside the ring. I have rarely watched a full 2 hour episode of Raw or Smackdown since my daughter was born 2 years ago, but whenever a select few wrestlers are on, and Umaga was one of them, I make a point to watch.
Vince, you are slowly losing a 25 year fan, and that's saying a lot, because I am such a huge wwe fan.
I'll put into perspective how unconnected I am with the current stale, oversaturated product.
I'm more excited for this Macho Man dvd coming out than I have been for any wwe pay per view that has been promoted for the past 12 months.

I have a history question... if WWE released Sim Snuka, then they would not have any Samoans under contract. Has that EVER happened before?!?!
The WWWF seemed to establish its reputation with its thick samoan bloodlines, and the WWF and WWE have maintained the tradition. But at this point, I think Sim Snuka is the only one under employment (and his employment isn't nearly as stable as Umaga).
But Umaga was hired before Rosey was released, and 3MW were hired when The Rock was still with WWE. Rikishi/Fatu) worked from 1993 - 2001 or so.
Was there a gap between Haku & The Barbarian leaving and Yokozuna & the HeadShrinkers starting? I remember HBK beating Jimmy Snuka early in his singles career, so maybe Snuka stayed from WM5 until the former-SST was hired.
I know Sika's employment overlapped the Islanders, so that would take their lineage from Haku back to the original Samoans.
It's amazing to think that WWE could be without a member of that family.

Mr. Sarcasm,
Jimmy Snuka is Fijian, and his son, Sim Snuka, is not only adopted, but is of American heritage.
You could stretch it and put them all in a group called 'Pacific Islanders', but neither Jimmy or Sim Snuka have anything to do with the Samoan wrestling families.
No disrespect, but lumping Jimmy Snuka (and his son) in with the Samoans is akin to me lumping Americans in with Canadians.

Umaga was awesome, what a loss! I really wanted to see him in the main event mix, I'm from New Zealand and it was great to see a pacific islander in there, what a loss for smackdown and for real "wrestling" fans

I'm starting to like TNA more every day! Umaga and Samoa Joe, with a shadowy Taz leading them? Put the belt on a slimy Kurt Angle, and watch him and the MEM (minus a soon-to-retire Sting) pull Four-Horseman-like shenanigans to keep the Samoan babyfaces at bay! I just hope they resist the lure of putting "IMPACT" on Friday nights!
Posted by: Ray Herrick | June 9, 2009 8:13 AM
So this means we will porbably never hear William Regal refer to him as "Umanga."

sorry to see the guy go hope he goes back to TNA even though the last time he was there they did nothing with him hopefully things will change this time.

Umaga's PPV match against John Cena a few years ago was a top notch main event. The big guy can move but maybe there are problems we don't know about. I'm sure we will see him in TNA

did anyone ever even relize umaga was formally known as "rosie" hurricane hemles masked partner????
whatever to the suger shane?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Umaga was actually known as Jamal, Rosey's tag team partner. Rosey, not Jamal (Umaga) was Helms' partner.

That's disgusting! Are you serious with me right now? WWE is hitting rock bottom before our very eyes. I've been trying to overlook it and look on the bright side but this is the last straw. I have never seen the WWE in a more pathetic, deplorable state than they are right now and I have been watching since January of 1996. I don't know about everyone else but I'm going to stop watching for awhile, give it a few months, check in again and see if they've improved and if not I'm just going to tune out completely. Between them firing a bunch of talent, superstars preparing to take time off, superstars constantly leaving on injury, repetitive feuding between main eventers, grown-ass men not being able to climb steel cages, and now this whole ordeal with Umaga, I'm getting sick to my stomach. It's just getting more and more stale by each passing month. Whatever the situation is behind the scenes whether wrestlers are abusing wellness policies, they can't get along, Vince McMahon is just a tyrant abusing his power, etc., the WWE is in trouble. I'm very disappointed in what the WWE has degenerated into--not only in relation to Umaga but that combined with everything else. Goodbye WWE!

Bet Cha' they release Shelton Benjamin next.

WOW! That suck's!!
I think if pushed properly he could have been a main event guy.He just needed to be able to evolve.
Could WWE's losses become TNA's gain. Dig this. I read somewhere that TNA gave try out matches to Elijiah Burke and Kenny Dykstra, and liked what they saw, at least from Burke. Get these two together with Kennedy and Umaga and you have disgruntled former WWE employees. They could claim that they had the life "up north" and now they've been reduced to to wrestling for a second rate promotion like TNA, in a crap-shack like the Impact Zone, and they're only here until they get they call from Vince to come back home where they belong. Ah! They would have so much heat with the TNA fans. They hate anything WWE.
I mean TNA has no problem A)Mentioning Vince and the WWE on their show and B) pushing guys from WWE ahead of there own talent, which sucks!, but that's the way it be.
Think of Kennedy has the "charismatic leader", Umaga as the "enforcer", Burke as the "worker who get's under your skin"..... OK I'm still trying to figure out how to compare Dykstra to Ole Anderson, but at very least he could be a Barry Windham type. I may be overestimating the kid but he kind of reminded me of RVD, with they way he effortlessly glided to the top rope.
Just a thought thanks for letting me dream.

What that sucks Umaga he was a good wrestler he was vicious Competitor and he never back down from no one

Maybe for different reasons, but this reminds me of the AWA back during the "territory days".

I dont know why people are distraught over this news.
Especially Kennedy. What has he contributed to the WWE lately? Nothing.
Umaga, hasnt contributed much either. Im guessing this has to do with positive steroids results anyway. And in this economy, why pay someone who is not carrying their weight in the company.
TO CHRIS: you cannot be a 25 year fan and say that you've barely watched wrestling the last two years... and then comment on which wrestlers are competent in the ring or on the mic. That's a total contradiction on your part. Im just saying.

Trying to play catch up. Sorry to see Eddie Fatu go. It's been written time and time again that guys who don't or aren't allowed to work the stick in the WWE in this era, don't stay. It's as simple as that.

Shawn (Gavin) Spears had a try out with TNA, not Kenny. If Spears really gets the heel heat people say he does, then you can probably compare him to Ole with greater ease. Good post Andre.
When you think about it, there have been many ex-WWE guys that TNA has ignored. TNA could effectively do a WWE/ECW Invasion angle now.
I agree with everyone that thinks Taz leading a team of Samoa Joe and Umaga (Samoa Jamal?) would be impressive. Either that or Paul E. Dangerously starts a new Samoan Swat Team.

this is what the wwe wrote this morning on wwe.com:
"it should be noted that Umaga's termination was due to his second violation of the WWE Wellness Program and his subsequent refusal to attend a rehabilitation facility."
I guess this solves the mystery (if there ever was one)

He can move but umaga bored da jabronies outta me yeah but now kennedy on the other hand was a guy who should have rose up the ranks to some kinda title position. GUTTED
