Triple H returns on Raw; WWE title situation unresolved

I don’t know what WWE’s plans were for the WWE title before newly crowned champion Batista suffered a torn biceps, but Plan B definitely has a “been there, done that” feel to it. As I – and I’m sure many others – expected, Triple H returned to Raw Monday night, and his on-again, off-again feud with Randy Orton is back on.

Since it was Orton who put Triple H out of action nearly two months ago, it makes sense that Triple H would come back seeking revenge, but I just have a hard time getting too excited about yet another chapter in the Triple H-Orton rivalry. It’s time for both men to move on to other opponents, although looking at the Raw roster, that might be easier said the done.

The stage was set for Triple H’s return in the opening segment, as Legacy attacked Batista and injured his arm (apparently it was the healthy one that they worked on). After Batista was taken out in an ambulance, Orton invoked his rematch clause and Raw general manager Vickie Guerrero ruled that Batista would forfeit the title if he was not in the ring before the referee’s 10 count.

When it came time for the match, Batista was a no-show. The referee got up to eight before a camera backstage showed an ambulance pulling into the arena. The referee then stopped counting. It turned out to be Triple H who came out of the ambulance instead of Batista.

From there, Triple H delivered a severe beat-down to Orton, punctuated with a Pedigree onto a chair. Since the referee never finished counting – which didn’t make any sense, by the way – I assume that Batista still is the champion.

The live crowd was into Triple H’s assault on Orton, but it would have meant a lot more if we hadn’t seen Orton beaten up by Shane McMahon and Ric Flair recently. At this point, smacking Orton around is no big accomplishment. For the life of me I cannot understand what the WWE creative team is doing with him. They took a breakout heel and have systematically castrated him.

As far as the WWE title situation, it will likely be resolved on the special three-hour edition of Raw next Monday. It has been announced that there will be WWE, world heavyweight and ECW title matches on the show.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

It appears that Vickie Guerrero has been written out of the show, as she announced that she was quitting as GM because of the humiliation she suffered from the Hog Pen match. According to pwinsider.com, Guerrero recently gave her notice so that she could spend more time with her daughters.

After Guerrero’s story line resignation, Edge came out (so much for sticking to the separate brand concept) and admitted that he only married her for her power, and then went on to degrade her about her physical appearance. Guerrero has so much heel heat that Edge almost came off as a babyface. To me, this segment seemed excessively mean-spirited to the point that I felt bad for Vickie Guerrero – not the character, but the real-life widow and mother.

If this is really the end of the line for her character, she definitely had a good run and was way better in the role than I ever thought she would be. As far as who the next GM will be, I wouldn’t be surprised if WWE went with an interim GM for a while and then give the spot to Flair when he returns from selling his head injury. …

Just wondering: Why is it that when Vickie cries there are never any tears? And how is it possible that she and Edge never consummated the marriage when they were together all that time? Edge must have had the longest headache in history. …

Batista must have a lot of heat with the boys since no one came out to make the save when Legacy was brutalizing him. On a side note, why was Jerry Lawler suddenly referring to Batista as “Dave?” …

There was a sign in the crowd that said: “Legacy is a joke.” Based on how the group has been booked, I can’t disagree, unfortunately. …

I figured the John Cena-Big Show program was over, but apparently not. Speaking of Cena, he finally interacted with The Miz, and it appears that the two are headed for a meeting on pay-per-view, which I never would have believed possible a few weeks ago. Since the split between Miz and John Morrison, Miz has actually received the bigger push. …

After MVP got a nice win over Matt Hardy, he talked about wanting to be involved in the WWE title match next week. If Batista is going to be out for a while, the time is now to finally pull the trigger on elevating MVP. As for Hardy, he has lost a lot of steam since the feud with his brother Jeff ended. I hope WWE hasn’t relegated him to midcard-for-life status. …

The tag match between the Colons and Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes was OK, but not as good as you’d think it would be. …

Nobody loves Mickie James more than me, but it was painful listening to her trying to do commentary during the Maryse-Kelly Kelly match.

Kevin,
Don't you think the dress Mickie was wearing made up for the commentary? :)

With Kennedy being fired and Batista being on the shelf, any word on an imminent HBK return? Hopefully not as part of a DX reunion again. 40something year old guys acting like that doesn't cut it anymore. I know, it still sells merchandies, though. :(

Did HHH steal that ambulance?

They should bring back Adamle as GM- he was appointment television.

Please end the stupid Cena/Big Show "feud". All of their matches have been unwatchable.

After watching Raw I was sad to hear that Vickie was leaving. She was the women we all love to hate. Enough with that. The beatdown that Legacy put on Batista reminded me of The Horseman back in the 80's when they would attack Dusty Rhodes. Looks like there might be a 3way at next ppv bet. Cena, Miz, and Big Show. Glad to see Triple H back on tv but like u said Kev his coming back was way too predictable.

"As for Hardy, he has lost a lot of steam since the feud with his brother Jeff ended. I hope WWE hasn’t relegated him to midcard-for-life status. …"

Probably just midcard-for-Raw status.

We got one Superman off the show only to have him replaced by another. Speaking of HHH, I am really, really tired of the sledgehammer. Give him a different weapon: some nunchuku ... or a toilet seat ... or a can of mace. The sledgehammer is played out.

WWE is still talking about Sherri Shepherd?

kev do you think since Raw is coming from Charlotte that maybe Flair will be anouncesd as the next raw GM. it looked like Dusty booked the opening segment i think i started yelling at the screen Arn,Tully.Ole please get off the Dream anyway it does semm crazy that noone helped out batista. What was Mickie wearing that outfit was horrible. Orton is starting to look weaker and weaker to me every week first he was scared to go down ringside to start the attack which took for ever with a scared look on his face then he had a look of fear on his face when he faced HHH the only thing I liked was his out of it look after he took the Pedigree to the chair. Why after Vickie quit would the World title rule be still in effect if Batista didn't show up then who would be their to strip the belt?

Last night was horrible...the whole thing took a dump with HHH coming back.

Before I found out that Batista was injured for real, I would have thought that all three men would get involved in a Triple Threat Match at The Bash for the WWE Title. Now that that's not happening, I think we are going to see Orton vs. HHH in a Hell in a Cell match at some point this summer to FINALLY end their feud. It's a match they've both been in, a match Triple H is known for, and it's typically the match to end all feuds, especially violent, heated feuds.

I have a problem with the feuds being booked for Raw right now. They are all recycled pretty much. Cena and Show has been done before. Inter-Evolution feuds have been done many times before. Matt Hardy vs. MVP has been done before. WWE did not do a good job with this year's draft. The top tier of Smackdown as a lot of veterans like Raw, but their feuds are fresh (with the exception of Jeff and Edge) and get the viewers' interest (which Jeff and Edge did anyway).

Wow. I was thinking the same thing last night about all the things you just wrote: Feeling bad for Vickie, wondering where her tears were, how could Edge and she not have had sex, Batista count-out and title change, and how boring it is to see HHH back fighting with Orton. The Legacy/Colon match was brutal to watch. I expected it to be a lot more entertaining.
If Flair comes back as GM then he provides another way to humilate Orton week after week. It has to stop. When is Orton going to get on a streak where he out-smarts and beats on people?
Between HHH, Cena, and Batista I cannot remember WWE having the faces win or come out on top all the time. If you're a heel you're going to get buried by one of these three guys.

I hope this attack on Batista and subsequent return of HHH does not pave the way for yet another title run for HHH, but I suspect otherwise. It would be cool if M.V.P. could somehow get the strap next week, even if its for a short run.

I would like to see a three way with Orton, HHH and M.V.P. next week for title.

There's no one for Orton or HHH to feud with- that's what they get for not giving a bigger push to guys like Matt Hardy, MVP, and TBK.

Tricky move by WWE, having one of the more annoying performers be anti-Cena makes being anti-Cena annoying.

Never consummated the marriage- weren't Edge and Vicki in bed in a hotel room that one time-maybe Edge was just teaching her how to "wrestle".

Once again HHH to the rescue.
Yawn.
The only thing missing was a big S on his chest and a cape.
Your right Orton has been totally declawed.
The best heel in the business-
totally declawed by inept writing.
How much of that I wonder is HHH doing.

I don't understand why the ref was all up in ted's face to provide the "distraction" that allowed cody to nail primo. To me it made no sense and was way too convenient. It's getting hard for me to suspend disbelief.

Yes, mickie was really bad on commentary.

I smell a possible Edge face turn and a feud with Punk.

must agree with paul in hawaii.....mickie james looked amazing

Kevin,
I agree that it was weird to leave title picture muddled, or maybe it was attempt to make HHH's return seem on the fly. I also felt bad for Vickie the woman, but I have to hope that she is in on it, and it's "cool". It's always easier to generate heel heat like the Miz, than to become a "likeable" face like they are attempting with Morrison. I like Flair, but I hope they go in a different direction as far as GM.

If they do it or not is still to be determined, but now is the time to push 3 or 4 guys build them up to see if they can headline 'Mania next year. The whole point of 'Mania (unless I am lossed on this) is to make that new 'shining' star. Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, John Cena and Batista, even though some of these stars were big before there 'Mania matches excelled them to mega-stars. The four guys in question to push and in order of who can become a star in time are as follows, MVP, CM Punk, John Morrison and The Miz (even though he isnt a great wrestler, like many nowadays, this guy could shine).

On Vickie Guerrero -
In the last few weeks, the woman was referred to as a pig, asked to laugh like a witch with a pig snort at the end, work a hog pen match, uncomfortably roll around in the slop with her nephew Chavo, and then be subjected to Edge's scathing promo last night. Was this all necessary? I will definately miss her character , which she played exceptionally well...ur thoughts?

rest of the show was alright , but with supercena and triple h , i guess it will alwayz be the "B" show ( atleast for me )

Great Column as always Kev,

cheers

A moment of the silence for the drapes that were sacrificed to become Mickie James' dress.

I'm sure Mickie felt ridiculous wearing that dress and it showed in her commentary. In fairness, she did correct Cole and Lawler about it being the Divas title and not the Womens' title.

Speaking of the Divas champ, I can't get Maryse's entrance music out of my head.

So much for my prediction that MVP would win the belt last night. But if he isn't WWE champ by the end of 2009 then something is seriously wrong in Stamford.

If Cena finally interacted with The Miz what was he doing with The Miz on the May 11th edition of RAW? Or do exhibition matches not fall outside the definition of interaction?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Interact was probably the wrong word since they have been in the ring a couple times. Maybe "acknowledge" is better. I could be wrong, but until last night, had Cena ever addressed Miz in a promo?

It must be tough for William Regal to hold a straight face talking about "class and dignity" while wrapped up in that blue-and-gold puffy dress.

I agree with Elevation: Enough already with John Cena/Big Show.

Long time WWE fan but only recently discovered this blog. I have to say what a great read it is too!

For all the twists on Raw this week, it looks like we're back to the same tired storylines. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Orton vs HHH/Batista feud has been going on for far too long now. I was also hoping for a fresh twist, and a continued reign from Orton. The numbers game is also becoming very tiresome. Either start a stable vs stable feud or bring to an end this Legacy "reign".

How about DiBiase and Rhodes turning on Orton? He's built their names up and maybe now is the time for them to break out and build some new storylines, given their rising credibility. I have to say how impressive DiBiase has looked in his one-on-one encounters. I remember him taking it to Batista a few months back and being pleasantly surprised how technically good he is, despite the predictable loss.

On a side note, my shout for Raw General Manager is Mr. Kennedy. Not gonna happen as he upset the apple cart with Vince's boy, but how entertaining would that be? Every time somebody questions his decisions, he can just shout "Kennedy!" in their face! Quality! :)

And as far as Mickie James is concerned: Wow!

Methinks Vickie Guerrero left through the same door that Mick Foley and Tazz exited.

People don't leave a good job! WWE should re-examine how they treat their non-wrestling personalities before they have to start from scratch.

There is no doubt in my mind after this show, that Smackdown is the No 1 show in Sports Entertainment now. Without question. Injuries cannot be helped, but repeated storylines and stale feuds are really getting to me.

1 thing though Kev...logically - seeing as Kofi Kingston cleanly beat MVP, shouldn't he be more deserving of a title shot? I know wrestling is far from logical......

Raw blows my mind...

Please no HHH & Orton fued...I can't stomach it. It should have been MVP's night. HHH would have made a great interm GM.

Speaking of stomach...Big Show and Cena?!? I can't believe I'm saying this but Cena/Miz is a lot better! Actually the crowd seemed to be into the match. I'm looking foward to it now. It has sorta grown on me.

Would someone please give Kofi a storyline.

The Vikki resignation segment seemed rushed, and Edge's part was not needed for her to quit. I turned away because it got uncomfortable half way through Edge's part.

If I see Orton get beat up on more time...

Something seems a little fishy in RAW land. Orton took the type of beating that would suggest that he's going to be taking a long break. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in some hot water, maybe a wellness policy violation? Vickie Guerrero was a heel so she did deserve to be on the wrong end of a joke at times but the WWE went way too far with some of the insults that were directed towards her. I'll miss seeing her character on TV, she was a magnet for heel heat

wow, im really bummed out about vickie leaving. she was really underrated i think, the other gms they have had recently havent been anywhere near as good as her. im looking forward to raw a little less now!
i am quite sick of having my intelligence insulted now, the way that the orton /hhh/ batista thing(and alot of cenas stuff) makes me feel like an idiot for watching it. this isnt good, my patience is wearing thin and i have pretty much lost all faith that they even know how to put together a good wrestling show anymore. the only reason i am still watching is santino/ miz, other new talents that are coming through, hopefully they do something right with these guys and cm punk/ morrison ect.

kev: im curious, do you still think that they have it in them to make a good show anymore?

Oh, I never go my "Excuse Me" t-shirt.

So long Vikki, I will miss you.

Please someone answer this...why is everyone hoping certain people get pushed who really dont get any crowd reaction? MVP does not get a great crown reaction. He does not deserve the title, now or anywhere in the near future. Batista comes back, there was no crowd pop at all, and he gets the title. Morrison, i am sorry, is boring. His promo's are horrible. He does not deserve to be champ. And BTW, why does everyone need to be champ to get over? Some of the greatest stars from the past never held ANY GOLD AT ALL...Jake Roberts, Jimmy Snuka, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Big Bossman, PIPER...these were all guys WAY OVER than most of the talent today, and they never had ANY gold whatsoever, and no one ever said anything about them being "held back"...they just did their thing, had great fueds that didnt need gold. Thats what made the belts (IC & World) mean so much. Not every guy in the world needed one to be "over". I hate wrestling the way it is..everyone and their mother has some sort of gold. That is BS in my book.

BTW, if I was booking, I would turn guys heel that arent getting over...Batista & Cena (Even though in reality if I was booking Batista would be fired cause I hate that guy)...but a heel Cena may have potential...MVP & Morrison would never have gold until they were really REALLY over, giving them gold so soon hurts them (look what it did for Carlito...anyone even remember he won rthe IC & US belts on his first nites in each brand??). Bring back the One champ and let him defend on both shows. Brock Lessnar defending the World Title on both Raw & Smackdown was real fun back in the day, and it ment something.

Ok, i better stop cause i can rant all day long!!!

* I don't see Miz as being an example of it being annoying to be anti-Cena. Mostly because everything he says about Cena is true (little kids and girls being his demo, his movies sucking and doing poorly). In fact, I have to give Cena credit (which is hard for me to do) for being okay with the angle as he is getting called out on real parts of his career. It is putting the business first and I have to respect that. Imagine Trips doing the same...
Also, I think the Miz is doing an awesome job with his opportunity.

*I just don't see anything in MVP that says he should be elevated. He is sluggish in-ring, his act is all catchphrases and lame pose-moves and he is atrocious as a heel. His gimmick would have been better suited for Shelton Benjamin who I feel could have pulled off a more reserved version of the arrogant, T.O.ish athlete. You know, the kind that is "all about the benjamins"? Come on...

*Triple H's return was boring and predictable. Why is anyone supposed to fear Orton and Legacy again? You can't build good heels if they get beaten up every week. If I hadn't already lost faith in the creative staff at WWE, this would do it. What a waste. The best and most naturally hateable true heel in a generation and it is all for nothing. If they put half the effort into making Orton the top heel that they did making Cena the top face, we could be looking at some great scenarios. Sucks.

*Mickie James can say whatever she wants. Whatever... ;)

JBL as the new GM???

Mike - - Piper did hold the IC Title before dropping it to Bret Hart.

Kevin - - Did you notice Lillian Garcia introduce US Champ Kofi Kingston as the Intercontinental Champion?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes I did.

Now that Edge is no longer World Champion I can end my boycott of Smackdown. But if HHH becomes WWE Champ, my boycott of Raw begins!

Could someone explain to me why the referee was even counting on Batista while Dibiase and Rhodes were standing in the ring waiting to jump him? That made as little sense as anything else that went on. It sucks right now for us because we can't get Smackdown, so it makes sense to us why everyone keeps crossing over from one show to another. WWE screwed up putting Smackdown on My Network.

It's really tough to find any good reason to watch Raw right now. The protracted promo Edge directed toward Vickie Guerrero demonstrated no redeeming qualities and this most recent return by Triple H to take on Orton rings hollow.

I don't think the people producing Raw have a clear idea what they want the show to be: reality TV, a bad soap opera, or warmed over struggles between tired protagonists. There isn't enough substance amongst this filler material and none of it is very compelling.

Last year Cena fight JBL from Judgment Day, to One Night Stand, and all the way to The Great American Bash with JBL winning the last bout. Looks like the same thing is happening between him and The Big Show this year. The only difference is The Big Show has actually defeated Cena before.

Legacy isn't booked powerful as Evolution was, so no wonder people calling them a joke.

HHH VS Orton program have to stop. Seriously. Batista getting involved in that mix doesn't leave a strong impression whatsoever. So as HHH returning last monday on RAW

By The Way Kevin, where do you think Christian will go from losing the ECW belt? I'd love to see him on SD

I don't get why Mickie didn't get a title match and Kelly Kelly did. I mean, Mickie has pinned Maryse several times while Kelly has lost to her several times, so why did Kelly get a title shot? I can understand if it was a regular match, but a title shot?

Oh, and usually I don't make comments about the main event scene but talk about dissapointing (sp?) to see Triple H back :(. I hope there's a hole dug for Legacy because Triple H is back, and he's going to officially bury them.

I actually want to see Matt Hardy in the title picture, I know they have him on the heel slide but he is one of the hardest working members of the WWE team. It would be interesting to see both Hardy's with the gold at the same time.
I admit I am a huge HHH mark but even I was not happy with the show on Monday the conclusion left more questions then answers, and as much as I love HHH without his shirt on, he can not be the answer to all of Raw's many problems.
As for GM, Bring back Steph, I am all for a new McMahon-Helmsley era.

Once again we are left with Triple HHH coming in to "Carry" the show due to Dave Batisita's overgrown muscle's shredding. I agree with you there is too much back peddling with this Orton-HHH angle. Let's move on.

Excuse Me.....I said Excuse me....
Always good for a cheap pop, I even enjoyed that. I was proud of the WWE in this instance taking Vicki and giving her an opportunity to be further involved with the sport her husband so dearly loved.

As far as the rest of the show it was mediocre at best. Is it just me or are there like 30 Divas on the WWE roster right now? Half of them can't wrestle, and Mickie James is giving commentary on a match that had no major signifigance at all. It shouldn't be long before Gail Kim is booked in those type of matches. Ohhh Wait she already is.

Keep up the good work Kevin.

Kev,

I'm glad to see that I'm not crazy! I was thinking the same exact thing you were as far as Triple H's return to TV; I guess one has to return to the well until it's demolished due to the lack of getting steam behind some of the up-and-coming talent. I'm not excited about HHH's return at all, and I really don't see how I'm expected to believe in this vicious, viper-like Randy Orton heel if he keeps getting beat up members of Evolution, esp. since that whole Legend Killer gimmick cemented the fact that Orton is adept at beating up people older than him.

Do you really think miz has been given a bigger push than morrison?

RESPONSE FROM KE: So far, yes. He's getting major mic tiime and interacting with Cena and Big Show. Morrison is in a midcard feud with shelton benjamin.

I agree others need to get pushed. I wish Mr Kennedy was still around, I would love to see him and Orton feuding. I could care less for Triple H and wish he would stay away from the screen for a much longer period. And the same, Batista seems to always be going under the knife. McMahon should cut ties with that walking injury.

I thought Monday was the night to pull the trigger on shaking things up. They could have basically made someone's career by giving them the chance to take out Batista. I was thinking it'd be a total waste if Orton or Legacy did it, but maybe less so if DiBiase was allowed to do it on his own in an attempt to prove himself. Then I thought the coup would be for HHH to do it after Batista let Flair get brutalized. To me, that was the only way to give HHH's character juice enough to be interesting at SummerSlam. Even his intro last night sucked. When Batista's music hit, I thought for sure they'd cut it out for The Game's, but the camera shot was awkward and less jarring/impactful to the audience. Followed by a cliche beatdown that made me hit erase on my DVR before it was even over.

The worst part is that there's no intrigue about the future on Raw. HHH will beat on Orton all summer and vice versa just like it's the spring. At some point Cena jumps in the mix with whoever has the strap and we rehash another program. Big Show will jump in and then jump out like it's the main event hokey pokey.

HBK will come back, but I don't really get pumped for him vs Orton. Kennedy was the freshest act they had to put up against him since MVP doesn't have the benefit of the affect returning from injury has on getting major face heat. Kennedy and Manu will probably both be taking Randy off their Christmas card list if there is any truth to him being behind either getting canned.

I can't believe the thought I just had in that The Miz is the ONLY character on Raw worth watching. Wow! I mean really though, he's the only guy on the show who's growing and the only one who's segments I can't predict. He's had great promos and his attack on Show was a surprise to me since it took balls and that's way more than your champ was showing. Kofi would be 2nd in terms of growth because he won the US Belt, but he's still a snoozer to watch. Meanwhile, MVP looks like he is going backwards for some reason. Hornswaggle has more wins than him lately.

It'll be interesting to see who the new GM will be. My list of those most likely reads exactly like my list of who would not add anything new to the show. Stephanie seems like the obvious choice to return with her husband, but it's been overdone already. I don't want Vince back. Shane would have been a good choice since he's never had the honors before, but the Orton feud just means he'd be involved in it. Flair did commissioner duties before and he'll be making bank overseas so I don't see him coming back and JBL probably isn't getting his calls returned lately. So who does that leave that's credible enought? I think there's a long list of HOFers that would be interesting. I've given up on Austin coming back on the road, but there are either of the Legacy fathers on the road already. My darkhorse is Santino(a) though.

Umaga and Kennedy are being booked better than Orton right now.

While I admit the verbal abuse that Vickie took was a bit much, "She-Beast" is now a part of my vocabulary.

I'm probably in the minority on this one but I thought Swagger and Christian were fine on ECW, at least till the next draft, but it may be time to pull the trigger on one, if not both of them and get them to RAW ASAP! Let HHH and Orton end there feud (quickly) and let's get some fresh match ups. Because I'm sorry MVP is not there (yet.) It's painful to watch him pander to the crowd when he's setting up for that ridiculous "Ballin' Elbow", only to have them appaluded politely. I don't think he ever recovered from that giant lossing streak last year, no one takes him seriously as a title contender (yet.)

What are the chances that The Hart Dynasy catches fire and Orton dumps DiBiase and Rhodes in favor of them. Orton could say "I need someone who his actually gonna be able to help me." And they could still keep with the whole Legacy being 2nd generation stichk.(except for Kidd.)

I think they should bring the Hart Foundation to raw and start a huge faction fude between the Harts and Legacy ! That would be SWEEEEET !!!

KEVIN

The Harts would laugh in the face of Legacy! And based on the current booking would beat them in the ring.

yea kev to me it was done horribly i hate hhh and there not doing anything with orton i guess
