The Bash preview

Predictions for tonight’s WWE pay-per-view:

WWE champion Randy Orton vs. Triple H in a Three Stages of Hell Match: In this two-out-of-three-falls contest, the first fall is a straight wrestling match; the second is falls count anywhere; and, if necessary, the third is a stretcher match. I’m predicting – and hoping for – an Orton victory. The title has changed hands too many times as of late and Orton is the guy who should be champion going forward. A 14th title reign for Triple H is the last thing the Raw brand needs right now. Whatever the outcome, this feud has overstayed its welcome and needs to end tonight. The problem is that because Raw’s talent roster is so thin at the top, there doesn’t appear to be any logical new opponents for these two.

World heavyweight champion CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy: For me, this is the most interesting match on the card. WWE really seems to be onto something with Punk as a tweener world champion, so it wouldn’t make any sense to take the belt off of him. I envision one of those scenarios in which Hardy seemingly has the match won, but the resourceful Punk finds a way to escape with his title. I wouldn’t be surprised if Edge and/or John Morrison somehow got involved in the match.

Intercontinental champion Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio: If Mysterio loses, he must unmask. Without the mask, Mysterio just isn’t Mysterio, and WWE will not make the same mistake that WCW did 10 years ago. Mysterio regains the title in a potential show-stealer.

John Cena vs. The Miz: The way the story line has unfolded on TV makes it seem as if The Miz is somehow going to steal a victory, but I just don’t see it happening. Miz makes it competitive, but Cena goes over clean with The Attitude Adjustment.

ECW champion Tommy Dreamer vs. Christian vs. Finlay vs. Mark Henry vs. Jack Swagger in a Scramble Match: The longer Dreamer holds the title, the more it is devalued. Henry was put over as the favorite on TV, which means he is probably the least likely to win. I’m going with Swagger.

The Great Khali vs. Dolph Ziggler in a no-countout, no-disqualification match: I would love to see Ziggler win, but I have a feeling that Khali is going over.

Unified WWE tag team champions Primo and Carlito vs. Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes: The time seems right to put the title on DiBiase and Rhodes. By the way, whatever happened to that story line with The Brian Kendrick looking for a tag-team partner to go up against the Colons?

WWE women’s champion Melina vs. Michelle McCool: I’m still having a hard time with this match being on the show instead of one between Maryse and Mickie James. I’m guessing that McCool wins the title.

Isn't Finlay in the ECW Championship Scramble?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Oops. Inadvertently left him off. It's fixed. Thanks.

I would LOVE to see Finlay win the scramble.

I hate the fact they dropped the Great American out of the name. Vince is such a baby sometimes, I'll bet its because its wcw related and he wants nothing to do with that. Thats just childish in my opinion. The Great American Bash has been a staple in wrestling as far as I can remember when Flair would wrestle like 40 times in 30 nights or something like that. Anyways I think this will be a sloid show. Orton better get over and The Miz just has to win some how by a fluke or something or this whole fued will just be a waste of time. CM punk should defiantly retain althogh I'm big Hardy fan but the bely needs to stay on someone for more than a month. Chris Jericho in my opinion is the best in the business right now. He can have a great match with anyone at this point but Mysterio must win. I do not wanna see him unmasked. Great column as always Kev... Although I wish you had a job on the WWE creative team..

You really think Ziggler will lose in a no DQ match when he can legally use weapons? I'm guessing he does an assault with chairs/etc. and gets a pin victory - it would launch Ziggler very quickly into higher caliber matches without being unreasonable, obviously he wouldn't beat Khali clean in a regular match.

"The longer Dreamer holds the title, the more it is devalued."
Does your WCW past write for you sometimes? Because I can really see how the only ECW wrestler on this brand holding the ECW title devalues it. Why must you make an anti-Dreamer remark in every column you write with him in it? Don't you get the sentiment there? He's my favorite, and I can admit he's far from the best wrestler out there, but he's got the fans behind him.

Anywho. I agree about the Michelle McCool vs Melina match. Mickie James vs Maryse deserves that spot more, and the build has been better with Maryse trying to avoid Mickie and everything. But maybe they'll have a match at the next PPV with more build.

What exactly is a "tweener"?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Not a heel or a babyface, but somewhere in beTWEEN

"By the way, whatever happened to that story line with The Brian Kendrick looking for a tag-team partner to go up against the Colons?"

Good question. That storyline was one of Raw's few specks of mild interest. WWE really needs to invest more time in the "A show's" undercard, a point which overlaps with your observation of there being no logical next opponents for HHH and Orton.

I'm really looking forward to this PPV, the way the last couple have gone down, it has the potential to be a good one. Here's hoping...

I still can't understand why a rematch for Edge vs. Morrison isn't at The Bash when they had a great match on smackdown few weeks ago and instead we have Kahli vs. Ziggler which has been dull since the first match they should have had the No DQ match on this week's smackdown and Edge who is a main event star isn't on the show my favourite WWE star last couple of years. Oh well hopefully he'll get involved in the world title match between Punk and Hardy.

While I get your point with the Trips and Orton match, I am too big of a Trips fan to ever wish him to lose a match... unless it is against HBK then because most of their matches were brilliant I didn't care who won or lost.

To be honest I am just hoping it is a good PPV and the match between Orton and Trips is great especially after the pretty good LMS match last week. (but it is ok I can live with the disappointment I will most probably feel at the end)

I'm really hoping Edge and MVP get involved in matches somehow; it's just weird that they don't have spots on this show (Edge especially).

If the WWE puts the title right back on triple H with him being back for only 2 weeks, it will show me they really don't get it. If they ever wants these titles to mean something again, they have to give someone a lengthy run: Orton makes the most sense to be that guy, as he really needs some time as the champion to undo all the damage the WWE booking has done to him of late.

I go for wins for The Miz and Dolph Ziggler.
I also see the Orton thing going forward, the same storyline, but with different faces coming in and out until it comes to a head later in the year with Orton being taken out by multiple superstars in some kind of epic show.
I think H takes this one, followed by an ambush on Raw.

Just wondering Kevin, if you thought that because of the TNA Victory Road/MEM + Joe storyline (in which it could be a MEM holding all the titles similar to Evolution) that WWE might avoid Legacy holding the title + the tag titles type of story line?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't think WWE cares one bit what TNA does with MEM.

im so sick of orton vs HHH let the feud die and Kev do u know where mike knox is?

I would rather have Edge vs Morrison than Khali vs Ziggler. Even Ziggler vs Morrison or something like that would be better.

I don't know why, but i am actually quite looking forward to the Cena Miz match.

Come on Orton.

not bad u only got 1 wrong and another 1 they threw a wild card in so u get a mullagan for that 1. i am kinda upset though with Edge/Jericho as champs would have really liked to see the harts win the belts because to me legacy is just a raw team and couldn't defend them on all the shows well I guess Jericho happy to be gone from raw will offically come to an end because i can see him and Edge doing alot of title Defenses their to boost the ratings

Not bad; 5 outta 7 and you get a pass for the Unified Tag Team Championship. (Hey, it's my comment. I'll give passes where I want.)

I read the results and I'm happy I didn't order the PPV, unless possibly the descriptions I read somehow failed to capture the spirit of the show. I'm looking forward to your recap as I tend to agree with your opinions more than I do with other sites.

Edge and Jericho winning the tag titles was the only shocker. It explains why Edge wasn't on the card before but I don't really understand how Teddy Long has the power to change a Raw match. I get that the tag titles are all brands but this still came out of nowhere storywise. They should've dropped a hint with the McMahon-Long segments that winning the tag titles for Smackdown would help Teddy keep his job. It wouldn't have taken long and then this addition would've made sense. Plus, then you could introduce a storyline where general managers want the tag titles as a sign of superiority, being the only belts all brands can win. Seems like a no-brainer for something like this to happen with tag belts, but that doesn't necessarily mean WWE will do it. As it stands, the tag belts' stipulation hasn't been used much since the draft. Oh well, Edge and Jericho are great and I can see them working well as suspicious but effective heel partners. Also, maybe the tag division will improve on the much better booked Smackdown!
